Freddy was relieved. Glen also didn't want to go out into that fog. Last thing Freddy wanted was to meet up with Nate, who was out in the fog, and could beat Freddy up and leave him lying out there. No, thank you. The other person who went out with Nate could have been anyone. But if Freddy were a betting man, he'd lay money it was a punk thug friend of his who would be like an enforcer, someone to rely in for a definite fight.

Because why else would they be out there?

Logan Ashfield
The Party

Logan started downing the glasses in front of him and before he realized it, he had won. This sweet victory over the girl in front of him would cost him though, as the blurs in his vision were getting more prominent. He then listened to Jessica’s story of her encounter in the woods.

At first, he was smiling at the retelling, thinking of it as a drunk exaggeration, but when the girl mentioned the “wizard”’s tricks with water, Logan became more suspicious. Being able to control water wasn’t as far away from controlling fire, and if that were true, then truly there were others like him, and much closer than he had thought. He downed another glass, before turning towards Jessica, after Nate had left the group.

“Sounds interesting. And as promised, I believe you. Was that wizard from around here?” He asked the question and as he looked around, noticed more people entering the room, crowding the space and the noise becoming much more pronounced around them. He turned back to the girl, as he was putting a yet unlit cigarette in his mouth.

“Would you like to take a walk? We can go outside for a bit.”

"You believe me?" Jessica looked surprised, "I'm not even sure I believe me. I feel like I'm going crazy." She sighed, looking uncharacteristically calm, though it was broken a moment later with a giddy giggle. The alcohol was having the, completely predictable, effect on her.

She gave Logan an appraising look. She couldn't tell if he was planning to tell her something interesting or make a move. The smoking would usually have been quite off-putting, but she was drunk enough not to care at this point... Either option could be fun, "Sure, why not?"

She took a couple of steps towards the door, getting a good look out the window, at the ominously glowing fog bank, in the process... What the hell? That is not normal. "Say, umm, did you spike my drink with mushroom juice or something? Because outside is definitely glowing like a cheesy, 50s-sci-fi, nuclear cloud."

Freddy nodded. There wasn't much to say about how they had gotten their powers, anyway. Freddy knew for a fact he hadn't done anything different. Just go to work, come home, that was about it. No mutant spiders, no radioactive waste, no getting hit by a superhero's mystery beam. Just normal stuff.

So Freddy and the other guys went downstairs, finally. When they came down, there was what looked like a drinking game just ending up with a few people, some he recognized. Jessica was like him. A townie, only a year or so older. While he knew her, he was pretty sure she wasn't that into hanging out with him. Freddy cast his gaze down at the ground, sorry for himself.

There was another she had been interacting with, one Freddy recognized as an outsider. He became a little wary, not knowing what to say. But when he heard Jessica talking about the weird cloud, Freddy knew some had seen it.

The sound of live music was coming from another room. Freddy excused himself from Glen and Stephen, and went to check it out. In a parlor, was a girl who looked strangely familiar playing the piano, and a guy he didn't recognize playing a guitar. Interesting stuff.

Freddy waited until they were done, clapped with the rest, and said to them, "That song was awesome! Even on a night where there's a weird cloud outside, live music always helps!"

As they came downstairs Stephen was relieved, he would be able to not think about superpowers that they apparently had, he gone for the kitchen yet again and soon came back with a glass in his hand and returned to Glen "So, do we tell everyone now? Or maybe we try to organize a party game, not sure how well would both go"

Mark, The Party

Mark looked up at the three folks coming downstairs and their apparent leader mentioning something weird going on outside. Mark stuck his head outside and saw nothing out of the ordinary. Looking at the three, he said "You sure you guys are all right? It looks pretty normal to me."

Another vaycay boy piped up and likewise said "Yeah, I think you guys hit some weird shit up there. It's a normal night dudes."

Nate, the Woods

Stepping past the foggy boundary, Nate found himself in a changed woodlands. The pine forests of Maine were ordinarily dark and silent, but now they had been apparently brought to life. A soft glow, similar to the one emanating from the fog, filled the forest. The fog itself seemed to form a wall on the edge of the woods, while within the woodlands themselves it hovered at around Nate's shin. A faint, calming hum seemed to fill the air, though at the same time Nate couldn't tell if it was an actual sound or just a feeling he was getting. Jackie seemed just as confused as Nate did. Looking in all directions, Jackie exclaimed softly "Well... that's weird... even with context."

Nate shivered a bit, noticing a sudden temperature drop in this strange place. His breath came out as fog and glowed like the rest of it around him. He nodded in agreement with Jackie. "Yeah... I don't like it either. Let's just find Greg and get the fuck out of here." Nate suddenly looked up as several loud noises that sounded like... stone grinding, roared out of the woods. Nate raised a finger to his lips and slowly began to move towards the noises.

Glen looked a bit alarmed they could not see the fog glowing, after a few moments he assumed that it might have something to do with their strange abilities. He made quick eye contact with his two upstairs companions before saying "By weird I meant like a big ass moose was walking by, i've never seen one this close to a house. You didn't see it?"

Downstairs at the party, in the doorway of the music room
Freddy Allen

He couldn't believe it. They didn't see the fog? It had been right there! They saw it out the upstairs window! But the others didn't see it. And glancing out the front door, it kind of looked like the blue fog wasn't as thick here anymore.

To make matters worse, he, Glen and Stephen were now put on the spot. The worst place in Freddy's mind to be - at a party, with others in a big group all singling him out. Didn't help that the people saying it were vaycays, who tended to look down on townies like himself.

When Glen glanced his way and started talking about an imaginary moose to get suspicion thrown off them, Freddy froze. He didn't want to lie. He had seen the fog. All three of them had! And he definitely had not seen a moose.

Freddy looked around at all the faces looking at them, some sneering, others puzzled and confused. He hated the unwanted attention. "Forget it," he said. Grabbing his half-empty Mountain Dew, Freddy walked past everyone and went out the door. A little fresh air and alone time would help. Even if it meant going through weird blue fog to get it. He would rather be out there by himself then with people like that.

So he also headed off to the forest, telling himself that he wasn't going to go too far. And yet he kept walking.

Glen hurried out the door following him and saying in a loud whisper "Freddy! wait up we don't know what the deal is... it could be dangerous!"

Jessica Bishop: chasing after Freddy

A lot of people seemed to be going outside. Maybe the fog was hypnotic or something? As far as Jessica was concerned there was no good reason to go running out there... Then she saw Freddy, the boy who worked at the store decide to go wandering out and that logic flew out the window.

He was nice, a bit shy and awkward, but that wasn't always a bad thing. He was also younger than her and as such she felt a bit of responsibility, the same way she had in the woods earlier in the day. Nerves steeled by more-than-a-little alcohol, she darted after, "Freddy!" she hissed, her eyes darting about nervously, "Have you seen 'The Mist'? This is exactly like 'The Mist'... and I'm the kind of person who the alien decides to eat first in the horror movie. You know, the nameless first victim before they even introduce the characters."

"Come back inside?" she suggested, "That way neither of us gets eaten by an extradimensional spider or impaled by Jason Voorhees. I can definitely improve your Mountain Dew," she wheedled.

Outside, walking towards the woods
Freddy Allen

Sometimes, the way people acted was just too much. He never liked being put on the spot - and especially not when other people were picking on him. He had had enough of that growing up. Being the fat kid didn't help. Always picked last for gym. Always the last to finish running the mile. Never had a girl interested in him. And all of that was in the past, Freddy knew. You take the cards you're dealt with and make the best of what you can with it. That didn't make him feel any better, though.

That's why he ran out of the house. Better to be near a weird blue fog than with people like that. Other than like Glen and Stephen - those guys seemed ok. Some of the other townies, perhaps. But with those punks? And those uppity brats staying for the summer? Forget them. Freddy would rather be alone.

But some people were coming up behind him. One he had just been talking to.

Freddy turned around, trying to keep his voice steady and his eyes from tears. It would be just like him to cry because of the stupid things people say. But he wasn't about to lose face here.

"Hey, Glen. Um... hi, Jessica." (Of course a girl would be one of them who chased after him! As if he was great at talking to girls!) "I'm sorry for running out like that, Glen. I just... I just thought I needed to be alone.

"As for this weird blue fog? Yeah, it's not... right. Or normal. And thanks for your offer, Jessica. I'm fine with what I have. It's just that being out here right now is better than being in there with everyone. You guys can go back if you want."

Freddy turned away. But he didn't start walking back, just in case one of the others might reach out again...

"I'm not going back in without you," Jessica took a couple of quick paces, moving around to stand in front of Freddy, "Seriously, is it so bad in there you'd risk getting eaten by an alien spider rather than hang out with the rest of us?"

"You know," she reached out, laying a hand lightly on his shoulder, "People don't like me that much. Something about being 'loud', 'rude' and 'annoying'," she rolled her eyes as if to say they all seemed like perfectly reasonable things to be in her books, "So you can come and get wasted with me and -" she paused, looking over at Glen, "-Glen right? Everyone else can sneer and bitch, but it doesn't matter because we'll be having fun."

She pursed her lips, glancing around at the fog, "Or we can go explore this buffet restaurant for weird fog monsters. Totally your choice, but I will be very upset of something eats me!"

Nate

This night continued to get weirder. Pushing a bit further into the woods made them appear even stranger than when he and Jackie had first entered. Strange lights seemed to flit around without source, the trees seemed to grow taller and wilder and still the utter silence penetrated the air. Except for those strange grinding sounds. Coming over a slight ridge, Nate made sure he could still see the treeline before looking what lay over the small hill.

Beyond the crest of the ridge the land dipped down into a rough bowl shape, with a large clearing in the center. The clearing once might have held a meadow or even just a field. Now, however, huge jagged rocks were torn up across it. The dirt roiled like a boiling pot, as though the Earth itself was angry. At the center of it stood a figure. Nate squinted, recognizing the figure now. Gregor rose from the earth like some kind of ancient god. His pupil's glowed the same pale blue as the fog, he was up to his waste in a shell of fluidly moving dirt, and two horns of stone had sprouted from his temple. Nate listened over the grinding sounds and he could hear the other boy yelling things.

"MOTHER, MOTHER I CAN HEAR YOU. YOUR VOICES CALLS OVER THE GREAT ROAR. MOTHER ANSWER ME PLEASE, DO NOT LEAVE ME IN THE DARK STILL. I WILL BRING YOU OTHERS, OTHERS TO SERVE! PLEASE ANSWER MOTHER!"

Nate slid back below the ridge and said "I don't know what's going on here, but it isn't good. Something out here has made him crazy."

Jackie nodded. This was already crazy. Now, insane might be a better word for what Gregor had become. Nate opened his mouth to speak again, but a new noise interrupted him. It was the lowest of audible hums. Like the beat of an EDM track it approached from the direction of the military base. Nate looked over the ridge, and saw, just barely illuminated by the light, a small, black aircraft, skimming just over the canopy. It paused before it reached the clearing, hovering in place, before some shapes dropped out of it. Out of the woods from underneath it, a strange assortment of men approached Gregor. They wore suits, like the fathers of Vaycays who just arrived for a weekend off. And on top of that, they carried guns. Armed people weren't anything new for Nate, but these werent ordinary guns. They were larger than the typical rifle Nate had seen, and where made of the same strange matte black material as the aircraft. The men in suits dispersed around the edges of the clearing, Gregor not noticing any of them as they did so. Once they seemed satisfied, an apparent leader among the strange group adressed the boy in the clearing. "ALL RIGHT SON, WE HAVE YOU SURROUNDED. PUT YOUR HANDS UP, STOP SHIFTING THE EARTH, AND WE'LL FIX YOU UP AND SEND YOU ON YOUR WAY. THIS IS YOUR ONE CHANCE TO SURRENDER!"

Stephen Clark

After Freddy and Glen left into the fog Stephen decided to stay right where he was, no, it wasn't that he didn't like Freddy or Glen, but, because of the fog, as he turned to the people Glen was talking with and said "Hm, seems it cleared up" which was a lie, but, he didn't feel bad for It, too used to telling them to other Vaycays, anyway, he found himself in the position of not knowing what to do he decided to sit somewhere, this somewhere happened to be next a window. Stephen then amused himself with his newfound power by thinking of something and projecting a small image of it, fortunately, no one was around him to see it, when an aircraft flew from the direction of the base and looked like it landed somewhere in the woods, Stephen, although seeing weirder things tonight, decided to check it just out of the curiosity of the question that popped in his mind "I thought they didn't fly anymore, wonder why did it land in the woods?". He got outside and walked over to Glen, Freddy and a girl he didn't knew the name of "You saw that plane there? Anyone up for seeing why it landed in the woods?"

"Not everyone can see the glow?" Jessica blanched. In the corner of her mind she knew something wasn't right with her, she was doing a fantastic job at rationalising away the fact that she was a budding telekineticist, but a dark corner of her mind knew some of the strange stuff she had observed was due to her. If she could see things others couldn't it made her different, and she didn't want to be different. She tried so hard to be accepted by the other 'Townies'...

"Yes, my week has been bizarre, but there is nothing special about me," she protested, "I'm just Jessica Bishop... Though I did meet a hobo wizard who did some crazy stuff with water. I actually brought him along tonight."She looked between everyone then shrugged, a little defensively, "Every special person needs someone to help them deal with the crap around them... I thought maybe I could help be awesome, but now he's part of friggin' symphony orchestra in the lounge."

"... Oh and what plane?" She asked, finally. Jessica was drunk had been too preoccupied to notice the plane overhead...

I thought maybe I could help be awesome, but now he's part of friggin' symphony orchestra in the lounge."

"... Oh and what plane?" She asked, finally. Jessica was drunk had been too preoccupied to notice the plane overhead...

"...Hobo Wizard?" Glen said staring at her in disbelief "There is a lot to unpack in that..."

Jessica smiled brightly, "I know! Even I haven't got my head around it and I was there! I thought he was trying to abduct some other girl in the woods, which turned out not to be right, and he only seems to do sign language which makes it kinda awkward to communicate."

She missed out the bit where he could actually speak but seemed to prefer not to for some reason. That was getting way too complicated, "Anyway, he started doing some weird magic tricks with droplets of water, making them hover in the air and stuff. It was all a bit... Not normal."

As she trailed off her previous nervousness seemed to reassert itself, "So I kinda want to know what bizarre stuff happened to you guys, but I'm also kinda worried we're standing in a patch of fog that not everyone can see. That makes it double creepy. It's like we've been specifically blindfolded. If there are horrible things out here, they can probably see just fine. Pick us off one-by-one while we stumbled around wondering what's going on. And like I said before: I'm the one who gets killed first in these movies!"

Outside in the fog
Freddy Allen

He was astonished. Astonished that anyone would reach out to him like this, but she had. When Jessica stood in front of him, Freddy was both embarrassed, thankful, and perhaps a little emotional. He mumbled, "Thank you for caring."

But when the jet flew and landed a little further in the woods, Freddy was bewildered! "Why is there a jet landing in the woods? I'm starting to agree with Jessica. This is really creepy."

Stephen came and wanted to check it out. Freddy wouldn't want to at all, but he also didn't want Stephen going by himself. So when Glen started asking Jessica about whether she had a weird week and she had, AND there was a guy who also could do unnatural things with water?

"Jessica, I had a weird week. So did these guys. Weird enough that this blue fog and that jet landing in the woods fits right in. Something is going on, and I got a bad feeling we're all connected to it. Along with this fog, that jet, and whatever reason it's even landing in the woods up ahead?"

Gulping, Freddy told her everything that had happened to him that morning. How he had woken up looking like a stronger, athletic, trim guy with strange goldish-gray skin tints, sharper fingernails, and what looked like the flu. And how he had changed back. And had done it two other times.

Finally consigned to his fate, Freddy said, "I don't want to go into the woods. But if Stephen's going to go, I don't want him to go alone. I'm going to go with him if he goes. And it wouldn't bother me at all if we all went as a group."

Stephen Clark

I have a feeling he will need to do this many times more, Stephen thought to himself, he then sighed and said to Jessica "Okay so, long story short, somethin' happened and I discovered I can do this" he then projected the picture of a sunny day just before Jessica. He then turned to Freddy and smiled "Thanks" he said to Freddy.

"Okay I guess youre just putting it out there then" Glen said surprised yet again, "Look we have A LOT going on right now to figure out, I don't think we need to add to our problems by running into the woods at night or by going after strange planes. I do think however we should get every we KNOW is affected together in one place to privately discuss things in a safe space... including the water wizard guy, comparing notes to find commonalities is the first step to get to the bottom of what exactly is happening."

"You know, Freddy, you're allowed to say 'I'd like it if you all came with me' rather than you don't mind. It'd only make me feel more wanted, which comes with no negatives," Jessica smiled again, giggling slightly. She seemed to be taking everything remarkably well. The alcohol probably had something to do with it.

"So Freddy turns into a werelion or something and you -" she waved at Stephen, "-can make pretty pictures on the floor? It's a power though 'super' might be overstating it a bit.. ooh actually, can you do Izzy Jackson making out with some totally mental outsider type? I'll take a photo on my phone..."

"Okay." Jessica sounded like she had been suddenly deflated, "I'll go and ask him to come out. Don't worry, I won't mention your secret."
