I love that Agy's transcript idea is taking off like wildfire.

Thanks for applying, Rodez and Sylvanstreak. I like both concepts. I also have been running around since 6AM, so I'll review both apps in detail once I'm home tomorrow (Monday) evening. I'm sorry about the delay.

CHARACTER APPLICATION

(Image)
PLAYER NAME/NICKNAME: Rodez

CHARACTER NAME: Javier "Oruga" Eliseo Luque Salazar

CHARACTER SPECIES: Vampire (Metahuman?)

LINK TO CHARACTER IMAGE OR DESCRIBE: Somehow Javier still thinks of himself as a conquistador, though some people would laugh to see him. Standing at 5'7," about average height for a 16th-century European male, he does not even make up this deficiency in musculature. He is not frail or thin, but his frame is decidedly unremarkable, his tone no more distinct than a 21st-century hit-the-gym-once-a-week male. At least he has a strong jawline and a playful, impish smile. Sanguine and chocolate eyes peer out bemusedly at whatever subject Javier happens to be observing, but they turn flinty when angry - especially when the Spaniard is struck with a bout of Tourette's, with which he has been struggling for centuries. His face is creased all over from the equal weight of grief and joy he has experienced over the years. Javier wears his dark hair long and loose, almost to shoulder length. His nose is uncannily hawk-like, and a little crooked from having been broken more times than it has healed. Finally, his fashion is right out of a mid-2000s action thriller: RayBans, leather jacket over wifebeater top: dust-covered jeans and dirty, once-white New Balances.

(Image)
CHARACTER CONCEPT: A vampiric Spaniard afflicted by an Aztec curse, which he is still in the process of figuring out. He's a frighteningly good pilot and a terrifyingly unpredictable social x-factor: his Tourette's makes sure of that.

CHARACTER PERSONALITY: Though on first impression some may imagine that Javier is duplicitous and conniving, the honest truth is that he is only a little duplicitous and conniving, and really holds genuine good will towards most people, albeit under a layer or three of ironic nihilism and impishness. Under normal circumstances he would be something of a social butterfly, but Tourette's throws a wrench into his otherwise impressive and well-developed social graces. One never knows if he is going to successfully charm someone or cuss them out for being a Calvinist dog. Although he possesses the disease in moderate form, certain relief from it can only be found in the world of dreams, where, Javier has found, he can be the very best version of himself.

CHARACTER GOALS: -Javier desires more than anything else to forge a new life and a new identity for himself with the Agency. Now that he's been plucked out of his former life and time, he really just wants to start over - maybe on Slate, his vampirism won't define who he is.

-Living a little more freely. Being a blood-sucking bastard for the last five hundred years can really take its toll on one's psyche. Javier has often suppressed and subordinated his instincts and desires to whatever occupation he holds at the moment. Hopefully, in his new position, he can be free to act more like himself, with all of the horrific consequences that may imply.

-He's also a bit of a momma's boy, and wants to find his mother. Fidelia Salazar was a witch of some renown in 16th-century Asturias (NW Spain), and somehow Javier can still feel her life force, somewhere out there among the cosmos. He will occasionally receive broken and fragmented dream communiques from her.

CHARACTER WEAKNESS/VULNERABILITY: -Vampirism. Javier has all of the typical advantages and disadvantages associated with being a vampire. This means he has a dislike of intense sunlight, and enormous vulnerability to silver weapons and holy water.

-Dream death. Being a vampire basically precludes the possibility of conventional death, but his power as a dreamstrider comes with one hefty drawback: Javier can really be killed, finally and completely, when moving through the dreams of others.

CHARACTER BACKSTORY:
[RECORD OF JAVIER LUQUE'S APPLICATION TO THE AGENCY... TRANSCRIPT START]

[REDACTED]: Alright then, Javier, let's get started.

[JL]: You are aware of my condition?

[REDACTED][MULTIPLE VOICES][SHUFFLING PAPERS] - What? Oh, erm, yes, yes I have it right here. Tourette's, doctor's note. That's alright then, Javier. Can you tell us a little about yourself, where you came from?

[JL]: I was born in the village of Carracedo, Spain, not far from Santiago de Compostela, you know, the big Catholic pilgrimage site. It was 1489 or 1490, I can't remember which. Father was a soldier, born a commoner but had made something of himself. He pretty much made sure from day one that I was going to be a soldier too. A hard man, maybe too hard to love anyone.

[REDACTED]: I understand your mother has a special place in your heart.

[JL]: Of course she does, you fucking Calvinist dog! Sorry, there I go again. You see?

[REDACTED, LAUGHING NERVOUSLY]: Well, that's alright then. Please go on. Please.

[JL]: Yes, my mother was a wonderful woman. She was a witch you know - she was very good at hiding it. 16th-century Spain is not the sort of place you want to flaunt that. I've wondered if her gift has something to do with my gift. Can't help but feel that way, though I may never know for sure.

[REDACTED]: Yes, erm, what do you refer to it as? 'Dreamstriding?' Could you shed some light on how this came to be?

[JL]: Like I said, my father ensured that I was raised to be a soldier. As a young man, Spain's wars in the Iberian peninsula were winding down, so the best hope of making one's name and fortune was overseas. Accordingly, I signed on to join Hernan Cortes' expedition to Mexico. The campaign was being planned and coordinated from Cuba, so we were gathered there first. We landed on the Gulf Coast in April 1519, founded what is now Veracruz, and proceeded inland. I will never forget that.

[REDACTED]: So you - you personally knew Hernan Cortes?

[JL]: Yes. We were friends, after a fashion. He called me La Oruga - means, 'The Caterpillar.'

[REDACTED][MULTIPLE VOICES, MURMURING]: Why did he call you that?

[JL]: The hell if I know. Go ask his corpse. This was well over five hundred years ago.

[JL, CONT'd]: So we took Tenochtitlan, which you now know as Mexico City. We were bloodthirsty conquerors, totally triumphant. The best days of our lives. Not long after the conquest I was charged with exploring an abandoned temple. Cortes thought there was gold inside. I went in with a small party of men and soon got lost amidst the twisting and turning passageways. I . . . touched something. A totem of some sort. And I . . I changed.

[REDACTED]: This is where the Dreamstride first affected you?

[JL]: No, that was somewhat later. And it took decades for me to master it. What found me in that moment underneath the temple was something much darker. It inhabited me, and I . . . I killed the men I was with. My own brothers-in-arms.

[REDACTED]: You must be referring to your vampirism.

[JL]: Yes.

[REDACTED]: You'll be happy to know that you're not the first of your kind to work for the Agency, and that we have a safe and sustainable way to keep you supplied with blood.

[JL]: You son of a Turkish whore. You devilish catamite. Thank you. I appreciate the thought.

[REDACTED] . . .

[JL]: Look, it's just something you're going to have to get used too. I have a feeling you've handled worse.

[REDACTED][SOUND OF SCRIBBLING NOTES]: That's certainly true. So that's how you came to be, then. What have you been up to in the intervening centuries? And as a brief aside, there are several dimensions where the Spanish conquest of Mexico never occurred. I've even heard of one where the Aztecs accomplish the reverse, in Europe.

[JL][PERHAPS TRYING TO JOKE]: Means no Taco Bell then, huh? Ahaha. Well anyways, I kept a lower profile after my affliction with vampirism. I've participated in many of the formative events of Mexican history, including the War of Independence, the war against the Americans, against the French, the Revolution of 1911 . . . I've been around. Most of the time I made my living as a soldier of fortune, bodyguard, or criminal goon, but I've held some less unsavory positions as well. Did you know that I ran a Taqueria in Nuevo Leon from the 40s all the way to 1972? That was fun. I also moonlighted for a time as one of Castro's guerrillas. Not that I'm much of a Communist - it was just that I got bored with the domestic life.

[REDACTED]: And how was it that you got, well, here?

[JL]: Starting in the 1980s, the smuggling of marijuana, cocaine, and later heroin, across the border into the United States became big business. I decided that I wanted a slice of that. I became involved with the Sinaloa cartel and worked my way up the corporate ladder, if you know what I mean. Absolutely no different from climbing the chain in a white-collar office, except in this case you are having your rivals killed. Well, I climbed pretty high after awhile. Too high. In 2007, somebody ratted me out the federales, who came calling on my place in the Sierra Nevada. I went out in a hail of bullets, which is really the only proper way to go. Now I'm here.

[REDACTED]: I see; that's quite fascinating. Thank you, Mr. Luque. You may return to your room. We'll see about processing your application as promptly as possible. If you need anything, just ask.

[JL]: Thank you. Fuck your mother. Thank you for the opportunity. Heretical fucking pig. I'm very excited.

[TRANSCRIPT END]
(Image)
ONE BEST SKILL: -Dreamstriding. This is Javier's magical power, derived from his long-ago Aztec curse. Dreamstriding implies the ability to enter and exit the dreams of sleeping individuals at will, whether for communication purposes or to reconnoiter something in particular about that person, whether it be their hopes, fears, motivations, or immediate plans. The military and intelligence applications of this power are obvious. Javier's dreamstriding usually functions with a short operational range, but once he establishes a strong connection with someone, he can communicate through dreams over longer distances, potentially many hundreds of miles. The length spent in dream-world and the distance involved will certainly take its toll on Javier, however. For one, it will cause his Tourette's to flare up, sometimes drastically. For another, real, final death is always a possibility in Dreamworld, from which there is no coming back. Even the vampiric Spaniard has no defense against this.

TWO GOOD SKILLS: -Piloting. From the early 20th-century onward, Javier's great and unquenchable passion became flying. He has been in the cockpit of every flying machine imaginable, from 1920s biplanes to jetliners and jet fighters to various kinds of helicopters. He wouldn't be very familiar with spaceflight though, given his life and times his relatively recent recruitment.

-Combat arms. Javier was originally a soldier by trade. Although the centuries have seen him hold myriad different occupations, he has always made it his business to keep up to date on the armaments of the day. As a result, he is familiar with a wide range of modern firearms, though he's always preferred a good carbine and his trusty Colt .45. And anachronistic as it may be, he still has his old Italian rapier, and is pretty good with it, too.

THREE FAIR SKILLS: -Tracking. Javier has always dabbled with hunting, and through sheer practice has developed something of a keen eye for small game, big game - and people.

-Dancing. Yeah, he's pretty good. He's had a couple of centuries to practice the tango, after all. Caught up on modern dance and music up to about 2008. Big Wham! guy. Bring him to an event.

-Sociability. This one is actually kind of hit or miss. Under normal circumstances, Javier is pretty good at making friends and talking to people. However, his success depends on the intensity of his Tourette's at the given moment. Taking him to a party is truly rolling the die.

FOUR AVERAGE SKILLS: -Cooking
-Hand-to-hand combat
-Swimming
-Very basic medical skills

MISC INFORMATION: -Javier is a vampire, and will of course need to consume blood from time to time in order to remain healthy.

(Image)
IMPORTANT POSSESSIONS, FIREARMS, ETC:
Misc.
-Regular outfit: Leather jacket, wifebeater, regular jeans and Ray-Bans.
-party outfit: one of several bright Hawaiian shirts tucked into khakis, with or without denim jacket.
-half-empty bottle of Cenote Reposado tequila
-Several books, including Meditations by Marcus Aurelius (which he has tellingly never opened) and One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, which has been read so much it is now falling apart.
-Three full blood packs
-some coffee
-several packs of Camel cigarettes

Weaponry
-AKM assault rifle and ammo
-Colt .45 'Magdalena' with silver inlay + ammo. Pilfered from a cartel rival.
-16th-century Italian rapier in pristine condition.

SLATE APP. DO NOT REMOVE THIS LINE!

Fantastic character, Rodez! He's approved.

We're hosting a Halloween gathering here (for pre-teens-oh-god-kill-me-or-drug-me), so the IC might not launch until Saturday evening. I'll add him to the roster now.

CHARACTER APPLICATION

(Image)
PLAYER NAME/NICKNAME Sylvanstreak

CHARACTER NAME The Barber

CHARACTER SPECIES Cyberdyne Systems, Series 1027

LINK TO CHARACTER IMAGE OR DESCRIBE In its default form, the Barber resembles a stocky, round faced Korean male, of late middle age, with close cropped hair and a salt and pepper goatee.

(Image)
CHARACTER CONCEPT An aide, colleague, cone of silence, and sidekick to Summerveil, a private detective.

CHARACTER PERSONALITY Given its partner's tendencies and proclivities, despite its nature by construction, it's oriented itself more toward being a turntable for Summerveil the (.)45 to play on. Not to say that she's a dilettante...more like an eccentric.

CHARACTER GOALS Render all assistance possible to the Agency, including finally opening that barbershop without prospective customers running away screaming and putting it at the Agency’s disposal as a discreet meeting point. In the meantime, discover the fate of its coworker and partner, Summerveil, in the two-being PI firm she runs. Find out how to create blended scents that won't drastically offend humanoid and other sapient olfactory sensibilities.

CHARACTER WEAKNESS/VULNERABILITY Extreme vulnerability to very high or low temperatures, energy based weaponry, and explosives, as well as very high volume and/or velocity ballistic weaponry.

CHARACTER BACKSTORY
REDACTED. Tell me about yourself.

THE BARBER. I am a Cyberdyne Systems Series 1027 robotic entity.

REDACTED. What’re your origins? How did you come by the name The Barber?

THE BARBER. I was first activated on the 31st of August, 2036, and intended to be temporally displaced to the 31st of August, 1947. The temporal displacement equipment malfunctioned, resulting in an incomplete jump to an uncertain time and place. On arrival, I was deactivated and later reactivated by Summerveil. As I was later told, and in the same conversation she decided to call me a barber because she thought I needed one for this ugly goatee.

(CONVERSATION ABOUT SUMMERVEIL OMITTED.)

THE BARBER. Correct.

REDACTED. How did you come to partner with her? What other capabilities do you have?

THE BARBER. Due to the incomplete jump, my initial mission no longer applied as its objectives could not be accomplished. Summerveil reprogrammed me to assist in her work, acting as a semi-autonomous utility tool. And also a hairstylist.

THE BARBER’S ARMS MORPH AND EXTEND SOUNDLESSLY INTO POLISHED BLADES, ONE WITH SERRATED EDGES. THEY VIBRATE FOR A FEW SECONDS BEFORE DEFORMING BACK INTO ARMS AND HANDS.

REDACTED. (COUGHING. SOME NOISES OF PAPERS SHUFFLING.)...And so you followed her here?

THE BARBER. (COCKS HEAD SLIGHTLY.) My mission is to serve as an assistant and tool for private investigators, first among them Summerveil, and in the event of her disappearance or incapacitation, other PIs.

(Image)
ONE BEST SKILL Robotic physiology (the Barber is composed of mimetic polyalloy nanoparticles capable of extensive self healing, reshaping, and reformation, and movement through confined spaces).

TWO GOOD SKILLS Calculations and data storage (via onboard programming and detailed accumulated files). Being a cone of silence/white noise generator (via vibrations of nanoparticles to cancel out sound waves and also detailed accumulated files).

THREE FAIR SKILLS Imitation and impersonation (although limited by knowledge of impersonated subject’s life and times). Report editing (via accumulated files on how to eliminate unnecessary information). Providing haircuts (via accumulated files).

FOUR AVERAGE SKILLS Separating parts of itself for different functions (typically only used for tracking someone, and limited by situation. If combat is expected, hard-coded directives do not allow the Barber to do so, to make it easier to keep track of separated trackers vs pieces blown away by battle damage). Strength above that of a human, although limited by the Barber’s size. Hand-to-hand combat, mainly focused on the use of edged weapons formed from its own body rather than any formal martial arts styles or systems. General firearms use, but limited to “point business end at targets and pull/hold down trigger until targets are down”; no skill at maintenance or specialization in use of any particular class of projectile weaponry.

MISC INFORMATION Despite lacking a sense of smell, the Barber prioritizes seeking out and acquiring all manner of pleasant scents, when not having an Agency assignment. Fresh bread, perfumes, colognes, new rainfall, and so on.

(Image)
IMPORTANT POSSESSIONS, FIREARMS, ETC A large cardboard box in which to shut down and/or restart.

SLATE APP. DO NOT REMOVE THIS LINE!

First time filling an application of this type. I think I got everything, please let me know if I missed a spot.

He'll fit in perfectly, Sylvanstreak!

My only question is his goal to find Summerveil. Do you foresee bringing her on board later (once I open it up to multiple characters? Otherwise, she wouldn't be in the immediate game setting. He's have to go on some sort of quest to find her, or else make inquiring about her become part of his shtick.

Will add him to the roster shortly. See notes above about IC start.

Welcome on board, both of you! We do have a RP ground server on Discord. I can add both of you so you can see the Slate channel. I'm advising everyone to use this OOC for game communication, however. An active OOC is an actively advertising game.

edit: both characters added; updated info in the app section to better explain why and how characters are part of the game blah blah blah. Got to pick up kid.

Perfectly OK. I don't see that I would have more than one character at a time, but I'll take your insights into account.

Looks good, Swith. Thank you for altering it to suit PL needs. You have my blessing of course, and my best wishes.

ALL, I won't know my employment situation until after the first of the year. I have one week a month in the States. That doesn't offer much time for RP. Overseas, too much stress with very little time to spare. Would like to bring my thade character in come January. Swith has permission to use Klaus if he's needed. Otherwise I'll remain a fly on the wall.

Miss the PL Fam. Miss chatting in Discord. I'll try to access it with my mobile. Catch up on all your news. No promises tho.

My first night back home hence only a brief post here. I'm stealing your OP for the rest of the evening.
I wear teal, blue & pink for Swith
There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man’s fears, and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination.

And he managed to delay the launch by getting us all up at the crack of dawn to do "autumn stuff" as a family.

Alright, peeps, let's get those apps finished so we can get this rollout rolling.

I'm waiting on two, but the players have had a full weekend of stress, so I don't mind one extra day. I think we can start if one, Mon, gets hers done. I'll bring Bones' character in later if need be.

Apologies for the delays, though!

"Nah, you seen this broad? Massive tits, and she was all over me!"

Gordon sipped from his mug quietly. The place usually had a nice rotation on Fridays, with a few light beers and IPAs to round out the mix. Today was all IPAs, though, and he sipped slowly. Too strong for his taste; if anything he would've preferred a premixed cocktail from a bottle.

Needed to keep up appearances, though. Wouldn't do to have a regular drinking the piss you could buy at the liquor store next to the Vons.

"Her face was ugly as shit, though. Need a paper bag to fuck her, know what I mean?"

He liked people-watching at the Dirty Dove. The new faces were interesting enough - mostly business-minded folks passing through on their way to LA or TJ for major conferences. If he was lucky he could catch a few words about the next big supply contract rolling through the West Coast. Mostly terrestrial, though, nothing bound for Mars. Anyone with that big a purse wouldn't be caught dead drinking here.

A few defense contractors stuck around with the other regulars - an eclectic mix of poor locals who never got to skip town and stoners looking to catch a looker at the beach or find a good cove and hit the waves. They weren't as interesting. Made good company, though, when he chose to sit at bar.

For his part, Gordon tended to keep to himself in his usual booth, tucked way back in the corner where the lights barely worked.

There was always someone, though. He chalked it up to his punctuality: every Friday, 6 o'clock sharp, a light beer from the rotation if they had it and bartender's choice if not. He was almost as permanent as the shitty light shades that half-lit the bar, or the crummy stools with stuffing leaking out the bottoms.

Today it was a miserable little fucker: pressed shirt crumpled from a long day at work in an office where the AC had conked out hours ago, half-shaven because this was a business trip but it was going badly so he'd given up on trying, and of course a faded wedding ring he never bothered to keep polished because he hated his wife.

"So what's your deal, eh? You see any hot bitches around here?"

Gordon took a puff from his vape. The bartender stared him down for a moment before shaking her head, "Gordon, you know the rules."

"Just one," he replied, taking another drag for good measure before turning to the new guy. Gordon eyed him up for a second, "You like pie?"

"Yeah, I like getting in some hot pie."

"Nah, nah, I mean, you know, your mom ever bake?" Gordon took another sip. Everyone he knew was some kind of pie person - apple, blueberry, cherry crumble. Sometimes they liked meat pies - shepherd, cottage, chicken.

"Huh?" the man looked taken aback. He rubbed his chin for a moment before replying, "I mean, I guess... She had a good Brown Betty. You ever had that? Apple pie without the crust?"

"Yeah, yeah. Used to make it in college," Gordon smiled, then took another sip, "Nah, I don't date. Too busy with work, you know?"

"Shame, some good ass on the beach. You should go down to Black's some time. There's ugly wrinkly old fucks out there, but occasionally you get some young titties. Real nice."

"Nah. Like I said, too busy."

"Right, well, anyways," the man moved to get up, "Say, you know a good taco joint out here? I heard San Diego's got the best Mexican food."

"City Tacos is alright. Try Tacos El Gordo if you're going south," Gordon shrugged, "Or if you're going north, El Patron off the 15's alright. Not cheap when it isn't Tuesday, though."

"Yeah I'm going south, I'll give Gordo a try. Got a big conference down in TJ tomorrow," the man downed what was left of his Manhattan and stretched, turning to the door, "Say, you know how long it takes to get past the border?"

"Depends. Who you with?"

"Amazon-Square, why?"

Gordon chuckled. Amazon-Square had already lost the bid to Proctor-Nagel two weeks ago. Just hadn't gone public yet, so all the usual song-and-dance was still going on.

"Take you a couple of hours at customs," he smiled, "Say, if you're ever in town again, you give me a call. I know a place that's got some pretty good Brown Betty."

The man sniffed, his eyes squinting as he struggled to recall the scent that had been slowly taking over the room for some time now. Gordon flipped a business card out of a small, shiny tin, offering it to him expectantly.

"Yeah, yeah, I'll hit you up sometime," the man squinted at the card before shoving it in his coat pocket, "Gordon, was it? Nice meeting ya."

"Mhm. You take care now," Gordon gestured at the bartender, "You got anything left for a Manhattan? This shit's piss."
First as tragedy, then as farce

CHARACTER CONCEPT: Resident of the Building, gun-nut, and apprenticing smith.

CHARACTER PERSONALITY: Slightly ditzy and reserved, but can be open at times. Likes to take things easy.

CHARACTER GOALS: To continue learning gunsmithing and running her own shop.

CHARACTER WEAKNESS/VULNERABILITY: Forgetful and sometimes naive.

CHARACTER BACKSTORY: Brit has been involved in this sort of thing, by proxy or directly, for the better part of her young adult life by this point. Between Bielefeld and Galli, she has been a semi-permanent resident of the Building since her arrival. For better or for worse, she has still seen herself stick with it all. She's seen people come and go and her fair share of sorrows, even lately with her own self. She missed the old adventures before things got so gloomy, and even other residents had stopped coming to the Building. Little did she know, a new initiative was being formed and working out the kinks. Even still, she went about her daily business to try and forget and even got a hold of some old technical manuals from the armory that had been mostly cleaned out as equipment was moved. She studied them out of boredom and interest since there was no real way to contact anyone outside the world. It wasn't until Minerva made a pitstop back at the Building while Brit was having dinner alone for the umpteenth time that she was informed about what was going on and whisked away to Slate. Well, some things never changed.

CHARACTER APPLICATION

Image
PLAYER NAME/NICKNAME: Talchyon (Some people call me Talc)

CHARACTER NAME: "Doc Sawbones" aka Dr. Jesse Turnbull

CHARACTER SPECIES: Enhanced Human

LINK TO CHARACTER IMAGE OR DESCRIBE: This, only with a robotic right eye

Image
CHARACTER CONCEPT: A gruff, cynical, stubborn country-type doctor from a former surburbianite type planet, who was run off planet due to a false accusation of malpractice. He comes with a robotic eye that helps scan for medical issues, and also has issues involving chain of command.

CHARACTER PERSONALITY: Cynical. Stubborn. Rough around the edges. Kind of grumpy, but will throw a zinger or two out every now and then. Sees his patchwork as his babies, and absolutely hates it when he fixes someone up only to have it ruined in a battle merely hours later.

CHARACTER GOALS: Care for the sick and fix up the wounded, despite limited funding. Figure a way out of this hellhole without getting killed, scammed, maimed and at the same time, not feeling like he's abandoned everyone who genuinely is counting on him. These are contradicting goals, which means Jesse is a little torn inside and not knowing which way he should go - duty or self-preservation.

CHARACTER WEAKNESS/VULNERABILITY: Stubborn, feisty, and pessimistic. Ignores rank if there's a medical need. Treats all patients equally - which is a weakness when he's showing preference to a wounded enemy over a less wounded governor's son. Has an awful bedside manner, for what that's worth.

CHARACTER BACKSTORY: Dr. Jesse Turnbull never intended to come to Slate. It's that simple. If you would have asked him five years ago what his chances would be of being a doctor on a mining colony in the outer fringes, he would have told you, absolutely zero percent, minus a few points for good measure.

How fate has a way of changing one's path.

A long-time resident physician on the lush, suburbanite planet Ganymede-4, Turnbull had everything going for him, if you don't count his gruff demeanor that never seemed to win style points with patients. Nevertheless, Turnbull or "Doc Sawbones" as he was colorfully nicknamed, had a busy practice treating all numbers of modern, common illnesses. Until the fateful day, when Turnbull was falsely accused of malpractice. A patient was given an experimental surgery and died. Turnbull was the administrative physician who permitted it, and even though the surgery itself wasn't 100% effective on average, it was their best bet. The patient receiving this experimental surgery, however, was the wife of one of the local business moguls who had made billions of credits in property. Long story short, the lady died, Turnbull was made the scapegoat and was subsequently run off the planet.

Bouncing around ships and star ports for a few years afterwards, Jesse found that the business mogul's vengeance was long-burning. Former opportunities closed up. Former associates no longer wanted to deal with him. It was as if his prospects of practicing medicine again lived under the darkest of far-reaching clouds. He tried for awhile to hire his skills out on passing ships here and there, only to find suspicion, low pay and short tenures. People hated his gruff bedside manner, and Jesse found himself having to defend his choices more and more, once the news got out that he had been unsuccessful in helping a very prominent former patient back to health. And the news always got out.

Fortunately, a recruiter at a far-off starport saw Jesse's plight for what it was, and came bearing a simple card. "Gesellschaft," it read, and the recruiter spoke of better prospects for a man of his skills treating miners harmed by radiation poisoning and people harmed by the dangerous wildlife out there. Good benefits. Good pay. No questions asked about prior history. Always room for a doctor.

From what Jesse has learned so far about his new position and duties, accepting this might have been the biggest mistake of his life.

Image
ONE BEST SKILL: Medical analysis - In part due to his robotic right eye that can perform bunches of scans, and in part due to a very accurate medical intuition, Jesse Turnbull is able to guess correctly what the medical situation of any patient is. This has also helped him as he has had to perform emergency care on dying aliens and other assorted beings.

TWO GOOD SKILLS:
- Surgery. On humans as well as others.
- Robotics troubleshooting. While not exactly "repairing," this is still very helpful if Jesse's eye malfunctions, or if he operates on someone with bionic implants.

THREE FAIR SKILLS:
- Bargaining / Bartering / Getting a better deal
- Blaster firing.
- Salvaging. Sometimes, Jesse can find a piece of equipment tossed out and make something out of it, or sell it for something.

FOUR AVERAGE SKILLS:
- Common Sense - Jesse can usually tell when a choice of action is a bad one to do. While not always "common," depending on who you hang around with, it has helped Jesse at times in the past.
- Driving
- Computer use
- Speaking in another common language of this area. Jesse can pick out words and phrases, and can respond and make himself known, but is by no means fluent.

MISC INFORMATION: None. Will get more as the IC develops.

Image
IMPORTANT POSSESSIONS, FIREARMS, ETC: Jesse has a blaster rifle. It's a weapon that can shoot a concentrated energy burst up to roughly 50 ft. with full damage, and further with less damage. Energy packs can be recharged and hold up to 12 shots.

-He also carries with him a field first aid kit when going out, containing the basics but is not nearly as well stocked as his clinic back at base.

- Other assorted things you might expect for a doctor with a robotic eye to have. Such as, various parts that can repair said eye if it gets damaged, some kind of communication device that would be the equivalent of a modern phone, wallet, ID, etc.

CHARACTER APPLICATION

Image
PLAYER NAME/NICKNAME: Gio

CHARACTER NAME: Darlene "Dar" Elsegood

CHARACTER SPECIES: Human (Slight Meta Enhancements)

LINK TO CHARACTER IMAGE OR DESCRIBE: 5'6", 112 lbs., Female. Pinkish-vanilla skin, naturally dark brown, wavy, medium-length hair (often dyed with purple and green), grey eyes with amber tinge. Usually dresses in the classic punk style with hand-me-down jackets, patches, and boots.

Image
CHARACTER CONCEPT: A survivalist-turned-delivery-girl-turned-Hope-Scout.

CHARACTER PERSONALITY:

  • Pragmatic
Dar isn't one to act tough for the sake of acting tough, but she does try to keep her sight on what's important and not get caught up in sentimentalism. She's not cold, cruel, or judgmental, but she can become awkward when it comes to "touchy-feely" type emotions. She tries to stay cordial with others, and isn't always sure how to respond to unconditional kindness.
  • Wary
Being raised by a doomsday prepper, Dar was brought up with the impression that people are fundamentally opportunistic and dangerous, just waiting for society to fall apart so they can all snap into an every-man-for-himself mentality. While she now understands that this generally isn't true, at least in it's most extreme sense, she's seen enough in her time as a delivery girl that there's still a lot to fear from many people, and as a result tends to be concerned and suspicious towards others.
  • Empathy
Despite her aversion to sentimentalism, Dar is a fundamentally good person who doesn't like to see others suffer, though this isn't something she is completely aware of. This often conflicts with her ingrained suspicion of others, causing her to have mixed feelings about other people in general unless she's completely certain that they're harmless.
  • Generous
Because she trusts in her ability to take care of herself even in hard times, Dar isn't shy about sharing what she has with others. She'll share food, medicine, and clothes quite readily, and is willing to do favors for others without any payback (aside from common sense etiquette about not taking advantage of her). This is also partially her way of trying to reject her mother's "fuck you got mine" prepper philosophy.

CHARACTER GOALS:

  • To find people in hopeless situations and safely (and consensually) deliver them to her employer.
  • To at least help others in bad but none unmanageable situations.
  • To learn to see the world through a lens of hope instead of fear and resignation, build a new permanent home and learn to see people for what they are.

CHARACTER WEAKNESS/VULNERABILITY:

  • Culturally naive
Dar's interests tend to be either basic or old-fashioned, because she wasn't exposed to a lot of culture outside of what her mother remembered and shared. As a result, she doesn't know much about famous art, literature, history, music, or trends — no Beethoven, no Beatles, no Brittney Spears. No Shakespeare or Stephenie Meyer. She's only really familiar with the punk scene, but once again, only as a result of that being what her mom was once part of, and doesn't recognize this as anything much more than simply "what people do."
  • Suspicion
As mentioned before, Dar tends to be suspicious of others to a somewhat irrational degree. This manifests in less of an accusative/glaring way, and more in a constant second-guessing-and-thinking-of-ways-out way.
  • Trouble with closeness
Because of her suspicion and lack of proper maternal love growing up, Dar isn't quite sure what it means to be friends or family with someone. She's okay with politeness, but becomes awkward and uncertain when genuine care is extended towards her. She tends to put up a wall because she's not sure how else to process it.

CHARACTER BACKSTORY:

Before she was born, Darlene's mother was part of a punk and stoner scene which served as a bridge into conspiracy theorizing and doomsday prepping. Ms. Elsegood became convinced at a young age that the world was always seconds from devolving into chaos and that she would have no one but herself to rely upon, and that she could not take any chances when it came to surviving. She had a boyfriend (Dar's father) but she kicked him to the curb early in her pregnancy due to being convinced he would be a dead weight on her and her baby. She made herself a nice bunker in a mountainous forest on Earth and homeschooled her daughter there, teaching her in the ways of doomsday survival and waiting for the end of the world. While they periodically went outside for supplies, Dar's mom always took them out armed and filled her child up with warnings that even if the people around them seemed nice, they were prone to becoming cold-blooded at the slightest sign of danger, and to not trust them. Once shit hit the fan, it would be the two of them against the world!

However like most kids, Dar eventually started to get sick of her parent's beliefs and way of life during adolescence, and became skeptical of her mother's claims of impending doomsday (considering she could never describe what said doomsday would even look like or when it was coming.) At age 19, she decided to leave home and make her way in the world to see if it was really as bad as her mom said. Her mother let her go under the belief that seeing the world for what it is would scare Dar into coming back and staying with her for good.

Not having many formal job skills, Dar struggled a bit when she came to the city, but eventually found good and simple work as a delivery girl. It was so easy, all she had to do was drive her moped to one location, pick up boxes, not see what was inside, and then leave them in other places and take the money there. Having been raised all her life to view the dangers of other people as overt, Dar was naive about the more subtle dangers, and did not realize at the time that she was delivering drugs and other black market goods. She didn't realize anything was wrong until one day, while waiting for a package outside a building, a crying and bruised girl came running out and begged Dar to drive her away. Alarmed by the girl's appearance and believing this to be the sign that doomsday was upon them, Dar drove the two of them away as fast as she could back to her mother's bunker, with a few sketchy folks on their heels.

But when Dar brought the girl to the bunker, her mother would not let them in: Dar was welcome, but it was supposed to be just the two of them, the girl was not welcome. She would use up their resources, and attract trouble. Dar refused to leave the girl however, and lead the two of them out into the wilderness where she could take care of them both until she figured something out. They made camp by a lake known for its freshness and purity, where the girl told Dar all about her terrible life and how she saw no point in going on. Dar deeply wished that there was something she could do to help the girl more, somewhere she could take her, and found herself dwelling on an intense desire for a place where they could all be safe — away from evil drug lords and from the dangers of a world on the verge of anarchy. She was one of the rare few to have her prayers answered.

The two young women found themselves transported to an idyllic property, where they met a woman that Dar refers to as Ms. Samantha Zale. Ms. Zale offered the hopeless a girl a chance to be safe, rest, and heal, which she accepted, and praised Dar for her selflessness, taking the young survivor in and teaching her about the Agency and how wide the universe really was. She asked Dar if she would be willing to help more people like the girl to this safe place in exchange for being able to live here anytime herself, which Dar accepted, seeing no reason not to. Thus is her mission in the Agency and on Slate: find innocent people in need of help, help them, and if they have nowhere else to turn to, offer them a path to the sanctuary. Her official title is "Hope Scout," currently the only one of her kind.

She's not sure how long it will last, but Dar has found purpose in fighting for new beginnings instead of waiting for the end.

Image
ONE BEST SKILL:
  • Survivalism
Dar knows how to survive in desperate situations, including living in the wilderness, disaster response, and general pandemonium. She knows how to find and build shelter, find and purify water, knows what sorts of plants to eat, use to heal, and avoid, how to build fires, how to perform first aid, how to hunt, etc. She has experience practicing most of these in the wilderness around her mother's bunker. She's a bit of a jack of all trades but master of none, though.

TWO GOOD SKILLS:
  • Motorbike driving
Is experienced with motorized bikes of various kinds, including mopeds, motorcycles, and dirt bikes.
  • Teleportation
The method by which she brings people to the sanctuary. She can only go to the sanctuary and back, and only bring someone with if she is touching them and they consent to go with her.

THREE FAIR SKILLS:

  • Cooking
Just because she can find scraps to eat in the wild doesn't mean that's all she wants to eat.
  • Basic self-defense
Dar is not a warrior by any means, but she can fight well enough for herself and others.
  • Navigation
She tends not to struggle with maps and has a good sense of direction.

FOUR AVERAGE SKILLS:
  • Bird calls
  • Clothes mending
She can restore, mend, patch together, and generally find a lot of good new use out of old clothes.
  • Knowledge of the history of disaster
She knows enough about past crises to analyze what to do in similar situations to them, but not much about the context behind why they happened, when, or where.
  • Compassion
Dar knows enough about people to know how to try to get people to trust her so that she can assist them.

MISC INFORMATION:
  • Knows a bit about her local punk rock history.
  • Due to primarily being around women most of her life, she's a little uncomfortable around men. Not a misandrist, just not sure yet how to handle them as opposed to girls and women.

Image
IMPORTANT POSSESSIONS, FIREARMS, ETC:
  • Hammerspace backback
  • First Aid kit
  • Crank-powered flashlight
  • Swiss Army Knife
  • Fire striker
  • Space blanket
  • Duct tape
  • Extra warm clothes
  • Travel-sized pan, bowl, and cup
  • Canteen

I am also trying to finish up another app, just so you know, OP.

Awake in Prefeton - A superhero story about school students discovering they have powers. Was more on character then on fights, but now there is the fight for the future and for freedom. Now in the final chapter.

Gio and Talc, looks good. I'll add them shortly.

Talc, my only concern is "Area Knowledge". It's a new setting for everyone, so it's likely that the only info people would have is the system the planet is in, the name of the planet, whoever serves as governor, etc. It's purposefully vague.

K. Cause I gave my character a modest ability to communicate in one of the other ones.

BTW, I changed his other skill to be Common Sense. I thought it fits him. I also changed the brief bio summary at the beginning. (and I am getting close to being done with a second app too. That one will be fun.)

App #2

Image
CHARACTER APPLICATION

Image
PLAYER NAME/NICKNAME: Talchyon ("Talc")

CHARACTER NAME: Seamus. No last name. Just, Seamus.

CHARACTER SPECIES: Leprechaun

LINK TO CHARACTER IMAGE OR DESCRIBE: Seamus in his dreams, since most of his gold was left behind. Seamus also is the height of a Little Person, and not the size of a flower or plant. He comes up to most people at their waist.

Image
CHARACTER CONCEPT: A smart-aleck, hyperactive leprechaun with no gold to give, and more than a few tricks up his sleeve. Hates structure.

CHARACTER PERSONALITY: Smart-aleck, trickster, presses the occasional envelope and crosses the occasional line.

CHARACTER GOALS: Find a way back home. Have fun in the meantime (sometimes in the form of practical jokes).

CHARACTER WEAKNESS/VULNERABILITY:
Stranger in a Strange Land - This is not Seamus' home dimension, and there are lots of things that he doesn't know. Things like banks, restaurants, guns, spaceships, table manners...

Hyper - Seamus is very fidgety and can't sit still for any lengthy amount of time. Force him to sit and quietly spy on someone, and he'll bounce off the walls in less than ten minutes at full volume due to all the pent-up energy. Likewise, Seamus doesn't do well with a tightly structured day. He is a lot more random, and it bothers him a lot to have to follow routines.

Broke - With only one gold coin to his name (and one he won't be trading), Seamus has no money. And if he did have money, he would be very poor at managing it.

Greed - Seamus would love getting money, though. The kind that is shiny, and not just electronic credits which he doesn't understand. To get such money, Seamus might do impulsive things...

CHARACTER BACKSTORY: Seamus is a leprechaun from a different dimension where mythical creatures abound. While he doesn't remember much of his early years, Seamus does remember learning and growing in the tricks of the trade of being a leprechaun. Tricks such as teleportation, wish granting, rapid fighting and using luck.

To the uninitiated, a leprechaun's luck seems to be a constant, sporadic happenstance of good fortune. But in reality, what is known as luck is an energy that has to be harnessed. Leprechauns are by nature more in tune to this energy, and have an innate ability they can learn to develop into greater prowess, that harnesses this energy and turns it into a good event that happens. Seamus learned these skills as the generations before him had also done.

Seamus found his way to Slate in an unusual way. Despite his tricks and awareness, Seamus was captured by a human in his dimensional home and was expected to grant three wishes. However, Seamus being the trickster he was, pulled several pranks on the human and couldn't contain his laughter at the many times the man fell for them. Like when the man sat down at a spot where the chair had accidentally been pulled back. Or ate the spicy peppers by mistake. For the 12th time! And each time that Seamus roared at the humor of it, the man grew angry. Until he wished that Seamus would go and never come back!

The wish took him to the Gesellschaft agency. Seamus was both startled at the new place, and frustrated that he wasn't able to find a way back. Unfortunately for him, being in this dimension had diminished several of his previously innate abilities. Seamus is now unable to generate gold, which is a problem because all his gold was left behind in his home dimension. Seamus was also unable to camouflage himself. He is unable to grant wishes. The good thing is, Seamus still has a few things going for him. Along with his high energy level, an outstanding agility and an ability to leap well beyond what a being his short size would normally allow, Seamus also still can teleport (however, because of the dimensional lack of mana, it's not far - only ten feet at a time. He also cannot displace people or things, scatter their atoms, or other such OP nonsense). He can still harness the energy called "luck", though at a much diminished level than in his home dimension. While he cannot do this for any lengthy amount of time, and can only do this sporadically, he can use that energy for a few minutes a few times each day. And last but not least - he has his favorite shillelagh with him. It may be a little thing. But every little thing helps in this lower-mana dimension.

Because he was bored and he didn't exactly understand what it meant to join the Agency, Seamus signed up to come to Slate and has since been greatly disappointed.

ONE BEST SKILL: - Teleportation - Seamus can instantly teleport from one place to another... within ten feet of his current position. He cannot teleport into people or things, and if he were to teleport accidentally into a place where someone or something else occupied, he would end up simply beside the other person (or thing). However, with Seamus' abilities, he can and often does make multiple quick teleportation jumps (which makes him quite pesky in hand to hand combat).

TWO GOOD SKILLS:
-Rapid-fire fisticuffs! With this kind of attack, Seamus can deliver many punches a minute - about a hundred and fifty. But they are not unblockable hits and an opponent could fight back or run like a coward. Granted, while this seems like an excellent offensive power, consider the source and realize that Seamus doesn't have great strength. Nonetheless, this attack can take opponents by surprise and may eventually wear them down.

- Enhanced Agility and Leaping. Seamus can be hit by attacks... but almost never by melee ones. Missiles, bullets and ray guns are a different matter. Likewise, Seamus can leap three times his height (about ten feet), which you might not expect from someone Little Person sized.

THREE FAIR SKILLS:
- Luck Energy Harnessing. Due to being in this dimension where mana is much lower, Seamus can only harness the energy that gets mistaken for "luck" only sometimes. When he is able to, it lasts for roughly 5 minutes. During this time, attacks that would hit often miss. Those that do hit tend to glance off. Outside of combat, anything good that would happen to a random member of the party will happen to Seamus. Things will work out better, or will surprisingly work out when failure was sure to happen without. However, this skill cannot happen much, and usually only once or twice a day.

- Awareness. Seamus is in tune with his surroundings and has a quick mind at processing what he observes.

- Lie detection. While not perfect at it, Seamus can sometimes tell when someone is fibbing.

FOUR AVERAGE SKILLS:

- Climbing. This leprechaun is a scrappy little climber. Rock surfaces, trees, buildings, he is decent at finding a way up.

- Shillelagh usage. Seamus has some proficiency in fighting with a traditional shillelagh, cudgel, or short walking staff.

- Hiding. While he can't camouflage himself here like he could back in his home dimension, Seamus does know something about hiding himself to blend in with his surroundings.

- Shoemaking. Kind of a lost art among his own kind, Seamus did learn how to be a cobbler in the old ways. Not that he ever wants to have to resort to making shoes...

MISC INFORMATION: (More to come in IC)

Image
IMPORTANT POSSESSIONS, FIREARMS, ETC:
Seamus has one gold coin on a leather band he keeps under his shirt. This is his "lucky" gold coin, though it has nothing to do with his Luck Energy Harnessing ability.

One shillelagh, leprechaun sized.

Other than that, just the clothes on his back and the derby on his head.

Current RPs -
Icarus - A sci-fi story about people from all different timelines and backgrounds, rescued right after they had died, and now on missions to find out what happened, why, and to stop renegade time travelers from destroying the past.

Awake in Prefeton - A superhero story about school students discovering they have powers. Was more on character then on fights, but now there is the fight for the future and for freedom. Now in the final chapter.

CHARACTER APPLICATION

(Image)
PLAYER NAME/NICKNAME: Talchyon ("Talc")

CHARACTER NAME: Seamus. No last name. Just, Seamus.

CHARACTER SPECIES: Leprechaun

LINK TO CHARACTER IMAGE OR DESCRIBE: Seamus in his dreams, since most of his gold was left behind. Seamus also is the height of a Little Person, and not the size of a flower or plant. He comes up to most people at their waist.

(Image)
CHARACTER CONCEPT: A smart-aleck leprechaun with no gold to give, and more than a few tricks up his sleeve.

The good thing is, Seamus still has his rapid fisticuffs that tends to both startle and bring some modest harm to those he might ever scrap with. Along with his high energy level, an outstanding agility and an ability to leap well beyond what a being his short size would normally allow, Seamus also still can teleport (however, because of the dimensional lack of mana, it's not far - only ten feet at a time. While he cannot do this for any lengthy amount of time, and can only do this sporadically, he can use that energy for a few minutes a few times each day. And hey. Every little thing helps in this lower-mana dimension.

For this one, I'd recommend using either teleportation or rapid fire attack. Having both make him a bit OP. Or, take the rapid fire down to a supernatural level that doesn't play out as an anime obliteration (non-defensible attack)

ARGHGHGHGHGFFFFUUURG. I forgot NS times out after a while. Will recode player roster shortly. At least the first IC post is ready to go.

Sigh. I was hoping it would go through, especially since Seamus was more of a weakling and any rapid hits he might give would be less than what an average teenager could.

But it's changed. Teleporting it is. (If you change your mind in the future on the rapid fisticuffs, I'll gladly take that back with limits).

I'm fine with both, but less rapid hits per minute. :p He can wail, because hey, we had an Irish Chicken once, but make it less strokes in a volley.

As a gauge, a boxer named Pavol completed 253 direct strokes into a punching bag in 31.84 seconds. He tired after that. So double that into a minute, giving a leprechaun 500. And as our resident boxer pointed out, that's not a bad skill. It works because the target has nowhere to retreat (rings are a bitch). To make it a fairer skill, his opponent should have the ability or option to step back or run like a coward, if available.
