"Your party's chances of winning back the House depend largely on who you run for President and what policy platform you stand on. The American people are the American people, we're appealing to the same electorate, irrespective of the size of the House. And you wouldn't be the only Republican supporting the bill, you have more than adequate cover from criticism." Simone was surprised that Ruler wasn't as much of an exploitable idiot as she'd sized him to be, in all honesty.

"There must be something you'd be interested for in your district. More support for ethanol subsidies? Biofuels are a big deal in Fort Dodge. There's a couple of military bases in your district - I'll make sure they're ringfenced from closure when the base realignment and closure assessments are made."

“There’s a lot of good candidates, but not a lot of great ones in my view. Whether it was Baharia, Clifford, no matter who, usually, you can see a great president ascending to the top even by now, but I’m not getting glimpses of anything like that yet. There’s a few who are competent, but none that really shine yet.”

Governor Long paused and thought for a second about how he may have just insulted the man across from him.

“But yeah, I think you’re up there with the best of ‘em. Westra too. Velez has a bit of Baharia’s charisma, but I have other concerns with him.”

I'm sure he's good at activating those college towns, but I have serious concerns about his policies on agriculture. He wants to cut some $20 billion from subsidies, not really a vote winner, and he's been pretty open about it too. It won't hurt you so long as you keep him close."

"The Republicans are a different kettle of fish altogether. Wolf Jr appears to be fading, and why wouldn't he? He's got the charisma of a dead fish. I don't even believe a real 'Wolfist' is running on the Republican-side, Prendergast is a moderate and deal-maker at heart, I can tell."

As the debate ended and the moderators began to speak to each other and the crowd, the candidates were left to their own devices. The former actor made sure to remove his microphone and blew a kiss to his wife in the audience before turning to face the others already talking to each other. Spellman chose to go speak to Senator Westra first, going towards the man and patting him on the shoulder while offering him a handshake.
