Bio: A man who has made his life by controlling the pathways and roads by which goods can flow throughout China, Yang was originally born to a simple tea merchant. He expected (and was expected) to take up his father’s job when he came of age. But that was not to be, due to his father’s love for gambling. They lost everything. His mother, fearing for the safety of her child, asked Yang’s father’s brother, his uncle Wu and a much more successful merchant, to take care of the boy. Wu took him under his wing, and from him, he learned many of the secrets of economics. Of course, Wu was harsh, considering his brother a failure and a disgrace to the family, and this was apparent in the cold manner with which he treated Yang. As time passed, and Yang grew, it became apparent that there would soon be conflict between the two. So, Yang did what would soon become his modus operandi-he left, after making a deal. Wu would never see him again, but in return, he would get a letter of introduction to a Merchant’s guild. And from there, it was written-His commercial influence spread out, all along the coast. He was, in effect, the Vanderbilt of the day.
