Cristina was accustomed to the typical 'how do you pay for it?' question. She heard it so many times throughout her "career" that it became a sort of a joke among her staff as well as the greater left-wing community.
Regardless, she understood the need to answer it.
Cristina cleared her throat before answering. "Senator, I'm not going to lie, passing a bold agenda will require a lot of tough conversations, because it will require raising taxes. When it comes to Medicare For All we would have to introduce a series of taxes, in a progressive form, that would help us pay for the program, including - but not limited to - a payroll tax of approximately 7%. I understand that Senator Winthrop has introduced a series of taxation bills that would help finance the Green New Deal."
Cristina took a very brief pause before continuing. "I understand that this is a radical agenda, requiring drastic change. This is why we need to build a progressive, grassroots movement of ordinary Americans led by activists and politicians, such as ourselves. We need to stress the real impact of our policies on the day-to-day lives of our constituents. If we don't pass programs such as the Green New Deal we will continue going down the path of environmental destruction, which might very well end humanity as a whole. Medicare For All is a program that would save tens of thousands of lives and endless families from death, grief and poverty. Part of the reason why I am in politics is to fight the difficult battles, battles that others might be too scared to fight."
“If you could vote for a Medicare public option would you do it? Or would you only support Medicare for all.”
"If a public option came up I would vote for it." Cristina replied. "I would like to replace it with a universal healthcare system down the road, but I understand that a public option would be a step forward nonetheless."
