OPERATION MUGHALPrepared By: Cpt. Luke van Kovschek.
AREA(S) OF OPERATION Kabul, Afghanistan
BACKGROUND
With the majority of NATO troops pulled out of Afghanistan in early July, 2021, the Taliban launched a massive offensive against the Afghan government and made considerable gains. While a few holdouts remain besieged in cities throughout the country, the majority of Afghan security forces have been routed and have fallen back to mount a last ditch defence of Kabul. Afghan security forces currently hold approximately half of the city, but are surrounded by Taliban on all sides. Defeat is nearly inevitable at this point, however Afghan security forces are mounting an uncharacteristically fierce defensive.
Unfortunately, the hasty and ahead of schedule pullout left sensitive NATO intel in Afghanistan before it could be properly recovered or destroyed. With no national armed forces willing to send their SOF back to Afghanistan to recover this intel before it can fall into the hands of the Taliban or other bad actors, NATO has deployed Task Force Aegis to do so. Other regional powers such as Russia, China, India, Iran, and Pakistan have SOF operating in Afghanistan for similar purposes, and in the case of Russia, China and Pakistan to recover NATO intel. ROE on these forces will be elaborated on in the faction report below. If a site cannot be entered due to hostile fire, Aegis is authorized to scrub sites of intel via airstrike from Turkish or Afghan aircraft.

PRESENT FACTIONS
Friendly Forces (BLUFOR)
Afghan National Army - The remnants of the 201st Corps of the ANA have consolidated with other routed ANA units to defend Kabul. Alongside them, Afghan special forces in the form of the 1st Commando Brigade, National Mission Brigade, and Ktah Khas are assisting in the defence of Kabul. ANA has access to armoured fighting vehicles in the from of M1117 Armoured Security Vehicles, M113 APCs, and a very small number of T-62 MBTs. ANA combat personnel have been bolstered by officer cadets and personnel in non combat jobs being given rifles and sent to the front. ANA has a limited amount of air support in the from of A-29 Super Tucanos, AH-6 light attack helicopters, and Mi-24 gunships, although with Hamid Karzai International Airport being so close to the front they are extremely vulnerable to ground fire and CAS may not be available forever.
Afghan National Police - A large number of regular officers have defected to the Taliban. However, a not insignificant number have remained loyal to the NATO backed government and have organized themselves into fighting units. They are bolstered by the Crisis Response Unit (Commando Force 222), Afghan Special Narcotics Force (Commando Force 333), and Afghan National Civil Order Police.
National Directorate of Security - The national intelligence agency of Afghanistan which has a large number of special operations personnel under its command. NDS special forces are also participating in the defence of Kabul.
Popular Mobilization Units - Anti-Taliban Afghan civilians who have taken up arms. Many ex-military are among them, although some of the ex-military are old enough that they served in the communist Afghan army. However many are regular civilians with no formal military training. International fighters are amongst their ranks, mainly Afghan diaspora from Europe and a small number of NATO veterans.
Women's Protection Units - Inspired by the YPJ in Syria, groups of Afghan women have taken up arms. They are more willing to die than return to life under Taliban rule. Some are former security forces members, including former special operations personnel. However most members have a complete lack of military training. Taliban chatter suggests that they, along with female security forces personnel, are mounting some of the toughest resistance.
Turkish Armed Forces - When American troops pulled out, Turkish troops deployed to Afghanistan to secure Hamid Karzai International Airport. Ground troops have mostly pulled out save for squadron of Maroon Berets who are in the AO to provide targeting for Turkish F-16s and Bayraktar TB2 drones operating in support of Afghan troops. They have already scrubbed the Turkish embassy of intel via JDAM strike. Aegis may be able to request air support from Turkish aircraft if necessary.
Indian Army - India has deployed a company of Para SF to assist the ANA, acting on intel that Pakistani special forces are working with the Taliban. They will also attempt to scrub the Indian embassy of intel before Pakistani forces can reach the Indian embassy. Alongside Para SF, India has deployed a smaller number of Garud Commandos from the Air Force to function as combat controllers for what remains of the Afghan Air Force.
Hostile Forces (OPFOR)
Taliban - Have made rapid gains in recent months and are on the verge of regaining control over Afghanistan, with only whatever resistance government forces in Kabul can muster standing in their way. Their equipment has been bolstered with captured US equipment and they are able to operate light armour in the form of the M1117 Armoured Security Vehicle as captured from Afghan forces. Been on alert for the Red Unit, elite Taliban fighters which may include Afghan special forces defectors, and are equipped with night vision, thermal weapon sights, and sound suppressors.
Pakistan Armed Forces - Are known to be assisting Taliban. All Pakistani Armed Forces personnel in Afghanistan are from the Special Service Group, so expect a high level of training and equipment on par with that of our own. Aegis is weapons free on Pakistan Armed Forces personnel.
Inter-Services Intelligence - The Pakistani intelligence service. Personnel are on the ground and are likely to be on the hunt for NATO intel to give to China, as well as any intel from Indian facilities. Weapons free on ISI personnel.
People's Liberation Army Special Operations Forces - China has deployed approximately a company sized force of operators from the Oriental Sword Special Warfare Group of the Beijing Military Region to Afghanistan to search for both NATO and Russian intel, and assist Afghan forces in the hopes they may become a Chinese client state in the future. Afghans decided they trust the Chinese even less than the Americans or the Soviets and Afghan security forces began firing on Chinese SOF, forcing them to pull out of their former ops center at the Chinese embassy. PLA SOF are now hostile to all other armed groups in the area (including Pakistani forces despite Pakistan being a Chinese ally) and are continuing to conduct their mission to search for NATO and Russian intel. Terminate with extreme prejudice.
Independent Forces (INDFOR)
Liwa Fatemiyoun - A militia of Afghan Shiites recruited by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards to fight in Syria, they've returned to their homeland to prevent a Taliban takeover. They're actively cooperating with Afghan troops but we have no intel as to how they may react to NATO forces. Only fire upon in self defence.
Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps - The IRGC has deployed two companies of Saberin commandos to Kabul. These are battle hardened troops from operations in Iraq and Syria and have access to modern equipment. They have been ordered to defend the Iranian embassy and assist Afghan security forces. There is a possibility they may try to search for NATO intel but we're unsure if they've yet made any attempts to do so. They are only to be fired on in self defence or if caught snooping around our objective areas.
Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) - The SVR has deployed the Spetsnaz unit Zaslon to Kabul for much the same reason Aegis is deploying. Zaslon has equivalent equipment to NATO special operations forces. We are not to fire on Russian forces if they do not fire upon us. Exception will be made if Russians are caught snooping in any of our objective areas. ROE subject to change. Russians and Afghan security forces are operating on friendly terms at the moment.
Special Operations Forces of the Russian Federation (SSO) - Approximately 150 SSO operators have been sent to assist Zaslon in their tasks, and like Zaslon has equivalent equipment to NATO special operations forces. Same ROE applies for all Russian forces.
