The country on Madande was once a French Colony, In 1960 it was granted its independence from France. It’s first head of state was President Hyacinthe M’bako a pro-French and anti-communist politician who'd gotten the Nickname "Injami" meaning "Wild Dog" in IwaNajya. He was a proponent of Françafrique, and he took the Franc and the French policy that came with taking it. Almost immediately the country fell into conflict, members of the hard line Committee of Peasants and Workers of Soudan Ouest. It was a low level conflict for most of its existence. But in 1965 CPWSO forces captured the town of Abemdej. The Siege of Abemdej killed nearly 7,000 people and displaced over 45,000. It was the deadliest battle seen in the country and to M'bako only showed him how far the communist were willing to go. In 1968 Peace Agreements were signed between the M’bako Government and the CPWSO, the hope was that they would be marginalized within the political system and relegated to irrelevance as a result. elections with the CPWSO were held in 1970 to little fanfare. Bardou Kissa won the election for the communist and the peaceful transition of power was honored. Kissa’s administration redistributed lands and instituted hardline marxist policies. His policies helped to expand the semi-nomadic Naufhaja people’s pastoral lands. However farming lands in the south occupied by Gimbendi, Najya, and Chekinwa people were forcibly redistributed. His policy of “Nouveau Tribalisme” sought to create communal farms based on the old tribal subsistence farming tradition.
In 1973 several military mutinies affect the army regarding pay and protest to Kissa’s policies. Naufhaja soldiers loyal to Kissa were used to suppress the mutineers. Forces in the South rallied around a junior officer named Nathanaël Gbagbundi. He lead these forces from the southern town of Jindani up to the capital of Euntebi. A war broke out with battles at Yabjina and Boubou being the largest and deadliest of the war. The loyalist forces were broken at these battles. Gbagbundi marched into the capital and his forces arrested Kissa. Kissa was given a show trial and executed, Gbagbundi assumed the presidency. His presidency was supported by the French with continuous financial support.
French Mining Company Sessevalle Mining made big inroads into the country's mineral rich eastern region. Initially Iron and Aluminum were discovered. These finds helped lead to the nations first mining boom. however by the 1990’s mining in the region had slowed down. This was due to a combination of the quality of the ore and the cost effectiveness of mining in the area. The virgining economy hit a slump as the mining industry stagnated. However with the rise of the smartphone industry deposits of Palladium, Cobalt, and Tin were further explored. Early surveys put the country as one of the most mineral rich countries in the region. They were also some of the most minimal rich ores on the continent. The ease of extracting these minerals and the increased funding to infrastructure made the profit margins ever larger and lucrative.
Gbagbundi has remained as president since the coup. His policies have been linked to stable economic growth however with a history of human rights abuses, high illiteracy rates, and a history of child labor violations. His country has seen more tension as the economy has seen financial woes coming from the value of the West African Franc. As part of the CFA Monetary System Madande held only 30% of its wealth, with the majority of its wealth being held within the French Treasury and would only allow credit at a fixed rate. When the financial crisis hit the government could not get credit to sustain itself. It was after this Gbagbundi has pushed for leaving the CFA and adopting their own currency and Gbagbundi has said he’d use the military to evict French mining companies from the country. However the Naufhaja have been more than willing to overthrow the current regime as they’ve been left out of much of the economic and political growth within the country.
French President Sarkozy visited the country in order to negotiate with Gbagbundi. French Defense Minister Hervé Morin met with Defense Minister of Madande Irénée-Marie Sissomariko as well as Generals Unaru, and M’hidi Ahmed. Morin and M’hidi Ahmed would meet the longest. Later that month, a series of mutinies within the army commanded by M’hidi Ahmed occurred. Eventually more mutinies would occur predominantly in the East and center of the country. The units under M’hidi Ahmed’s command would break off and form the Allied Democratic Forces of the M’zab (ADFM). Within the day the other mutinous armies broke off and formed the New Army of Young Patriots and Freedom Fighters (NAJPCL) under the command of Sub-Lieutenant Abraham Inyki. The army in the capital was split, many were split on section by section basis. Upon the announcement of the new rebelling forces fighting broke out within the main garrison in the capital, Army Base Euntebi. ADFM and NAJPCL militants storm important facilities within the capital, ADFM forces entered from the north and destroyed telecommunication facilities. NAJPCL forces assaulted the Parliament and the Presidential Palace. The Attack on Parliament is a staggering success, the rebelling forces stormed the building which parliament resided in and arrested or killed all 400 members of Parliament. However the assault on the Presidential Palace went awry. The forces tasked with this were able to breach the outer walls but came up against the crack forces of the Presidential Guard. However within a few hours the presidential palace was taken and Gbagbundi was killed in the assault. Another target, the Ministry of Defense was attacked but defended by members of the Lion Force. These forces were able to defend the ministry of defense. Defense Minister Sissomariko survived the incident and remained in the capital. With news that the Prime Minister and much of the cabinet were dead or arrested, Sissomariko proclaimed himself President of the state. Now the capital lay in an orgy of gun fire and violence.
We’ve been in Euntebi only six months maybe. We rotated in to replace the last group. However We’d all probably been in country six or seven times over the years. I’d personally been all over doing security work for Sessevalle. We were contracted through Alexon Defense Strategies. I’d done work in the capital before, one of the most modern cities on the whole continent. Men and women dressed in designer attire, Alexander Amosu suites, and Chopard Sunglasses. However in the east it was a different story. I remember helping to train some Paramilitary Forces who would guard the mining communities. Those people wore shit like Chicago Bears Super Bowl XLI Champion shirts, raggedy pants, and recycled tire sandals. We walked passed the mine entrance during training and saw a small kid, maybe six or seven years old. He was smashing ore with an old rusty piece of machinery. He had a pile of ore to his left, and a pile of broken ore on his right. He had no clothes except for some tattered old shorts. The wealth disparity was immense and unfathomable.
We had done security for Marcel Lurçat, the CFO for Sessevalle who operated regularly in country. We would also help train presidential guard units from time to time of things like CQB training. They were the lucky ones and got things like the FAMAS and Steyr AUG PARAs. The rest of the Army, depending on if they were in the good graces of the President would get anything from SG 542’s, FAMAS’s, Tavors, and Micro Galils. Others, especially in the north were out fitted with old Commbloc surplus, I’d seen some soldiers in units walking around with shit like AMD-65’s, Norinco CQs, BM59’s, and even old MAS-49’s with old AKM pistol grips drilled into the stock. Things really were in shambles. Yet when you've got money coming in like you've never seen before, it can make these things subside within your conscience. Sometimes you’ll remember when money was a scarce thing. The feeling of making €12,000 a month could make you look over these sorts of things. It's easy to overlook them as others, I need the money to provide for my family back home. These people were not my people, their issues were not my issues, these people were not my people.
Our rotations in started to get more frequent after the financial crash. We'd go in and help keep the peace. First we did security work at the french embassy in Euntebi. Then after that short contract we transferred east to protect vital mining infrastructure. Some guys would come around and try to throw petrol bombs at the equipment, usually you could flash your rifle and they'd run off. Things never got to intense and once we finished training we went back to company headquarters in Euntebi. Around the November time frame we got an influx of corporate security details. Director of Regional Operation Jean-Marie Duchesnay would show up and meet with members of the military on a bi-weekly basis until the middle of december. Then you had the French coming through on their diplomatic missions. We were not privy to those conversations, however knowing the French, knowing Sarkozy you could tell something was afoot.
About a month later things blew up. In the course of a day we had a series of mutinies. Gun fire in the streets. We were sent to guard the Headquarters. Teams Berthe, Irma, and Suzanna were sent on "Security Missions" around the city. We held the HQ that whole day, we saw a few looters and men with guns. They stayed away usually making B-Lines to other streets. We weren't given an evacuation notice even when the armies started entering the city. The next day the air in the building was tense. We were not told why but that morning the whole of the leftover staff were burning documents in bins on the roof, and smashing up all the HDD's they could find in the building. Head of Local Operations Hasan Huceni, Chief Financial Officer Marc Gamalin, and Chief Logistics Officer Pau Vœxneau had all left. We all new what was going on, no one needed to spell it out. After we finished clearing out the building we were briefed on what we needed to do. Section Irma was being held by Government Forces at Toufaghani Prison. We needed to rescue them do to them holding "sensitive information " we were even given the all clear to put their lives at risk if no other options were viable. We had until tomorrow morning or else we'd be stuck here. The plan was to get Section Irma and then haul ass to Kihntanbi Regional Airport so we could evacuate to Djemah before getting back to Europe. That gave us roughly 17 hours to get all this done, while the city was devolving. If we wanted to see our families again we really had no choice.
As you’ve read above. Shits hit the fan. You are tasked with RPing as a member of a Private Military Contractor. You were involved in a Coup initiated by both corporate executives and members of the French government. However the whole plan did not go as planned and now a team of coworkers are held by the remainder of the previous government. You are to make sure they can not release information on either the corporate or government involvement in this coup. Whether they’re brought back dead or alive is not a concern for Alexon anymore. They’re simply concerned with covering up their involvement, If we fail then it means the arrest of dozens of people, prosecution by international bodies as mercenaries, and possible collapse of a whole countries government. Possibly even worse.
Alexon Defense Strategies as a company usually recruited from Europe and Africa, men who served in the French Foreign Legion, 44 Pathfinder Platoon, 3 Commando Brigade, and the Marine Fusilier Commando Company are the most common in the company. However there is a small number of American, Canadian, Brazilian, Indian, and South Koreans are also part of the company. Your character may be of any background so long as it’s realistic and within reason. However given the nature of Alexon, a French based company that does most of its operations in former French colonies you are trained to speak French at a conversational level. You are also taught key words in the local language and local hand gestures to help ease communication.
Alexon has a very liberal policy on equipment. You are free to choose your own kit and clothing. The company has a stock of 9x19mm, 5.56x45mm NATO, 7.62x51mm NATO, 7.62x39mm, and 5.45x39mm ammunition for your needs. Other ammunition is available to be shipped in at a cost to the contractor. In the country you are most likely to find various AKM and AK74 pattern firearms as well as FAMAS rifles and smaller numbers of FN FALs, Daewoo K2s, and G3s usually from Nigeria. However given the number of contacts at the companies disposal anything within reason is obtainable.
Remember, you can not let the media be aware of your presence in the city. While you can engage forces who are firing at you it is important to keep your actions low key. We've just finished scrubbing the Corporate Headquarters. Your first act will be to meet up with a friendly named Takfarin Zéroual. He leads a small brigade of the ADFM in the Yambarra neighborhood who will help you get to Toufaghani.
