Anne appreciated Carrie's honesty. "I understand the situation you're in. Although if there is a candidate the leadership could endorse without angering the Senator's supporters..." A playful smile appeared on Caldwell's face, a sign that she's not particularly bent on pushing this point. "However, if you could put a good word in with other House Democrats, that could help unify the progressive vote, especially now with Westra out of their good graces."

The implication was clear, even though Anne wasn't particularly direct on this point. 'If it's not me, it's going to be Murphy.' And apparently that's a reality Simone didn't want to live in.

Caroline may be progressive on social issues, but she was a determined moderate for the most part. Determinedly at peace with the establishment. She scratched her chin for a moment, thinking. "Nez would be your best bet. Murphy's made overtures to her but she's not enough of a fool to get drawn into his attempt to split the party. I can definitely put in a good word to the Speaker about you, at the very least. I'm sure the leadership can say some nice things about you - in line with other candidates I must stress, we must be careful not to tip the scale - but there is something you could do for me in turn."

It's a problem we need to nip in the bud, and our hand can't be seen in it. Now, John Nathan Lynskey is a good progressive. Way left of me, I don't think he likes me all that much. But he doesn't bite the hand that feeds him. Murphy's going after his progressive credentials and trying to cast him as an establishment do-nothing. It would be greatly appreciated, and there would be significant gratitude if you could go swing for him. By all means, you'll possibly find he's a very valuable ally to have in Massachusetts. Popular former Governor, only Democrat they've returned since Dukakis."

She hated pulling this kind of thing with Anne, she respected her too much for it, and she looked obviously uncomfortable with playing this sort of game with someone she valued as she did. "In return, I promise I'll have some word with progressive members of the House caucus, and I'll make sure that where the leadership do make comments, those comments will be more favorable to you."

Carrie wasn't asking for a small thing. With Winthrop out of Westra's camp the thought of possibly unseating the champion of the Green New Deal wasn't a one she was particularly fond of. With a sigh Anne delivered her reply. "I'm not going to lie, this is a risky maneuver. I would have to meet with Governor Lynskey, before making a final decision, of course. I think we could appear together at one of my rallies, he could introduce me, I could praise him. Something like that. Definitely on the positive side."

Anne was visibly conflicted about the issue. Having recently served as the Chair of the Democratic Governors Association not long ago, Caldwell wasn't unfamiliar with helping the campaigns of candidates she didn't agree with, but she never had to challenge an incumbent. Especially one that she viewed favorably. Regardless of the decision she would make in the end it wouldn't be an easy one.

"Well, about Westra," he pondered. "We should go tag-team to knock him down a notch on the debate stage. The reason he has all this support is because people believe he is progressive. Those are voters who could be going to us instead, the real progressives. You could go with abortion, I could go with healthcare and we hammer him on it. I don't know, you could do the healthcare, and I could do the abortion arguments?"

"I think the first idea is better, considering, you know..." Anne replied, slightly amused by the whole situation. "...It's just I think abortion arguments would sound more credible coming from, you know, a woman."

"Yes, that's where I was trying to hint at. I just didn't want to assume since you're a woman that you definitely wanted to argue on abortion," he said. "That's good then, we've got that sorted. "I also wanted to talk to you about vote splitting. I'm planning on staying till Super Tuesday, that's where I've placed my eggs, but probably so have you, since you'll do quite well in Washington. But I believe, depending on how we go in the first states, one of us should make room for the other."
