SEIGE!
“1. The surrounding and blockading of a city, town, or fortress by an army.
2. A prolonged period of woe.
3. A seat, especially a throne.”

Setting the Scene...
Image
SIEGE is a game set in idealized myth of the medieval period. However, even the most basic social assumptions of that period are very different from those of our contemporary life. To participate fully in the fabric of SIEGE, players must understand the basic facts of the underlying social and “political” environment. It is important to understand that the information given here is simply common knowledge, not necessarily the most accurate data possible. An Emirate raider or a Bulgar cavalier might have a totally different perspective on these events and people. The descriptions below are by no means impartial, nor even necessarily true; they do, however, represent what most people of your Frankish society and culture have accepted as fact:

The year is 840 Anno Domini. About seventy years ago, when your grandfather was alive, the Supreme Collegium or High Council of Francia chose a native leader, known as The Lord Protector Doruet, to rule the land in the absence of a High King. He reigned well in difficult times, and in 800 AD his child Raimond succeeded him.

Image
A few years later, Raimond fell mentally ill, and the throne was assumed by a man named Frolo Anscoul, as Regent of the Realm. At that time, a massive Bulgar invasion threatened the entirety of Francia until Anscoul hired on loan a large mercenary army of Anglo-Saxon warriors. Victory in defense was not enough it seemed, as Anscoul invade the Bulgarian Empire. With his mercenary horde, he managed to break the forces of the Bulgarian King Hengest and force a peace, sealing it by marrying the King's daughter. Seeing success with foreign armies, Anscoul also brought warlike throngs of Picts and Irish from far North Britian, and settled them around the western coast of Francia to supplement his Anglo-Saxon mercenaries. But Frolo was a tyrannical Realm Regent, and not well loved. Soon, many eastern lords of the Frankish lands rebelled against their new king, but they were crushed and their lands given to his foreign alien allies. Anscoul’s own son Sir Alfonce Anscoul led another rebellion, and, though temporarily successful, he and the rebels we’re forced to flee into exile 23 years ago to the faraway Byzantine Empire. Then, during just this winter came the “Night of Cold Knives,” which saw the Saxons, Picts and Irish betray Anscoul, slaying nearly all the Frankish leadership. Assuming the right to rule themselves, they cinched their hold on power with an alliance with the Bulgarian King, who was still smarting from his earlier defeat

The whole nation suffers greatly now; The Realm Regent himself became a figure head, under the thumb of a Pict-Irish-Anglo-Saxon military mob, who run the nation to satisfy their own desires and amusements. Help from within is unorganized and unfocused, with small bands of vigilantes and rebels sticking to the countryside. Help from without does not seem possible; the forces of Rome, Byzantium, England and Daneland are embroiled in their own devices and unlikely to assist the Franks on their own accord.

...Placing the Plot
Image

Against this backdrop, our story begins in Lesse-Sur-Fortu. A well-sized Frank township along the river of the same name, overlooked by the old, sturdy castle Chataeu Diot. It is divided, as most towns are, into wards. Each has a name that makes it easily recognizable to those who live and make their lives there. There is the trading hub of Market Garden, which shares space with the both the Church grounds of Bishop's Mile and the red-light district Coldsprawl. At the mouth of the river Fortue, mills and lumber yards of Waterdown meld with the fisheries of Noondock. And to the center of all of this is main living quarters of Three Crossings. You are fair, young lad or lass. Perhaps you are a member of this town, a wandering rover, a refugee from another less fortunate town, or any number of curious origins. Whatever path you've been walking, you soon come to stop at the town tavern where upon you see a surprisingly festive message board proclaiming a grand tournament. With challenges of intellect, guile, strength, speed and virtue, there seems to be something for everyone to try their exercise their natural talent. The rewards are just as wide ranging -- all attached to a title. Hedge-knight. As you are likely not a member of the aristocracy, a chance to enter even the lowest, unlanded rank of nobility is an opportunity that only a loon would pass up.

Of course, no one is twisting your arm! You can choose to play spectator to the tournament spectacle, or avoid the entire affair entirely. There is much to get into in the town of Lesse, and Fate promises to keep things most interesting. Rumor has it after all, that the large Saxon detachment has been riding through the neighboring townships, raising all kinds of hell -- as those drunk on the power and authority are want to do. Perhaps you'll find a reason to do something about this? Or, would you see them as a likely group to throw your lot in with, and join in?

Calling Our Hero's...

Welcome to SEIGE. A pet project of mine that is inspired from tabletop RPGs, Arthurian myth literature, and events set across the Middle Ages. Mainly in Europe, but I am open to all sources of inspiration within the time period. This is story of medieval man; magic may exist, as might dragons. You most likely won't be traveling among the company of elves and dwarfs, but you will have heard of them from Uncle Athelwold, whose great-great-grandfather was once a hedge knight and slayed a troll. We will be relying less on outright supernatural, and more myth and mysticism. Time is long, as is the central story, which takes place over three generations. It is recommended therefore, that at the start of play, players have one PC completed and two on the drawing board. It is my hope that this story will lend itself to being played across three generations: grandparents, parents and offspring. It's a big place. With all this time, it is encouraged for players to think of their characters own desires, and fashion them into bucket list of personal quests. These, along with GM designed side-quests, will be the bricks that build the structure for pursuing the central story; and plus, it's just plain fun to get side tracked! But we’re short on seats. As a matter of fact, I would like to start with four players, who feel very motivated and wish to stick this out for as long as it's fun. I do not require rapid activity or posts every day, but I do wish for a slow-burn of enthusiasm. This is more of a marathon, with small sprints in between.

Exploring SIEGE!

"I had a first cousin called Ame Duride; we took us a boat down by the seaside
Seeking good fortune and riding the tide, 'twas just as the day was a-dawnin'!
Then after we moored, we both took a tramp; we met Sire Diot and Sergeant Decant
besides a young squire, whose horn called to camp, with a rooty-toot-toot as a-warnin'!
Sire says, 'My young fellows if you will enlist, a silver a-quickly, shall have in your fist
Besides a gold livre, to kick up the dust, and drink the King's health in the morning!
Were you to be fools, don't take this pure chance; 'Tis destiny calling you to fight for France,
Against the rogue Bulgar, the Pict and the Sax; with glory ne're shall we see mourning!' "

The Great and Powerful
These extraordinary individuals are known throughout the Realm and beyond. Your character has not personally met any of these people yet. Players are advised to review these characters briefly to get an idea of the highest level of success and power that can be reached by characters in the game. Persons in full caps, are real life figures; non-caps are original creations or taken from history with artistic license.

Lord Doruet was the Father of All-Franks -- the first ruler, though he was neither royal or a king, of all Francia; a feat the likes not seen since the realm was known as Gaul. He is a revered folk hero among the natives, and is near-godlike to the more superstitious and pagan.

Lord Raimond was a once great and powerful hero, afflicted by maleficent thoughts that resulted in him being held under house arrest in the grand city of Vecquemont -- for his own protection and that of others. Treatment for his malady has not seen much success -- as there doesn’t seem to be any force able to break the hold of madness on Raimond.

Frolo Anscoul was a sly court functionary during Raimond's rule; a opportunist, he made himself indispensable to the son of Doruet, Raimond. Once the young knight's illness began to become apparent, he was the one that recommend the Protector be taken to rest. Being a step away from the throne as he was, it made the transitions from servant to sovereign outstandingly simple.

Sir Alfonce Anscoul was an unlikly hero, seeing as his much despised father was anything but, who would rather be exiled to the far East, than surrender his sword after his rebellion fell through. Still active in his bid to unseat the corrupt Regent and throw back the wave of foreign forces in Francia, he and his supporters are rumored to be attempting to gain favor in the Byzantine Court -- with the hope of a invasion to liberate Francia a clear goal. Many common folk may support him should such a force be assembled -- but bad faith and suspicion is generally attributed to him, as is the curse of any who carry the family name Anscoul.

Marshal Symonet Capetian is one of the only surviving members of the Frankish Military High Command. After the coup by foreign forces and Anscoul's becoming a puppet, only a handful of the high ranking nobles managed to keep their heads; almost none did, who didn't ally themselves with the Anglo-Saxons, the Bulgars, the Irish or the Picts. Being on campaign against the Muslims in the Iberian penninusla, Symonet's was out of their threatening grasp. With his headquarters high in the Pyrenees Mountains, he and his men of the Southern Army seem to be the Franks only native hope. Though distances are great and vast, being deployed to the front for a decade, it is unknown how aware the military leader is of the great recent events unfolding in Francia.

PRESIAN THE FIRST was the Khan of Bulgaria after Hengest was deposed after his defeat at the hands of Regent Anscoul. His rule was colored by extensive expansion in Macedonia, causing friction between the Byzantines, the Croats, and the Serbs. While not directly overseeing Bulgar forces rampaging through Francia, he was not opposed to the chaos inflicted upon a once powerful rival kingdom.

MICHAEL THE THIRD was the Byzantine Emperor at two years old. Now four, the youngest child of former emperor Theophilos and his empress Theodora is growing up within the court, with the Empire in the care of a regency operated by advsiors, his uncle and his mother.

BEORHTWULF of Mercia, ÆTHELWULF of Wessex, RHODRI THE GREAT of Wales, and OSBERHT of Northumbria were the Kings of Britons and Anglo-Saxons, ruling over a myriad of entangled but disunited kingdoms. All have found their banners and men in Francia, though most are content to stick to the Northern Coasts; mercenaries from these isle kingdoms can be found everywhere though.

KENNETH MACALPIN of Alba was a ruler of Picts, a union of Celtic people in North Britian, who attempted to form into a more central kingdom in the middle of the 9th century. He sought to cement his rule by allowing clans to partake in the conquests of lands and riches to the South in Francia -- a political maneuver which gained him much need renown and popularity, inching him closer to his dream of a Northern High Kingship.

NIALL CAILLE of Tarra was a leader in Ireland who ascended to High Kingship on the trail of war -- he opposed the landing of many viking raids, and even took the fight to Denmark -- pausing to replenish his food stores and treasury on Frankish shores along the way to each counter raid.

Of Local Renown
While still important, these individuals are probably not as well known outside of traveling distance. Some may still be minor forces within the borders, but many are relegated to fame within their household. Your character may or may not know them; the likelihood increasing with the proximity your person has traveled in the past or presently.

Sir Diot is the sire of the castle bestowing his family name, liege lord of the township Lesse, and a rather innocuous middle-age country knight. He served actively in his younger years, under the banner of Lord Raimond, and has seen his share of fighting, though that was quite some time ago. While he is reserved in presence, some might even say haughty, he is not the worst among lords, and by all accounts from the folk, has been a good enough ruler in these bad enough times.

Sergeant Decant is a portly Man-at-arms and leader of the guard force protecting the town of Lesse. He is a well known face in the town proper as well as the castle, being that he is currently the constable and acting sheriff. While a commoner, he is afford a certain respect that is par with that shown to nobles. His entire life of fifty-five years has been dedicated in service to the town of Lesse, and good, honest service it has been too.

Name: Write in your character’s name. Here are some sample male names, taken from obscure characters in Le Morte D’Arthur, that you can use if you wish:

Adtherp, Alein, Aliduke, Annecians, Archade, Arnold, Arrouse, Bandelaine, Bellangere, Bellias, Berel, Bersules, Bliant, Breunis, Briant, Caulas, Chestelaine, Clegis, Cleremond, Dalan, Dinaunt, Driant, Ebel, Edward, Elias, Eliot, Emerause, Flannedrius, Florence, Floridas, Galardoun, Garnish, Gerin, Gauter, Gherard, Gilbert, Gilmere, Goneries, Gracian, Gumret, Guy, Gwinas, Harsouse, Harvis, Hebes, Hemison, Herawd, Heringdale, Herlews, Hermel, Hermind, Hervis, Hewgon, Idres, Jordans, Lardans, Leomie, Manasan, Maurel, Melion, Miles, Morganor, Morians, Moris, Nanowne, Nerovens, Pedivere, Pellandres, Pellogres, Perin, Phelot, Pillounes, Plaine, Plenorias, Sauseise, Selises, Selivant, Semond.

Examine the name list or select a name that sounds right to you. If you have trouble pronouncing it, write it down the way you think it sounds. It is important that you be comfortable with the name. Furthermore, just about any good English or French name is usable.

Father's Name: Choose another name from the above list (or make another one up) to be your character’s father’s name.

Son/Daughter Number: Eldest sons and daughters have a terrific advantage in SEIGE. Primogeniture is the law of the land, meaning that the eldest son inherits everything (or almost everything) from his father. Eldest daughters usually receive the greatest attention from suitors, allowing them to discriminate more when it comes to finding a life partner. Typically, independent of looks, dowries received are the largest. The younger sons and daughters are generally left out of the inheritance, and must make their own way as ladys-in-waiting, nuns and priests, or poor knights in whatever service they can find.

Liege Lord: By default, your character’s only lord is Sir Diot, Baron of Lesse-Sur-Fortu. Listing a lord’s title (as opposed to his proper
name) in this space is sufficient. If a character has multiple lords, one will be selected as liege, and should be duly noted here.

Current Class, Maintenance, Status: Your first character begins as a commoner, poor, and a bachelor/batchelorette, unless otherwised discussed with the GM. There are four levels of Class, five levels of Maintenance, and four levels of Status. Classes deals with social standing, Maintenance is a scale of poverty to wealth, and Status is the characters known martial relations or lack their of. All of these impact the attitude of NPCs for good or ill if known or brought up in conversations. Each provides its own passive benefits and penalties.
For Class there are:
  • Bonded, are the lowest rung of society, for not even their life is their own. These are debtors in prison, the foreign prisoners of war, slaves from abroad, peasant farmers who are serfs to their land, and indentured servants from Francia.
  • Commoners, are the vast majority of those who live and work in the world. They are the baker down the street, the thug in the back-alley, and the soldier on watch patrol. They are all free-men who find work in craft and trade, putting them above the Bonded.
  • Nobles, are the upper echelon of society. These are the estate owners, and country gentry; the knights and the ladys, who lead the organs of state, military, finance and intrigue.
  • Royals, are centered at the apex of power and danger; interestingly though they are much like the Bonded. Their power is only limited by their lives, which are not their own -- as they are responsible to the slew of Nobility, and by extension, their subjects. These are the Kings, Khans, the Lord Protectors, the Regents, and Emperors.

For Maintenance there are:
  • Impoverished -A person with an income of less than 3 Gold Piece per year is Impoverished. He or she is a miserable lot. In appearance they are ragged, most likely lean and sickly. If a Knight, their armor is likely rusty and pitted. They have no servants of any kind, nor horse or anything of real value. In battle, if held for ransom, they shall be considered little greater than a common foot soldier. Legally, impoverishment means trouble.

An Impoverished Noble, Commoner, or Bonded is not required to remain loyal to his lord since, under the feudal oath, his lord promised him sustenance. He may leave or may be sent away on a quest by the hapless lord. On the other hand, if a vassal knight neglects his land to the point of impoverishment, the lord has the right to cancel their agreement and take the land back: The vassal has clearly failed to maintain the land and uphold his end of the feudal bargain.
  • Poor - Poor individuals are, for whatever reason, unable to maintain themselves in the manner in which they ought. A Noble or Commoner who receives between 3 and 5 Gold Piece per year is considered Poor. In comparison; a Poor Knight has no servants or squire;
rides a mangy, sway-backed horse; is hungry, lean, and ragged; and wears armor in a sad state of disrepair.

  • Ordinary - Ordinary folk are those Nobles most often discussed in SEIGE; for example, whenever the word “knight” is used,
unmodified by another adjective, it refers to a character of this economic standing. Ordinary Nobles and Commoners comprise the
majority of chivalry. Player characters always default into the game as Ordinary folk in terms of economic quality, unless otherwise chosen.
An Ordinary Noble or Commoner receives 6 to 8 Gold Piece per year in money and food, which keeps himself, his family, a horse, and perhaps one servant in a healthy and robust manner of living. His equipment is in good repair, and he may afford a country cottage or even a small manor house.

  • Rich - The wide breath of Nobles, and minor Royalty, are typically considered Rich. They receive between 9 and 12 Gold Piece per year to spend on their maintenance, an amount significantly above normal standards. Their families live well off the fat of the land. Rich Nobles usually wear clothing of colorful fabrics and furs in the latest style, have ornate silver-decorated tack for their glossy-coated horses, and regularly enjoy rich feasts. They typically have at least two servants in attendance, both being well-mounted and attentive to their subjects and vassals needs.

  • Superlative
- Superlative Nobles and Royalty are the most extravagant and impressive of all, requiring 13 Gold Piece or more for upkeep. Their armor shines brightly, and their clothing is sumptuous, with intricate stitching, extensive use of gold thread, jewels, imported feathers, and furs from fantastic beasts. A minimum of three servants, each proud in matching livery, typically attend their every need. Typically they have multiple residences; a city home, a country cottage, and a castle at the very least. Superlative folk also benefit from superior health and the aid of well-equipped, loyal vassals, squires and soldiers in court and battle.

And for Status there are:
  • Bachelor's are unwed men and women, who are in good standing with the social norms, customs and religion of their culture.
  • Married men and woman have entered into the bond of matrimony with another, and are in excellent standing according to the social norms, customs and religion of their culture.

  • Widow/Widower's are men and women who have lost their dearest, and are in a period of extending mourning. At minimum, most are expected to mourn for at least a year, before it is considered proper to seek out the comfort of another possible wife or husband.

  • Rake/Philander is a man or woman considered 'loose' in following the accepted norms and customs of their culture, on which they are measured on a scale disrepute. At the least, they are gossiped about and the source of many unflattering (or flattering) rumors. At the worst, they are an abject outcast, perhaps even to be made or have been made an example by the local church or moral authority.

Current Home: This represents your characters choice of dwelling -- be it a humble peasants hovel or a magnificent palace.

Region, Culture, Religion: It is recommended all initial characters are from the Region of Lesse, were raised in a Frankish culture, and are either Christian or pagan. This is a suggestion; feel free to get creative, but within reason :)

Titles: Characters often have descriptive titles or epithets as well as a given name. Often, these titles describe a physical distinction (e.g. “the Strong”); a place of origin (such as “de Ganis” or “of the Orkneys”), so you might be “of Lesse”; or a family link, such as “Gauter-son” Titles such as “the Bold” are also possible, and may be self-given or earned in play. Many names in Malory are given in French, so a French title rings with authenticity. However, you should decide whether the sobriquet sounds better in English or French. Some are descriptive, such as le blanc (“the white”); le noir (“the black”); or le petit (“the little”). Some are more descriptive of actions: le Desirious (“the Desirer” [i.e., of battle]); le Chevalier au Leon (“the knight of the lion”); of the Seven Seas; of the Golden Ring; of the Black Hat; and so on. However, note that it is often best to wait until your character earns a title for his actions.

Family Class, Maintenance, Status: Same as Character Class, Maintenance and Status
Age and Year Born: Same as the above

LEGACY (For Establishing Families/Clans/Factions)
Family Name: Your sur name, and the one carried by those who share blood with you.

Coat of Arms: A point of honor, pride, renown and identification. Create, borrow, or see GM if you'd like help creating one.

Family Motto Some pointed or wise saying that reflects your familys and characters ideals.

Joust Score: This space is provided to record the results of every joust resolved during game play. You start with a 0 in each
category. Add 1 point to the Wins column every time that your character wins a joust, and add 1 point to the Losses
column every time he loses a joust. These tallies are mainly for the amusement of the players, and do not directly affect the game unless the Gamemaster wishes them to.

Horse: Typically a physical description and type of horse (Charger, for example) that your character is currently using. May use one horse at a time -- all other pack or riding animals must be stored under the Equipment at Home tab

Squire or Servant: Your personal attendee(s) who assist and help your character. All will be NPC's, but may be roleplayed by their prospective players

Equipment: All things of note your character carries. Food and drink need not be specified and is taken for granted, unless you want to.

Additional Belongings: Anything that will be carried in your horse/cart/wagon, and not immediately on your person.

Selected Events: Use this box on the back of your character sheet to record the dates upon which critical events occured throughout your character’s life, including during your playthrough. Below are just some examples -- many others not mentioned can be added, and are up to the players choice.

Born: Your character’s birth date.

Squired: Birth date plus 15 years, and to whom squired,
if part of the campaign.

Knighted: The year in which your character is knighted, and by whom.

Titled: The year in which your character receives a lord’s title (if ever).

Landed: The year in which you were granted a sum of property by your current liege.

Date of Marriage: As recorded in local record, when you and your beloved swore your vows.

Died: The year in which your character died. Useful if you created a family for your character.

Retinue: Simply, the military forces your character can summon and have at his personal disposal. May included temporary forces gifted, hired as mercenaries, or on loan from the King

Family Members: Past, present and future family members.

Holdings: The lands, manors, cities, and perhaps provinces you and your family owns.

History: A small blurb explaining the importance, beginnings, rise, and even fall of your kin
Equipment at Home:For everything too large, important or cumbersome to carry on your person or your pack animal(s). May include any treasure chest, trebuchets or Necronomicons.

Thanks for the traffic down in the thread everyone. Before posting an extensive app, I'd like to get your ideas on the kind of game we'd like via the poll options. I'd apperciate your opinions.

Thats the idea. It is my hope that with four people, even if all decide to do their own thing, I'll be able to provide great detail into the seperate environments.

Thank you! Im hoping for it to make good reading.

Many thanks, though I havn't gotten an app system up yet myself :P

It is a possibility. I'll probably treat it as a discovery found about in a quest.

Well I am for pure narrative all the way. While I have partaken in some of G-Tech's mechanics RP's and enjoyed them I generally much prefer freeform RP'ing where RP'ing ability not randomized dice rolls determine outcomes. Can live with some passive mechanics system as a compromise though.

I'm personally in favor of passive mechanics that inform what characters can do, but without the number crunching and RNG of true dice.

Looks like we'll be going down this route most likely. I'll tailor the app to fit this, and put it up.

Not particularly; I'm more accustomed to using the forums here than I am roll20. And, I'd like to try something different than a homebrew dnd.

I’m currently crafting a Benedictine hermit, a young monk who was raised in an abbey as an orphan and now travels the world to ‘pray and labour’, as Benedictines are known to do. I draw inspiration from Merlin as well as Percival.
The name's James. James Usari. Well, my name is not actually James Usari, so don't bother actually looking it up, but it'll do for now.

Just noticed I was posting under a joke nation that I made, that must’ve looked a bit weird. But I notice on your example application under class you put knight lord. Now is that a social status class or a traditional RPG kinda class?

Very good! Be sure to double check the latest app iteration, as some things have been changed. The App Help is currently in development, but it should offer more help in making a complete app.

So the Class section has been one of the ones changed. Currently, it reads Class, Maintenance and Status. Classes detemine social standing and are at four levels: Bonded, Common, Noble and Royal. Maintenance are at a variety of levels -- still being developed -- and it decideds your economics status atm. And Status is a relationship and family gauge that offers buffs and debuffs, with levels at Batchelore/Batchelorette, Widow/Widower, Rake/Philander, Married/Bethrothed.

For more indepth, check out the App Help later tonight; will be expanding on this section in more detail.

Actually it does not. Under the application it still only say class with no mention of maintenance or status, that part only appear under the sample app and the app help so if you want people to do maintenance and status as well so if you want people to include the other stuff in their apps you might want to update it.

Appreciate that attention to detail; I've corrected it and it should be good to go.

Yes, you have the option to hold off on everything under LEGACY. The only portion required to start is everything in BASIC -- so you can just write NA for everything or leave blank those things in LEGACY for now. Though, you will need to go and edit them if they do change.

Also, I would suggest putting all your current info, into the new and improved app that has been updated. Some sections have been changed, as I have discontinued some things in LEGACY and added some in BASIC.

Hit me up with any questions that you have; I'll try to answer them asap :)

        Oluf Daugaard, Cousin, 21
        Ludvig Daugaard, Cousin, 17
Holdings: N/A
History:
The Daugaard family is not one with a heavy history, nor particularly strange as far as Danes might go. Sons of farmers, they would go viking with others, plundering the Briton coast for gold and slaves. Their largest claim to fame would likely be the fact that, at the age of sixteen, Svend’s cousin Loke would travel with a group of traders down and east, down to the far flung lands of Constantinople where he saw exotic goods, ladies, and best of all, made a small fortune doing so. Of course he made the trip several times over, deigning at one time to gift Svend with a small token of his travels. Svend himself would at the age of sixteen join with others for a raid in Northumbria where he found a smaller taste for blood. The gold found and taken from the church was welcome, though the riding patrol who had heard the bell-tolls was less so. The enemy resulted in a small-time, short-lived siege, the raiders holding-up in the church before engaging the Britons with a shield wall. With the earnings from that raid, due to Svend’s size, he bought a shield and proceeded to make himself a bow. It was a longer process than expected, especially with only the most informal and infrequent training gained from Ribe’s bowyer, and the payment for such a thing was labor in making other bows for the man.

However, as Nialle Caille of Tarra began his own methods, Danemark found itself under attack by the Irish. Svend joined with the rest, taking some pleasure with his newfound bow, some rags, and a pot of burning oil. In contrast the Irish were not very pleased by this. Following these attacks, however, it would become clear that the Irish were not such a horrible threat, that the Danes could repel them, and that Svend wanted to travel just a bit more. He would go south, cutting across Frankish lands on foot while taking some pleasure in killing whatever Irishmen, Britons, and Picts he might find. Traveling throughout the countryside, he mainly killed marauding warbands, bandits, things of that sort through skirmishing. It would become a rare occasion for the man to find himself in a melee, at times sneaking into enemy camps to cause havoc though this was more often with fire than the blade. Svend now finds himself in Lesse-Sur-Fortu, having heard of a Saxon force nearby.
