"Who said I was going to back another candidate?" John asked. "As long as you don't become a thorn in my side, Carrie, you will be fine. But you're far from a thorn currently, we should keep it that way."

"As for my foreign policy, you'll be the first person I call Carrie." John gave a weak smile.

"You sure know how to charm a lady." She laughed, shaking her head. "Come on, you've got to have foreign policy principles of your own. It'd be unprecedented for you to - in theory - give me a wholly free lead on the foreign policy of the United States."

Senator James Moore's Office, Washington D.C

"The problem is the Mayoral election is another two years away and the gubernatorial election isn't for another three. I'm not getting any younger James and I don't want to have to wait for such a long time. But all of them are on the cards currently, I haven't ruled anything out yet. Like I said we currently lack a sensible moderate candidate for the primary, maybe I could be that guy? Why? Are you intending to announce a presidential candidacy?" John smirked.

Moore shakes his head "I thought about it, exploratory committee and all that. I would have done well but I wouldn't have won, and it would have split the more moderate votes, potentially handing the election to the progs..." Moore sighed a bit "Right now I legitimately just want to help the party. Get us back on track.."

Moore refocuses himself on Donaldson, intent to not think about the what ifs of the election "Look if I thought you'd win I would get behind you. But the party is fairly anti-wealth right now, plus you lack traditional credentials, youre a white man, and you've never won an election in your life. That's problematic towards the 'elect-ability' argument"

"I will." She stood up with him, going to shake his hand with a nod before making her farewells and departing. Once she was outside, she got her phone out and punched in a text to Volek's secretary, who she could trust to be discrete and bring it up to Karel for her:

John left his office and headed to the roof of his building to catch a breath of fresh air.

It's all for the plan, John thought as the elevator doors shut.

"My experience? Where to begin... well I suppose it started when I was a young adult back in University, I helped work on the Carter Campaign. It gave me valuable insight into the political landscape. After I finished University I went to Business School in California, I met some really amazing people there, learned a lot there. Morgan Stanley was my next port of call, I did quite a bit of work there, helping manage investments and so before after three years, I was made Partner. While I was a partner, I think I learned a lot about executive positions as put in charge of associates and I was in charge of managing certain investments for some high profile clients. This shows you that I am a person who can be trusted in such a high role and it also shows that I can deal with the stress of an executive position. I then had the initiative to leave Morgan Stanely and found my own business, a hedge fund called Irpac. Within a few years, I grew it and worked very hard. I invested a lot of time, a hell of a lot of time. I was extremely dedicated and I still am. It's now a multi-million dollar company."

John paused for a second.

"Throughout my career, I have shown skills that are transferable from my role as a hedge fund manager to the executive branch of government. I've had a long career, with it mostly being scandal-free, yet again another great position for a potential President to be in." John finished with a chuckle.

Karel summed up what John had said in one sentence. "It seems you're selling yourself as an outsider who'll shake up the system."

He paused before continuing.

"I've got some free advice for you, if you'll take it."

"If you want to give yourself a fighting chance for the nomination, you should bide your time. Right now Whitaker and Little will be taking the oxygen out of the room on the moderate end. But if Whitaker or Little slip up or start sliding in the polls, jump in quickly and make your case. I'd emphasize your work with NationOne, together with the fact that you were interested in politics from a young age- you could pitch yourself as an economic technocrat, so to speak. But if you do want to run for Governor or Mayor, well, others have taken that path. You could be the next (Not-Rockefeller or Not-Bloomberg)."

Everyone would think you would be a spoiler and take away from the democratic candidate, letting the Republicans win with a plurality... again."

"John I could never support you going independent and doing that... Look you should run in the democratic primary, i think you'd be an important voice."

FOX News Interview
Secretary for Homeland Security Tara Misra

Image

Craig Benfield: Now, recently President Wolf invoked a State of the Union address affirming a much stronger pro-Israel stance than previous administrations. This involved many measures, including, among other things the Friedman Act, currently being proposed in Congress by Republican Senator Greg Kost which would involve strong measures taken against the anti-Semitic Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) organisation. Here to talk to me about the situation is Secretary for Homeland Security, Tara Misra. Good Evening, Madam.

Tara Misra: Good Evening, it's a pleasure to be here.

Benfield: Now, to get started, it is currently being speculated that the Friedman Act could face serious challenges from the Democrats, including potential motions to table or filibuster. How would you prepare for such motions?

Misra: Well look, I'm not going to get into speculated motions to lay on the table or filibuster the Friedman Act that haven't even been proposed yet in the Senate. I think it's really important just to recognise right now that what has happened to the late Ambassador Friedman was absolutely appalling and that it warrants the Administration to seek a fundamentally different policy, a new policy, for the purposes of protecting the American alliance with Israel. And part of that policy is the Friedman Act which Senator Kost has already proposed to the Senate; and the Administration will be spending our time making the case to all members of Congress that if they want to show Hamas and other terrorist organisations operating in Israel that America can and will stand up to them, if they want to deter and ultimately avoid this cycle of violence, then this is the best way forward. And in particular by voting for the Friedman Act when it comes to vote, this will bring forward the measures needed against the terrorist sympathising and utterly antisemitic BDS organisation, enabling the Administration to keep America, and particularly the sizable Jewish community in America, safe.

Benfield: Yes, but the Democrats are not saying that they don't want to crack down on Hamas and other terrorist organisations in the area, what they're saying is that they believe that the Friedman Act goes against American Citizens' constitutional right to free speech and expression as it penalises organisations for having certain political affiliations. What I'm asking you is if for that reason the Friedman Act fails to pass Congress, what would be Plan B for the Administration? The vote in the Senate could be happening within the next 48 hours. Secretary for Homeland Security, it is reasonable to ask this question.

Misra: Of course, absolutely, but at the same time I'm not even going to speculate in terms of whether this legislation passes Congress or not because the job of the Administration right now, before the Friedman Act is even voted on by the Senate, is to continue to work with colleagues and to make the case for supporting it. And of course there will be criticism of it, even if we do get the Friedman Act through, there will be criticism in Congress. As of next week, with the President's strategy fully implemented, with his policy fully implemented, that is right and proper and there is a whole process in place. But even to get to that stage, we need to get the Friedman Act through and then start to fully implement the President's new Israel policy, and the process and the steps...

Benfield (interrupting Misra): Yes, but you won't get to that stage if Congress votes down the Friedman Act.

Misra: Well, I'm not even going to be speculating about that because the job of the Administration right now is to focus on getting it through Congress.

Benfield: Okay, Secretary, thank you, that's all we have time for.

Misra: Thank you for having me.

@SimoneNY12

Acting Secretary Misra's interview on FOX News betrays just how unprepared this Administration is to tackle America's issues. It was like Groundhog Day, or Doctor Strange facing Dormammu. Repetitive and uninformative. And all whilst Congress continues to have serious questions about the way she handled the National Terror Advisory System in the wake of Ambassador Friedman's assassination. Questions have to be asked about whether the mechanisms in place to keep us safe have been perverted for political purposes.

Iowa State University, Iowa
Levi Murphy Rally
Feb 16th

"Before I start this afternoon, I would like to thank the campaign supporters in Iowa State University that helped make this happen. When you see the campaign apparatus, people don't usually think of the tens of thousands of volunteers that are behind the massive movements, and the people matter. Although I'm campaigning in my own name, I am campaigning on the behalf of the people that urged me to enter the race and take the progressive, socialist movement forward. So, I thank the young supporters that have gathered here today and I promise to stick to the issues that you all care about, not about the issues spoken about on mainstream media and corporate media.

You cannot have a movement, especially a progressive movement, without the backing of the young people of this country. And you're regularly ignored too - where's the politicians talking about housing affordability, the incoming climate crisis, the poor paying jobs and the weak internet infrastructure in this country? When we think of ideas of the 21st century, they've got to be the ideas that are endorsed by the new generation, a generation that in many ways will surpass my own. I haven't seen such a large mobilization of youth action for generations, and it's about time people took you all seriously, rather than attack you in opinion pieces and over the radio. That's why our campaign are proposing initiatives that, I believe, are very popular among the young people of our country because they're sick and tired of the status quo.

Of course, I hear the opinions of know-it-all, so-called "political analysts" that you cannot run on working class, progressive values in Iowa and win. Well, watch us. These people will be surprised when we turn out to the ballot, both working families and the youth and tell the establishment what's up. You'd actually find that we are united in core goals: Medicare for All, tuition free college and a green revolution. I've visited many counties in Iowa and these messages have been resonating, much to the distaste of some of my more "moderate" opponents. I will never cease to be outspoken on progressive and socialist values and you can count on me to speak candidly and honestly on all topics.

Hence, I have no problem is saying that I support and would enact as President: a green new deal, universal healthcare, tuition free college, ending the wars that waste our budget, a federal jobs guarantee, raising the minimum wage, boosting public transport and reducing fares, instituting a national housing program and passing a Second Bill of Rights. That's not all, however, I also want to break up the banks and other large monopolies, and instead I want to bail out all college and medical expense debt. When it comes down to it, all Democratic candidates should stand for these policies! Unfortunately, we're not all the way there. There needs to be massive work done still to move the Democratic party to the left, on a more populist trajectory.

I can say, with fair certainty, that if our party elects an establishment Democrat hell-bent on "pragmatism and civility", we will lose in 2020. We need a Presidential candidate that can win in Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania. I believe I can be that person, because I want to create a rainbow coalition of young people, working people, Latinx people, the LGBT community, the Black community and the faith community. With that army of people, we can beat the Republican Party, we can beat the neoliberal Democrats and we can beat the political establishment. So please, after this, jump onto Twitch and Twitter where you can find some of my accounts. We live stream all of these town halls on Twitch so you can watch them in real time. And in the corner, over there, is our volunteer sign-up sheet. Drop by over there and show some support for a progressive America. Thank you."

Westra Presidential Campaign Caught Plagiarizing Idaho Senate Candidate

Image
Westra on CBS News

By Tom Deveaux

Democratic Presidential Candidate and Senator from New Jersey Timothy Westra has recently unveiled a series of policy proposals, with many observers noting the sheer number of policies released in such a short time. An AP investigation however has found that some of this policy is very similar and at times identical to the policy platform from Bernard Prarie's 2016 bid for the U.S. Senate seat in Idaho, with Westra's union policy being a word for word repetition of that platform. Westra’s campaign makes no mention of the passages being lifted from Prarie and has given no indication that they are anything but the Senator’s original political thought, leaving open the question of if the move was an intentional move towards embracing the Prarie “revolution”. At one point, the name "Bernie" was even left on the campaign's official website, which reporters noted before the error was fixed by the campaign.

Image

These revelations come as the Democratic race for the White House heats up, with several candidates from Congresswoman Emily Davenport of California to Senator Ben Little of Maryland entering the rapidly growing field of those wanting to be the next Commander-In-Chief.

Prairie, the rural progressive stalwart who captivated the grassroots and built a miniature “revolution” during his longshot 2016 Senate campaign, has spoken out about the unapproved of use of his message, noting that while he was “flattered” to see his message perpetuated through the Westra campaign, he also took issue with another campaign failing to produce an independent message and instead “stealing the words straight from my mouth”.

The Westra campaign has commented, saying "This incident was not intended to be malevolent in any way. Senator Westra holds tremendous respect for Senator Prairie's revolutionary 2016 campaign, and sees it as an example of how grassroots movements should be run. He takes full responsibility for this unfortunate incident, but would like to reinforce the fact that this campaign is all about the very similar ideas that we share as a country."

It remains to be seen what the consequences for this apparent plagiarism will be, but in a chaotic political environment, one must imagine the blowback will be significant.

I join my progressive colleague @EmilyDavenport in being wholly outraged by Senator @WestraNJ 's plagiarism. It's not becoming of a United States Senator, and it's certainly not becoming of a President of the United States. Despite policy differences, I respected Senator Westra. I respect him a little less today.

Tim Westra 2020
Nashua, New Hampshire
February 17th, 2019

Tim had decided to go easy on the big rallies around the country for a bit - he wanted to differentiate himself from Levi Murphy's campaign, which he saw as his closest competitor. Tim's team had decided to lean into the personal connections he could make around New Hampshire, which he saw as his best bet of finishing first in an early state primary. So, they were hosting a potluck lunch for supporters and local residents of Nashua who were interested in his campaign.

This was also coming hot on the heels of his recent plagiarism mishap, for which two few staffers had been fired. Tim wouldn't say that he was extremely worried about it, as he'd seen even President Baharia's running mate recover from pretty serious incidents of plagiarism, but it was embarrassing for him nonetheless.

He milled around the large space he'd reserved here in Greeley Park for his potluck, and spoke with individuals who were in attendance. He spoke with some people about his new plan for a Federal Jobs Guarantee, which was his original plan and the most detailed one out there. He described how revolutionary the idea of implementing a jobs guarantee is, and he explained that he knew exactly how he could pay for one.

He took a bite out of his hamburger before speaking to some of the press folks who were in attendance.

Reporter: "Hi Senator Westra, I just have a few questions, I'm with the Washington Post. You've recently been exposed for plagiarizing a Senate candidate's precise words on union policy, why did you think that was a good idea?"

"Our campaign has appropriately dealt with those who were responsible. I think my comment to the AP stands for itself."

Reporter: "Are you insinuating that others write your policy papers?"

"Well, of course. I have a policy team, to whom I communicate my ideas. But frankly, I think the corporate media jumps at the opportunity to smear progressives, but I think the people of this country are more concerned with how each candidate will impact their lives. That's all I will comment for now, thanks."

Westra ignored the barrage of questions from the reporter and walked back to grab a cup of lemonade. He looked at his phone for a bit, seeing Emily Davenport's swipe at him as well as Carrie Simone's comment. He decided that he was at the point where he could show that he was someone who would pull no punches. If he had to make pointed responses to the establishment, he would.

@EmilyDavenport The American people care more for candidates who have spent their entire career fighting for working families, rather than politicians who hope to satisfy their presidential ambitions by flip-flopping and scoring political points. My apology stands, but the ideas in those proposals are not plagiarized - they're ones that I have believed in my entire life. Can't say the same for you.

@SimoneNY12 Spare working families from your faux outrage, and actually support working people by fighting for them rather than selling out to your NY Wall Street donors. I also think it's "unbecoming" of politicians to be mouthpieces for the military-industrial complex in Congress.

He went back to conversing with the attendees, assuring them that he believed in the Second Amendment and spoke about his support for universal background checks to keep guns out of the hands of people who shouldn't have them. He committed to spending the appropriate trillions to combat climate change, and he said that his Federal Jobs Program would be a key part of climate action.

He walked around a bit more, addressing young people and reassuring them about concerns relating to education. He pointed them to his Student Debt Cancellation plan, which would address existing debt as well as reform the system for future students.

He came out of the potluck with his eyes dead-set on a first place finish in New Hampshire, fueled by his progressivism but more importantly powered by personal events like these.

While concerning and disappointing this scandal can't erase Senator Westra's lifetime of service and consistently fighting for those policy positions. However his attacks against those who a rightly criticizing him are unacceptable. You or your team messed up and got caught, take responsibility, apologize and move on. Don't attack people calling you out when you deserve to be called out.@WestraNJ.

Dear Congressperson,

I am sure you were as shocked as I was when you discovered that American Ambassador Aaron Friedman along with 4 others had been murdered in the most appalling circumstances by terrorists on February 4th. We must not forget that these people had families that loved them and that this act of utter cruelty snatched these people away from their loved ones. As victims of terrorism, these people have paid the ultimate price. We have been confronted with a stark reminder of the evils of terrorism and assasination. Those crimes are a blight on the modern world, and for the sake of Ambassador Friedman and the 4 other victims, we must do all we can to stamp them out.

I would also like to pay tribute to the outstanding professionalism shown by our diplomatic security forces. In particular, to the swift and professional response from them when it came to neutralising both of the attackers through lethal and nonlethal means.

The families of the victims at this incredibly difficult time are in my thoughts and have my full sympathy. Nothing can ever undo the loss that they have suffered. We owe it to them to work with our Israeli partners in punishing anyone who was responsible for this attack. I want to work with those families to ensure that they can bring forward any evidence they might have to solve this appalling crime. With their help we can bring the perpetrators to justice. I would also like to remind you that this is going to be a long and meticulous investigation: it will involve working with partners overseas, with Israeli law enforcement agencies, and unravelling the threat of criminality that could strech halfway across the world.

We are already working with a range of operational partners to piece together information. The Israeli police force will need to be given the time and the space to do just that whilst respecting the dignity of those who died and of course the privacy of their families.

Following the devastating attack, the Department for Homeland Security has taken necessary short-term and long-term measures to ensure that America remains safe. I can confirm that we are also taking further steps towards securing our borders as part of these measures. We must make sure that we stay secure in America after this incident, and the Department for Homeland Security will also now accelerate our joint intelligence lead operation between the Israeli Police, the security services of the American Embassy in Jerusalem, and the CIA in order to disrupt and deter terrorist organisations planning to carry out attacks against American interests in the middle east.

Last week's tragedy was the culmination of a rise of anti-Semitism and terrorist activities. Terrorism is one of the most pressing issues for the United States, but also for all our international partners. Anti-Semitism fuels terrorism, it erodes the safety of the 10 million jews that are American citizens, but most importantly it endangers the lives of American diplomatic staff. Many - if not most - anti-Semitic organisations have been shown to act in concert with terrorists and the motivations that lead people into having anti-Semitic thoughts are also broad and complex. It is often the most vunerable people that are recruited and exploited by anti-Semitic organisations, and it is clear that we and all our partners must enhance our response against anti-Semitism. We all have a role to play when it comes to countering anti-Semitic organisations such as the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement and suppressing the potential reasons people might have for joining these extremist organisations and sharing their sentiments. There already is a bill currently in the Senate docket that does precisely that, the Friedman Act, and I urge you to vote for it.

I will be working with the President and other Departments this month, to determine how we can solve the anti-semitism and terrorism crises that let this attack happen. The despicable criminals who drive terrorism are dynamic, inscrutable, and highly adaptable. But failing to confront them comes with a terrible human cost. We must be ruthless now in our response.

Sincerely,

Acting Secretary for Homeland Security

After reading the letter Senator Moore immediately notified the Department of Justice of a violation of the Hatch Act by the Acting Homeland Security and sent them a copy of the letter. He also printed and saved various copies of the letter to potentially send to the press, though he expected a random Congressperson had already sent it to a network.
