Introduction
Welcome to 2020: An Alt-Future RP. The lore behind this RP is basically that a serious of coups, civil wars and collapses in the 1990s have significantly shifted the geopolitical stage. The USA and USSR have both collapsed, while some ideologies reach unprecedented popularity in some places. The last of these conflicts would end in 2018. By then, over 40 million people had died. So, to show the full history, here's a timeline of events.
Timeline
1992: The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, as well as Yugoslavia have collapsed by now. The cold war has ended. While many in the United States celebrated, others are scheming. That years US election had seen various far-right, far-left, and separatist parties gain up to 100 electoral votes across the US. Bill Clinton manages to win the elections by only around 55 electoral votes.
1993: Bill Clinton is now President of the United States. Things only get worse during his presidency. Hurricane Andrew devastates Florida, the world trade center is bombed, and the branch davidian compound in Waco, Texas is seized by the FBI. The Waco siege in particular causes citizens to start claiming that the federal government is starting to violate American Freedoms. Militias start popping up across the Southern States. Racial tensions within the nation are also growing. Meanwhile on the other side of the Pacific. The Communist Party of China is starting to split between moderates and hardliners.
1994: More militias pop up across the US. Both the US and Canadian governments start to be concerned about the growing tension and hatred across the US. More Americans are starting to go against the federal government. China also faces political tension as a new wave of riots and protests cause martial law to be declared in Beijing and Shanghai. Quebec is starting to push for complete independence from Canada. Apartheid ends in South Africa.
1995: The Oklahoma City bombing causes the government to begin persecuting militia groups across the US. An executive order repeals the second amendment. October is the breaking point for the US and Canada as the Confederate States of America, Quebec, California, and Cascadia declare independence. The Second American Civil War begins. All US troops are forced to head back to the US. Hardliners successfully take full control of China, inciting mass protests in the process.
1996: North Korea declares war on South Korea, taking advantage of the lack of US troops. China sides with North Korea while Japan sides with South Korea. A Communist coup occurs in Germany, resulting in the creation of the Germanic Socialist Union. The GSU declares war on the Low Countries, France, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Czechia, Slovakia, Lithuania, and Poland. The UK declares war on the GSU. 3 New factions enter the Second American Civil War. The United Socialist States of America, The Republic of Nevada, and The White American Commonwealth. Mexico erupts in to civil war as drug cartels and several radical movements declare war on the Mexican government. California annexes the Baja peninsula.
1997: India and China both enter civil wars. The People's Republic of Dravidia declares independence from India. East Turkestan, Tibet, Inner Mongolia, and Manchuria declare independence from China. Taiwan declares war on China. The Second Korean war had already ended in North Korean victory as well as Japan surrendering. The DPRK invades Manchuria. Alaska declares independence from the US. Hawaii has joined California. Germany has conquered the Low Countries, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Czechia, and Slovakia. A fascist coup occurs in Italy. The new fascist Italy declares war on the GSU. Poland is on the verge of surrendering. Britain keeps Hong Kong. Pakistan's economy collapses.
1998: Poland surrenders to Germany. Canada has taken over Michigan in order to create a refugee zone for Americans migrating to Canada. The US government prepares to evacuate to Puerto Rico. All States except for Virgina, West Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware have fallen. Most of the US armed forces have surrendered. The GSU have reached the outskirts of Paris. The Italian army has kept the Germans at bay through the alps. Manchuria has been annexed by the DPRK. China has completely collapsed. The People's Liberation Army establishes a military junta out of Beijing. Ireland enters a civil war between the Republic and a Communist uprising. The UK splits Ireland with the Communists.
1999: The Federal Government surrenders, ending the Second American Civil War. Peace agreements are also in the works in Europe and China. The Indian civil war has entered a stalemate. The Mexican civil war rages on.
2000: 3 treaties are signed. The Treaty of Las Vegas, The Treaty of Bordeaux, and The Treaty of Chonqing. California, Alaska, Cascadia, The CSA, The USSA, The HAC, Quebec, and Alaska gain independence. Canada gains Michigan. The federal government is exiled to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. In Europe, Germany gains all pre-1914 borders, Austria, Liechtenstein, and German-Speaking areas of Switzerland. France is split between a Democratic West, and a Communist East. Communist puppets are also created in Czechoslovakia, Benelux, and Poland. Italy gains Italian-Speaking areas of Switzerland. In Asia, Mongolia annexes Inner Mongolia. Taiwan annexes Hainan, Guangdong, and Fujian. Tibet and East Turkestan gain independence. China is now under a military dictatorship. Putin has taken power in Russia.
2001: The Indian civil war ends in the division of India between Communist Dravidia and Democratic India. Al-Qaeda carries out a terrorist attack against the world trade center in New York City, part of the White American Commonwealth.
2005: The Mexican civil war ends after the Mexican army gained control of Mexico City. They created a military junta, just like in China. California does keep the Baja peninsula. Tensions start to rise between the CSA and the USSA over parts of Southern Nebraska.
2011: A series of revolutions occur across the Arab World, resulting in the toppling of regimes and in the case of Syria and Yemen, complete civil war. Iraq under Saddam Hussein launches an incursion into Syria to both stabilize the region, and to gain power for Iraq as a whole. A devastating earthquake and tsunami strike Japan, resulting in major damage to life and property.
2014: The Russian Federation under Vladimir Putin invades Ukraine and Belarus. The Germanic Socialist Union declares war on Russia, sparking the Eastern War. It's mostly the GSU and it's puppets against Russia.
2018: The Communist Party of the USSA begins a series of purges, as well a 'Social Revolution', which is similar to the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Tensions between the CSA and the USSA continue to heat up. The only thing stopping a war is mutually assured destruction by thermonuclear warfare. The first Olympics since the 1990s are held in Vladivostok. The Eastern War ends in a stalemate and armistice.
2020: It is now 2020. Japan wants revenge on the DPRK. China wants to take back its former lands. Tensions in the former US are rising. The rest of Europe hates the GSU and its puppet states. The Irish Soviet State starts to fund rebels to take over the rest of Ireland. A World War seems inevitable. But the question is, who will fire the first shot?
