Government Type: Absolute Monarchy
Brief Explanation of Government: The King Commands and we Obey. Sighs Fine I'll explain more.
As of now, there's multiple levels of Government. In the Imperial Government, there's a notable change in infrastructure of how things are being run. At the top level is the Imperial Government, setting about setting laws upon the land. These laws have supremacy over any local province, and what they might think. This Imperial Government is responsible for the Military, cross provincial matters, and trade policy. Though remember, this is an absolute Monarchy. OVER THE HILLS AND FAR AWAY BLARES.Then there's provincial Governments, the local governments that arose when former Princes States were broken up into smaller Provinces. These Provinces are ruled by Govenors, appointees of the King, and are responsible for local Govenorship, and complying with Imperial Edicts. Provincial positions are increasingly of two sorts, the meritocratic sort, and the salaried sort. No position of power is guarnteed, as long as the Emperor was happy, you could probably keep your job. This goes from the Govenor, to local courts. These Goverments are also consequently monitored by the Imperial Secret Police. The most basic level is the village, run by the chief, under the jurisdiction of the Govenor.
Ideology: Reformist Absolute Monarchy

Army:
Number:45,000
Composition:
>30,000 Infantrymen
>10,000 Archers
>5,000 Calvary
Morale: Above Average, due to previous years success. Would shatter probally if facing a western or European army in the army's current circumstances, but would probably last longer than most Natives.
Training: Decent. All things considered, it's a organized army as any other. Not up to European Standards, nor is it so in logestics, however it's training would trample on any domestic opponent.
Experience: High. Due to previous years of campaigning, the current Imperial Army is a seasoned, and loyal force. Though this experience should be taken into the context of it's opponents. Experience would mean little facing volley fire from rifled guns.
Description:
The average Infantrymen is armed with a circular shield, a sword, and a spear. Some units are armed with Javelins, which are thrown before swords are drawn, and the enemy is engaged. Bowemen also make up parts of the army, pelting enemy troops before it's time to engage the enemy. These soldiers tend to be armed with bows, quivers, and swords of their own. Finally there's calvalry, given the delight of riding native Ethiopian horses, these horses are shorter in nature, but just right for transversing Ethiopia's terrain. These men are armed with sword and Lance, making for appropriate flanking action, charging down enemy troops, scouting, etc.
Navy: None to speak of.

Other Info
Brief Description of your Economy: A predominantly agricultural Economy, many people are currently substance farmers. It has a cash crop sector, notably coffee, that while in comparison to others is small, doesn't mean it doesn't have potential if Ethiopia doesn't play it's cards right, not to mention other possible avenues……..
Goals:
My goals are to reform the Military, establish a new constitution, diversify the Economy, and modernize it's prospects, while gradually bringing in Investment from the powers that'd be so inclined, while educating Ethiopians abroad so we can launch our own progress.
History:
The Era of the Prince's is over. Ethiopia had been unified just in name, in reality ruled by various Lords across the country. Begining his rise in the 1840's, Tewodros began a campaign to unify the country. Defeating local Lord after local Lord, he began the process of making local Govenors and officials salaried positions, positions achieved at a meritocratic basis, and positions that served at his pleasure.

In 1855 he was officially crowned Ethiopia. After his coronation, he set about making himself a grand Empire. His campaigns swept south, crushing local tribes and nobles, forcing them to recognize his "divine" right as ruler, and using the Aksumite Empire of old as a basis for his ambitions, a restoration to glory for the Ethiopian people's. It was just that those peoples needed to be reminded of what greatness they were capable of- if pointed in the right direction.

By 1863, the nation's current conquests had ceased. In no due part to the entity known as the Min Confederation, and after examining them, they could tell two things: They were not African, and they were not to be trifled with. So, the Emperor set about reforming Ethiopia. The first part being the provincial level. The Emperor had began touring Ethiopia, setting up new, smaller, Provinces, with Governors appointed by him, to rule. This was accompanied with the understanding that a Governorship existed on the pleasure of the Emperor.

This was also followed by the separation of Civilian and Military authorities, and the setting up of spy networks to monitor local Govenors and Governments. The Spy Network also worked to remove undesirable elements that might threaten the new Empire and it's reforms. This was accompanied by the establishment of Institutions like the Post Office, which would help internal communication. This was also increased by making land taxable, using the land of vanquished nobles and distributing it to the people, directly cutting at their Power, and making the Church taxable. He made it up to the Church by allowing its role in education more Paramount as a "reward."

One final big part was the Army, which was a force fiercely loyal to the Emperor. It was ethnically Homogeneous, Ideology driven, paid and fed by the Emperor, and loyal to the State. As it turns out, the Emperor is the State. As things stand now, the Emperor is making plans for a coffee expedition to Europe. He needs to increase his profit margins, and as such, will seek to diversify the income of the Ethiopian State. For what? To arm the Ethiopian State and "modernize" it's Military, and also work on improving the Agricultural Industry of Ethiopia, and improve the Ethiopian Nations infrastructure. There's just one problem as of late.

There's been an uprising in Tigray Province. It's local ruler opposed the measures of dividing the Provinces, knowing very well his own power would be cut into pieces. Having conquered the province once before, Tewodros was enraged at the rebellion. His army marches to Tigray. His wife accompanies him, and begs he show mercy…………..

Government Info
Government Type: Constitutional monarchy
Brief Explanation of Government: Mostly standard Westminster model. The legislature is called the Diet, and is made up of two houses: the elected House of Representatives, and the noble House of Lords. Legislation must pass both by a simple majority to become law, although the House of Representatives has the option to filibuster, which requires a 2/3rds majority in the House of Representatives to end. The Grand Duke nominally has the power to veto legislation, appoint a Prime Minister, and form the Cabinet, but in reality he very rarely exercises those powers, and it is expected the the monarch will appoint the head of the largest party or dominant coalition as Prime Minister and allow him to form the government.
Ideology: Liberalism, economic liberalism, aristocracy, independence, regionalism
Leader/s:
Head of State: Francis II, Grand Duke of Pomerania
Head of Government: Otto Theodor von Manteuffel, Prime Minister of Pomerania

Relations Pomerania's closest friend and ally is the Kingdom of Brandenburg. In addition to sharing prosperous trade, the two share a common interest as smaller German states that wish to protect their independence against the much-larger Austria. However, there is still some tension, as Brandenburg is envious of Pomerania's ports, and Brandenburg maintained a claim on the Pomeranian throne until fairly recently.

Relations with Austria are tense. While Austria claims it has no interest in active expansion, the Pomeranians are skeptical of this, and think Austria's long-term goal is to annex all the German states, by force if necessary. Much of Pomerania's foreign and military policy revolves around defending the country against Austria.

Pomerania and the Hanseatic League are nominally friendly, but their overlapping trading interest causes conflict. While Pomerania dominates most of the Baltic Sea, the Hansa dominates the North Sea and has overseas colonies, leading to jealousy from Pomerania. Still, the two have been drawn together due to their shared desire to maintain their independence against Austria, so the two nations have tried to smooth relations between each other.

Pomerania has a mixed relationship with Ruthenia. While Pomerania desires Ruthenia's lands in Danzig and Pomerelia, Pomerania knows they have no chance of standing up against the Ruthenian giant. In addition, Pomerania sees Ruthenia as a valuable counter-weight to Austria, and a possible ally if war with Austria breaks out. Furthermore, Pomerania is much indebted to Ruthenia due to Ruthenia's attempts to preserve Pomeranian independence, as Ruthenia has little reason to let a unified Germany happen that could potentially rival Ruthenia.

Population Info
Brief Description of your people: The Pomeranians are a Germanic people who have long inhabited this region on the Baltic. They take pride in their landed, noble heritage, but they have more recently embraced trading and mercantile ways. However, while they are open to the money of the world, the Pomeranians are fiercely independent, and believe large empires are inherently inferior to smaller nation-states made up largely of one culture or group. This is partly a response to the growing power of Austria, which Pomerania sees as a threat. Above all else, the Pomeranians are proud and patriotic, and will always fend their hoeland.
Religion: Lutheran Protestantism
Ethnicity: German/White
Main/Accepted Culture(s): German
Other Cultures: Polish, Swedish

Military Info
Army: The Grand Ducal Army of Pomerania consists of 14,350 men. Of those men, 1,500 are part of the Harbour Corps, which serves to protect Pomerania's ports and trading ventures. The remaining 12,850 are part of the Regular Army, which defends Pomerania's borders. The Pomeranian Army is of average to above-average quality. In recent years funding for the army has increased significantly, but despite this the military is not a top priority for Pomerania, as the Grand Duchy is more focused on trade and naval affairs.
Navy: The navy consists of 13 ironclads, 20 steamships, 32 gunboats, and 3 river patrol boats. The navy, which consists of the Baltic Fleet based in Stralsund and the Auxiliary Fleet based in Swinemünde, is primarily charged with protecting Pomerania's trade ships and enforcing Pomeranian naval dominance in the Baltic. The Grand Ducal Navy is well-trained and uses modern techniques in training and ship construction. Overall, having a well-maintained navy is a top priority for the Pomeranian government.

Other Info
Brief Description of your Economy: Pomerania is a very mercantile society, relying on both trade and agricultural. In the interior, great manoral farms and plantations grow food crops like wheat, sugar, and potatoes, and raising livestock. This food is used to either feed Pomerania itself or exported through overland trade routes. On the coast and along the inland bays, private trading firms dominate financial hubs like Stralsund and Stettin. These firms trade all over the Baltic, and are especially prominent as a middleman for Nordic goods like fur and ore. In terms of economic policy, the Pomeranian government was formerly mercantilist, but has been adopting more free trade practices since the 1830s. Tariffs have been dramatically lowered, and free trade agreements have been signed with Sweden and Brandenburg. Pomerania's only economic fear is the Hansa, which has a more global trade network and dreams of breaking out of its North Sea base to dominate the Baltic as well.
Goals: Protect independence, increase trading power in the Baltic, closer relations with Brandenburg, encourage smaller states to breakaway from Austria's confederation
History:
The Duchy of Pomerania existed for over 500 years, ruling a prosperous region along the Baltic Sea. However, this prosperity was rudely interrupted by the arrival of the Thirty Years’ War. First, King Christian IV of Denmark staged his unsuccessful intervention into the war via Pomerania, wreaking havoc as a grueling back-and-forth war was fought in the duchy. Then, in 1630, King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden launched his intervention, and he found significantly more success. While the Swedish intervention was not as devastating as the Danish attack, it still did significant damage to the economy and population. More importantly, it saw the demise of the ruling house of House of Griffin. The last Griffin Duke of Pomerania, Bogislaw XIV, died in 1637. Bogislaw’s nephew Ernst Bogislaw von Croÿ tried to preserve Pomerania’s independence, but he lacked support from the people and the other nations of Europe. In the 1648 Peace of Westphalia, all of Pomerania was given to Sweden, while the neighboring region of Pomerelia went to Poland.

The Swedes quickly set up a bureaucracy and regional government in Pomerania, hoping that efficient government would garner them support from a populace and nobility who saw the Swedes as occupies who had destroyed Pomerania. While this calmed tensions for a brief period, the Pomeranians still chafed under Swedish rule, especially since a new Swedish nobility had moved in and was attempting to displace the native Pomeranian German nobility. The German nobility found support for their cause in their German neighbor to the south, the Electorate of Brandenburg and its ruling House of Hohenzollern.

From 1689 onward, the Hohenzollerns provided secret aid to the German nobles, culminating in the Pomeranian Revolt of 1696. After a three-year struggle, the Brandenburgers and the Danes sent troops into Pomerania to aid the rebels, which resulted in a peace being negotiated the same year. A new Duchy of Pomerania was declared, and Albert Frederick of Brandenberg-Schwedt, a son of the Prussian elector Frederick William, was made the Duke of Pomerania. As Duke, Albert Frederick’s priority was on rebuilding Pomerania and building a new economy based on agriculture and trade. He built up the ports at Stralsund/Rügen and Sassnitz, fostered good ties with the Pomeranian noble families, and secured international recognition for Pomerania. This gained Albert Frederick widespread popularity among his people, and he was deeply mourned upon his death in 1731.

Albert Frederick was succeeded by his son Charles. While Albert Frederick’s rule was marked by conciliation and cooperation, Charles took a more autocratic approach, ignoring the input of his nobles and micromanaging many aspects of the Duchy. In addition, while Albert Frederick’s foreign policy was focused on making Pomerania strong and independent, Charles drew Pomerania closer to his native Brandenburg. Charles also entered Pomerania into the Seven Years' War in 1757 on the side of Brandenburg, which was unpopular and furthered the perception that Duke Charles served Brandenburg before Pomerania. This drew the resentment of the nobles, but seeing few other options, they remained loyal to Duke Charles until his death in 1762.

Charles died without legitimate issue, throwing the succession into dispute. A Council of State was set up by the Pomeranian nobility to govern until a new Duke was selected. While the Council of State debated a course of action, rumors swirled that Frederick II of Brandenburg planned to use his status as the closest living relative of Duke Charles to assume direct control of Pomerania and annex it to Brandenburg. This was something the independent-minded Pomeranians could not abide, so on October 23, 1762, the Council of State declared that with the throne vacant, the monarchy was hereafter abolished, and the Republic of Pomerania was born.

The idea of a German republic shocked Europe, and they were reluctant to recognize this new state. Frederick II declared the republicans rebels, and invaded Pomerania to ‘restore order’. However, a blinding snowstorm made operations difficult, and the bitter cold caused the Brandenburgers to suffer mounting casualties. Then, as the Brandenburg army was freezing and tired, the Pomeranians led by General Heinrich von Manteuffel launched a surprise attack, decisively defeating the Brandenburg forces at the Battle of Anklam. After this crushing defeat, Brandenburg withdrew, and a ceasefire was negotiated. Pomerania remained on guard from further attacks from Brandenburg or Austria, but due to those nations between busy fighting on other fronts, none came. In the meantime, a permanent government was formed, and due his reputation as the hero of Pomeranian independence, Heinrich von Mantueffel was elected the first Chief Minister of Pomerania.

Von Manteuffel assumed office on January 1, 1763, but by then he was 66 years old, and due to both his health and a desire for the new republic to outlive him, von Manteuffel pledged to only serve for five years before stepping down. But in those five years von Manteuffel was quite productive. The first order of business was obtaining a permanent peace treaty and diplomatic recognition of Pomerania. Pomerania's diplomats managed to secure this through the Treaty of Paris of 1763 which ended the Seven Years' War: In exchange for peace and Brandenburg and other European states recognizing the Republic of Pomerania, Brandenburg gained the right to duty-free trade with Pomerania and the right to use Pomeranian ports. Other accomplishments of von Manteuffel's tenure included signing favorable trade deals with the Commonwealth and the Hanseatic League, and funding new trading schemes. At the end of von Manteuffel’s term, he stepped down, and Frederick William von Kleist was elected the second Chief Minister. Von Kleist served two terms for a total of ten years, during which time he sought to mend relations with Brandenburg (with some success), established relations with Great Britain and France, and strengthened farm subsidies to support Pomeranian agriculture.

As a whole, the Republic of Pomerania was prosperous and content, and an initially uncertain diplomatic situation was quickly turned around and ensured the Republic’s survival for the foreseeable future. But under the Republic, the nobility’s grasp on power was near-absolute, and there was intense social stratification and wealth inequality. The urban poor and small farmers felt neglected by the Republican government, and their economic situation declined as their opportunities for advancement shrunk. Discontent grew, and the Pomeranian poor were looking for a savior.

In 1789, revolution broke out in France. A few years later, the king and queen of France were executed, and a republic declared. While some in Pomerania wanted to support the fledgling fellow republic, the nobles in power feared what would happen if the lower-classes taking power and overthrowing their superiors was endorsed, and thus stayed neutral. However, this neutrality couldn’t last forever. In 1805, after Napoleon Bonaparte declared himself Emperor of the French, a French army under Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte approached the borders of Pomerania. Almost immediately afterwards, popular protests broke out in cities across Pomerania, asking for the government to ally with France. The protesters both feared a French invasion and thought that being incorporated into the Napoleonic sphere of influence would encourage more democracy and social mobility in the republic. Under pressure, Chief Minister Bernhard-Friedrich von Bassewitz signed an alliance with Napoleonic France, which included joining the Confederation of the Rhine and declaring war on the anti-Napoleonic coalition of Britain, Austria, and the Commonwealth.

Pomerania tried to contribute as few troops as it could, especially since the Continental System that restricted Pomerania’s trade meant the republic’s treasury was nearly bare and had to be supported by French and Dutch subsidies. However, Pomerania was forced to send a 10,000-man contingent to support Napoleon’s invasion of the Commonwealth. The cold and unsuccessful campaign devastated Napoleon’s Grande Armée, and the Pomeranian division was no different. Thankfully, however, the Pomeranian division’s commander Friedrich Wilhelm von Driesen was a clever man and did his best to minimize losses. By the tine the Pomeranian contingent made it back to Napoleonic territory, 4,500 men still remained. These men would form the core of a new Pomeranian army, as Pomerania sought to rebuild its army. In 1813, shortly after the Battle of Leipzig, Pomerania joined the Coalition against Napoleon. Von Bassewitz, having used the Napoleonic wars to justify staying in office longer than any previous Chief Minister, saw the tide was turning against Napoleon, and hoped joining with the Coalition would ensure the republic’s survival after the war ended.

In the post-war Congress of Vienna, von Bassewitz personally headed the Pomeranian delegation to the congress. Von Bassewitz argued passionately for the republic, but the other Coalition leaders were skeptical. Remembering the circumstances that led to Pomerania allying with France in the first place, the Coalition (particularly Austria) saw Pomerania as a land with a troublesome lower-class that could be a breeding ground for a future Napoleon. Despite von Bassewitz’s pleas, Austria convinced the Coalition that only a strong monarchy could control Pomerania’s rebellious population, and the Congress declared the formation of the Grand Duchy of Pomerania. Von Bassewitz pledged to continue to serve the new government as Prime Minister, but in declining health and crushed by his failure to preserve the republic, he died in 1816.

Once the Grand Duchy was established, the main question was who to put on the throne. The Coalition distrusted the native Pomeranian nobility, so a foreign monarch would have to be selected. Hoping for one last chance, several former Napoleonic officials like Michel Ney, Joachim Murat, and Jerome Bonaparte asked to be given the Crown, but they were rejected. The next contender was the Danish royal family, but the current Danish royal house was dying out and had no chance of providing a long-term dynasty. Finally, a most unlikely candidate was put forward: Infante Francisco de Paula, youngest son of Prince Charles of Spain and cousin to King Sancho. With few other suitable candidates available and believing a complete outsider wouldn’t have a stake in the internal squabbles of Pomerania, the offer was extended to Infante Francisco. He accepted, and in 1816, became Francis I, Grand Duke of Pomerania.

As Francis was unfamiliar with the Pomeranian political landscape and barely even spoke German, Francis at first relied heavily on his ministers, especially the war hero Friedrich Wilhelm von Driesen, who was Prime Minister from 1817 to 1827. However, as Francis learned more about his new country, he took a more active role in governance. From the 1830s onward, Francis’ rule became increasingly autocratic, as he consolidated more power within himself and sought to weaken the political and economic power of the nobility. The final straw came in 1848, when Francis issued a decree to break up large landed estates, and then shortly afterwards issued another decree that imposed an increased tax on foreign commerce. This alienated both the nobility and the merchant middle-class; even the industrial working poor were offended, as they feared losing their jobs if their employers couldn’t profitably sell their goods overseas. Inspired by similar protests across Europe, the middle-class and urban poor of Pomerania took to the streets and demanded a constitutional monarchy, while the nobility quietly urged the Grand Duke to give in to the protesters’ demands. When the retired Friedrich Wilhelm von Driesen publicly declared his support for the protesters, Francis realized he could no longer resist their demands. After 2 months of protests, Francis reluctantly agreed to become a constitutional monarch.

In 1849, the Convention of Köslin was held which created a new constitution. Under the Constitution of 1849, the Pomeranian government was modeled on the British system, with the Grand Duke nominally having reserve powers like appointing the ministers and calling elections, but could only act with the advice and consent of the Prime Minister. Francis was intensely annoyed with these restrictions, but with a few exceptions, he abided by them. The fact that von Driesen came out of retirement to serve as Prime Minister for the first two years likely also played a part in the Constitution’s success. Under the post-1848 government, relations with Brandenburg were finally normalized, eventually leading to the signing of an alliance; Pomerania withdrew from the German Confederation in response to the dominance of Austria; trade was increased with a focus on reducing tariffs; and education was increased through the founding of new schools across the country.

Grand Duke Francis died in 1865, and the throne passed to his son, who became Francis II of Pomerania. Francis II has so far taken little interest in governance, contenting himself with arts patronage and socializing with fellow European royalty while his Prime Minister Otto Theodor von Manteuffel runs the affairs of state. However, while some of the lower-classes might prefer a stronger monarchy to protect their interests, the current system suits the nobles just fine. While not as bad as before the 1849 Constitution, which expanded voting rights and allowed more social nobility, Pomerania is still a stratified society with an entrenched nobility. Time will tell if the nobility will keep their power or be forced to give up ground to the common people. But no matter what, Pomerania will remain!

I would recommend some details on the army, 45k is within number parameters, but description on types of troops, maybe a simple description on equipment. Navy probably would be non existent (also an un-needed expenditure). Further explanation of the government would also be much appreciated, otherwise, looking nice so far.

I would recommend you change those things before I make further judgement on the app, but looking nice so far.

Thanks for the feedback! I tried to divert a bit further from Prussia, also toned down the military numbers a bit. I changed the 30-years war bit as well (though Brandenburg and Sweden weren't allied through all of it, I agree the invasion of Brandenburg by Sweden a few decades later is probably a better example of tensions between Sweden and Brandenburg).

Something that Columbia did not mention and that I have only recently added to my app's history, but something that was an integral part of the lore from the beginning, is related to Brandenburg's membership in the Confederation. All German states joined the Confederation after the Congress of Vienna much like in real life, and the status quo was preserved during the 1848 Revolutions - as it was these revolutions that allowed Austria to gain more direct power inside the Confederation, by providing military aid to many of the German monarchs who struggled to keep their throne. This, combined with Austria's traditional diplomatic and political influence made it the uncontested German leader in 1854, when the Second Rhine Crisis began. It is during this Crisis that the constitution of the Confederation was negotiated and amended - leading to the infamous Compromise/Ausgleich which led to the current situation, and it is during this crisis that Brandenburg would have refused to ratify the Ausgleich and would have left the Confederation, backed by an informal support from what was then still the Commonwealth, soon to be Ruthenia.

I'll alter my app accordingly :)!

I would recommend shrinking your military. 1-2 percent is generally the best number, though I could understand if you went to the 2 percent owing to the situation in the Zhous. I would advise you consider a little more history as well, as the history section more seems a description of your state than the history of South Jou before and after the civil war. Looking good so far though.

Government Info
Government Type: Constitutional Monarchy
Brief Explanation of Government: Under her 1834 Constitution, mainland Iberia, the Rif, Sardinia, Sicily, the Canaries, and the Azores are represented in the legislature by a lower house, the Chamber of Deputies, and the upper house - the Senate, in an arrangement largely inspired by the American constitution. Each Spanish province receives three senators regardless of size, while each province's deputies are apportioned by population. However, the Spanish model departs from the American model in its investment of supreme executive power, which in Spain's case comes from the monarch. Firstly, it is the king's prerogative to appoint one of the three senators from each province, virtually guaranteeing that the body will not vote against him. The king also has considerable veto power over the Congreso; he can engage a line-item veto to kill sections of bills unattractive to him. Vetoes can only be overridden with a three-quarters vote in both houses, which makes the prospect unlikely at best. While the king cannot declare a war without Congress' approval, he does have wide latitude to conduct all manner of foreign policy and diplomacy without oversight, the sole exception being the signing of treaties. The monarch of course cannot be legally impeached in any way, and Congress does not play much of a role in the ascension of a new monarch, as only the royally-controlled Regencia can declare a new king or queen.
Spain's Caribbean provinces (Cuba, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico) are too distant to be governed effectively through Congress, so they each have their own devolved legislatures with significant domestic powers. Angola, Guinea-Bissau and Goa are administered directly by the Royal Ministry with negligible local rule, while Palestine is governed through a convoluted and arcane mixture of direct rule, holy orders for Christian communities, imams loyal to the state, and autonomous Arab clans.
Ideology: Conservatism, Monarchism, Catholic Nationalism
Leader/s: Phillip VII Bourbon, King of Spain and Portugal
Relations:

France - Cordial, bordering on cool. Spain is eager to avoid any sort of European land conflict, so it will probably pursue a treaty of some sort.

Naples - Poor. Naples continues to claim Sicily as its own, and naval skirmishes are not uncommon.

Papal States - Excellent. Spain has always been allied closely with the Papacy, and will seek to preserve the Pope's territorial independence.

Hungary - Cordial. They don't share any territorial disputes, so the Hungarians can at least be trusted not to oppose Spain's ambitions in the Mediterranean

Great Britain - Good. Spaniards still appreciate British aid during the Napoleonic Wars, and Phillip VII has not found the Gibraltar issue to be worth pursuing, given that he would rather have the British Navy present in the Mediterranean as a possible counterweight to the Hellenes. They might end up being a colonial rival in Africa, though.

German Confederation - Good. Spain has no possible territorial disputes with the Germans, and they are a growing trade partner and a counterbalance to the French, should relations between France and Spain go south.

Hellenic Empire - Cool, bordering on bad. Spain and Greece have a fair amount of trade, but the issue of Crete has become increasingly contentious.

Egypt- Poor. Egypt has never really forgiven Jose Coloma, or Spain, for conquering the Levant. The two countries continue to exchange a great deal of trade, but the conflict over Palestine might be coming to a head sooner rather than later. Spain views Egypt as an imminent military threat.

Morocco - Poor. Morocco resents Spain's control of the Rif, although Spain has no further plans to expand southwards into the country, with the War Ministry viewing potential campaigns of occupation as too costly. Border skirmishes in the mountains are common, but Spain is content to just hold the Rif and control the Straits of Gibraltar.

Population Info
Brief Description of your people: The dual kingdoms are a diverse realm with myriad ethno-linguistic groups inhabiting its borders. Primary among these are the Spanish and Portuguese, who dominate Iberia and are therefore the two dominant ethnic groups across the whole country. Spain depends on delegating political autonomy to its many subject groups in order to maintain control; for example, the teaching of Spanish is forbidden in Portugal and Sicily, in order to guarantee the Portuguese and Sicilians a degree of ethnic identity that keeps them culturally separate but tied politically to the Spanish crown. Spanish predominates among the Caribbean territories, where many citizens are of mixed Spanish-indigenous descent, or mestizo. Portuguese, meanwhile, is the preferred tongue of the crown's far-flung possessions in Africa and India (inherited from Portugal), and Portuguese adventurers and administrators are a common sight in the colonies. Palestine is the only territory where the indigenous language and people, Arabs, are dominant. In recent decades, Spain has been content to leave the Muslim communities to their own devices, so long as they pay their taxes and provide recruits for the national levy.

Religion: Roman Catholicism is the state religion of Spain. It is the overwhelmingly dominant faith in Iberia proper, as well as in Sicily, Spanish Angola, the Moroccan Rif, and the remaining Caribbean territories. Islam is a minority faith in the Rif, but predominates strongly in Spanish Palestine, where colonial authorities have had to be more conciliatory towards local imams. Although weakened from their Hapsburg heyday, the Spanish clergy still play a mildly important role in government. It is not uncommon for cardinals and bishops to find themselves holding cabinet posts or colonial offices, which gives Spain a lesser degree of separation of church and state than is to be found across much of the rest of Europe.
Ethnicity: Spanish, Portuguese, Sicilian, Greek, Arab and Berber are the only ones legitimately recognized.
Main/Accepted Culture(s): Spanish, Portuguese, Sicilian, Greek/Cretan
Other Cultures: Moroccan, Berber, Levantine/Arab, Black African, Indian

Military Info
Army: Active - 90,000
Reserve - 190,000
Fuerza Colonial - 40,000 (Cuba, Guinea-Bissau, Angola, India)
The Ejercito Real is the land force of Spain, with active duty, reserve and colonial elements. Only during her post-Napoleonic reforms did Spain come to fully standardize the army's weaponry, munitions, uniforms and training. The regular army operates under a strictly meritocratic system and focuses on maximizing mobility and speed of deployment; an important quality for defending Spain's disparate territories. It is an all-volunteer force, held to a high standard of discipline and training. Reserve regiments are organized on a provincial basis and are often gathered through conscription periods lasting two years; while the Fuerza Colonial exists to garrison Spain's overseas colonies. The latter sub-branch is far more open to indigenous officers than the regular army. The aristocracy and the ultra-wealthy may exempt themselves from conscription into the reserves if they so wish, but to do they must pay the impuesto de paz, or peace tax.

Navy: The Armada Real is the naval force of the Dual Kingdom. Long neglected since the end of Hapsburg rule, the Spanish Navy has been revitalized from about 1840 onward. As Spain cannot afford to field a massive navy, the country has instead committed to a program of ultra-modernization, creating a smaller but dangerous fleet of ironclads that is among the most advanced in the world. The great majority of Spain's naval forces are concentrated in the Flota Mediterranea, with squadrons based in Cadiz, Palermo, and Acre. The Flota del Caribe is based in Havana, while the Flota India is based in Goa and the Flota Africa in Luanda. Similar to the army, the navy is organized along strictly meritocratic lines, with the prestigious naval colleges in Lisbon and Palermo showing less and less regard for class in recent decades.

Flota Mediterranea: -15 ironclads
-8 converted ships of the line
-3 steam two-deckers
-5 cruisers
-7 steam-powered corvettes
-16 gunboats
-various support ships
Flota del Caribe: -5 ironclads
-4 converted ships of the line

Flota de Africa: - 4 ironclads

-2 converted ships of the line

Other Info
Brief Description of your Economy: Spain has made great strides in its effort to industrialize over the past 40+ years, but is still somewhat behind other European powers by virtue of having started later and having a smaller manufacturing base to begin with. Steel production has become a significant industry in the north (Vizcaya, Cantabria, Asturias) since the early 1840s, while shipbuilding is the primary economic driver in port cities such as Sevilla, Lisbon and Cadiz, spurred by the government's creation of the state-run enterprise corporación marítima nacional in 1831. Textile production in Catalonia is increasingly mechanized. However, much of Iberia remains largely agricultural in nature, especially its Mediterranean possessions of Sardinia, Sicily and Crete. Spanish Palestine has hardly changed at all from its 18th-century economy. Cuba, Hispaniola and Puerto Rico still derive the vast majority of their wealth from the export of sugarcane and tobacco, which makes industrialization less attractive there than in other provinces.

Spain's African provinces, meanwhile, are the source of lucrative profits for the government and for private businessmen and adventurers alike. The extraction of diamonds and iron from Angola create enormous revenues, while Angolan coffee feeds the caffeine craze of much of Europe. Rubber from Guinea-Bissau supplies factories all over the Dual Kingdom. And of course, there is the rumored presence of an inconceivable amount of crude oil beneath the rich Angolan soil. Lastly, Goa provides few natural resources on its own, but serves as a crucial transit point for Spanish trade with the Far East.
Goals: Expand further into Africa, avoid European wars, maintain control over disparate colonies, maybe dick around in Egypt, industrialize/modernize further

History:
1588 - Spain suffers a political and military disaster of apocalyptic proportions when the largest armada ever assembled is utterly destroyed by bad weather and the English fleet at Gravelines.

1589 - An English-Dutch counter-armada launches a campaign against Spain. Coruña is taken and sacked in May. The English proceed down the coast and lay siege to Lisbon, prompting an anti-Spanish Portuguese uprising. Smelling blood in the water, France sends a 25,000-strong army through the Pyrenees to besiege Barcelona. Lisbon falls at the end of July. Seeking to stem off total disaster, Phillip II sues for peace in August. The resulting Treaty of Halle spells the end for Spain's South American empire; everything, from Peru to Chile to Panama to Brazil to New Granada, is handed out amongst the English, French, and Dutch victors. Spain retains control of New Castille (Mexico), and Caribbean island territories such as Cuba and Hispaniola. It also clings to what were formally Portugal's slave-trading outposts along the African coast.

1590-1592 - With the absence of Peruvian silver, Spain goes into default. Phillip II barely holds onto his throne as he fends off the Portuguese rebels. He has no other choice than to pull Spanish troops out of the Netherlands, effectively ceding the region to French influence. Eventually the Portuguese loyalists triumph and Iberia stabilizes. But the Golden Century, clearly, is over.

1618-1648 and 1635-1659 - The Thirty Years' War. Religious conflict between Catholics and Protestants rages back and forth across Central Europe. Spain's treasury, though still bolstered by Mexican silver, is exhausted by the immense costs of the war. Her capacity to expand further into the Levant is nonexistent, and the local Arabs take back some territory. Worse still, Spain loses its protracted war with the French, and is forced to cede Roussillon and Perpignan. The only consolation for the Spanish is that they defeat the English-backed rebellion of John IV in Portugal, who is killed in battle in 1651. This ends the most serious threat to Spain's territorial integrity and preserves the Iberian Union.

1701-1713: Charles II Hapsburg dies childless, sparking the War of Spanish Succession. The long and protracted conflict sees France try to unite itself with Spain under Louis XIV's son Phillip, but in this the French are unsuccessful. Phillip V Bourbon is recognized as King of Spain and Portugal, but at the cost of his renunciation of the French throne. Spain loses control of Naples to the Austrians, and cedes Florida to the British. Spain's foreign policy is effectively enslaved to France.

1722: Phillip V dies, leaving the throne to his sixteen year-old son Louis. Louis is the first Bourbon born and raised in Spain, and is not nearly as much of a Francophile as his father. Various advisers seek to dominate the young monarch, but he outmaneuvers them all over the course of several years. At his insistence, the Spanish government pushes through the Rejuvenecimiento, a series of reforms intended to centralize and modernize the administration. Taxes, duties, laws and government offices are standardized across all provinces. This sparks a rebellion in Catalonia, which is put down. Louis styles his realm 'The Dual Kingdom of Spain and Portugal,' in an effort to elevate the Portuguese to a co-equal station with the Spanish.

1725- Jose Coloma, Spanish adventurer and veteran of campaigns against the Moroccans and Austrians, uses his considerable personal fortune to raise a small expedition that captures Acre from the floundering Ottoman Empire, which is embroiled in civil war. Louis is furious at first, but realizes the opportunity at hand when Coloma sends back the city's riches.

1726: An expedition under Modesto Coutinho seizes Crete from the Hellenes.

1731: Now with royal sponsorship, Coloma's second expedition captures dozens of smaller towns. Forts are established to demarcate the Spanish zone of control.

1737: A Spanish army defeats the Moroccans at the Battle of Ouezzane. As a result, the Dual Kingdom expands its holdings in the Rif region.

1740: War of Austrian Succession erupts. Despite heavy pressure from France, Louis refuses to join his cousin's side in the war. Spain remains neutral.

1748: A new expedition to Palestine seizes Nazareth and Nablus. A coalition of local Arab tribes is defeated at the Battle of Bir Al-Maksur. Luanda's population reaches 10,000 - the Spanish continue to make gradual territorial gains there.

1752: Italian general Tommaso Caracciolo seizes Jaffa from the Ottomans

1756-1763: Seven Years' War. Spain initially joins the French side, but ends up embroiled primarily with a war against Vusaan in North America. At its conclusion, Arizona and parts of Tejas are taken from New Spain.

1768: Louis 'The Great' Bourbon dies after forty-six years on the throne, making him the longest ruling monarch in Spanish history. Throne passes to his son Amadeo.

1780-1783: Spain intervenes to help the American rebels against the British. A Spanish expedition occupies Florida and parts of Georgia; in response, the British seize the city of Gibraltar. At the end of the war these territories are turned over to the newly independent Americans; but Spain has to accept the British occupation of Gibraltar.

1787: Amadeo dies, is succeeded by his younger half-brother Charles III.

1790: After a lengthy siege of Goa, a Spanish relief army defeats a joint Mughal-Mysorean force at the Battle of Jamboti, confirming Spanish control over the city and expanding their control over much of nearby Karnatka.

1793-5: General Valter Rosa launches a campaign in Palestine that captures Jerusalem and then Amman, adding a vast territory to Spanish Palestine. The Egyptians attempt to intervene, but Rosa defeats them at Gaza.

1799: Charles III dies, is succeeded by his son Phillip VI.

1808-14: Napoleon turns on Spain, previously a French ally, and invades Iberia. Phillip VI is deposed and imprisoned in Barcelona. His younger brother Prince Sancho remains at large, organizing a guerrilla resistance across the country. The British intervene to help the Spanish. War rages across the peninsula for nearly six years; but eventually Napoleon is defeated across Europe and the French are thrown out of the country. Sancho becomes king, his older brother having died in prison in 1811.

1816: Spain adopts a liberal constitution. It's soon found to be unpopular across many conservative segments of society, and political tension builds. Sancho is himself no fan of it. Mexico, having been in a near-constant state of rebellion since 1810, finally breaks away from Spain.

1820: A cabal of conservative army officers lead a coup that restores Sancho to absolute rule. A civil war erupts between supporters of the 1816 constitution and those opposed to it. Because Sancho's own son Amadeo is an avid liberal, the war comes to be known as the Amadean War, after the nickname that the rebel prince's supporters bestow on themselves.

1824-5: The conservatives triumph; father defeats son. Prince Amadeo is imprisoned. Spanish forces put down a large-scale Arab revolt with some difficulty.

1830-32: A liberal counter-coup frees Amadeo and puts him on the throne. The 2nd Amadean War begins with Sancho fleeing to Lisbon and setting up his rival government there. After a decisive victory at the Battle of Salamanca, the conservatives triumph again. Sancho retakes the throne, exiles his son, and governs by absolute decree.

1834: Sancho is persuaded to support a new constitution, which is something of a compromise between the two sides, but provides myriad concessions to the king in its support for executive power.

1843-44: 2nd Arab Revolt erupts and is defeated in Palestine.

1847: Rif War between Spain and Morocco, which Spain wins.

1849: Sancho dies, is succeeded by his son Michael, or Miguel I Bourbon.

1854: Portuguese adventurer Heitor Carreira launches an expedition deep into the Angolan jungle, acquires new territory for the crown and establishes the city of Malanje.

1856: Palermo incident takes place in Sicily. Spanish Navy clashes with that of Naples.

1861-2: pro-independence Cespedes Uprising in Cuba, which is defeated by royalists after a year of difficult and bloody fighting. The conflict leads Miguel to abolish slavery in the Caribbean, and then later across the entire Dual Kingdom.

1867: Miguel I dies. His son takes the throne as Phillip VII at the age of twenty-four. He is the first Bourbon to be born in Lisbon, and the first to be fluent in both Spanish and Portuguese.

Spain and Qian are accepted, though for Spain you actually kept new granada after the war, just a minor historical edit.

*Germany and Brandenburg are also accepted. Japan is conditionally accepted, but I would recommend that you replace Western influences and trade with more local trade, as the Chinese states would have much easier access to you than the Dutch or English.

**Ethiopia is accepted as well.

Government Info
Government Type: Bonapartist absolute monarchy.
Brief Explanation of Government: As is expected of an absolute monarchy, the Second French Empire is a centralized, authoritarian system, the pyramid of power heading directly towards the Emperor of the French, Napoleon III. The Emperor has complete executive power, can appoint ministers and promulgate laws at his leisure, and is the supreme commander of the armed forces. The French Empire, however, bears differences from a "standard" absolute monarchy, as its ideological foundations still stem from the French Revolution and the Emperor Bonaparte who succeeded it. For one, it has a constitution - the Constitution of 1852 - which, albeit obviously illiberal and undemocratic, does impose limitations and a rule of law upon the country, protects the rights of the people and establishes universal suffrage. The ideal Bonapartist emperor does not receive his power from God or from simply being at the top, but because his power stems from law and the will of the people, and these people he is supposed to protect. In that sense, it is a "modern" absolute monarchy, an authoritarian regime in the trappings of liberal ideology.
Ideology: Bonapartism is an interesting ideology stemming from the rule of Napoleon Bonaparte, and while not a uniquely French phenomenon, it is the state where it is most pronounced. It is an entirely different, populist take on dictatorship and autocracy - Bonapartists believe that the legitimacy of the ruler stems not from divine right, or power, but rather a social contract of sorts between the ruler and the people. It coopts liberal, even radical ideas and selectively implements them for the good of the people, to ensure the stability of the regime not through force or hierarchy, but rather through charisma and mass rhetoric. Bonapartism is militaristic, nationalist and anti-elitist, pronouncing expansionism and mobilization of the masses in foreign affairs.

(Though this is not the case right now, as it's only 1869, this would be the reason why some historians would later call the second French Empire proto-fascist, as it employed a similar system of "dictatorship from the masses")

With the growing radicalization of the Second Empire and the assumption of power by the Saint-Cyriens, France is also slowly turning towards Saint-Simonianism. It is a French social and political movement of the first half of the 19th century, which looks at the ongoing Industrial Revolution and sees a fundamental process which will transform humanity from the ground up, eliminate old ideas of temporal and spiritual power and usher in an age of "industry-worship" - science and technology assuming the role of the medieval theocracy. Saint-Simonianism can be called a strain of early, pre-Marxian utopian socialism, believing that the Industrial Revolution will finally create equality between men. It's rather utopian, spiritualistic, and if one knows about Futurism, then somewhat associated with that, albeit far less violent. Historically, moderate Saint-Simonianism was influential among French economists and scientists, and the Bonapartist regime has co-opted their ideas. This pushes the French Empire to embrace the Industrial Revolution even more so than they did in OTL, pretty much.

Relations
  • German Confederation: It will be a victory for French arms if such an abhorrent name is removed from the dictionary of international relations.
  • Great Britain: The Perfidious Albion was, is, and will be an enemy of France. This rivalry may have moments of reprieve then and there, but it will never cease, not until France finally enforces its superiority over both sides of the La Manche.
  • Italy: France endorsed the cause of Italian unification, partially as a measure to offset the growing Austrian power, and sees in them a possible ally of circumstance. Should the Italians be willing to follow suit, of course.
  • Spain-Portugal: France has no ambitions towards its southern neighbour. The one thing they wish of them is to see them neutral in any European war where France is involved.
  • Ruthenia: However nationalist and convinced of their Napoleonic superiority, the French know that any war with Germany will not be an easy victory. In Ruthenia, they see a potential ally against the solidified Anglo-Austrian axis, a fellow hegemon of reaction who has already shown their willingness to prevent a complete unification of Germany. The pivot of the French foreign service in Eastern Europe is to court the Eastern juggernaut.
  • Minor German States: On one hand, they are German. On the other hand, they have denied the chance to join the Austrian-orchestrated unification of much of Germany. The French policy towards Brandenburg, Pomerania, the Hansa Cities and others is to peak to them in positive terms and court them if possible - but keep their hopes of alliance firmly second-rate.
And Brandenburg specifically holds a personal union over Belgium, which is in the French interest sphere. This throws a wrench in their relations, for sure.
  • Netherlands and Switzerland: Stay neutral in the German conflict or go home.
  • Hungary: Somewhat distant as far as European relations are concerned, but France treats them as the third wheel of the Anglo-Austrian Axis. So, no positive foreign relations, but no expectations of serious threat, either. In any possible Hungaro-Greek or Hungaro-Ruthenian conflict, France would stand against Hungary.
    ---
  • Foreign Revision Directions:
    • Dissolution of the German Confederation and establishment of a satellite Rhenish state.
    • French Buffer Zone - satellization of Belgium and Luxembourg, enforced neutrality of Netherlands and Spain, French alignment of Italy (with possible Franco-Italian border revision).
    • Elimination of British influence on the European continent.
    • African colonialism - axis Algiers-Guinea Bay and axis Dakar-Djibouti.
    • The Mediterranean as the "French lake" - French alignment of Egypt, Greece and Italy, French/Spanish annexation of Gibraltar, requisition of additional naval bases in Turkish territory and construction of the Suez Canal.

Army: Following the takeover of the Saint-Cyriens and analysis of the likely war scenario between France and the German Confederation, the Armée française has been reformed from the ground up. The previous system of ballot conscription has been replaced by a shorter term universal conscription, increasing the number of reservists, while the economic policy of Dirigisme allowed the French state to take over critical arms manufacturing industries in order to maintain a constant stream of supply for the army. The old approach of the Emperor being surrounded by a caste of conservative generals was replaced with a military general staff, modelled somewhat after similar concepts of army staff in Austria and elsewhere, though conservatism within the military high command remains. Though by no means unbeatable, the French Army is nevertheless a fearsome opponent on European battlefields, combining large size, supply, a longstanding military tradition and the archetypal morale of the individual soldier.

The French Army has 400 thousand standing soldiers with a mobilization plan of 800 thousand men under arms in wartime, as well as the Garde Mobile defensive militia composed of those not conscripted for one reason or another - it is 400 thousand strong.
Navy: Though not as critical to the French war effort as their land forces, the Marine Nationale is nevertheless a force to be reckoned with, built and developed with engagements against the British Royal Navy in mind. The painful losses against the British in the Napoleonic Wars accelerated naval research and development in the post-Napoleonic years to make up for it - France was a pioneer in the field of modern naval artillery and submarines, among others. It is an important arm of the French colonial empire and boasts a total of 501 ships of various size and caliber. Among those, 53 are ironclads and 9 are ironclad turret ships. The largest armored vessel in the French Navy is the Rochambeau, a monster floating battery with a burthen of 5,090 tons, and is propelled by engines of 1,000 nominal horse-power. She was constructed to serve as a powerful ram, and carries an armament of fourteen guns.

Other Info
Brief Description of your Economy: Although it is an anachronistic term in 1869, the French economic system can safely be described with Dirigisme. In opposition to the ideal of laissez faire prominent across much of Europe, France operates with an interventionist economic system, the state has a direct hand in the control of the economy, but rather than using this power for state planning, it cooperates with large businesses in order to push through policy and grants beneficial to them. The amount of state controlled industries is low, but recognizable, especially in the field of arms production. France is a country in economic transition. It has several notable industrial regions around Paris and in the North-Northeast, but, on the other hand, it is still rather agrarian. In recent years, this economic transition has been recognized by the French government and Saint-Simonian ideas are in the process of being implemented to further improve the efficiency of the industry through implementation of new technologies and techniques, such as lighting. Regardless, France is unquestionably a modern economy by 19th century terms, boasting a considerable industrial base, a large population, a variety of exports from food produces to industrial machines, and developed trade with much of the world.
Goals: Achieve as much as France's foreign directions as possible (as listed above). If I fail, then at least make sure everyone has fun while I'm failing (and maybe I'll do something with an alt-Paris Commune, who knows)
History: The first change to the history of France came in the second half of the 16th century. The Anglos and Spaniards may know that conflict as the Atlantic War, but to the French, it was the conclusion of the Wars of Religion and the Spanish intervention to support the Catholic League in France. Having finally pushed out the Spanish occupants from their country, Henry IV of France made a pact with the English monarchy to strike at the core of the Spanish Empire, nipping it in the bud, forcing it to sign a humiliating peace in Vervins, and dividing its nascent New World Empire between the victors. Though still shaken and war exhausted, France now reigned over vast lands in the New World, which would swiftly fuel their recovery and reconstruction.

The 17th century would come to be known as the French Century - culminating in the reign of the Sun King, Louis XIV, France was at the apogee of its power, fueled by mass production of precious metals and resources from New World mines to create a massive military, able to threaten the rest of Europe and intervene in wars from Lisbon to Warsaw. It played a pivotal role in the Thirty Years War and the following post-Westphalian conflicts, as well as competed against Britain in the New World - France would find itself victorious by helping Britain's American colonies separate from their overlord in a war of independence in the second half of the 18th century. The illustrious halls of the nobility and endless legions of the military covered up a nation divided between deep social and political issues, this fuse doused by gasoline by liberal ideas in the Enlightenment period, until it finally ignited in 1789. The French Revolution began.

The heart of Europe and its perennial power burned with bloodthirsty liberalism, executing its king Louis XVI, its nobles, and thousands of others during the Reign of Terror, fought off invasions by reactionary powers from all sides, and ultimately became overthrown by the ambitious officer Napoleon Bonaparte, who crowned himself Emperor Napoleon I. The following Napoleonic Period is a moment of phoenix-like pride for the French nation and a moment of terror for the rest of Europe, a time when lands up to the Vistula all swore fealty to a single, revolutionary monarch. It was a phoenix episode, however. A draining insurgency in Spain, a failed invasion into Ruthenia, an inability to break the back of Britain, all spelled the end for Napoleon. In 1815, he was exiled to the South Atlantic - but his successors and progeny remained. The Bourbon monarchy in France was restored... for some time.

The revolutionary spirit cannot be crushed easily. In 1830, the French people rose to another revolution. Though, at first, they merely demanded to replace King Charles X with his more liberal relative Louis Philippe, their demands radicalized once Philippe chose to flee and abandon the French people. No royals were guillotined this time, but a July Republic was declared in its wake. Unlike the First Republic which existed for a brief time after the French Revolution, it was considerably more conservative, seeking to placate the royalists and reactionaries as well as revolutionary radicals - and thus, after a few years of serious tension, managed to avoid a foreign intervention and a repeat of the first Revolution. This order was not going to last for long. France once again barreled towards an another revolution in the 1840s. The Spring of Nations was approaching and the French republicans, as well as the nascent socialist movement, saw their country as the flagbearer of the revolutionary wave. Meanwhile, in French courts, noble coffee houses and even some foreign embassies, the people said "France needs a Napoleon again". And a Napoleon is what they got.

The election of 1846 saw the election of Louis Napoleon Bonaparte, the nephew of the late Napoleon I, as President of the French Republic. Though an arch-conservative and an imperialist, he was unique in that he was able to mobilize the French masses and divert them away from the revolutionary cause with promises, rhetoric and populist reforms. He did not even hide his authoritarian tendencies, and this presidency would be a spark which lit a fire. Liberals and socialists arose in mass protests in 1848, nearly forcing Napoleon out of his presidency completely and calling for the establishment of a revolutionary republic. This time, the army stayed loyal to Napoleon and his increasingly authoritarian regime, but by the time the risings and barricades in Paris were quelled, France turned to witness that the revolution attempt on its soil sparked the Spring of Nations, a wave of revolutions from the Atlantic to the Urals. Ironically, in this moment, France became a champion of reaction. Alongside Britain, it intervened in the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and carved out a protectorate in Syria, and moved its forces north, to the Rhineland, to prevent it from falling under revolution. In 1850, at the apogee of his popularity and power, the President assumed the throne of Emperor of the French, Napoleon III.

However, difficulties soon arose, and they came in the form of the Second Rhine Crisis. In 1848, under the guise of "preventing the Rhenish lands from falling under revolutionary control", French soldiers occupied the Rhineland - but, first of all, France did not even hide its true intentions of annexing the "natural borders of France", and second of all, the French occupation was highly unpopular both in the Rhineland and outside of it. France imposed an exploitative occupation policy on the region, using forced resource requisitions to siphon its wealth and transfer industrial engineering to the French heartland. A war broke out between France and Austria, of limited scale, as both of the nations were still reeling from their own revolutions at the time. By 1849, the French forces were forced to depart from the Rhine, though the animosity over the region has remained ever since.

The aftermath of the Second Rhine Crisis saw France isolated in the diplomatic scene, witnessing the buildup of an Anglo-Austrian axis directed towards them, and with troubles at home. The revolutionary wave starting in France in 1848 had its aftershocks, and anti-Bonapartiste resistance began to rise during the 1850s. This growing internal unrest, coupled with the perception of a foreign threat always ready to strike, forced France to lunge even further to reaction - as this is where a new faction, the Saint-Cyriens, come in. The Saint-Cyriens are a cadre of young, politicized officers coming from the Military Academy of Saint-Cyr, many of them not even noble, who grew to see France as a weakening state, which needs a national revival and a strong hand to guide it forward. In 1862, the Saint-Cyriens executed a pseudo-coup, pressuring Emperor Napoleon III to stall reforms and restore the office of President of the Council of Ministers, controlled by the young officers. Though he retained a large amount of nominal power, the Emperor has been effectively sidelined, the true power in the country now wielded by the young officer cadre, who have enthusiastically followed through with industrial and military reform in preparation for a final confrontation with the German state next door. Though the Saint-Cyriens, and their current Minister President, Georges Boulanger, have a firm grip over the nation, the fate of them and the entire Second Empire hinges entirely on the result of the inevitable Second Franco-Austrian War...

WIP app.

Generic Info
Nation Name: The Empire of Brazil
Symbols: The flag is a red ensign with England’s flag in the canton and defaced by a Southern Cross on the fly. The anthem is “Advance Brazil Fair”, and the national animal is the caiman.
Location: 66
Population: 14,000,000
Capital City: Kingston (Rio de Janeiro)

Government Info
Government Type: Federal parliamentary constitutional monarchy
Brief Explanation of Government: Brazil is a constitutional monarchy, with an Emperor as head of state, a prime minister, the senate, and house of representatives. The Emperor has the ability to propose laws, which can be struck down by a 2/3rds vote in each chamber. Likewise, he can veto laws, but they must be struck down by a similar vote.
Ideology: Monarchism, Federalism, Democracy (claimed), Oligarchy (in practive), Slavery
Leader/s: Emperor Brooke, Prime Minister Pickens
Relations

United Kingdom: Brazil broke away peacefully from the U.K. and has no meaningful border disputes with their former master, along with enjoying large quantities of trade. However, views of Britain vary wildly in the nation. The slave-owning elites largely view Britain with contempt, believing them to be hypocrites who condemn slavery despite having introduced it to Brazil. Britain’s forceful end of the slave trade has exemplified these feelings, with many Brazillians viewing it as taking away their sovereignty. On the other hand, many people, including the monarchy, view Britain as a parent figure to follow, and believe that the only way for Britain to advance is to follow Britain’s example and end slavery.

The Netherlands, France, and Hansa: Brazil wishes to expand trade with these nations, and the government has openly mentioned their interest in purchasing their colonies in the Guyanas. Otherwise, Brazil does not have many interests with them.

The American Commonwealth: Brazil views the American Commonwealth as another post-colonial Anglo state, and relations between the two are quite friendly. However, Brazil does not believe that their aspirations for Manifest Destiny will go well, and has thus avoided any official alliances with them.

Vusaan: Brazil is horrified of Vusaan, and fears nothing more than unchecked Vusaan dominance of the Americas. Brazil stresses their isolationism, and makes sure to avoid conflict with the rising American power. Though, some factions wish to work with Vusaan to maintain stability in the Americas.

Gran Colombia and the Andean states: Brazil doesn’t really care about Gran Colombia or the Andean states, and is largely content regarding its western borders. They have friendly relations with Gran Colombia, and just ignore the native states in the Andes.

The Argentinian States: Brazil has tried to keep itself out of external affairs, but the urge to expand southwards is strong amongst many. Brazil’s small industry is based in the south, and thus many feel a buffer is needed to protect it. As of the moment, however, nothing is being done.

Population Info
Brief Description of your people: Brazil is geographically contiguous, save for the islands Argentina will never get, but ethnically and culturally diverse. From natives in the Amazon, to Africans brought over as slaves, and to the European majority, Brazil can not be described as any one thing. Though the government would see to it that Brazil be a white, Protestant nation, reality refutes this.
Religion: Majority Protestant, with a sizeable Catholic minority from original Portuguese inhabitants and Catholic immigration.
Ethnicity: Anglo-Celtic and other European, African, Native American, and numerous racially mixed people
Main/Accepted Culture(s): Brazillian (Similar to IRL Southern culture, but more racially mixed)
Other Cultures: Though slavery has torn Africans away from their old continent, it has not torn them away from their culture. The large black minority has many old traditions that they have kept loyal to, even despite their forced servitude. Likewise, many natives remained untouched by “civilization”.

Military Info
Army: WIP
Navy: WIP

Other Info
Brief Description of your Economy: The economy of Brazil is based largely around agriculture, with the ruling planter class controlling a large chunk of the economy and arable land. While there has been some industrialization in the southern parts of the country, and some railroads constructed, most people in the country are still farmers.
Goals: Brazil, as of the moment, seeks to simply live in isolation and expand its trade. However, many politicians have aspirations for the peaceful purchase of the Guyanas, and some wish to expand south towards the Parana river.

Goals: Brazil, as of the moment, seeks to simply live in isolation and expand its trade. However, many politicians have aspirations for the peaceful purchase of the Guyanas, and some wish to expand south towards the Parana river.
History:

Brazil was initially colonized by the Portuguese, who established outposts across the Atlantic coast. They would establish numerous plantations in the northern part of the country, and over a hundred thousand Portuguese settlers would arrive. However, in the late 1500s, war between Britain and the Iberians erupted, and the British took Brazil. They would go further into the interior of Brazil, with immigrants arriving from the U.K. eventually overtaking the Portuguese population. As time would go on, these colonists would become more self-sustaining and develop an identity of their own. The British would break Brazil up into numerous self-governing colonies, much like those in North America.

Brazil did not initially break off like the Commonwealth did, but the colonies there wiggled their way into more autonomy. Many people were supportive of the North American revolt, but other than a period of unrest, did not revolt. This would change with the Napoleonic Wars, however, as Britain would put heavy tariffs and taxes on the Brazillian colonies to help fund their war effort. The Brazilian colonies decided enough was enough, and under the leadership of the “White Emperor” James Brooke made a constitution and declared independence. While this was largely on paper, the British knew they wouldn’t be able to win if it came to war. So, they made a deal to begin a peaceful transfer of power, and thus Brazil was granted independence after the Congress of Vienna.

Thus, the Empire of Brazil was founded. It was structured as a bicameral federation under an Emperor, but would have numerous disputes over how powerful the monarchy should be. These internal disputes would define Brazilian politics for decades, and still do to this day. The Emperor is quite vocal regarding his enlightened ideals, while many in the planter class want to simply get rid of him and establish a republic. With tensions regarding slavery and republicanism building up, no one knows what lay next for Brazil.

Other Info
Brief Description of your Economy: Vusaon is somewhat well diversified in its economy, with much of its agricultural power lying in the east, along the Mississippi river and around the West coast. The Pacific Northwest is well known for logging and timber. Mining is also still a lucrative enterprise. Much of the economy of Eastern Vusaon is centered around the Mississippi for trade and agriculture. Shipbuilding, steelworks, and other large scale industries are mostly along the central coast.

Goals: Protect Vusaon, the Sinic peoples in the new world, and expand the realm to bring about the great society and spread its influence.
History: Vusaon traces its history to it's early settlements, the first which settled by Wu explorers in 1531 around the Tsonue (中灣) area. Korea had also had a hand in further settlements, growing to be the second largest colonizer, settling along the Cihlie (级联) coast, with furs and timbers building a wealthy foundation for the new colony to draw from. As both the colonies grew larger, and the Korean colony grew more wealthy, conflict sparked between the two as Wu troops overran the Korean new world by 1655.

Decades after the Wu conquest of the new world, Wu itself became fractured with the last emperor. With Vusaon, distant from any form of centralized power, began it start of independent thought. By 1699, Vusaon chose to break away from the grasp of the city-states during, rallying under Red Hibiscus Society, the leading movement of Vusaon's separatism from Wu's loose control. It would be only 5 years until the city states of Wu came to take Vusaon back. After 7 years of fighting, supported by Spain and others, Wu could no longer keep up the war and Vusaon had it's official recognition with the Treaty of Yanjing.

When Vusaon had become independent of the Wu, previous aristocratic families took hold of regions in which their name was prominent. The central government, under the Red Hibiscus Society (朱槿會 Tsyucinue), poised to reel in the familial rebels, set off to combat them in the north, where they held strongest. For the next decade, they clashed again and again before Vusaon had been completely unified.

Now free from war, Vusaon started to develop itself, spurred by new industrial innovations from Yue. Distant from it's traditional trade partners, self sufficiency was needed to keep the nation stable. With the South Sea Wars, Vusaon saw an increase in immigration from the affected states. Vusaon, far removed from their homeland with very little in the way of rivals, saw it as the safer alternative. With the immigration increase, Vusaon sought more to provide for the new peoples. Eastern expansion was the largest and most popular path to take. Expanding the great civilization as well as the means of self-sufficiency. Vusaon purchased the large swath of territory, the Louisiana Territory, from Spain, increasing the reach of the nation exponentially. With this new access to land and resources, it was their time to exploit it. With populations sent of east, they sought to consolidate their newly gained territory and its wealth to benefit the nation greatly. With the new access of the Atlantic, works have begun on extended rail connections from the capital, all the way to the Mississippi River. Now, Vusaon is led by Zie Yan, descended from one of the noble men who led the original Red Hibiscus Society.
