The gods rule over us. They have for many millennia in fact, as long as anybody could remember. Shaping the land, cultivating it, even creating the first humans in order to give this beautiful but lifeless planet some intelligent lifeforms who would worship them. Some think them benevolent and loving parental-figures watching over their children, some think them mostly absent but popping in once in a while to help out the earth, and even more with unfortunate lives see them as immortal, all-powerful dicks playing a giant D&Desque game and using mankind as their pieces. Whatever you think of them or even if you believe in them or not, they're there. But strangely enough, their influence has seemed to dwindle over time as humans learned skills and began to modernize, becoming less dependent upon them. The gods were annoyed by this, but fascinated at what the minds of their creations could do and were actually very enthralled by their developing technology and growing civilizations.
The year is 2019, and the world seems to have reached that level of near-world peace that has eluded their ancestors. While this has had a greatly positive effect on the planet, the gods aren't too happy with it...mainly because they're bored again. And you know what happens when you get bored and concerned gods. Shit starts to hit the fan, and badly.
Fearing that the humans have developed as far as they could possibly go, and not wishing to start a war for fear it would destroy their creations, the gods came together to come up with a seemingly mundane plan to relieve their boredom and perhaps influence the world in a more direct way, play a board game. In this board game however, the board is the planet Earth...and the pieces are people. You are one of those people, created specifically by the gods and infused with a tiny shard of their essence, born to be placed on the game board to see what happens. Of course being infused with a piece of godly essence, you are not a normal human. Normal humans would be boring, so in the words of Taki, god of mischief: "let's give 'em magic, it'll be fun!" Are you a man-beast, infused with the essence of the wild goddess Artia and living with a wild side that comes out every full moon? Perhaps you're warlock, shaped by the twin gods of secrets and magic with a vast array of dark and eldritch spells at your disposal. Maybe you're one of the fae, children of the capricious god of mischief with pointed ears and a penchant for magical pranks. Or even an undead, raised by the Goddess of Death as a way of throwing her own lot into the game. Whether you need to feed on blood and avoid the sun, a zombified corpse maintaining remarkably human intelligence, or a disembodied spirit just floating around, you have her to thank for your existence...or re-existence as it were. Whatever you are, you're here. You're here and you've been thrown into the longest-running fantasy dice role-play game this world has ever seen, god style.
Regardless of your purpose as characters to be moved along, the gods aren't stupid. They know you have free will, and that was their plan. It wouldn't be as much fun to have a mindless puppet of a "character" on the board now would it? They also know how utterly vicious normal humans can be to the things that they don't know and can't comprehend, so they've decided that it's better for you all to band together instead of living apart, otherwise the game could be over before it even began.
Your story begins in the House of Night, a beautiful eleven-bedroom mansion with modern as well as magical conveniences located in the heart of Miami. Why Miami? Because a lot of batshit-crazy things happen in Florida, making this the perfect stage to set the game in. Regardless of where you were born, your plans for your life or even your mentality, you were all suddenly strongly compelled to move to this specific location no matter how hard you tried to fight against it, one of the very few times that the gods will directly influence you (or else you'll figure out that this is a game and may try to fight them). So you're in a probably new location with a lot of new people you don't even know that well, with only the feeling that you can't particularly leave. You will try to go about your life without attracting too much attention from the mundanes, maybe even figure out what the strange yet distant influence you felt watching over you all your life is. Perhaps human attention is what you want, you embrace your powers to the point where you feel superior and wish to rule over everyone. Find love? See the world? Become "normal"? Become more powerful? The choice is mostly up to you. You and your roommates may not know much about the other, all you do know is that you're all different and that you all feel this strange influence seeming to push you along occasionally. Like your life isn't entirely your own. Your ultimate goal is to figure out what that strange influence is, and perhaps even break free of it. The gods won't let that happen (at least not without a hell of a fight), but they will revel in seeing you try.
Let the games begin.
