Senator Abigail Winthrop (D-MA)
March 20th, 2019
Austin, Texas

Abby was in delegate-rich Texas, which Democrats were eager on flipping in the near future, to ensure that the progressive wing of the party was well-represented at a local party meeting. She was also using this opportunity to launch her new political action committee, People for Progressivism. She had registered it with the FEC a few days ago, and was hoping to grow it into an organization that not only supported down-ballot progressives and left-wing candidates in national elections, but also a group that could conduct research and release new ideas that would strengthen the Democratic Party.

Abby had considered starting the organization as a Super PAC, but she also wanted to use it as an arm to specifically support candidates at the state level, and a Super PAC wouldn't be able to directly contribute to those campaigns. So People for Progressivism was going to be a regular qualified political action committee that would be formally supporting Senator Murphy and Senator Westra in the federal elections, and would prop up primary challengers and progressive incumbents in other offices.

She sat on stage in front of a large audience of Democrats, both voters and party leaders, who had come to listen to what she had to say. She would deliver a brief speech and then open up to Q&A.

"Hello everyone, thanks for being here! It's so great to be here in Austin, where the future looks bright for our party!"

"There is a new theory of how we can win. It can't continue to be about dashing to the center, trying to find the most convenient ground to stand on to appease our big donors and supposed 'moderate' voters. The way our party will start to win back the Senate and Hose is by building a multi-class, multi-race, multi-gender sociopolitical movement that really has been waiting in the wing ever since Arnold Wolf was elected."

"If we have any hope of reclaiming our democracy for the working people and young people of our country, it's through political organizing. Cultural strategies are just as important as political strategies. The fight against Wolfism is arguably more of a culture war than it is a political war. That's why, at first, I started an organization called People for Westra, which by the way is still active. We need to organize around the spirit of volunteering and pitching in to spread the message of progressivism around the country."

"I mean, look at 2016 - why did we lose? We lost because we absolutely failed at outreach, at PR. We didn't get on the level of folks who were left behind in the Midwest, we didn't look hard enough at the problems of individuals living in destitution. And then comes a bombastic force of nature who claims he can bring your jobs back and kick out the Mexicans who are lowering your wages, honestly did we not expect that to be an appealing message?"

"Election seasons end, but political revolutions endure. But unfortunately, the way our campaign finance system works, that revolution can only endure if we have the financial support to keep it running."

"I soon realized that the critical issue with People for Westra is that it can't advertise, it can't spend, it can't direct cooperate with progressive candidates. It simply unleashes the power of human capital - and that is important, to be sure, but considering the fact that progressives are being heavily outspent nationwide by the corporatists and the conservatives, we need our own financial wing."

"Because here's the reality. This movement goes way beyond just one or two people. Even if Tim and Levi do an excellent job of sustaining their own campaigns even if they outrages every moderate in the field, even if one of them becomes president, it won't be enough. To get a wealth tax through Congress, we actually have to see supporters of a wealth tax in Congress. To get Medicare for All past the Senate, we actually need Senators who will support Medicare for All. To get meaningful campaign finance reform, we have to unseat incumbents who are only serving the short-term interests of their lobbyist donors."

"Levi and Tim can't do it all. That is why I am starting People for a Progressive Future. It is an organization that will advance the agenda of progressive Democrats by opposing the big money that floods our local elections from the respective party campaign committees. Yes, I mean the DCCC and the DSCC. They only exist to shut out primary challengers to incumbents who have not served the interests of the people they were elected to represent."

"We need to have the collective power to force that change. Right now, the DCCC thinks it can crush progressive challengers in House elections. But if candidates like Julia Piotrowska taught us anything, it is that fighting for the working class is a message that sells. We just need to propel those voices onto the national stage."

"So that's the mission I'm setting for the upcoming election season, that's the goal of our organization, and we are humbly approaching you guys to help us out. We are looking to hire people, especially young people here in Texas and California and in the Midwest. We need help in communications, in setting up our site and getting everything running. And then we need to do the actual heavy lifting of recruiting candidates who we might not have heard about because they're not getting the attention of the Democratic donors and the mainstream media."

"The vision of this organization is a PAC for the People. I've always been a policy person, and I want to develop this into a think tank of sorts soon enough. But first we actually have to win."

"So I'll open it up to Q&A, whether it's about the PAC or about our grassroots organizing strategy, or anything really."
I’m a democratic socialist. Yes, I believe in the radical idea of sharing, as do so many other people. Fight me.

Bill Proposal Sheet
Official Name: Teacher Increased Pay ActNickname: TIP Act

Overview: Education is an essential right to participating in democracy. It allows Americans to grow their minds and prosper in ways that benefit us all. Taking this baseline as an absolute, it is essential that we as lawmakers strive to grow and improve this education system which reaps massive benefits upon the American economy, culture, and society.

Section 1: The United States, once the foremost nation of the world, has fallen behind many nations in its quality of education. Studies from the United States Department of Education have investigated ways to improve and restore our global standing as a leader in K-12 education. The primary conclusion from this 2018 study which focused on several states, was that increased pay for teachers was the most cost-effective solution for increasing overall educational benefit.

Section 2: The constitutional spending clause and doctrine authorizes Congress to provide conditional funds to state governments upon the meeting of precedent conditions. This power shall be used to give participant States spending money that shall be used to increase the salary and bonus pays of teachers throughout public K-12 school systems

Section 3: Funding for the participant State objective to increase K-12 teacher pay shall originate from a 1% reallocation of funds from the current military budget or alternatively in the form of a one timer wealth tax if a national emergency is to emerge.

Section 4: This act shall benefit the national education system which fundamentally benefits all Americans

This bill is then honorably presented to the House of Representatives for consideration in order to increase K-12 teacher pay to improve the United States Law and education system and is backed by Brett Thomas on (insert date)

Tim Westra 2020: The Anti-Poverty Agenda
In the wealthiest country in the history of the world, it is a national embarrassment that 1 in 8 Americans are living in poverty, and many more are near the poverty line. It is time to adopt an agenda that treats the poor like human beings with a minimum standard of dignity. By strengthening existing welfare benefits, creating new social programs, and eliminating unfair eligibility requirements, we can really end poverty once and for all.
With flat incomes and inequality stuck at historically high levels, one might assume that chronic economic insecurity and an off-kilter economy are the new normal and that nothing can be done to fix it. But there is nothing normal or inevitable about elevated poverty levels and stagnant incomes. They are the direct result of policy choices that put wealth and income into the hands of a few at the expense of growing a strong middle class.

Despite irregular reductions in the poverty rate, poverty today remains statistically the same as it was in the 70's. The good news is that programs designed to alleviate poverty have been helping when provided with the necessary resources. The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit (CTC) lifted 8.9 million above the federal poverty line, most of them children. SNAP and housing subsidies lifted 6.2 million people above the poverty line. Social Security continues to be the largest anti-poverty program in the U.S., lifting 27.2 million people above the poverty line last year.

But, with federal welfare programs facing the threat of more cuts from Wolf and his GOP cronies, it is essential that we do more. It is no longer good enough to see temporary reductions in the poor population. We need to end poverty forever.

Tim will make ending poverty his number one priority. The fight against poverty has been his life goal, and he's not backing down now. By electing a president that truly works for working people, a real anti-poverty agenda can become a reality.

THE ANTI-POVERTY PLAN

Tim fundamentally believes that society as a whole is better off when the neediest among us are better off. This nation can make a difference in the lives of the poor by redirecting wealth to create better conditions for those who are struggling.

Tim plans to redistribute wealth to the poor by:

- Create an American Social Fund to pay a universal dividend. Our natural patrimony and economy belongs to everyone, so it follows that we establish a social owned fund to preserve a minimum standard of dignity for everyone who inherits this land.

Expanding the Earned Income Tax Credit. No working person should be living in poverty. By increasing EITC payments, providing monthly cash assistance, and extending eligibility to more people, this federal program can function as a Guaranteed Minimum Income to the working people who need it most.

- Eliminating unemployment through a Federal Jobs Guarantee. Since the 1990's, job growth has been one of the only factors that has reliably reduced poverty. Guaranteeing a stable, good-paying union job through a public option for employment will lead to permanently low, virtually nonexistent unemployment levels. It will ensure job security, not just an abundance of jobs.

- Saving Social Security. By raising the Social Security taxable maximum to $250,000 and ensuring that high-earners lift their own weight in payroll taxes, we can keep Social Security solvent for our seniors for another 50 years.

- Sharing corporate wealth with workers. Under our Workplace Democracy plan, big corporations and all publicly traded companies will be required to provide at least 2 percent of stock to their workers every year until the company is at least 20 percent owned by employees.

- Ending at-will employment. No business should be able to fire a worker for any reason. A Westra Administration will pass "just cause" laws to ensure that Americans are job-secure and are able to unionize without the threat of being terminated.

- Making pre-k and childcare universal. The childcare crisis is keeping women out of the workforce and is stranding families in a perpetual state of poverty. Tim will incorporate free prekindergarten into the public education system and will work with private and local providers to create an efficient, affordable government-backed childcare system that provides free services to Americans living below 200% of the poverty line. No parent should have to choose between children and work.

- Providing 12 weeks of paid family leave, as well as paid sick leave. The United States is the only developed country in the world without paid family and medical leave and paid sick days, making it very difficult for millions of American families to balance work and family without having to sacrifice needed income. Paid leave is an important anti-poverty policy, as having a child is one of the leading causes of economic hardship.

- Bringing down rents with a Renter's Tax Credit and by eliminating the housing shortage. Nearly two-thirds of renters nationwide say they can’t afford to buy a home, with home prices are rising at twice the rate of wage growth. 11 million Americans spend more than half their paycheck on rent. Eviction has become a cause of poverty, not just a condition of poverty. With a fully refundable tax credit for low-income renters, and by making historical investments in building affordable housing, we can end the housing crisis forever.

- Eliminating all medical debt, providing affordable + universal health coverage, and reducing prescription drug costs. Medical costs are the number one cause of bankruptcy in America. With a Medicare-style public option that is free to the poor, by allowing the Department of Health and Human Services to negotiate drug costs, and by eliminating all existing medical debt, we can significantly reduce poverty that comes as a result of the unjust status quo in healthcare.

- Raising the minimum wage to a living wage. Every working person deserves a good salary that is indexed to inflation. A Westra Administration will pass a minimum wage hike of $15/hour, the first minimum wage increase in 10 years.

- Expanding SNAP and eliminating all eligibility requirements other than income. Strikers, immigrants, and students all deserve to meet theirbasic nutritional needs. We will double funding for SNAP over ten years, which currently does not cover the cost of a low-income meal in 99 percent of US continental counties and the District of Columbia.

The success of a society should be gauged based on how we treat the worst-off among us. In any civilized nation, a minimum standard of dignity should be met. In Tim Westra's Anti-Poverty Agenda, we strive to reach an America where no citizen lives in poverty.

Monday 25th March, the Greenbrier, White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia
The Prendergast Campaign Launch

The Greenbrier Hotel happens to be far and away the finest hotel in West Virginia, and one of the most notable in all of the United States. Over two dozen U.S. Presidents had stayed there at some point. Its beautiful facade of Federal architecture reflected the grandeur of the Capitol and the White House. Simply put, you could not find a more Presidential location to start a campaign, and a lot of money had gone into this - personal money to as far an extent as was legal - along with calling in a fair few favors across West Virginia. Everything needed to be perfect, the Governor was very particular about that much.

Among the guest list were a cadre of favorites - The Senators that Prendergast had roped in as allies. Contacts from both business and labor who were familiar to him and with whom he had maintained good personal relationships for this very purpose. Members of the West Virginia Legislature from his Party populated a healthy couple of rows. Even some coal miners, and figures he had met in the states he had toured so far were present to represent the every-man. And then, of course, the press, with correspondents from every major network invited to come be a part of the launch - especially for the press conference at the end of the event.

Food was laid on, campaign literature disseminated, and there was music: a mixture of patriotic old tunes, momentous classical songs, and a cluster of tunes by the few musicians who could bear to have their music played by Republican candidates. There were opportunities for Senators Anderson and Slater (and Stuart, if he chose to come) to give speeches before the ‘main event’, should they take up those opportunities. The schedule was set up to be flexible, to accommodate them if they wanted to speak, but just as easily to remove them in case they didn’t. This was all ruthlessly choreographed behind the scenes, to make sure that not a toe was stepped out of line. It was an efficient, professional operation. Even if Jonah Prendergast wasn’t necessarily the most polished man with his own work, he evidently paid his staff very well to make sure everything else looked perfect and projected the competency he professed to bring to the role.

Eventually, later during the event, American Rock ‘n’ Roll by Kid Rock would start playing, a song that Jonah absolutely despised but some advisers told him would strike the right balance of dynamic and patriotic, and besides, Kid Rock was a Republican, so they could probably milk it for a bit. Two neat rows of American flags lined the back of the stage, with perfectly polished brass flagpoles and each flag fastidiously positioned to fall in just the right way. A podium stood at the front of the stage, emblazoned with a big black letter ‘P’. P for Prendergast. P for President. Black and red weren’t necessarily the most conventional campaign colors, but they were striking. Under the ‘P’ sat his name - Prendergast. Originally the name of long distance English forebears, it had its origin in 10th century Flanders, a bastardization of the name of a Flemish village long since demolished and forgotten. It had dignity, it had character. He carried it well, he thought. And then the motto: Guarding a Greater America. A mantra. A code. A promise.

Jonah did not lean on the podium. He did not put on his spectacles, or marshal a stack of notes. He stood at the podium for a moment and looked at the microphone, pondering for a moment. Did he take it off and carry it around the stage, showing the same dynamism he did at his town halls? Or would he let it stay where it was, speaking as a pillar, an authority figure, a commander-in-chief? The latter would suit him nicely, and he adjusted his tie for just a moment before beginning his speech, the glint of cameras in the background - both photographers and newcasters - documenting this moment.

”Ladies and gentlemen. People of America. I cannot say I entered 2019 with a certain determination of running for President. No true-blooded Republican can honestly say as much. When I heard the news regarding the President’s illness, I mourned. I mourned twice. Once for the President, and once for the people of this great country. In the wake of the President’s diagnosis, we saw Democratic Senators take a terminal illness, a dreadful tragedy, and they spun it into a cheap, reductive, uncivil political point.

What that moment illustrated to me distinctly is that the Wolf Revolution, the upheaval in our politics, the process of restoring liberty in these United States by countering the corrupt Washington establishment, is in danger. The mandate of the voters in 2016, who hoped and expected to see Arnold Wolf as President through to January of 2025 was left bare and unprotected against the predatory practices of not only Democratic opportunists, but those establishment forces in certain parts of the Republican Party who had not wanted Arnold Wolf to run in the first place - the Never Wolfers, the Deep Staters, the Dirty Democrats - an axis of evil festering in the heart of our federal republic.

Arnold Wolf has Made America Great Again. He has Made America Strong Again. He has Made America Safe Again. He has Made America Win Again!

And already the wheels are in motion to take that away from you, the ordinary American, the hardworking American, the American who put his trust in Wolf and now is wounded, as I am wounded, that he cannot see it through for the full eight years.

I cannot say I understand God’s plan, and it is not for me to challenge Him, but what I do know is that I have the power to act on this mortal plane to fight back against those evils which seek to undo all of the progress of the Wolf Presidency.

It is for that reason that I here announce that I am running as a candidate for the Republican nomination for the Presidency of the United States of America.

We cannot afford to take chances. We cannot afford to let down our guard. If we don’t focus, if we take our eyes off the ball for just a moment, then the effort to drain the swamp will have been for nothing. The swamp rats, the bog monsters, the insects, the infestation will return, and it will do so with a vengeance. Corruption in America must end, and I swear to you, I will continue the work of our President in tearing these people down and making sure they aren’t in a position to hurt the American people again!

The Greenbrier Hotel, this magnificent building around you, was built by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, in a time when the massive innovation of industry and business was allowed to achieve great works such as these. However, it is so much more than a resort. After the Civil War, General Lee wrote a manifesto here in White Sulphur Springs calling for the wounds of the War to be healed, and for unity between North and South to be restored. In the Second World War, it became a military hospital, treating no less than twenty-five thousand war wounded, attending to the needs of this great country in a time of great darkness for the world. In the Cold War, it was in a great bunker beneath this hotel that Congress was to take refuge, so that American liberty might outlive socialist tyranny. The history of this place is a reflection of the America I wish to see. Industry and diligence reward, the many States United, the needs of the country addressed, and the primacy of our values projected far and wide, and without fear.

It is sad to say that thanks to the Democratic Party, and even some charlatans who pretend to be Republicans, President Wolf has been restrained from fully realizing that vision.

Immigration reform and the defence of our borders has been blocked by the Democratic Congress. As President Wolf endeavors to build the Wall, drug cartels and people smugglers endeavor to race their caravans of criminals to our borders before it is finished. Improvements to drug pricing and the overwhelmed healthcare system have been blocked by the Democratic Congress. Republicans have a clear interest in improving this but the welfare of the American people doesn’t matter to Speaker Douglas and his cronies. Infrastructure repairs, an issue which both American business and American labor unions are united on, have been blocked by the Democratic Congress. An average of 128 bridges collapse in the United States every year! Will the Democrats help? No, they won’t!

We’ve got to complete the Wolf Revolution, the Wolf Pack have got to bare their teeth and dig in to the task. Not only do we need to maintain Republican control of the White House, but we need to see the Republican majority in the Senate expanded, and Republican control of the House restored! I believe I am the best candidate to support that effort, with my eye on down-ballot races, and my pockets open to supporting them with the full resources and energy I can bring. I’ve met a great many righteously angry people as I’ve travelled around the country, and my advice to them is this: Take your anger and put it on paper. Vote for your Republican candidate, because I’ve seen how things are in the parts of California where the Democrats don’t even pretend to care. I’ve seen the people in Maine whose communities are dying because Baharia ripped out its heart! I’ve met the people in Iowa whose farming communities struggle from unreformed agricultural policies that the Democrats refuse to act on! And here in West Virginia, my home state, where I was born and bred, where I grew up, where I made my money and where I am now Governor, the destructiveness of a faulty federal government is practically in our blood. Baharia waged war on our jobs, on the hearts of our communities, and we got damn close to dying, but we scraped on through, and thanks to Wolf, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel.

Democrats hate our mining communities. Our energy communities. Our paper communities. Our logging communities. Our farming communities. Our industrial communities. If you’re not an office professional, you don’t exist to them. That elitism stops now. The America I grew up in was not one that decided it was time to cancel entire industries and leave the people who worked in them to go to dust! All Americans want is to be able to do honest work for honest pay, to put food on their family’s tables. I dare anyone to stand up to me and tell me that it’s wrong for me to support them in that goal. You will get to keep your job, you know there will be a job out there for your children to support their families, you know that America is working again! And no one has the right to take that away from you!

President Wolf put America First. He put American people first. American lives. American workers. American children. American souls. To Democrats, with their special interests and their ulterior motives, that was the original sin. I will keep America First. Every consideration that would cross the Resolute Desk, my first question will be ‘what does this mean for Americans?’ And if the answer is that it disadvantages an American, any American, in any way, I will put an end to it. That doesn’t just apply to domestic policy, but foreign policy as well. I’m going to see an end to our wars, decisive victories that will let us bring our boys home to their families. And just to show that I’m not a totally partisan hack, I’m going to take a leaf out of the book of that fictional Democratic President Jed Bartlet, and ask the question: ‘Where is the warning to the rest of the world that Americans shall walk this Earth unharmed, lest the clenched fist of the most mighty military force in the history of mankind comes crashing down on your house?!’ Let that define the Prendergast Doctrine, ladies and gentlemen - civis Americanus sum - I am an American citizen. Do not do me harm, or the fury of God expressed in ballistic form will come down upon your head.

We’ve got to restore the rule of law in America. The President has done masterful work in reforming the judiciary, restoring dignity to our courts by replacing corrupt, overreaching judges with earnest jurists who respect the law as written. I will not allow Democrats to unravel the First Amendment, as they are trying to do before the House of Representatives. I will not allow them to destroy the Second Amendment, and leave you naked and undefended in the face of their crooked schemes! I will not see the Supreme Court packed with extra justices to twist it into a vehicle of their own agenda! There will be law and order in the United States! Our police will get the powers and the resources and the federal support to do their jobs, to clamp down on crime and the causes of crime, by any means necessary! We will end sanctuary cities, which is merely rebellion by another name, so that the law of the United States will remain unharmed and that our communities are kept safe by the criminals shielded by these unconstitutional ordinances! We will see that justice is done by our Angel Families, and that no one else needs to lose their child because of criminal aliens invading our towns and neighborhoods! I will see the Great Wolf Wall built from Tijuana to Brownsville! There are simple solutions to so many of these problems that the Democrats have prevented the President from enacting every step of the way. I will fight to see these evils conquered!

This is an awesome undertaking, there is no denying that. But having conquered the world of big business, having had the distinct pleasure of serving as Governor of West Virginia, I profess that I have the breadth of experience to bring to this fight, without being a partisan Washington swamp alligator. It would be a distinct honor for me to take that experience, as a dealmaker, as a builder of consensus, as a man who gets things done, and bring it to the Oval Office, and complete the Wolf Revolution. I stand before you as the man committed to guarding our Greater America.

Thank you, God bless you all, and God bless the United States of America.”

There would be some other speeches by surrogates after the speech, though the final feature of the night would be in a separate room, where Jonah would take the questions of distinguished members of the national (and international) press. The press conference would be distinctly more comfortable and intimate than the big announcement, showing a duality between the grand gestures of a commander-in-chief, and someone who maybe - just maybe - could be a grandfather to the nation.

"Hi my name is Mark. I got laid off from my job at a factory at the start of the recession, but since fracking started growing in the state I have been able to get a job in the natural gas industry. Fracking employees thousands in the state, it feeds my family and has kept our head above water. The Governor of this state has been waging a war on fracking in the name of the environment and its cost some of my friends their jobs. And I want to fight global warming.... switching to gas from oil has cut our emissions considerably."

"My question is... can you promise not to go after my job?"

"First of all, can I just say how happy I am that you've been able to bounce back from the recession, and I hope that this recovery has translated into prosperity for your family. To address your question, I want a just transition to a Green Economy. None of this 'end coal tomorrow' lack of pragmatism that some other candidates are promising. We have too many sectors that are unprepared to shift over to a green economy. As President, I would spearhead efforts to expand renewable power, and can confidently commit to a net zero emissions goal by 2045, any workers caught up in that transition would be retrained should it come to that. The next switch from gas to wind, solar or nuclear will effect our emissions for the better, and I want to ensure workers like yourself are able to reap the benefits of any green economy that follows just as much as other Americans. That looks like retraining where needed to me. I don't believe this is an overnight change, I don't think any President can do away with natural gas in the next decade, I think of it as the bridge to a zero emissions economy if the research and development leads to improved controls over methane leakage, my priority in addressing climate change is moving away from coal and oil as a source of power, and financing the research for Hydrogen and Electric Cars, I want every second car sold in the United States to be electric or hydrogen by 2030. I hope you'll forgive me if I'd want to reorient those between jobs towards solar, wind, hydro or nuclear over natural gas. Does that address your question?" she asked.

A question, coming from a woman of a professional inclination (albeit this wouldn't be visible from beyond a computer screen), read thusly:

"Senator Dayton, a 47.5% higher tax band would be among the higher tax bands in all of the Western world. Although not so extreme an example, when France's Socialist Party raised their top tax band to 75%, this led to capital flight - even if businesses didn't leave France, the higher rate taxpayers did - and tax receipts went down. In the UK, when corporation tax rates were lowered, receipts went up. Don't you believe tax rates should be set to an objective, optimal rate to maximise receipts, rather than dogmatically set punitively in order to mollify the progressive wing of the Party?"

"In Australia an individual pays 45% at the highest rate, and a further 2% for their public healthcare system, bringing them out to 47.5%. In Japan that highest rate comes to 45%, and that's also the figure in France. The difference is that all these countries also have much higher VATs than any VAT proposal that I'd consider as President, and they also bring in much higher inheritance and capital gains taxes, hence the capital flight. I don't subscribe to the labels of Progressive or Moderate, these are terms I don't particularly value," she smiled, "I prefer to present policies I consider to have merit, a 47.5% top bracket wouldn't effect the vast majority of Americans and would address rising income inequality in our country. I'll also point out how in France, which you've brought up, for some time they had a substantial wealth tax, a proposal I don't particularly view as doable or good, in the United States. This also led to the capital flight. 70% of Americans earn less than $50,000 a year, I think asking those earning over 1.2 million dollars, the top of the 1%, to pay just a bit more so ordinary Americans are able to have a slice of the American pie."

Dear Representative Simone,

Hope you're weathering the current political climate well. I'm looking to make a big entry here as a junior congressmen and you seem like one of the key people to get to know here in D.C.. If you want to do some work together here is a bill I've been working on, which could be a big boost for a democrat like yourself but could use some experienced oversight.

I'm attaching the bill below for your consideration and support. Let me know what you think.

Best,

Brett Thomas
United States Representative for the North Carolina 4th District

FROM: [Representative Caroline Simone]
TO: [Representative Brett Thomas]

Hi Brett,

Improving education in the United States is very important to me, and I agree with you that it will be positive for Americans to move forward on making such improvements, however I do have some concerns about your bill both structurally and politically.

Swing by my office and sit down with me, would you? There's a lot I'd like to talk to you about.

Yours,

Carrie.

If you’re not an office professional, you don’t exist to them. That elitism stops now. The America I grew up in was not one that decided it was time to cancel entire industries and leave the people who worked in them to go to dust! All Americans want is to be able to do honest work for honest pay, to put food on their family’s tables.

Senator Richard Slater

The day went on as surrogate after surrogate came up to deliver speeches in support of Prendergast. Slater was waiting patiently for his turn to give a speech. After some time standing still, the announcer loudly called for the Senator to enter the stage. He gladly walked over to his podium, breaking from his usually serious demeanor to smile and wave at the large crowd cheering him on. It felt great to hear so many people enthusiastic about him. The chanting and cries of support gave him confidence, and he would use that confidence to his full advantage.

After a few moments embracing the hyped crowd, Slater returned to his typical stoic nature. Taking his place at the podium, he leaned over very slightly, looking on at the audience he'd be speaking to. He looked at the cameras and journalists in the back, wondering how they might spin this speech tomorrow. He projected power as he stood there, waiting for the noise to die down so he could deliver his statement of support.

"Thank you. Thank you to all of you. This state has been so welcoming to me. You should all be proud of what you've made possible here. This truly is an underappreciated state, I have to say.

To all Americans watching, to everyone here in West Virginia, in my home state of Arkansas, and around the country willing to listen, I want you all to think about what is happening in this country today. President Wolf has indeed made America great again. Our unemployment rate is now below 4%. Millions of Americans can now feel confident that their jobs will still be here in America tomorrow. Coal Miners in West Virginia can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that the radical left won't kill their work right in front of them. We are now finally working to fix our broken immigration system. We finally have begun work on deporting illegal immigrants and building a wall to keep our country safe. Terrorists now live in fear of the United States, no longer laughing at our pathetic concessions. ISIS is destroyed, no longer threatening the lives of American citizens. President Wolf is taking on China, a real currency manipulator and a threat to America's power. We know for a fact that America is better, safer, stronger, and more prosperous than ever thanks to one man named Arnold Wolf, and the entire Republican Party behind him.

And yet still Democrats try to say that he is tearing our country down. The hypocrisy and lack of self-awareness from the Democrat Party is astonishing to me. They gave us a rapist in (Not Bill Clinton) and the slowest economic recovery ever with Baharia. the ACA has been a total disaster in so many ways, destroying the healthcare industry ruthlessly despite calls from even some Democrats to stop it. We saw the most disgusting and brutal attacks on America since 9/11 when Democrats were in power. Despite all of this, these corrupt and phony Liberals try to claim that it's our fault - your fault for everything wrong in this country. Instead of talking about solutions to the problems facing this country, they attack hard-working decent people with false accusations of racism and sexism. They do this because they know they can't win on the issues. They know that anyone with a brain can see through their fairy tales of free everything everywhere. They are absolutely triggered by Wolf's success to the point where they can't even find the empathy to pay respect to a man with cancer. This presidency has shown the true colors of the left on full display. We can now see that they only care for power, not for you.

We need a President who stands for the principles of freedom and democracy that make America great in the first place, not one who openly calls themselves a socialist like candidates for the Democrat nomination do. We need a candidate who will promote the will of the people and continue the policies of President Wolf. I believe that Governor Prendergast is exactly who we need to finish off the swamp and move America into the future.

Like Wolf, Prendergast stands for the people who have been shamed and attacked viciously by Democrats just for doing their jobs, like Wolf, Prendergast will work every day to fight for Americans being endangered by illegal aliens hiding in our cities. Like Wolf, Prendergast will take on the enemies of America and win. Like Wolf, Prendergast will create more and more jobs and make our economy continue to grow. Like Wolf, Prendergast will keep America great. It goes even further beyond just Wolf. Prendergast is a businessman who has created thousands of jobs for people here in this state. His work as Governor has guarded and expanded the values that we all share. He will not just follow in Wolf's footsteps, he will lead us into a new era of America, where we will be stronger than ever in the face of adversity, and yet kinder to those who genuinely wish to share in the American dream.

We will lose the White House and thus America to the dark forces on the left if we try to turn the clock back on the progress we made. We cannot have a nominee who is only halfway Wolf, much less someone who was Never Wolf before he was President. We don't need someone who tries to hide our nation's history or someone who can't commit to protecting the rights of religious people to hold their beliefs. We can only win in November 2020 if we shout proudly that we will push forward. Prendergast will push forward to defeat the radical socialists trying to destroy us. We are going to win and put an end to this corruption once and for all! So vote for Jonah Prendergast so we can keep our progress coming. Get on the train or get left in the dust! God bless you and God bless America!"

Tim Westra
Heartland Forum - March 30th, 2019
Storm Lake, Iowa

Not many candidates had accepted the request to attend the Heartland Forum at Buena Vista University in Iowa; typically only four or five candidates showed up. Tim was eager to attend, having been one of the only candidates to zero in on farmer's issues, and with others heavily focused in places like the South and in Pennsylvania, Tim was happy to be the spotlight in Iowa, where he was hoping to build a rapport with the farming population.

He arrived onstage at the forum, which was going to be a Q&A style session with an interviewer, and then would open up to questions from attendees. Tim was feeling confident and relaxed; although throughout his career he had been more inclined to discuss industrial issues like the ones that faced his state of New Jersey, he had built up his own knowledge of agricultural policy in the last few months of his national campaign.

Simon Curry: Hello all, welcome to Storm Lake, our beautiful city. I'm Simon Curry, member of the Des Moines Register editorial board. Thank you Buena Vista University for hosting this event today. We're very excited that you and these fantastic candidates are here today. We'll try and move it along as quickly as possible so the candidates can cover as much ground as they can. And without further ado, I'd like to introduce our first guest, and we're very thankful that Senator Tim Westra of New Jersey can be here! Senator, thank you for coming to speak with us.

Westra: No, thank you, Storm Lake, for so graciously hosting me here today. I had a chance to share a good pancake breakfast this morning with farmers and Iowan families who have been hit by recent flooding in the west part of the state, which has devastated crop and livelihoods. Despite all of that, they graciously agreed to meet with me and convey the concerns of their community. Right now, considering all of the hard work that folks in Iowa put into being the first to have a say in our presidential process, rural America is really getting the short end of the stick. And the vision I have for America is one where family farms, where local cooperatives, really have a shot at getting a good price for their products, and aren't squeezed out of the industry by Big Agribusiness. You guys are feeding American families; you deserve a president who recognizes your hard work and passes policy to reward you, not the folks at the top of the system like the execs at Monsanto who operate out of the financial hubs in America but could never complete a day of farm work in their life.

Curry:
Senator, farm incomes are down by half since 2013, and Iowa farmers are about to lose money for the sixth straight year. Corn and soybean markets are in the tank. Agriculture delinquencies are as high as they were during the Farm Crisis of the 1980s. What can we do right now to provide sustained improvements to Rural America, which has been hit hard by recent trade wars and has only seen temporary relief with massive farm subsidies provided by this president?

Westra: Ok, good. Thank you, Simon. So, I'm proud to be literally the only candidate in this race that has released a plan for our heartland. I'll repeat that: I'm the only person running who actually knows what I'm gonna do to help rural communities. My policy is detailed, crystal clear, and revolutionary, building on what has worked in the rest of the world.

The duration and severity of the current farm crisis suggests an alarming and once unthinkable possibility — that independent farming is no longer a viable livelihood. Small farms accounted for just a quarter of food production this year, down from nearly half in the 90's. In the dairy industry, like our Wisconsin dairy farms, small farms accounted for just about 10 percent of production. The disappearance of the small farm is further hastening the decline of rural America, which has been struggling to maintain an economic base for decades. Instead, what we are seeing is Big Ag trying to maintain a stranglehold on the farm economy, bullying small farms out of business and keeping crop prices low for everyone who isn't part of the corporate club.

So what I have released is a price stabilization plan...a government-backed price guarantee. Instead of endless subsidies to farmers, which don't actually work in providing longterm success, I will create a new system to replace those subsidies, a system I call "a supply management program." And we can actually start the process of this on day one, by executive order, and then pass details with a new Congressional farm bill.

In my proposal, the Department of Agriculture will guarantee farmers a price for their produce at the cost of production through a loan. This would be different from a standard price stabilization system where the government guarantees a price regardless of market prices. Rather, it would provide farmers with a non-recourse loan for their goods. If the farmer can secure a good market price for their produce, they repay the loan. The loan would have a set maturity rate by which the farmer would repay. If the market price is too low, as is the status quo, then the Department of Ag would buy their products as collateral. The farmer would have essentially forfeited their crop for a better price. The government would store these accumulated products in reserve so as to manage supply. The resulting decreased supply would raise market prices for farmers. If the price exceeds a certain threshold, the government would release products into the market. In this way, the agricultural pricing system would be stabilized by the government.

It's a basic economics problem, one that is easily solvable with just some smart policy from policymakers. But right now, we don't want that. Big Ag lobbyists have forced politicians to do their bidding, keeping prices low so that small farm production costs spiral out of control and the competition vanishes. I don't take their dirty money, and I'm willing to fight back for rural America.

Curry:
The average age of U.S. farmers is about 60 years. We are seeing fewer and fewer young people enter the farming career because of barriers to land access and handling higher living costs and expenses. How can we tackle barriers that are preventing young people from becoming farmers?

Westra: Right. So several of my campaign proposals are designed to expand the opportunities that are available to young people. The first is by cancelling student loan debt for low-income and middle class borrowers. And sometimes we grapple with the fairness question...about why we don't reward saving and responsible decisions, et cetera. Was it was unfair to folks who died of polio that we now have polio vaccines? Also, the reality is that interest rates on student loans are rising while college becomes more unaffordable. This generation deserves to be bailed out, because their debt that will harm our economy in the future. We're seeing fewer med school graduates, which means fewer doctors to deal with a rapidly aging population. And, like you said, we're seeing fewer young farmers, which means fewer people working to feed our nation. So it's important that we swiftly deal with the existing debt burden by cancelling 95% of all this debt.

There are ways to encourage more young farmers, ways that are more specific to Ag policy. I will reform remaining subsidies to go towards small family farming, not big corporations who are stealing an inordinate amount of the $16 billion subsidies provided by this administration. This will redirect wealth to small farms led by young entrepreneurs. I'll strengthen USDA programs that support entrepreneurship, programs that provide valuable assistance to small businesses in the farming sector. I scale up funding for this program while closing loopholes for corporations seeking to exploit them. This will help encourage young folks to enter the industry! I've also proposed a historic boost to the Earned Income Tax Credit, which would be especially fruitful to self-employed farmers who are making small net earnings from their work and need a supplement.

Curry:
Suicides in rural areas are on the rise; older white men in our communities who are gun owners are more likely to die of suicide. What would your approach to gun policy be? The conversation is mainly focused on assault weapon bans, universal background checks...but what kind of access issues do you see as important in this discussion?

Westra: So, I support common sense gun safety measures that will reduce suicides in our communities and also prevent guns from getting into the hands of those who wish to do harm to others. I support universal background checks, I thing thats a fair policy that provides legitimacy to the vast majority of gun owners who are responsible in their ownership of these weapons. It prevents people with mental disorders from accessing something that could potentially hurt them, while preventing lone wolf terrorists from getting their hands on a gun. I don't know about an semiautomatic weapons ban, I know that most people who own ARs use them responsibly, for game or protection. I think we need background checks to prevent those guns from falling into the wrong hands. There's also a point to be made that suicides like the ones that occur in the heartland don't employ assault rifles, but rather handguns and such. To finish off on my gun policy, I think there should be a tiered gun licensing program that raises the federal age to buy a semiautomatic rifle, registers the weapon, and then grants a license. This is a system that will prevent guns from falling into the hands of the wrong people.

But to prevent suicide we need a more direct mental healthcare approach. I've already released a plan for a free public option to the poor in America, just like folks in the heartland who are facing destitution because of low farm prices. In the status quo, we're seeing health insurance providers not actually cover therapy, which I think is insane. Medicare for America will cover all psychiatric needs and ensure that folks who need help are getting it. We'll also make more investments in community hospitals out here in Iowa and the rest of rural America.

Curry:
Ok, thank you for your answers. I want to more generally open it up to audience Q&A, so that we can welcome our remaining guests afterwards. Please, ask your questions to Senator Westra.

I can be around 4:15 at your office. I'm looking forward to catching up with you.

Regards, Levi.

The Senator made his way to the office of Representative Thomas, who was waiting for his arrival. He knocked on the door and made his way through.

Brett hears the knock and perks his head up from his work seeing Senator Murphy approaching.

"Ah Levi good to see you, you wanted to speak about the 2020 campaign I recall?" Brett stands up and holds out a hand for the senator

"Yes, I do," he said, shaking the Representatives hand. "What are your thoughts on the Democratic field so far?"

10:30am
March 30th, 2019
Nebraska State Capitol Building, Lincoln, Nebraska

Its a brisk early spring morning in the heartland where a decent sized crowd has arrived for a televised announcement by the state governor that is about to begin. Most of the crowd is older, in the know on politics, and tipped off that something big is about to happen. The governor, Jack Chambers emerges from the Capitol and waves to the crowd heading to a podium set up. The governor arrives, clears his throat, does a sound check, and looks to the side receiving some kind of notification or clearance he nods to. Then the governor clears his throat and speaks;

Good morning people of Nebraska! I wanted to come out here today and thank you for the work you've done to help make this state a beautiful, responsible, and prospering place. It was an honor being chosen this past year to serve this great state for a second term and while I have enjoyed this role with all my heart it has dawned on me that sadly the good times can't last forever. In a couple years, term limits will bar me from continuing in this position and it will be up to someone else to shepherd this state into continued prosperity.

Whoever it is who takes this role will be blessed by the work we've achieved so far. From one of the few fiscally sound and balanced budgets in the entire world, to a state that actually respects its boys in blue and adherence to the law, and a place where the little man can prosper and build his own success without the nightmares of high taxes and bureaucratic red tape. I'm proud of these accomplishments and want to further them both in this role and in my next role

Based on that thought, Its time we took these ideals and expanded them so that the entire country can experience the bliss of living in a well run state like Nebraska. That is why I am announcing my decision to create an exploratory committee to run for President of these 50 beautiful United States of America!

Now you might ask why President? Why not congress or senate? Well its because of my utmost loyalty to the people of Nebraska that I have chosen this path. Our state has five competent, established, and conservative leaders making up its federal representation and I refuse to hamper the gains Conservatism has made in this country for the sake of personal gain.

It is president where an important gap will emerge in the coming years, and we must ensure that a responsible man takes the office. Wolf was a great man and strong independent leader, but now an opening in the high seat will emerge, and I intend to be that responsible man that ensures our nation's continued growth and prosperity.

So If you want a nation that lets its citizens prosper, protects their fundamental rights to property and pursuit of happiness, and respects the administration of justice, then I wanna hear your voice, and have your support in the coming months.

Thank you Nebraska, and god bless America!
