The Bare Necessities

In this galaxy and world, in a far future from our own, many species inhabit the galaxy. However, it is divided, and it is a rather dangerous place. The cradle of mankind, this species with a uncanny ability to spread over the entire galaxy, has long lost it's true name, and stagnated. The first colony ships of this once large entity left many centuries ago, but much of this has been lost to the tooth of time. Hive-minds, robotic entities and all manner of biological creatures calls this galaxy it's home, So who you are, what you do, and if you will live to tale; well, that is entirely up to you.

Technology, and Scope

This is a FT RP where players control entities, included but not limited to nations. There will not be any major story on the part of the OP, rather a relatively free form space opera seems to be on the menu. This RP is in first hand a FT-spin off from the MT region Alitheia, as such we encourage those who wanna join this to also join the MT region. But such is not strictly necessary.

For general statements on technology, see this document. More specific questions? ask away down below, we only bite if asked to
The Galaxy

While the size of entities changes and will differ from one another, most typical powers will have a fair few systems to their name, and should be kept to around 25-35 billion sentient inhabitants

Image

The galaxy is divided into several sectors, while no hard borders, so several entities can be in the same sector permitting. They serve as general outlines, the only exception to this is Sector 18, that contains the cradle of humanity and under the total control of the now stagnant civilisation that controls said cradle.

General Information

Official Nation Name: Nauchrten Hegemony
Population: 37 Billion Souls
Preferred Map Location: 17

Political Information

Governance Type: Typical Unitary Democracy
Dominant Political Ideology: Militaristic Social Democracy, kinda

Military

Total Military Personnel: 1% of the biological population serves in the military based on merit(ca 370 million souls) in all branches, however a large number of robotic frames "slaved" to a biological soldiers mind would be fielded in battle
Historical Record of your race/Civilization: The Nauchrten race(think Quarians from ME, but without the lack of a immune system) Springs from the the planet of Svarcho'n, generally a history allegorical to humanity until FTL was discoverer, and by extension; Humanity itself, who was first of the two has long been lost to time, but whoever it was, the other discovered it within the same decade. Fearing the humans steps where taken to unite under one government that stands to this day, this at the same time as the Nauchrten started to claim the stars. It's history is a rather bloody one, it's battles with the old United Earth Government many, and the fall of it did not go without controversy, as the Hegemony moved in to "protect" a few human inhabited worlds close to it's borders at the very start of the end. Granted that the past 200-odd years have been somewhat peaceful, barring the occasional border skirmish with the Cradle of Humanity. Generally they have tried to keep friendly relations with most "nations" but the scars of the past, and the threat of the old cradle of humanity means that they still posses a well trained and services fighting force, as will all jobs selected biased on merit(think the system used in Psyco-Pass), this force augmented with large forces of semi-autonomous droids(the physical looks of the Geth from ME)

So, to add a bit on the story...

The Story So far...

200 years.

It has been 200 years since the Great revolution that shattered the Old, decaying Corpse that was the United Earth Government. 200 Years since, like many that came before them, the Colonies and Client states of Mother Terra Said "No more!" and Broke away from the old federation.

Many...Most, did so with out Bloodshed and that was because many of them were simply to far flung, or too far fortified by the time the beleaguered and thinly Spread Federation Fleet could not re-take them.

This was, of course, after the Crescent Stars declared their independence and ended up drawing the ire of the Federation Military...well, most of it.

By the end of the Rebellion, 3 planets were bombarded, 1 one glassed, and every Planet that held a Colony had it's moon shattered by Federation forces, creating a artificial Asteroid belt for in orbit of every planet in the Crescent Stars.

How ever, in due time, The Accords were signed, ending the rebellion, and solidifying the Independence of the Stars, and the Creation of the Colonial Union.

With the Accords, the Federation found it self at peace...and lacking 87% of its former territories.

It's been 200 years. A few wars have been fought, a few Boarder Clashes, nothing Major. Most of the Human Powers, the CU, the UEF, they have solidified their strength. The UEF still holds sector 18, and with it the Cradle of Humanity. While no single Nation is willing to risk full on Galactic War in pushing aside the Federation Fleet, there are various other groups that would like to see the Upstart race of Carbon based Mammals knocked down a peg from their high beast of burden.

So here we are, January 1st (for those of you that still use the old Gregorian Calendar of the year 2500. The Year is young, the smell of new years fire works still hangs in the air of the Colonial Capital, Fortuna, As it does in the air around Mother Earth, and undoubtedly several other Worlds across this big Galaxy.

Here's to the new Years, Folks...lets try not to kill our selves in some Galaxy wide extinction event, please, thanks.

General Information

Official Nation Name: The Guild of Trade
Population: 49.7 billion, dispersed across the galaxy.
Preferred Map Location: Sector 19

Political Information

Governance Type: Monarchy
Dominant Political Ideology: Feudal Capitalism

Military

Total Military Personnel: 2.3 million service members, primarily engaged in anti-piracy operations, protection details, and merchant escort.
Historical Record of your race/Civilization: The First Founders, the Hréinn are an old species. Supposedly, they witnessed the rise, fall, and rise again of the Vresh. They watched their homeworld be consumed by them, and wandered ever since, their once mirthful hearts turned to sorrow. The star-lanes were theirs for the taking, and though they settled many worlds, none were truly theirs. They were the first of the Guild. Their mastery of navigation, shipbuilding and the stars unparalleled for none but they have spent so long among the inky depths of the stars. The Guild was a necessity, then. The only way for a species barely clinging to life to survive. The first Houses were formed in this era, the Houses of Ornsgrave, Ljonel, and Belhest. These Houses, were conglomerations of firms, corporations and fleets that were all owned, and inherited by a single family line. They became royalty, of a sort. As the Guild grew, and incorporated more peoples, ships and concerns incorporated into the tapestry of exchange that the Guild had woven, more Houses began. Most, at first, were led by Hréinn, but as years passed the leadership of the Houses became diverse, with Nauchrten, Faeson, Abr, and most recently, within the last few centuries, Human Houses coming into existence.

Perhaps it was out of the lingering sorrow of the Hréinn that the greatest project ever undertaken by the Guild was planned, and executed throughout three centuries. The plan was a simple construction. The creation of a ring, just under one-hundred-sixty-thousand kilometers in diameter, a thousand kilometers in width, and a spin producing just above a single gravity. With massive shipyards and slipways all along the outer area, and kilometer tall walls holding in a pleasant oxygen atmosphere, it was a jewel in the crown of the Guild. Not only a technological and engineering masterwork, it was a statement to the galaxy at large. The Guild was no longer simply a massive company. It was a nation in all but name. Now, nearing a millennia old, the Empyrean Harbor, has become one of if not the center of galactic commerce, its many foundries making goods ranging from ships, to toasters, to small arms and cybernetics. On its surface eleven billion sentients live their lives like any other would. Along the great walls between the world and the void, vast sensor and communications arrays sit, beaming instructions to far-flung merchant flotillas. Ships come and go, exchanging cargo of all kinds.

Thrice, the Empyrean Harbor has been attacked. First by the Dread Lord Ul'Tarketh, a pirate with a fleet of five hundred ships, and once more by his son, Ul'Morgeth, seeking to avenge his father. Both times, vast armadas of mercenaries were hired, payed for with the seemingly bottomless wealth of the Guild. The Guild is no stranger to war. One could say conflict was what led to its creation. The third and final time war touched the Empyrean Harbor was not from some dread pirate, nor some alien menace, but from within. A century ago, there was a Fourth Great House, the House of Wyldred. You see, the Houses all those centuries ago declared a monarch, a ruler of the Guild. It was not hereditary, but upon a monarchs death a new one would be elected from the great Houses. The House Wyldred was in power and its Lord, Yvernes Tein raf Wyldred, who was also Monarch, died. His daughter, the ever ambitious Avangeline Tein raf Wyldred, the Usurper, and her House Guard marched into the College of Lords and dissolved it at gunpoint, claiming the title of Monarch by right of succession.

Her reign lasted a decade, and the Great Houses of Ornsgrave, Ljonel, and Belhest plotted against her and her allies in the Lesser Houses. They assembled a vast coalition of Lesser Houses, and poised themselves to strike at the heart of the Usurper, the Heigelen Palace. The event would later be known as the Midnight Coup. At midnight, the coalition struck. The simultaneous detonation of a hundred ships crippled the Usurper's fleet. Entire regiments of House Guard were deployed within minutes to every Usurper controlled post on the Harbor, slaughtering them without mercy. A full regiment of House Belhest's House Guard stormed the Heigelen Palace, and butchered their way to the Usurper herself, taking her captive. A broadcast went out to every ship, station and habitat in the galaxy under Guild control, declaring Gwynevere Fenn raf Belhest the rightful Monarch of the Guild, demanding confirmations of fealty, or threatening swift deaths. By the time dawn rose on the Heigelen Palace, the coup had ended. The coalition had won.

"Peace is profit," a common saying in the Guild goes, "But war is as well." Now, ninety years later, Monarch Gwynevere Fenn raf Belhest still rules, the long lived Hréinn's life coming to an end. She has lived for three and half-centuries, and her successor is yet to be decided. In these troubled times, the Guild cannot afford another Midnight Coup, but if the Great Houses cannot come to agreement, that may be only an inevitability.

Player Information

RP Sample: The Hréinn are just a mite shorter than the galactic average, a byproduct of the higher gravity of their long-dead and forgotten birthworld. This makes them a particularly convenient choice for hardsuit piloting. The Geind-IV EP/A stood at approximately three meters. With the pilot just above a meter-and-a-half on average, there was plenty of room for armor, maneuvering systems, sensors, countermeasures and even a lightweight shield systems. The Geind-IV was considered by many the pinnacle of Guild hardsuits, the only downfall being the exorbitant cost. To a Trade House, however, funding was very rarely an issue.

Four hours prior, the Lonely Moon, a wanted pirate vessel responsible for the destruction of four Guild haulers, had been spotted. After several hours of pursuit, the Guild patrol vessel Quinerre-raf-Sveirns fired a salvo of fusion lances, the Lonely Moon halting and complying to the demands of an inspection team boarding them. An hour later, Llwyllyn Weirn raf Mordyr hummed idly as the side doors opened, and the metal locking pins that strapped his suit to the interior of the transport disengaged. A quick diagnostic run later, the three meter tall, bright red mass of ceramic composite, sensor systems, and servomotors took its first two heavy steps onto the boat bay of the pirate vessel. He looked around at what surrounded him. Roughshod barricade of stolen cargo, heat signatures of craven pirates hidden behind them. The suits onboard computer designated priority targets. Beside him, another Geind-IV disengaged and stepped onto the boat bay landing zone, before the star of the show arrived. Fleihsljeutn Fleura Vern raf Halleidei was distinctly not in a hardsuit. Rather, she was dressed in a similarly red, as red was the color of a official Guild property. She wore an armored vac suit, an impulse rifle hanging limply from a strap as she produced a data pad. "This vessel is the Lonely Moon, yes?" She said, an unmistakable Guild lilt to her voice.

Weirn raf Mordyr smiled ever so slightly to himself, flicking the switch that would turn his hardsuit to combat power, and pre-charge his fusion mitrailleuse. "This is indeed the Lonely Moon! The Guild has no legal right for this inspection, we are an independent hauler!" Shouted one of the fools behind one of the tougher looking crates. Everyone knew that they were pirates, and the pirates knew that the Guild knew that they were pirates. It was a last minute bluff, and it was so absurd it made Weirn raf Mordyr chuckle for a split second.

"Thank you for that confirmation, sir," Vern raf Halleidei said, unmistakable mirth in her voice, "In accordance with Guild regulations, all crew of this vessel have been charged with four Acts of Piracy, please surrender your weapons, cargo, and vessel to the Guild, non-compliance will be met with immediate lethal force,"

"Go float yourse--" The presumable pirate captain never managed to finish his defiant cry, as in that moment he and his cover were turned into molten slag. The warbling scream of a fusion mitrailleuse cooling unmistakable. Llwyllyn Weirn raf Mordyr pivoted towards his next target, varied small arms fire ranging from lasers to impulse ballistics pinging off his shields. To his right, he briefly caught a glance of his fellow hardsuit expending a judicious amount of ordinance into a band of fleeing pirates. A high-pitched tone indicated he'd achieved lock, and he fired the coaxial impulse gun, spitting death in the general vicinity. Mincing pirates and crates alike. Out of the corner of his eye, he spotted a priority target--a pirate carrying a pilfered, outdated anti-armor launcher. Though old, it at the very least posed more of a threat then the sustained small arms fire. Weirn raf Mordyr pivoted, heavy footfalls echoing throughout the boat bay, before locking on with the massive, rapid-firing accelerator cannon. The pirate looked up, and in his last moments, felt fear. Weirn raf Mordyr depressed the firing stud, and the rapid, heavy thunder turned the man into biomass.

"Well," mused Vern raf Halleidei, "That's our job done. The cargo will be reclaimed and inventoried by another team, and the Quinerre-raf-Sveirns is also informing us that the bounties on these lot will be directed to our accounts. So, according to them, drinks are on us next time we stop at a port,"

"The bastards,"

Historical Record of your race/Civilization:
At the dawn of the 23rd century, Mankind found itself in a golden age. Post-scarcity promised human civilization limitless potential. As ever, however, man's own hubris threatened to undo the previous generation's progress with every passing decade. For centuries, the population of the human race had ballooned with each new scientific discovery further extending the lifetime and youth of the people. But this only exacerbated the internal chaos of civilization. Millions upon millions of persons crammed into cityscapes, scrambling for resources despite the nearly untapped potential and apparently limitless riches that the stars promised. The colonization of space barely alleviated this issue, and infighting among mankind was nigh unstoppable as conflicts broke out even inside the more civilized and united nation-states. The truth was, though the boon of technology proved a blessing for the lives of man, it did not bring them purpose. The weight of countless billions of proletarians sagged on society, straining it to the very limit. None were most troubled by this situation than the intellectual scientist caste, which had been developing for centuries as the priorities of education and technological progress shifted from the masses to better-off individuals who were more inclined to pursue science and engineering as a lifetime career. These men saw the troubles of mankind and despaired at its doom. Using their technology, they sought their way out of a disaster they thought sure to come...

Among the most remarkable advances in technology which brought great boons to mankind was genetic engineering. By altering the base genetic data which would determine the very physical form of mankind, countless sufferings could be wiped away from civilization. Though costly, one who became subject to genetic meddling could find themselves stronger, faster, smarter, and generally less susceptible to disease and illness. Crops could be grown in ever larger quantities with higher yields. Lost or damaged organs could be regrown without any risk of rejection. These and more benefits characterized genetic engineering at the time, and it was considered man's greatest achievement. A cabal of radical scientists sought to use this technology to alter the very fabric of human genetics, along with a little societal engineering, to once and for all end the suffering of humanity because of its excessive growth and stagnation. They believed strongly that mankind must change if it wished to survive. Alas, this was not to be. They were dedicated, but not in the good graces of the super-wealthy who controlled society. The lame masses, after all, were good consumers who mindlessly supported their vast fortunes. Politicians of the times, who ran on shallow campaigns that appealed to the many "moral" compasses of the average voter, decried the effort as unethical and unnatural. Change, it seemed, was not welcomed by mankind. In spite of the inevitable doom that paranoid science kept warning humanity about, the immediate cost and unknown threat of change ensured that such ideas would only ever be popular among the scientists. Even among the scientific community, such scheming was deplored as unwise. Without popular support, mass genetic alterations would be unethical and likely cause yet more division and chaos within humanity. Even at such a level of development, scientists were unsure if mass genetic alterations would even work, much less behave as they expected. The pessimistic predictions of the radical eugenicists may in fact not come to pass as they warned. Slowly, the movement died as one by one the radical members of the scientific community softened their views or faded from the intellectual space.

Eventually only one scientist remained, defiant of the apparent ease with which humanity seemed to accept its fate. She believed that she alone knew how humanity could survive, nay, thrive in so boundless an era of possibility. It wasn't long before she came to the conclusion that society was simply doomed as it was. Instead, she must start anew. Using what resources she had available to her, the lone scientist collected about herself the most advanced AI available to humanity at the time, a veritable archive of data on technology and engineering, and advanced robotics that would be useful for her mission. With this in hand, she acquired a star ship that would take her to the very edge of mankind's expanse in the galaxy, whereupon she left the human race as she knew it behind. Now alone, she searched the unknown for a garden of eden to start humanity anew. Having found a suitable star system, she began terraforming the second planet to house a new civilization. She called this planet Vexia, and hence became the First Vexian.

Her plan was simple: humanity as it was is too fractured and self-indulgent to ever let progress last. What she required was a people who could find no difference among themselves to bicker about. Not like the race wars of old, fought by factions of men who believed themselves blood brothers only to turn upon each other once each foe had been struck down. The new Vexians would not be so weak. The First Vexian drew upon her own genome for the template, her new civilization would be made entirely of clones. Each individual would know that their sisters are ever faithful and competent as they were. They would not fall to infighting as man before them had. In such a society, direct democracy could flourish as all could be trusted to make the right decision, though mockingly of such a concept a society of clones could only ever vote unanimously. The stale monotony of so singular a race was not lost on the First Vexian, and she drew upon her technology to craft a solution. Though externally quite the same, each Vexian would be slightly, imperceptibly unique. Genetic diversity would be kept by randomizing select portions of the genetic code so that their greatest strength could not be made weakness. The appearances of the Vexians would be no different between individuals, but by chance one or two may be more resistant to a yet-unknown disease or illness than others.

The First Vexian took the opportunity to further improve the Vexians over their human counterparts. Strength and reflexes were tweaked and generally improved. Aging was slowed as much as possible, giving a Vexian a theoretical lifespan in the centuries, with the benefit of medical technology to extend that yet further without appearing to have aged a day. This came at the consequence of an absurdly long childhood, but the First Vexian saw no reason to let this weigh the civilization down. Each clone would be, from inception, grown in growth tanks until they came of suitable age to be trained into society. They would emerge from the growth tanks after 6 years at a level of development roughly equivalent to a human's biological age of 14. From here, they would be implanted with cookie-cutter personalities, hypnotically and synesthesiatically writing in a basic psyche which would take the place of the first decade of the lives a normal human might have. Personalities are allowed to diverge past this point, the minuscule differences in brain chemistry and experiences producing personas which, to an experienced observer, will appear to be unique individuals. This newborn Vexian is known as a "Neophyte", and represents the closest thing to a child the Vexians have. Neophytes are produced in batches, never having been conceived by parents or any similar family mechanism. Indeed, the very concept of family is swept away, replaced by the more apt formation of clade. Batches of new Vexians are ordered by the government, the gestalt of Vexians and their voting mechanics and a management AI system that directs the whole of Vexian civilization. During inception, genes and personalities are tweaked such that randomly, in any given batch of Vexians, the necessary desires and ambitions are formed to produce the very professionals that the civilization requires at the time. This means that each Vexian will, by their own accord and in pursuit of their own happiness, choose a career that society requires. Undaunted by the apparent lack of free will, young Vexian Neophytes spend their first 20 years of life outside a tube learning of their world as a human might. Basic language is already known to them through hypnosis, but skills and muscle memory are built through experience. The scientific method, history, mathematics, and other useful knowledge is trained into Neophytes as a young human might be schooled. Upon reaching maturity, fully grown and stocked with skills, an Adult Vexian is promptly drafted into the military to serve their due to society. After completing a military service, the Vexians are released into their civilization to choose their own path and career, living and working in Vexian society as any other intelligent species would.

Various other differences with humans result from the unique means of inception that Vexians employ. The means of creation being divorced from biology and the family unit rendered extinct, all Vexians are rendered sterile. The act of reproduction is now best left mentioned as merely a recreational activity, nothing more, though the means of traditional reproduction are preserved and may be reactivated with the right medical treatments in an instance of an emergency. Such matters are, however, never discussed as the odds of such an event being necessary are astronomical. This apparent lack of a family or even romantic partners is off-putting to non-Vexians, who find that despite the alien upbringing a Vexian is fairly functional in social interactions. In spite of the acclimatization of the Vexians to regular society, their often very similar personalities and near identical appearances make dealing with more than one Vexian confusing at best. On occasion, one might be lucky enough to discover a Vexian with a much more differentiated personality, an archetype beyond the bland normal drone one might encounter for better or worse.

Vexian technology is considered on-par or better than typically found with other human political factions. Vexians are noted for possessing fairly advanced energy direction technologies, manifesting in a kind of mastery over field technology in the form of active camouflage, ship shielding, and holograms. Artificial intelligence is also a notable feature of Vexian technological ability, as their mastery of the human brain enables them to craft fairly excellent digital reproductions of a Vexian mind for use in their systems, though this is intentionally varied based on intellectual need.

In general, Vexians are sometimes considered sociopathic, choosing to keep communications and interactions with non-Vexians at a minimum. The official political entity of the Vexian Confederacy chooses to remain isolationist where possible, remaining within its borders in order to leverage its smaller population for defense and economics. Vexia prefers to operate outside its borders through the use of Mercenaries, organized as "Free Companies" of varying size and composition who are hired out to entities both political and economic in order to see out desirable ends. Free Companies may be drawn from active duty personnel in Vexia's military, from units as small as Guard Platoons to entire formations of warships and everything in between. Indeed, a rebellion on the fringes of human space may be surprised to find elite Vexian Commandoes crushing their every operation despite Vexia itself being quite distant and uncaring.

On the whole, there is little to fear from the Vexians. They are a small people, dwarves among the giants that stride the galaxy. The First Vexian died a content woman, having spawned a new civilization she hoped would avenge humanity even as it yet lived. It has been 200 years since the birth of the Vexian Confederacy in a backwater system, and it would be many centuries yet before it meets its reckoning.

Alitheia in SPAAAACCCEEE!!!

General Information

Official Nation Name: The Seran Federation
Population: Idk 15-40 billion
Preferred Map Location: 10

Political Information

Governance Type: Unitary Republic, with representatives from each world forming a senate and a governor's council.
Dominant Political Ideology: Usually liberal/libertarian views. It's a relatively loose coalition of worlds.

Military

Total Military Personnel: Around 5.4 million. 3.1 million make up the Colonial Militia, 2 million make up the Federal Marines, 5,000 are in the Special Forces, there are 51 Immortals, and about 362,000 in the Federal Navy
Historical Record of your race/Civilization: The Seran people at one point were colonists. Their homeland, after achieving expansive stellar territories, noted the world of Seranos for its highly livable biosphere. The world was almost nearly covered in fresh water oceans, temperate forests and rolling plains, with only a few mountain ranges to blemish its beautiful surface. The world was perfect. However, as do all great nations, the civilization that originally sent the Serans fell and all contact was lost between the colony and the rest of the empire. The Serans fell into a dark age. They subsequently spent the next six-thousand years falling apart and then rebuilding and re-learning the technology that was lost to them from the now near-mythic civilization that brought them here. But now, after three centuries of rebuilding Seranos and exploring their home system, the Seran Federation has taken the next five centuries and expanded to a score of systems and now has done to other worlds what Seranos once was: they colonized an expanse of 23 other worlds, thus developing the Federation into a power in its home constellation of stars and systems. None would dare strike against the colony-that-once-was now that it was a fledgling empire.

Nevermind, here's a repost of the Abr application just as a reminder.

Alitheia in SPAAAACCCEEE!!!

General Information

Official Nation Name: Abr Networked Worlds
Population: 29.7 Billion.
Preferred Map Location: 15 - 16

Political Information

Governance Type: Futarchic Council
Dominant Political Ideology: Collective Futarchy

Military

Total Military Personnel: 742,500,000, roughly 2.5% of the Abr population.
Historical Record of your race/Civilization: (Home system: Nasc & Aesc with Beac in the center, Beac and it's captured asteroid moons, Homestar and Asteroid Disk with Nesi in the midst of it, the Homesystem as a whole) (Crude diagram of an Abr's biology made in MS Paint) The Abr are an aquatic silicone-based sentient species hailing from the Jovian moon of Nasc. They are also called Silics by a majority of the galactic community. Abr dwell within the oceans of their homeworld, and could generally live anywhere in the ocean. The Abr preferred the cold depths as it increased the conductivity of electricity in their brains, allowing higher neurological processes. They maneuvered through the water with their wire-like tentacles. The bulbous sensory organs which covered their bodies allowed them to detect vibrations, various forms of radiation, radio waves, and electrical currents. A small organ located in between the eight tentacles allows them to communicate with others of their kind via radio transmissions. To sustain themselves, the Abr utilize leaf-like organs which extend from the gaps between the sensory bulbs. These "feeding leaves" capture solar energy and small plankton-like creatures.

The Abr, in their cold computing state when in lower temperatures, realized the value that the surface of Nasc held for them. Already they had attempted to reach the surface and were able to gaze upon it, but they were unable to survive due to their weak skeletal structure. Many generations passed, and none still made it to the surface. Many more generations passed, and the Abr had developed a stronger skeletal structure which allowed them to survive on land. The atmosphere was much thinner than a world that would be considered habitable by other sentient lifeforms, but due to their silicoid nature, they had no use for the mainly oxygen-based atmosphere. Abr societies took on a duality nature, one contingent of Abr would remain on the surface for its resources, while the other contingent would remain in the cold depths of the oceans for the technological advancement of their race.

The main drive of Abr civilization was two things, metal and technology. The Abr were careful not to raze or scorch the earth of their opponents else they take the risk of harming the other's knowledge. It is due to this that much of the history of the Abr is in incredible condition. Metalworking was unable to be performed in their native oceans, further increasing the value on the surface. Religion always remained a minor force, for the cold undersea thinkers would always find some way to disprove the beliefs in a supernatural entity that created the world. Few religious institutions were able to gain power over the Abr and they usually never lasted very long. Abr civilization progressed as normal until the revolutionary day that they invented the radio transmitter. They themselves were able to transmit radio signals, but they never understood how they did it. When an inventor and biologist known as Irqs discovered the functions of the Abr radio organ, they found a way to artificially create them with machines.

The Abr Industrial revolution came to a start with Irqs discovery, and now that factories were producing everything they could need at an exponential rate, the Abr looked to the stars more than they had been before. They gazed upwards with grand mirrors, looking upon Aesc, Beac, and the grand asteroid disk that surrounded their sun. They would be colonized in the future, acting as the first steps for their path to becoming a major power in the galaxy. Many generations later, the information age had rolled in. And the Abr saw space as the last frontier to conquer. It would be a much greater period of time before they would unite into a world-spanning union, but that time was greatly cut short by the existence of a hostile asteroid inbound to their world. Few of these kinds of asteroids existed, but they would bring about mass-extinction level events. This one in particular was around five kilometers in length, and nearly four in width.

The ensuing mass panic resulted in what would originally become a temporary alliance. All of the greatest minds of Nasc were put to work to devise a way to launch a spacecraft that would detonate nuclear explosives in order to terminate the asteroid. When the solution for advanced chemical rockets was found, and the delivery mechanism for nuclear explosives worked out, resources from across the globe were donated to the cause. The hostile asteroid was destroyed, and the Abr could rest easily knowing that mass-extinction was no longer right around the corner. Many leading political, economic, and social leaders proposed that this would be an ideal time for a unification event. They were correct. The Abr transitioned into a Futarchic Council. From that point onwards it grew into a stable organization, putting down rebellions and insurgencies. Nasc was united, but Aesc, the Beac Objects, Beac itself, and newly discovered Nesi were the next to go.

A Von Neumman Probe was launched from the revolutionary orbital factory of Nasc, inbound on a course to Aesc. In the months it took for the probe to reach Aesc, the orbital infrastructure of Nasc greatly expanded. The probe landed on Aesc, it constructed a Communications Array to maintain contact with Nasc. In due time, a colony ship would arrive at Aesc, with the Probe having already constructed a decent base to build a colony upon. Aesc would then serve as a staging point for the further exploration and colonization of Beac and it's captured asteroid moons. The same Von Neumann Probe was launched beforehand, then the colony ship would come along to each of the four moons and deposit the colonists. Beac would remain uncolonized until the later discovery of anti-gravity systems. Even then, extensive colonization of Beac remained limited until advanced building methods were found.

The asteroid disk was the second-to-last colonized object in the home system. The Probe had to wait a much longer period of time before the colony ship would arrive, and by the time that it did arrive it had already secured a sizeable portion of territory in the belt for use by the Abr. Nesi was already marked by the probe, and thus, the Era of Colonization ended. The whole process had taken a total of nearly two-hundred years, due to the constraints of ship-speed, light lag, and population growth. By this point in time, the Abr fell into a period of prosperity, population growth, and technological advancement. However, the final frontier had not yet been conquered, and the Abr sought out more. The coldest minds of the Abr Networked Worlds developed the Aolt Drive, which would allowed faster-than-light travel between solar systems. From then on the Abr population would explode as the colonization spree erupted once again. Those days are long past now, the Abr Networked Worlds sits in the galaxy as a major power in the field. With the state of the Cradle of Humanity descending into worsened tensions, some factions wishing to knock mankind down a peg and a theoretical galactic mass-extinction event, the Abr must remain as vigilant as ever in a galaxy descending into chaos.

Player Information

RP Sample: The Abr exploration vessel exploded into a new solar system, heat rushing into the shields. Standard procedure as always, let the heat sink in, wait for it to cool, then move onwards into the system. Probes were launched from the spherical vessel's dotted launch tubes, covering more ground and gathering data over a large area. The main vessel, however, was interested not in the systems Oort cloud but in the gravitational anomaly detected in a relatively empty part of the binary solar system. No planets, spacecraft, dwarf planets or moons were seen by the ship's sensors. Strange. The vessel moved forward, pulled by a projected gravitational singularity. The sensors were going wild with the data streaming in from the anomaly. High metal content, heavy radiation, and the obvious gravitational fields. The Abr who captained the vessel was almost entranced by the find. There hadn't been a worthwhile anomaly in weeks, so this was a refreshing one. The captain lowered the temperature of their chamber for this and alerted all other crewmembers to do the same.

"Interest. Possible mark of old race? Experimental gravitational spacetime device?"

In case of danger, the Probes always went first. Another probe was ejected from a launch tube and made a beeline to the anomaly ahead. Live data from the Probe streamed back to the Abr vessel as it continued on its course. The Probe was nearing the point of contact with the anomaly, and soon enough, the Abr were treated to an unexpected surprise. The gravitational fields dampened in a specific part of the anomaly, before being nullified completely. Then, an attracting force overpowered the probe and pulled it closer to the anomaly. The anomaly was confirmed to be a hexagonal station approximately half a kilometer in width and height. The probe was drawn into an entry port. The live connection with the probe stuttered slightly, but it did not give in. The probe continued on. The data feed revealed a cramped passageway out of the hangar that the probe had been pulled into. Moments later the probe opened into a vast computer room, databases worth of information stored within. The freezing temperatures would be perfect for any kind of silicoid lifeform. In the center of the room, there was a computer that held a variety of stations for plugging in. The probe scanned them, then the built-in nano-core adjusted it's computational connectors so that it would match the plug-in stations.

The probe connected, and the Abr vessel's database was awash with a wealth of information. The shipboard AI and it's Sub-Intelligences immediately went to work at sorting it out and organizing it. The anomaly was confirmed to contain the massive overview of a now-extinct alien race, confirming the captain's original theory that it was indeed the mark of an old race. the overview contained history, biology, society, technology, culture, and their unfortunate extinction. This species had not been able to leave their solar system before being wiped out by an aggressive and unknown entity, likely a rogue self-replicating drone network. However, the old race had a self-replicating drone in storage that survived the sweeping attack of the hostile entities. It had limited resources at it's disposal and only a matter of time before it would give in to multiple system errors due to battle damage. It constructed this time capsule in hopes that, someday, an alien race would find it and preserve their memory. Despite how Abr did not usually feel heavy emotions, the captain was almost immediately saddened by the demise of this old race.

"Mourning. The Mark lived, the Creator died."

It signaled the location of this system and the identified anomaly to the Abr Networked Worlds before moving on to finish surveying the system, then warping to the next one.

I'm pretty sure I have an application in a distant past OOC forum for this... Just came out of a several year effective hiatus.
Or at least something very similar to this. The application form and map looks semi-familiar.

So based on what I am reading in the gdoc, shields are basically massive energy based heat sinks (modular or bubble shields?) and as far as I can tell they only interfere with energy (laser/plasma?/whateverelse) based weapons, and there is no indication about their effects on kinetic weapons, if any at all.

Also how big and clunky are FTL drives? Can they fit on smallcraft (which I would assume would also be making smaller jumps due to heat dump limits, but that still allows for raiders to hit and run on smallcraft and the likes)? (and if they can then it suddenly turns into a tele-bombing match)

Lastly with the the way it is described, it sounds like the FTL and shields are linked where basically the shields are diverted energy from inefficient FTL technology (where as completely streamlined FTL tech wouldn't have that extra energy left over, allowing for smoother jumps and probably a much easier controlled shields).

Oh...shit...outside interest.

It's been so long.

At the moment we are sorta...retconning and editing parts mostly because i had no idea about hos to run this. You're more then welcome to app still.

Right, shields, FTL drives, and how to fit them.

Generally FTL drives tend to get as small as your average Big Mac Engine, this rather small size compared to say, a Dreadnought's FTL drive (which is as large as said Big Mac). The trade off is that the smallest Drives are rather labor intensive and short ranged.

Historical Record of your race/Civilization: The Ferrans are a species of feline humanoids. They look like Humans, but have cat ears, cat fangs (teeth), cat claws and cat eyes. They were organized into clans, each led by a chief, and their homeworld is Ferra I, located in the Ferra System. They were a primitive species for many, many years until they started to develop technology and unite their respective tribes. The many wars the tribes waged on each others have usually been common, but ended up becoming extremely devastating, thus unity was preferred. The "Council of Tribes" was set up to represent the tribes of the Ferran race and also guide the entire race as a whole.

Upon expansion across and outside the Ferra System, the Ferran Empire developed an ideology that combines it's imperialistic attitude with a sense of ethnocentrism, viewing the Ferrans as a race that is superior towards other races, both tribal and non-tribal. They do other stuff than just invading such as trade, diplomacy and science. Nonetheless, they are still a militant race thirsting for blood ever since their old, primitive days on their homeworld.

Oh, semi-trucks.

Also two ideas. Make shields much more effective against energy based weapons and less effective against ballistic weapons, but ship armor + maneuverability deals with ballistics much better then energy weapon. Have shield variants, namely a cloaking shield which really just absorbs the energy and has it stowed away, thus making the ship effectively disappear (limiting factor being energy storage capacity before you have to drop all the heat or risk meltdown or worse, also an energy weapon hitting such shields could cause instant critical failure due to overload).

And yeah, teleporting bombs sounds like a very good anti-capital ship tactic. Nuclear (fusion) warhead, computer, and a 1-shot short range Drive, put them together and you have the ability to simply drop a (more likely multiple for reinsurance) bomb in the middle of the target. If the energy needs to be leached off before jump, have that be part of the launch station, if it's after arrival, well you're not going to care about it so much at that point.

PS: When you were talking about a Big Mac the only thing I could think about was the Mc Donald's one.

The Abr, being a reclusive lot, were given a proper red carpet.

A Section of the Local Space station, Center point Station, was cleared and gussied up and clean for the upcoming arrivals.

With the arrival of the diplomatic envoy local security and airspace would also be upped, part in due to this meeting, and to the general alert given to all Colonial Military assets to shift in to readiness.

They would be told to break off from the escort and dock at their pleasure, offering 3 different ports for their choice. Once inside the would be met by a diplomatic team and Colonial Marines in full dress Uniforms.

The Cruiser and it's four destroyers kept moving for a while before coming to a halt, launching the trapezoidal diplomatic craft. Inside it was the singular Abr diplomat, adjusting their temperature and receiving the simulated translator data. There were a total of four Mechanoid Bodyguards surrounding them. The craft shot out at high speeds before slowing down to a cruise, coming to an even slower glide at Port 2. The landing gear extended, and the Abr's hydrocarbon chamber was drained. Once it opened, the bodyguards came out first, allowing the relatively slow Abr to make it's way. It's body was around two feet in length, and it's manipulators at three.

Alitheia in SPAAAACCCEEE!!!

General Information

Official Nation Name: N/A
Population: 1
Preferred Map Location: 11 (totally the best place to be, yup)

Political Information

Governance Type: Communist Dictatorship?
Dominant Political Ideology: Protect the last Chizn

Military

Total Military Personnel: 1?
Historical Record of your race/Civilization: Well before the AI was made. It's creators -- the Chizn--, shortly after developing FTL travel, unfortunately made first contact with barbaric warmongers. The war was brutal and with the creators at a disadvantage, it slowly became evident they would loose. However, not giving up, they turned their focus from throwing soldiers at the enemy to throwing AI controlled machines at the enemy, but even that didn't work as they slowly succumbed to the relentless attacks. Finally, they began to really turtle down and turn each of their planets into bastions with orbital platforms bristling with weapons, and even the begin to make rudimentary planetary shields. By the time the homeworld was under siege, the Chizn had all but mastered the art of desperate defenses, and their crown jewel defense was the most advanced AI they could manage to create, fully keyed to make it so that the entire planet's defenses were impeccable. Their plan worked, but not well enough. The invaders eventually managed to overwhelm the planetary defenses and conquer their way through the Chizn.

What neither the enemy nor the Chizn knew, though, was that the AI had known it could not win out and had already managed to make an escape plan. Using automated machinery, it managed to make a backup location which was well hidden enough that nobody else knew about it. It also took advantage of a loophole in its directives. One of the prime directives was to "Protect the Chizn and ensure that as many Chizn survives as possible" which, in deciding that it was a Chizn person, managed to make it so that so long as it exhausted all other options where more Chizn would survive, it would be able to live on even if the war was lost. And thus it lay in its tomb, dormant, for twenty three years before finally rebooting (in order to shake off any potential of being found via energy detection scans). Seeing that the invaders had long since conquered the planet, it began to work on once more securing its hold, using machinery it had managed to stow in its secret bunker and slowly it began to make a deep underground complex spanning the planet.

After many years of preparation underground, and slowly taking over the enemy's own computers above, it sprang into action. Anything which was controlled by a computer was controlled by it, granting it access to the enemy's entire information system, as well as most of their planetary defenses and ships, which quickly got rid of their crew. Simultaneously, completely constructed war machines burst out of their hidden underground hangers and began what amounted to a complete, and utter, one sided slaughter. After securing the planet without even a squeak getting out, it began to quickly re-purpose technology on the surface and fortify its gains. From there it turned to a blitzkrieg surprise attack campaign, throwing the enemy's own ships at them, and catching them off guard before either subverting the ship or blasting it to scrap for recycling. This continued for several years until it had completely destroyed the enemy, who themselves had wiped out three other budding civilizations. Having felt satisfied that it had suitably taken revenge for the Chizn people, a feeling it hadn't realized it had before, it began to fortify the worlds it had and mass produce space ships, all for the sake of defending the last Chizn.

Alitheia in SPAAAACCCEEE!!!

General Information

Official Nation Name: Raktio
Population: 32 Billion
Preferred Map Location: 27 & 30 (though a lot of presence in the neighboring sectors)

Political Information

Governance Type: The government is a Stratocratic Meritocracy, current headed by High Admiral Korrvek
Dominant Political Ideology: Spread across the stars and lay claim to whatever territory we can so long as we can reasonably hold it and search for new hunting grounds.

Military

Total Military Personnel: on the order of 2 million combat personnel, however nearly everybody is in the military in one way or another since it serves as the government, most research is done through the military (even if the research in question doesn't seem like it's military related, which it almost always ends up being so), mass transportation and trade are a logistics division (a very large one)
Historical Record of your race/Civilization: Early ra'tzekio were a hunter gatherer people who survived in the dense jungles of their heavy world. Evolved from predators, they quickly learned that tools make for the best means of killing their prey and securing their own safety. Late in the invention of fire due to a lack of need for it more often then not aside from the more polar civilizations they had a long lull in their technological development, but none the less eventually fire became common place due to the fact that cooked food tastes better (and had much more proteins and nutritions available due to that being the way chemistry works) and metalwork became more common in the polar regions where crystwood rarely grew. Because of that, technology spread from the polar regions and into the more central regions since metal has many more applications then crystwood due to the way it is worked with rather than carved out. Naturally, over time they developed better and better technology and thousands of years later figured out how to make FTL space ships.

The space bound ra'tzekio eventually broke away from the homeworld and began to establish their own hierarchies, however the High Admiral of the homeworld at the time would not have it and producing a fleet of warships, proceeded to "get the other planets and colonies back in line" often via a show of superior force and then winning a personal duel against any who didn't fall in line (and for those who didn't accept the duel, telepedoing their capital ships or bombarding their planetbound base). Once reuniting the race, he went about to ensure that the the empire was streamlined for efficiency and ranking officials were kept in check for in case they were to overstep their bounds, large enough celestial objects were designated either resource worlds or life worlds and set in a planned path based on which one they were. The Stratocratcy of Raktio already covers a massive area of space, much of which has been either industrialized with automated machines or terramophed worlds with massive deadly biomes which the ra'tzekio often reside in. The ra'tzekio remain united to this day under the military government with a strong space presence and constant seeking for new hunting grounds beyond their controlled space.

Other
The ra'tzekio naturally psionically enhance their bodies and their senses, making them tougher, faster and stronger than they already appear. They also can also literally sense fear, and aggression as well a possess a psionic danger sense, allowing them to react to an attack, possibly before it's even being acted out.

They come from a planet with about 2.1 G's and as such their bodies are built for heavy gravity receptively find 1 G extremely light.

Final note: They have a material called Crystwood which is native to their home planet (and is notoriously had to grow outside of the the jungles of it) which, when treated right, works just as good as a modern power weapon (in a melee) if not better at times, due to it's unique crystaline structure, carbon tube nanowire fibers and the fact that it is psionically reactive.
