The Mystery of the Doyle Relay

Initially discovered by the crew of the Alliance exploratory vessel Francis Drake in late 2167, the relay was noted to be active and ready for transmitting vessels through space. Following orders, however, the vessel returned to Alliance space without exploring the relay further. It was noted by Captain Anastasia Vassalloglou in the Drake's observational logs to emit an orange-yellow light instead of standard Relay blue, it's exterior lighting across the Relay is red instead of the normal blue, and it's 30% larger than normal Relays. It was also noted that it's direction points to no star system and sits at the edge of the Galaxy, pointed towards the Whirlpool Galaxy, approximately 30,000,000 lightyears away. Numerous pictures and video were taken by members of the crew before leaving the Relay. Those pictures and video were secured by Alliance Intelligence Command officers.
In 2173, the next time the Pelagius System was encountered by the Systems Alliance, the relay was noted to be deactivated, completely shut down and unusable unless restarted. Until this point, the only inactive relays were previously unencountered relays. To see one having been deactivated recently was an astonishing discovery, and led to the construction of Alliance Research Station Oceanus.

Since its completion in early 2166, Oceanus has seen to the study and observation of the Doyle Relay, named for the British mystery author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Currently, it's connections are unknown.

The Reaper War saw to the evacuation of the Oceanus' crew and the deactivation of the station, stripping out most of it's functional circuitry and machinery aside from the exterior cameras in the hopes that the station would be bypassed by the Reapers. When the Station was reactivated in late 2189, the exterior cameras caught an unusual encounter: the relay had been reactivated by the Reapers. For fifteen minutes, the Relay was surrounded by numerous Reaper capital ships, interfacing with it's internal systems before passing through the Relay. Two minutes after the Reapers entered, the Relay shut down. Ever since, Doctor Stewart and the Research Division of Oceanus Station has interfaced with the Relay three times in an attempt to reactivate it. No attempts had been successful. Now, the Systems Alliance has allowed a small team of scientists from the fledgling, semi-autonomous nation-state of the Martian Congressional Republic to assist Alliance science teams in unlocking the secrets that this mysterious Relay is hiding...

Doctor Stewart set his tray down onto the spartan white table, far apart from the various other staff that took their lunch breaks. He preferred only the company of his fellow co-workers that he had become accustomed to down on Deck Six. For nearly eight months, he had grown close to the other researchers, including Doctor D'rasava who'd been sent by the University of Serrice on Thessia. He had grown close to her through their ten hour workdays in close proximity, studying the internal workings of the Doyle Relay, correlating exterior features to it's smaller brethren. She had already been betrothed to another, but that didn't stop Doctor Stewart's advances. The man had only been 36, in better shape than he'd been in a long time, and single. She was always nice about it, though. Let him down gently, sometimes even humored him, but never allowed him to get his hopes up too much. The asari was 697 years old, had numerous children and lived more than enough lifetimes to spoil it with a few years dating a short-lived human. His thoughts retracted their grip over his mind as he starred into his pan-fried steak and steamed broccoli, pushing it over on top of itself with his fork.

"Doctor Stewart! Hey!" Chris's eyes darted up to see the dark complexioned young assistant walk up.

Goddammit, not Matt." Stewart said within the confines of his mind, letting out a light, unheard, sigh. Matthew Baker. New transfer from some underground science facility on a backwater called Xawin. A 24 year old, high-hoped, optimistic, pain in Stewart's ass. Don't get it wrong, Stewart liked the kid, in a I'm going to beat you with your own data-pad if you ask me another question way. He knew the boy was just curious about the work being done here, and Matt was full of potential, but this was why he gave up his job at the University of Cambridge back on Earth before the war. He grew tired of spoon-feeding children who only wanted the credit for the class and not the actual knowledge that came with it. Giving answers to questions that would be forgotten minutes after they left the class. He knew better than to think Matt was one of those, but Stewart was tired of it all the same.

"Is it alright if i sit with you? Wanted to run some things by you, things I heard from friends that work on Deck One." He said, tray in hand, an eager, disgusting smile upon his face.

"Things? Things like what?" Stewart said as he motioned for the kid to sit down across from him as he spooned a bite of steak into his mouth.

"Well, my friend on the command deck said that he heard the Commander talk about Martians coming to help us. You know, with the project!" Matt said as he took a bite of a greasy cheeseburger. Stewart couldn't decide which was more disturbing. The fact that he had to note that Martians were coming, like they were now their own separate entity that demanded individual demonyms or that this station offered cheeseburgers to their employees.

Stewart sighed, setting down his fork.

"The illustrious Commander Hawkins believe bringing in some duster heads will solve all of our problems? I don't see what they can offer that we haven't already had pass through this station ten times over."

"I guess anything helps, right?" he said as he sat the cheeseburger down and wiped his mouth and hands with a paper napkin.

The station intercom buzzed above the Cafeteria.

"This is Commander Hawkins. Doctor Stewart, please report to Deck Eight. Doctor Hawkins, report to the Flight Deck."

"They must be here." Said Matt as his eyes filled with wonder.

"Would it be alright if I came with you, Doctor?"

"No. Get back to the science deck, tell the others to clean up their stations and get ready for visitors. I'll be there shortly." He said as he got up with his tray, dumping it's contents into a nearby recycling vat and placed the tray on a nearby collection station and made his way to the Flight Deck.

The elevator doors swished open, revealing Doctor Stewart, scanning through his Omni-tool, sifting through the roster report on the Martian scientific entourage that prepared to dock with Oceanus. He learned how to deduce important information from filler info and learned what he needed to about this Doctor Evans and her team. Stewart walked down the long hallway that led to the Flight Deck. The pair of doors hissed open vertically, revealing a host of technicians, landing signal officers, and support staff. On the far side of the hangar, sparks flew from the tail engines of one of Kodiak's rear thrusters as welders repaired them from their last flight, standard wear and tear that was familiar to all UT-47A Kodiaks.

"All signals, prepare for shuttle receiving. All non-critical crew to evacuate. All signals, prepare for receiving." Spoke a young man's deep voice over the intercom system of the Flight Deck from the Flight Control Station on the Bridge. Stewart deactivated his Omni-tool and stood by the doorway, staying clear of the shuttle that was inbound.

"Enjoying the view, Doctor? You almost never come down here." The familiar voice belonged to Lieutenant-Commander Whitly, executive officer of the station and an associate of Doctor Stewart.

"Aside from my lab, the cafeteria and sometimes my cabin, I've barely seen the rest of the station. I didn't come here to sight-see, I came here to figure out this damned relay, and I've barely managed to figure that out. I'm assuming you didn't like the speed of my team's progress so that's why your 'all-knowing' commander called in the Martians?" Said Christopher as he turned to face the Lieutenant-Commander, who was dressed in the standard Alliance Navy officer uniform, two black stripes on his shoulder pauldrons and two golden rings on his cuffs.

"This came down from the top. Completely politically motivated. Apparently the majority in Parliament back the Martian autonomous movement, going so far as to approving a Martian mission to this station to assist us in completing the objective." Said Whitly as he placed his hands behind his back and stood shoulder to shoulder with the scientist, watching as the running lights that denoted a landing pad lit up.

"Ah, politics. Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly, and applying the wrong remedies. Never was there said any truer words from Mr. Marx. If Parliament is onboard with their answer to the Martian Question, can the same be said for the Military?"

Commander Whitly looked over to the Doctor with admiration.

"Your memory of quotes in inspirational, Doctor. And no, from what my friends in the Navy have said, this is not ideal at all. Giving Mars the slightest hint of independence has sparked all kinds of Questions. Now there's the Titanian Question, the Elysian Question, Tiptreean Question, all kinds of questions that the Majority will most likely say yes to. Soon, the Alliance will be amount to nothing more than human nation-states and scuttlebutt says that terrifies the Military." Spoke Whitly as the new Persephone-Class Dropship entered the blue atmospheric barrier that separated the void from the oxygenated hangar. Painted the orange, red and white of the Martian Republic, the ship was assisted in by two signals officers on both sides of the ship, their Omni-tools flashing bright pulses of white and red light as they maneuvered the Dropship onto the landing pad.

"Well, there's our guests. Let's introduce ourselves." Said Doctor Stewart as he began his walk to the edge of the landing pad, Lieutenant-Commander Whitly in tow.

The Milky Way/The Galactic Rim/Pelagius System

“Doctor Evens” captain Mallory called before she could broad the Dropship. She turned around to see captain mallory standing with 2 Martian marines out of the 50 currently on broad “you and your colleagues are to important too the Republic to lose you will all be issued a sidearm for your protection should hostilities arise and these 2” she said moving her head to indicate the marians “will be going with you to make sure no overzealous alliance recruit tries to cut your necks as you sleep” “are you sure thats needed captain” said the raven haired doctor “yes” said mallory “the chief scientist of the alliance you will be working with has been flagged by ONI as anti-Martian” replied the captain “ONI has also gathered information that this station has alliance military personnel that think Elysium and Titan are next on our list of demands” “what” said a laughing doctor Evens “they think that we are going to demand titan a world that is barely at the beginning of it’s Terraforming project and has what one hab dome and the volus are constantly trying to steal it because it happens to be perfect for them and Elysium is near Illium witch would probably be pissed because mars wouldn’t allow an asari Corporatocracy to influence Martian politics. Anyways the entire reason the Republic exists is because we are technically a subspecies of humanity and our culture has radically diverged from the alliances culture. And all those planets have been settled for what 10 years at the least they haven’t developed there own culture and probably won’t” Evens ranted. Doctor Evens noticed her rant and said sheepishly with an embarrassed look on her face “sorry captain I tend to go on rants when I get angry”. “Yes I read that in your file Miss Evens” said the captain with an almost emotionless face that had a slight grin. “now get to the dropship before it leaves” the captain said well turning around and starting the walk that would take her back to the bridge. Just as the captain Boarded the elevator a message appeared on Dr Evens Omni tool it was a list composed by ONI of potential instigators. Doctor Evens still embarrassed by her rant in front of the hanger crew walked to the Persephone Class dropship and entered fallowed closely by the 2 Martian marines. After she had boarded the dropship it began its take off with the low hum of the element zero field as the backdrop of her colleagues and there conversations she started to read the list going over the names and profiles of the people on it. Before she even knew it the transport had landed in the research stations Hanger the drop-ship opened to see the organized Madness of any flight deck in the entire galaxy. In front of the dropship stood 2 people both of whom Where on the list provided by ONI they Where Executive Officer Malcolm Whitley and Chief Scientist Christopher Stewart. Putting on the best smile she could muster in company such as them she said “Permission to come aboard Lieutenant Commander”

The Milky Way/The Galactic Rim/Pelagius System/MCRN Pride of Phobos/Command Deck

“Commander Adams” said captain Mallory. Walking towards the marine looking out at the station “yes” he responded “make sure that your marines are ready for combat if something goes wrong” the captain said “they already are” responded the marine looking out into the the great Void surrounding the station.

"Permission granted, Doctor Evans. Welcome to Oceanus." Said Lieutenant-Commander Whitly with a warm smile. Doctor Evans stepped off of the transport, face to face with Doctor Stewart, who put on the best smile he could, but his disdain for the Martians shined through, no matter how hard he tried to put it away. "Welcome, Doctor. My name is Doctor Christopher Stewart, but I'm sure you already knew that.

Staff Commander Hawkins breathed heavily as she kept her continued sprinting pace on the treadmill. Wearing blue and white workout wear with the Alliance symbol on her chest. Her red hair tied tightly into a knot on her head. Her morning had been uneventful and so far, it had been even more boring than yesterday. She'd made it a habit of hitting Security's gym daily, including cardio and weight lifting. It was the best part of her day.

Her omni-tool beeped loudly as her forearm lit up with the standard omni-tool interface. An incoming message from traffic control on the Bridge. She slowed her pace on the track to catch her breath and pressed the "ACCEPT CALL" button.

"Go for Hawkins." She said between breaths.

"Sorry to bother you, Commander, but you wanted me to inform you when the Martian entourage arrived? Well, they're here, ma'am."

"Ah......alright....I'll be there in a sec." She said as she caught her breath, turning the treadmill off.

"Time to get dressed." She said as she headed to the Captain's Nest to change into her Navy uniform and meet with the Martians on Science Deck.

Isabel noticed the thin mask over the face of doctor Stewart that poorly obscured his hatred but now was not the time to show any emotions that could in any way satisfy some perverted desire on his part to annoy her. So she asked the lieutenant commander who was obviously the more rational of the two at least for right now “so lieutenanit I assume that you and doctor Stewart are here to show us the way to the science deck”

Lieutenant-Commander Whitly moved to the side and rose his hand in an inviting manner. "After you, ma'am. Go straight through that door and there's the elevator." He said kindly. She would be followed by any scientific crew she had with her. The rest, such as the pilot and ship crew would remain behind to coordinate with the station's Flight Deck crew on either putting the ship into drydock or sending her on her way back to the Martian ship hovering outside Oceanus.

As the three began to walk, Doctor Stewart chimed in.

"Doctor Evans, how much do you know about the Doyle Relay? If we are to be working together, I need to know how much you know about the current topic. We all need to be on the same page because I feel we are getting close to a breakthrough on reactivating the Relay."

Deck I: Command

Staff Commander Hawkins was now fully dressed and presentable. She would head down to the Science deck to meet the new Martian additions to the Oceanus.

"Well, good. It would appear that Doctor Evans isn't blind." Doctor Stewart said sarcastically. Whitly gave Stewart a condemning look, implying that he wanted Stewart to halt his current mood. The good doctor nodded slightly and moved to address Evans' question.

"There's only been one time that the Alliance allowed us to use Reaper technology on this Relay and we spent most of that time sitting in a chair being interrogated and brain-scanned for three hours. When we were finally allowed to proceed with our objective of interfacing with the Relay's systems using said Reaper technology, the relay completely shut down for five hours. We've compared normal Relay interfaces to the Doyle's and they are completely different. Scans showed us that in the presence of Reaper technology, it activates certain defensive mechanisms, such as shutting down. You see, when the Reapers interacted with other relays like the Charon, the Relays behave, do as they're told. But not this one."

The Elevator came to a gentle halt, it's doors sliding open, revealing a tall, stiff redheaded woman in her fresh starched Alliance Navy officer's uniform, though missing the cap.

"Greetings, Doctor Evans. My name is Staff Commander Alisha Hawkins, Commanding Officer of the Oceanus. I see you've already been introduced to my XO and Chief Scientist Stewart. Welcome." She said, extending a hand out as the trio stepped out of the elevator.

After a few seconds of thinking over the possibility’s that were left with the revelation that the Realy didn’t respond to reaper technology Evens grabbed Hawkins hand and Shook it saying “hello my name is Dr Isabella Evens” only noticing afterwards that Hawkins had said her last name just before she introduced herself. “Sorry I wasn’t paying attention I was going over some information that was I just told”she said with a sheepish smile

Staff Commander Hawkins smiled a waved her hand, waving off the apology. "Of course, Doctor. No need to apologize. I'm sure you're ready to get to work? Welcome to the Science Deck, this is where the station's brightest minds work on cracking the mystery of the Doyle Relay. Aside from the normal staff, we also have three guests. Doctors Punok Roraji and Eboln Maemini of the Salarian Union, two of the Union's greatest scientists that were instrumental in spearheading efforts to reverse engineer Reaper technology during the war." The two could be seen from the elevator, through a series of windows, discussing amongst themselves over a spherical device, green and blue lights blinking on it's side, some new instrument the two had been working on.

The Martians and staff exited the elevator, walking through the long hallway, three doors on each side. Each door led to a different testing room, complete with all manners of equipment for any scenario. Each door had a small window to the side of them that allowed monitoring from the outside, a stenciled number on the bottom of the glass that marked which room they were in. As they walked through the hallway, the two steel doors, painted white with blue stripes, slid open, revealing a large open room, three tables complete with chairs and terminals were present in the middle, all connected to the Alliance's secure data network. On both sides of the room were straight stairways leading to a second floor with briefing rooms, restrooms, and secured rooms where analysis of data and materials could be accomplished.

"So you're the Martian?" Said a female voice from the side as they walked in. The voice was young, a very thick heightened received pronunciation in her voice, something out of an old drama series from the U.K. nearly a century ago.

"Ah, yes. And this is Doctor Ranixna D'rasava of the Asari Republics." Said Commander Hawkins.

"Yes, yes, received my Doctorate in Astrophysics from the University of Serrice, my Doctorate of Astrobiology from the Martial Institute of Cipritine and my Masters of Science in Engineering from the University of California at Riverside. And before you ask, yes, my adopted parents were human and I spent my first forty birthdays living in the cramped luxury suburbs of London then my next twenty in New Britannia on Mars, which is why I've adopted this accent that seems so out of place for an Asari. If you were to ask me, no, I don't regret growing up with humans because they gave me more than my biological pair ever could. The only reason I had been dispatched her by the Asari Republics and not by the Alliance was because my knowledge and expertise on the subject was desperately needed and the Republics didn't have another Liara T'Soni present, or would it be Shepard now?" She approached the team, fixing the collar on her white with Alliance blue accents laboratory coat and reached out to shake Doctor Evans' hand.

Evens looked the Asari in the eyes while at same time reminding herself that the Asari had to meld with someone to read their mind. pushing back the fears she Had from reading the stories written by the survivors of Asari custody from the first contact war in 9th grade she accepted the handshake and noted to herself to see if ONI had any information on her of course knowing them they probably did. She finally after a few odd seconds of silence introduced herself “yes I am a Martian and my name is doctor Isabella Evens” looking back to the commander and doing everything she could to not get into an uncomfortable situation she quickly said “now that we all know each other can I have any data that I don’t already have I would like to see what’s already been done before our arrival”

The brief silence was interrupted by Staff Commander Hawkins as she pondered what the Asari's intentions were towards the Martian team, not that it mattered to her, seeing as though her only responsibility was to the safe and secure operation of an Alliance facility, not maintain watch over who inside of it does what. That was Commander Whitly's responsibility. "Well, with that, I'll let you all get to work. Again, it's good to have you here, Doctor Evens." And with that said, the Staff Commander pushed through the crowd and made her way to the elevator, Commander Whitly following close behind. Doctor Stewart walked forward, passing by Doctors Evens and D'rasava. "Follow me, Doctor Evens." Stewart said as he walked up to one of the many terminals and input his username and passcode to gain entry into Oceanus' Science Archives. "This is all the data we've compiled from the Doyle Relay. As you can see, we've recorded higher energy output from this Relay than the others, even while it's shut down. From what we've gathered, this Relay operates on a different energy source than the Reaper made Relays. After the Relays were destroyed and being rebuilt, we gathered much information about what those Relays were made of and created a chart detailing the levels of elements used in their creation. With all relays, there are the same patterns. High concentrations of zinc, titanium, tungsten, common elements in the Galaxy." Doctor Stewart pulled up the graphs detailing what the Relays were made with, six lines rising up in a uniform pattern, each line getting longer.

"Then we have the Doyle Relay." He said as he pulled up the Relay's elemental base. Unlike the uniform appearance of the common galactic relays, this one was all over the place. Low levels of titanium, high levels of zinc, very high levels of Astatine as well as astronomical levels of Element Zero forged right into it's panels.

"We haven't been able to explain it, but we have many theories. One being that since this Relay doesn't lead to any other relays or star systems, we believe this Relay is built for extra-galactic transportation." The room fell silent for a moment before Stewart spoke once more.

"Listen very closely to this next part, ladies and gentlemen. For fear of panic, this can never leave this room and none of us are allowed to speak about this to anyone outside of the Science staff, not Hawkins, not Whitly. If this relay does lead to another Galaxy, then this footage proves something that could cause unrest at the galactic level."

With a few pushes of Stewart's fingers on the holoboard, he pulled up footage of six Capital-Class Reapers surrounding the Doyle Relay.

'This footage was recovered from the station's exterior cameras. We stripped the station to avoid detection from the Reapers and evacuated it. It worked and this is what we found." Said Stewart as he fell back and allowed the Martian team to examine it.

The Doyle Relay was activated in this footage, two Reapers pulled alongside it, seemingly interfacing with it. This continued for twenty seconds before the rings of the Relay began spinning faster and faster, the orange yellow central orb glowing brighter and brighter and in a blink of an eye, all six of the Reapers zoomed through. Over the course of thirty seconds, the Relay rings slowed, the lighting died down and within two minutes, all exterior lighting had flickered and extinguished.

"Our theory is that this Relay transported those Reapers to the Whirlpool Galaxy. If this is the case, the pulse sent out by Commander Shepard may not have affected those Reapers and they may have survived. If the Relay reactivates, Doctor Evens, those Reapers may return. But we don't have any solid answers on this."

Evens watched the video of the reapers with horror in her eyes for right before her was evidence that the greatest threat to not just mars but the entire galaxy Still existed. Recovering from the shock of this revelation evens asked “why haven’t you told the military?”

"It's like I said." Stewart said as he shrugged his shoulders. "We don't have concrete proof of this. A theory is not something I'm approaching the Defense Committee with. Until we can get hard proof, none of this leaves this station. When the relay opens again, if it opens again, I'm taking a shuttle and going through. That's the surest way to get information." Said Stewart.

“You’re insane” evens said shaking her head “but I will respect your authority on this. on one condition request That more ships be deployed here. I don’t care if there Martian or alliance ships that doesn’t matter Right now all that matters is that those lovecraftian Monsters might still exist”

"I don't have the authority to deploy anything, Miss Evens. Even if I could, what would it help? Last time, it took whole fleets to destroy Reaper capitals. It would only-" Doctor Stewart was cut off by a flurry of loud voices from a nearby control station for the monitoring probes.

"Doctor Stewart! I'm picking up activity! The Relay is activating!" Said one of the many human science support personnel.

Exterior cameras appeared on every nearby monitor, showing the Doyle Relay, the lighting panels on the Relay, growing brighter and brighter as the central centrifugal rings began to slowly spin. Without a word, Doctor Stewart ran for the door, already in contact with hangar personnel.

"I want a shuttle running, now! I have security clearance, you bastard! Do as I say or your next posting will be on Titan!" Screamed the Doctor as he entered the elevator and prompted the doors to close right behind him.
