The Frozen gates
20 miles south of Chateau le Breton

The wind howled with the God's disapproval of the situation as the 300 stood there, line abreast, spears glinting in the winter morning and a light snowfall collecting on their kite shields. Between each shield held a spear, 6 feet long with a sharpened tip. Behind each shield stood a man of Breton, his mail armor and steel kettlehelm marking him as a loyal footmen, the red Lilly of Breton showing through the quickly worsening weather.

Arthur Breton, eldest of the 4 children of Breton, Elder brother to two murdered, son of a Father slain by Tepet's military incompetence as much as he was by the Bull's heretic forces. Heir a throne that he did not want, wielder of a blade he had yet to earn in battle. Leader of a band of men he had yet to lead in to battle.

Still, he had a duty to carry out, a promise to defend his realm and it's people at all costs. Yet he held only three hundred men under his control, and he was the sole Exulted. This battle was not to defeat the Bull's hoard, yet to hold them off for as long as possible. 5 miles behind them, down the small mountain goat path, lay a train of peasants. Most were women with children, the few elderly who chose to leave, and what ever pack animals could hold the few earthly treasures they could, mostly family heirlooms, the House Breton Heraldry, his Little brother's Books, his mother's still unfinished tapestry, the little remaining Jade of the House Breton coffers.

His youngest sibling, his dear sister who was barely in her 16th year, stood guard along side this train, as did her 40 or so Handmaidens and huntresses. Unlike many of the southern Houses, who schooled their daughters to be only good in matters of the house and court, the Daughters of Breton received the same training of the sword and bow. Each of them held a Northern Longbow and an arming sword, as was the tradition of their mothers and grandmothers before them.

His mind was torn from his thought by the sound of a Icewalker warhorn in the distance. Standing from his kneeling position, he slipped on his painted helm and strode through the snow towards his men. He knew the forces rapidly advancing towards his line were Ice walkers, lightly armored tribal warriors that lacked heavy armor and cavalry, and he understood why the Bull would send them his way.

In all likelihood the Bull's main forces had detoured to the west, taking a much larger and less well defended pass, but one that would put them too far out of the reach of House Breton's Vulnerable. He was the little fish here, one not worthy of the Bull's direct attention. This was something that both satisfied Arthur, and pissed him off.

"Sir, enemy sighted, 250 yards or so down the slope. I can see a line of archers...Arrows incoming!" He snapped to his line and gave the order, "Shields up!" with that, the kiteshields of his men were wrenched upwards. To add to this, Arthur channeled his powers to pull a pair of large rectangular slabs of mountain stone from the ground and held them in the air, blocking a good portion of his men from the storm of arrows. As the arrows fell he felt his arms begin to shave and tremble, the stones were largely comprised of granite and took more force then normal to lift them.

Then, thankfully, the stone and bronze tipped rain ceased. He propelled the stones a good distance to the sides of his men and rest for a moment when another warhorn sounded. He knew what this meant and could see the looks in the eyes of some of his men. If he were to fall here, then let it be a glorious end.

He stepped through his line and drew Godpiercer in his right hand. "Son's of Breton, my brothers in arms, the odds are not good, and the Bull's heretical mages have cursed us with this gloomy day. I will be frank with you all, this battle might be our last...our last Stand! These heathens come here and wish to draw blood, then let us show them their own! Fuck the Bull, fuck the odds, For glory, For Honor, For House Breton!"

This drew a chorus of cheers from his men, who banged their spears along their shields as a challenge to the coming Ice walkers, "Come then, heathens, come to meet you're gods!" With this, Arthur turned to the coming icewalker and readied his longsword...Yet, the enemy stopped just in view of the Son's of Breton. A voice called out, one Arthur recognized as not from the North. "Northmen, Son's of Breton, we know why you fight, throw down you're weapons, submit to the Bull's armies, and you're women and children shall live!"

There was no answer, then lieutenant, the man who called for the Breton's surrender, heard a distinct whining as what appeared to be a large boulder, the size of a pumpkin came flying at him. Just at the last moment, as the poor Lieutenant looked on in horror, the boulder exploded with the force of a firesalt bomb, sending a wave of stone shrapnel and shards in all directions, peppering the lightly armored skin walkers and tearing unarmored flesh in to bits.

Arthur's reply came in through the wind, booming and defiant over the blizzard as it worsened, "Icewalers, come and get them!" this was fallowed by a warcry from the Breton's as the icewalkers recovered. While more of a shock tactic then a artillery strike, the move did rip the unprotected face of the men in to bits, horribly disfiguring him for the rest of his days.

Giving their own cry, the icewalkers broke ranks and charged the Heavy Infantry of House Breton. The Ground trembled with the advance of a thousand tribesmen as they advanced, yet the Son's of Breton held their ground as their foes came ever clearer. 50 yards, 30...25...15...10...

As the first wave neared Arthur Let loose a roar and summoned forth what remained of his power with a mighty swing that cut the air and carried with it the Lion's roar of his Anima. This first swing felled no less then 5 of them, blackend steel, glowing with blue energy, whistled as the Lion of Breton cut through hide, leather, mail and gambison, a spray of blood and cries of pain causing the nearest Ice walkers to falter at the realization that their first foe was of the Dragon blooded.

The large white Lion roaring above him helped. With this momentary pause, the Son's of Breton did as they were trained to do: advance. They thrust with their spears, skewing a hundred tribes men and giving forth their own warcry to carry their Lord's through the air. For a split moment, the skies clear,ed the winds died down, and the snow ceased.

It seemed the Lion's roar had startled the mages that lay some miles down the pass.

This trend continued, though they would advanced and retreat many times to keep their hold of the narrowest portion of the pass. Arthur remained in front of his men, leading them from the front as any good commander should, cutting down tribesmen left and right, even as his injuries began to pile on and his armor began to degrade from the repeated blows. With the Lion of Breton above him, and Godpiercer in his hands, he was a whirlwind of death, a maelstrom of blood and gore that tore through the ranks of the heretics, easily felling several dozen before pulling back and resting behind the wall of shields and spears that were his men.

They did this for three days, three days of fighting in the snow, three days of holding the Frozen Gates. On the evening of the 3rd day, it look like the Son's of Breton would break, the Enemy sent forth their largest wave yet, Arthur pulled his last card from his sleeve. Ordering his men to stand back a few yards, he buried his blade in to the frozen snow and reached out to the two walls of earth on his flanks. The Lion once again appeared, letting forth a final roar of defiance as the pass seemed to tremble and quake. As the enemy neared, the Knight Captain used what little power he had left to begin a landslide on each slope.

The final trap was sprung, and the Ice walkers looked on in horror as the two waves of snow and stone came down upon them from each side with a massive crash that shook the Heavens as it did the Earth. As the dust cleared the Breton infantry slowly started forward, shields and swords ready, only to find their lord on his knees, his sword planted in to the ground and he him self resting on it, that last act having drained him completely.

The Knight-Sargent, Arthur's second in command, gave the order to collect their Lord and any wounded left alive and make for the camp of their wives.

As they traveled south, towards Port Ilya, word seemed to have spread of the stand of a small little house against the tides of the Bull.

Daesh Oboro'naeda, 1st captain of House Terpischora, Yeiji's party, The captains dining room.

The silver oni stood vigilant aside a group of V'neef officers also invited to partake in the gourmet meal and wineries of the magistrate Yeiji. Daesh wore an olive green silk shalvar and Jameh with vibrant gold trim and designs that hinted to the formality of the party's requirements. Despite the formalities however, he had still presented himself wearing the half mask he had worn to the Cynis party weeks before. Slightly aware and self conscious of his Argyria condition and how perhaps it alluded to both his poor background and lost egg status among the other exalts present. Marking him for certain, rumors were rife even in the V'neef contingents but regardless on word of Luciano and his acclaimed successes in coordinating the Terpischora legions, Daesh singularly seemed to worry about his peers judgements.

Not partaking in either wine nor food, Daesh had brought himself merely to represent Terpischora interests and perhaps asses the conditions of battle and how they would proceed. Rouzen had been implicit in reminding him to pay close attention to who and how Terpischora is suggested to play its part. This however had proved difficult impart of the order from V'neef dynasts to refrain from congregating too closely with Ledaal constituents. The awkward sense of distrust saturating the glances and gestures of V'neef and Terpischora officers all the way down to their men. The V'neef officers diving into the food and wine without hesitation as Daesh simply looked around...

And there he stood, the quaintly kind and skinny man that had visited house Terpischora and played part in all of the recent events. Eugeni of House Ledal, speaking with the secretary of the magistrate and goofily displaying his scarf. It was odd. Daesh still cognitively dissonant to the disposition of Rouzen and Eugeni's accusations, Daesh's thoughts always interrupted themselves before going too far by reminding himself that regardless of Rouzen's path or intentions- his life and sword were hers. Not viewing Eugeni as a threat but more as a restriction. Simply ignore the man and not speak with him, as every dynast and exalt miraculously thinks only of their own house and allegiances when conducting themselves. Eugeni was impossible to be different, as was Daesh. It was just how things were. Neither good nor bad.

Daesh's arms folded as he leaned against the wall and steadily leered at Eugeni's direction without recourse. His mane of greyish silver hair, and this time without his mask, beady eyes. Simply watching. The scarf wasn't so bad, honestly... It looked nice enough.

Xenna Artaxias

Xenna paced slowly around the central table as guests were moving about and picking away at the food and placing it onto their plates. Xenna too would clamp down on the steamy goods layed out for all, although modestly. She was still on duty and habitually felt obligated to maintain her poise as a Captain of the Sky marines. Rebuking any and all attempts to raise a glass of the fine wine and waving away more than one attempt by one House or another to take herself a poured glass, now was simply not the time and with Captain Niigata present, a whipping was the last thing she wanted to tarnish her immaculate record with.

The sky marine captain was standing above many of the officers and dynasts present, similar in height to the masked Terpischora officer, Xenna was further emphasize by her uniformed full plate. Broadening and widening her frame. Her hair was tied back and bunned as to not inconvenience her, held in place by a sky blue clip of alloyed jade. Quite frequently she would rotate in succession to ensure that the security detail was in its place and out of the way of most guest, taking not of the addition of the Vai security, it was almost unnecessarily secured. Perhaps even a bit tantalising for the marines who were in essence watching others eat. I'll get them some extras after this is all done and over. she thought to herself. Finding herself a place at the head of the room, Xenna placed her plate down, quite satisfied having tried a few pieces of everything and went about resuming her professional stance near by the Captain of Dawnlight.

"There's a bit of tension and exclusion in the air, yes? Not like the last meal for the Tepets before running of to their first deployment in battle". She spoke softly to Captain Niigata.

"I wouldn't be surprised if they all go off and start making their own little clubs once they're all down on the ground. You're confident in the Lady Vai's ability to hold them all together?" she asked without giving a look to the captain. The platform of questioning was rather informal and not in line with typical etiquette demanded in a general setting. She was speaking to Niigata casually, simply looking for his assurances in the most genuine way possible. The amount of time both having served, she trusted the Captain to give his honest readings of the situation without petitioning him professionally. If she came as an officer, he may be obligated to lie to her, so instead she presented it as a colleague.

"I'm worries this is just another game to them... Sending their domestic rivals off to the fold to die while they make their sprint to the throne. I'm not entirely comfortable with the notion of being used, Captain Niigata... Not with my men's lives on the line". Now Xenna had turned to the captain of the vessel briefly, then turning to watch as Yang and his vagabond bandit walked and talked only to pass them as a view and see Zara walking away with Yeiji into psudo isolation.

"If you trust none here, privilege me with the knowledge of it." She remarked slowly coming to an end of her taciturn plea. Glancing up at the ceiling for a moment and biting her bottom lip only to cease abruptly to descend her glancing at Eugeni. Who stood there in a funny manner speaking to another bueracrat. What an odd arrangement of officers and nobles...

Eugeni - Somebody’s Watching Me

The Ledaal Noble was so excited about the topic of alchemy that he almost did not notice that eyes were now looking in his direction. The masked gaze of Daesh caught his attention first, and after a moment of recognition, his skin crawled up his back and spine. He could feel terror in his veins, until he realized that Rouzen did not seem to be present. Daesh by himself was less harmful, but he was still capable as a representative of House Terpischora.

Then another woman had given him a glance, and Eugeni was perturbed. An esteemed, tall general, a beautiful woman who had the gaze of a hawk. Eugeni could feel himself sweating again, but for different reasons. She seemed to hold herself with more dignity than many, and she was quite brave and sturdy in comparison to himself. As the other lady had come to interrupt his conversation, he decided to walk toward her, excusing himself from Jiang’s company with a short, polite bow.

Xenna was much taller than himself, an intimidating sight. She would be a challenge to face, but he was willing to try. Still shaking a little, he gave a deep bow. “Hello, my Lady. I am Eugeni of House Ledaal. I noticed you looking toward me and...I was wondering if you were requesting my attention for something...” he introduced himself.

Great House Vai, replacing V'Neef as the youngest House to attain the somewhat moving distinction of 'Great'; Despite their power being roughly the same for some decades prior. A family of Vipers and striking with lethal unseen grace. None embody this more than Azairya, their longest serving matriarch, and whose records of the House dating before her have been curiously curated to have specific gaps in its history.-Imperial Scholar Vintuz Do-Erakos a year before his sudden death in a coach accident.

Zara Azairya Vai

Zara took his words in stride, maintaining her smile, if Yeiji had done his research he would know that Zara was fancied an almost statuesque reincarnation of her grandmother, Azairya Vai, in demeanor and smile. A Household of Serpents was one in which every statement could carry poison. But needless to say he had answered in a manner that she had hoped Yeiji would. He was honest but still keeping with the etiquette expected of his station when replying to her.

"Genuine praise is hard to come by these days." She continued walking, pacing slowly in a wide circle. Positioning Yeiji between herself and the Lady Chuntao. So that she may glance in his direction and it not be apparent to whom she was actually looking at. But clearly conversing with Yeiji in earnest. Zara continued with a wry grin, "But to curry favor with me can only be won by action. Though your compliments are always noted. The Bull has yet to descend from the Far North in force, recent reports he is preoccupied with the Linowans. Which was true. "However, his vassals and lieutenants have seen fit to raid and sortie into the coastal territories around Port Ilya. Plundering and pillaging. So far the local satraps have conducted a somewhat effective defense but by themselves it is a losing battle. The 26th Legion is based in Port Ilya. Its garrisons dispersed and under strength. Your task will be to finance it back up to full strength. Along with the financing of the Satrap auxiliaries. House Vai will of course be willing to lend aid in this endeavor as best we can."

Indeed, the wealth of the Great Houses was extensive and built from the extensive holdings they psosessed. Should Yeiji truly wish to remain honest in his words and win her favor. He'll have to take the carrot proffered. She glanced towards Yeiji while maintaining her smile. No doubt the other Houses would take notice of Yeiji's quickness to ingratiate himself to her. The other Houses will mark this indeed. But in truth her eyes moved casually to look at Lady Chuntao. Ah, there it is, a slight haze of something not quite right. Lady Chuntao of the mysterious House Genji. Why should you use such illusion on yourself less you wish to hide a truth.

Zara flicked her eyes to a pair of Wardens and flicked a finger to Lady Chuntao. The dull silver armoured warriors moved over smoothly despite being in full armour. Their gait was curiously rather quiet. Like a pair of cobras moving towards their prey. The Wardens clamped armoured gauntlets on Lady Chuntao's shoulder. Their war masks giving a fierce expressionless intensity. Zara turned to be perpendicular to Yeiji. "Lady Chuntao you say your name is. Of Hourse Genji. Curious I have never heard of such a house before." Unease, several Sky Marines tightened their hands on their weapons. Ready to draw them. The Wardens remained passive. A third moved up behind and dangled a necklace frizzing with purple haze around an orange stone.

The illusion diminished to reveal a man in women's garb. "My, my." said Zara with a grin.

Captain Niigata.

Isoroku leaned back in his chair. Placing down a full hand of cards to some groans from a few dynasts belonging to Cynis and Sesus. Niigata turned to Xenna. "She may have the appearance of her mother and grandmother. But she shares the latter's mind and her father's martial spirit. She is experienced in the horror of battle but she will be tested in strategy as her focus there is so far only in the textbooks." Niigata's answer was honest and Xenna could tell he held respect for her. But how much of it was also holdover respect for Kalibron?

Gregor - Wicked Games

Lady Chuntao has been standing near Jiang for only a moment, when “her” eyes flickered outward toward the audience. Not many eyes had looked in “her” direction, but Gregor still listened to the conversations around him. He had not intended much of consequence by playing with Jiang, but he figured he could at least make the man a bit flustered. As he would enjoy watching a politician’s doormat squirm.

Yet Zara turned-out to be watching and listening to Gregor’s schemes, and while she had been busy inflating Yeiji’s ego, she had not forgotten about the supposed lady from House Genji. She continued to speak with the host of the party while walking in a circle around him, almost in a waltz. In his disguise as Lady Chuntao, “she” only eyed Zara with mild curiosity as she approached, moving in front of her as she spoke in the other direction. Sky Wardens happened to follow, as they feared an intruder on the ship.

Gregor was too comfortable with hostile soldiers at his shoulders. They stared at his disguised face, which was calm and polite. “...Oh?...What is this?...” “She” did not blink, but instead looked from one Warden to the other, before facing Zara. Gregor internally could not help but groan. She would get a hint, wouldn’t she? he thought, preparing himself. He was more surprised to see a Warden whip-out an Anti-Magic Charm, which reacted instantly to his disguise, and before he could react, his true appearance was revealed. His saving grace was that he was not in women’s clothes when he was revealed, but rather in the military uniform he had worn before disguising. Dark-crimson, high-collared robes, almost the color of blood, with golden embroidery rising like flames around his sleeves and hem, with black trousers underneath, and rough black boots to give him a stately look. He was mischievous, and possibly even dangerous, but he was not a fool or a vagrant.

And yet he could not help but let a chuckle escape him. “Hello, Zara. It’s been some time, hasn’t it?...You were always too smart...and far, far too nosy,” he teased, a slight, devilish grin peeking on his lips. He was not offended or worried, as he had prepared himself for the worst. “...You should recognize that I am Gregor Mahajan, your Exalted History professor from the Heptagram. So before you decide to try and throw-out your old teacher, I do happen to be a commander of my family’s forces. And I should say the wine is actually quite good, for what it’s worth,” he continued, smirking toward Yeiji as he added the last tidbit. He did not draw any weapon, nor did he look to defend himself. He was having fun before the gravity of the war landed over the ship’s occupants. “Anyway, I did plan to stay for cards, but if you did wish to continue this conversation further, by all means.”

Yang

The sudden upset to the party came from the unveiling of the impostor. Yang was already on guard, such was needed for some one like himself, that and the larger then normal amount of alcohol in this system made it so the desert hermit moved with unnatural grace and speed.

Jumping up from the table he drew the fire wand, cocked the hammer, and leveled it on man's head ready to crater it with a trigger pull. Then he spoke. Yang Paused. "Lady Vai, do you know this man?" Kahn sat in his chair, relaxed as ever and sipping his wine.

Arthur Breton

The sound of a warhorn, the yell of men, clashing of blades...the cries of the wounded and dying. He swung left, then right, cutting down barely armored tribesmen one after another...his armor was dinged dented, and even broken in some parts...an arrow stuck out of his left leg, one of the few steel tipped arrows the heretics had having pierced the thinner armor and pinning the bit to his leg.

Then a rumble, a wall of snow burring him, leaving him stuck, frozen, like so many of his brothers...

He awoke with a start and in a cold sweat. He found him self staring at the same tent ceiling he had been waking up to for days. As with most mornings, the warm form of his sister lay next to him. They weren't together in the sense some dynast's are, such a tradition being heavily frowned upon in House Breton. They were always close, and now that they were all that's left, they needed to stick to each other as much as possible.

He leaned over and gave her a peck on the forehead before swinging his legs over the side of the bed and standing up. He was sore, all over. Even a few weeks after the Battle of The Frozen gates his body was recovering from strain of battle. His armor has been repaired, and Godpiercer had been undamaged through the battle.

His squire had notified him the night before that fresh forces from House Vai would be coming to aid them, this was good news and he already had a plan to gain their trust. Perhaps there was hope for this war after all.

Eugeni - Gentlemen, This is the War Room!

Eugeni had introduced himself to Xenna, when commotion had begun behind him. He turned to face the crowd, and at first, he was not sure what to make of the noise. Wardens had silently swarmed toward the middle of the room, not too far from where he had been standing a moment ago. Jiang and Yeiji were near the epicenter of the drama, but were not the source. He took a glance toward the beautiful girl who had teased Jiang, and noticed that Zara had marched to confront her.

Oh no...a fight...Not now... He thought to step forward, wanting to perhaps break a fight, but Zara did not seem ready to fight quite yet. And yet before his eyes, before he could excuse himself from Xenna’s side, he saw someone raise a crystal. He gasped. Anti-Magic?! He dared not speak his worries aloud, as he waited to see what sort of Magic would reveal itself. Eugeni then nearly choked, as the disguise fell and revealed his beloved teacher.

“...P...Professor?!” His face became electric-pink from mortification, and he could not help but stare. Gregor was not dressed in commander’s gear, calm and collected, but revealed to be up to no good. He had just teased a bureaucrat and had attempted to speak to Zara, of all people. Eugeni feared now that she would try to attack him, especially after Yang also rose to fight. He stuck by Xenna’s side, hoping that Gregor would be able to fight for himself. If not, he would have to intervene somehow, and cause even more drama for what should have been a quiet voyage.

To say Creation is the only world is but conjecture, and unproven, I like many of my peers believe that Creation is one of many Worlds. For that I go to the explorer Akilleus whom lived during the time of the Old Shogunate. Who journeyed, supposedly, beyond the edges of the map. Gazing upon Mahalanka before it's fall, before Rathess was in ruins, and beyond the islands of the West. In flagrant contrast to the believe of the world sitting flat on a mighty pillar of infinite depth. Akilleus through unknown means wrote of sailing to the highest of heavens. Braving the dangerous Aether and entering the Wyld beyond. Moving, through unseen pathways, beyond even that into the blackness of the void. Into the gates of Oblivion and still further. Whereby, upon his return, he spoke of worlds beyond our own and a curious place of Creation not unlike our own. He wished to return there, and thus he sailed once more, never to be seen again.-Memoirs of Lookshyan Scholar Homeros Zmeirno, attributed RY 80.

Zara Azairya Vai

Zara's face moved into a mask of impassivity. Almost apathy at Gregor's words. Despite the fact that many Dynasts around them openly looked unamused if not insulted at someone seeking to employ subterfuge like this among supposed allies. Supposed. Ally was one thing, trusted friend another, one which was all too familiar to the politicking Dynasts of The Realm. "I think you've embarrassed your House enough for one evening Gregor." She stepped aside. The Wardens of the Eternal Tempest stepped back. He was being allowed to leave, on his own, and for those who knew Zara well enough this was not something she would repeat for him. Should he be resistant to this request that is.

Bridge

"Fresh ping, 11 Horizons." said a crew member to the Lieutenant on duty. "Must be a Skyship, Imperial City replied yet?" replied the Lieutenant to an Ensign overseeing another Rating watching ancient brass machinery transcribe an incoming Heliographic ray. Removing the sheet of paper, freshly printed, the Ensign looked at it before handing it to the Lieutenant. The Ensign spoke, "Not one of ours, Sir." The Lieutenant's eyes scanned down the page of transcribed characters. Decoded by the ancient brass machinery's cipher. Indeed, whatever it was, it was not Imperial.

"We will notify Captain Niigata once they pass the eight horizon mark. More than likely it is Lookshyan."

"Yessir," replied the Ensign.

In flagrant contrast to the believe of the world sitting flat on a mighty pillar of infinite depth. Akilleus through unknown means wrote of sailing to the highest of heavens.

Gregor -

Gregor was not frightened by many people, including almost every student he had ever taught. He knew Zara's aggressive nature well, and her altercation with Zychere had spread rather quickly. At the very least, rich university students liked to talk gossip, when they could afford the time. He had heard that Zychere had his skull crushed, but only because he had been a drunken fool and had started a fight. Gregor had only regarded his actions as mischievous fun at the least. At most, he had intended to embarrass Yeiji from the sidelines. Of course, Zara had no way of knowing that part, and she was not a person for mischievous fun. All he could do was shrug, as the Wardens took a step back, and his former student called her threat.

"Why would I leave? I came for wine and cards, and to give take part in some more...lighthearted entertainment, before we all went to war. If you think I came to cause any harm to anyone, you'd be quite mistaken," he responded, slow and elegant. He grabbed a glass of wine off the table next to him, and he swirled the wine in his hand. "...And it's rather funny that you'd care much for my House, given that you'd rather duel an idiot at a party and cause more strife among the Imperial Realm. What's worse, Miss Vai, disguising as a woman to watch people talk at a party, or nearly killing a man for being stupid?...Not that it's of much consequence when a stupid person falls victim to...ehem...the laws of nature being their enemy, but I'm sure you of all people understand my meaning," he explained.

Eugeni wanted to interject, but he had no idea what he would say. Gregor was a strange man and professor, but never would he have guessed that this same man disguise as a woman and flirt with a politician. Part of him wanted to back out of the party, and to wait for the explosion to take place, but the possibility of civility still seemed likely. And yet Zara was not hesitant about forcing people to follow her rules. The Wardens on the ship were also waiting for him to follow her orders, but Gregor made no motion to leave. With a hand in his pocket, he took a sip of the wine and smirked at Yeiji. What is he planning to do?...Are they going to throw him off the ship?! Eugeni questioned.

"And anyway, why would I leave, if I'm a commander of my House? I was invited by Mr. Yeiji, who has turned-out to be such a wonderful and generous host. And in fact..." His eyes glittered. "I was planning to grant him a generous donation for inviting my humble House to the party. Beside the fact that I'm already helping to fund this expedition? I have no reason to leave, but to celebrate with the rest of the party our wealth and future prosperity. Now...with all of that aside, if you do feel the need to settle this, or to perhaps confront me further on the matter, why not over a game of Karuta? If not, then I'll just go find other people to converse with." He never took his eyes off Yeiji, now that he had put him in a hard place. Sure, he disliked the man utterly, and the idea of giving him a reward of any kind seemed like a horrible idea, but he would at the very least enjoy seeing the man squirm. First he had insulted him, now he had somehow become apologetic and had flattered him. Yeiji was not stupid, but he could smell money, and Gregor had the bait and side with him. Of course, if he did not take it, he had other ways to handle the situation.

Zara Azairya Vai

"Because look at you!" The voice did not come from Zara. Indeed, Zara raised an eyebrow as the orbs of her eyes rotated to the right to find the source of the shout. It came from a wizened Dragon-blooded with a long white beard and hair drawn up in a military top knot, his sideburns combed straight down. Kerada Ragara, a veteran of past Northern conflicts and thus likely chosen for that alone, well into his second century but still muscled and hearty. Marched up to Gregor, peering into his eyes with nothing but contempt, "You shame all of House Mahajan by your antics. Betraying a hosts trust by your parlor trick games. You break the etiquette of civilized society like some Chiaroscuran whore!" Kerada abruptly turned and bowed to Lady Zara and Yeiji, "I apologize for the outburst," before walking out followed by the Ragarans who cast glowering eyes at Gregor. That wasn't all, most of the dynasts had similar gazes of contempt.

Ryamis Cathak walked briskly towards Zara and Yeiji, "House Cathak thanks your Chief Magistrate for the hospitality." Cathak turned his head and spat onto Gregors dress before he too briskly stormed out of the dining room followed by the Cathaks that had accompanied him. Zara motioned for Yang to lower his firewand as she swept an arm to her side in a motion for him to leave.

"Save whatever dignity you once had Professor. And may your actions this campaign restore it." Zara was being suspiciously candid about the whole affair. Granted, for the uneducated it seemed much for this, but there were complex norms in Dragon-blooded circles of society. To wear a disguise, despite how honest the attentions might have been, is looked down upon poorly. To defend it when caught, even worse, and to masquerade as a member of the opposite sex in such a manner...well...actions speak louder than words as clearly seen. Even the House Cynis dynasts seemed perturbed, but probably more for the interruption in the card games and drinking than anything else.

Gregor - Shame Was Something I Lost a While Ago

Gregor waited for Zara's reply, but before she could speak, someone else bursted in anger from across the room. He turned his head to face the man, curious. One of the esteemed generals of House Cathak had come roaring across the room, glaring at him with eyes of flame. He was swarthy and powerful for his old age, as many Dragon-Blooded were, and Gregor changed his posture accordingly as he faced the man. He frowned at the man's comments. The professor saw nothing wrong with what he had done, though of course social norms would say everything was wrong with what he did. He saw his actions as something perhaps to make a joke of, and at worst, to distract from the possibility that many of those present would die at the hands of the Bull. He did not speak as he was scolded, but his eyes spoke for him. He was respectful of this man's position and power, but he found the insult that he was a "whore" to almost be funny. Internally, he snickered. Calling me a "whore" when most people here have no problem getting busy with other Dragon-Blooded, as long as they make children...Ironic.

The silence around him as the general marched away was deafening, and Eugeni shivered as General Ragara moved past him toward the other end of the room. He wanted to take the professor's arm and to drag him out, but Gregor just gave the slightest smirk as the man left. "...At the very least, he was honest. I can't say that's the first time I've been called a 'whore', though I've been called much worse. But I can trust his august and wizened judgment that I am possibly a 'whore'," he commented, his words playful. Nobody could tell quite what he was thinking, but he just seemed unfazed. He had not intended to get this much attention so soon, but he wore it for what it was worth. He smirked at Yeiji once again, and took a sip of wine. "...If no further discussion is necessary, I'll be at a card table," he commented, before walking out the center of the circle.

Eugeni watched him walk into the ocean of people, wine glass in hand, and he sighed his concern. He looked back at Xenna, wanting to talk to her now, and hoping that the commotion would die. Maybe she would be willing to talk to him. Maybe the other party-goers would just go back to doing what they were doing. Maybe Gregor would just play cards and then leave. He took a reluctant sip of his wine, and smiled back to her. "...W-Well...my lady...how are you doing during this evening?...A-Are you a captain of any particular House? I...do not know if we have met or seen each other before..." he spoke.

Zara Azairya Vai

Zara had a momentary eye twitch at Gregor ignoring the blatant social cues nor realizing that his antics may not be well appreciated. Zara signed and motioned to the Wardens. The pair of armoured warriors that had grasped Gregor while he was still in his disguise grabbed the Professor. Two others swiftly moved in as Gregor was lifted off the ground and ungracefully thrown outside of the dining room. The Wardens swiftly blocking his re-entrance. Snickers and laughter echoed from the Dynasts that had witnessed this rather ungainly action. Zara turned to Yeiji, "Care to dine with me?" Her gracious tone reappearing alongside her former smile. Raising a hand to indicate the table Niigata, Xenna, and Yang were seated at.

Gregor - Can Smell Snake Venom

Gregor kept walking away from the crowd without much of a worry, but he did turn back for a moment to check for Eugeni. He did see him, standing with shock and confusion on his face as he watched the affair. His innocent protegé would have no idea why his teacher would seemingly humiliate himself as he did, but he could not explain to Eugeni now. He just slipped the younger Exalted a smile, before he eyed Zara’s own face. Her expression was like a stone, but with a crack in it. Her eye had twitched, and he watched the House Vai princess motion for the guards to retrieve him.

He did not fight, but allowed them to take him out of the party. His smirk grew a little wider on his face. Gregor had fun, and was not insulted to be thrown out of the party. He was a worthy guest who, in his own mind, had done little wrong. Eugeni had not stood on his behalf, but he did not need the young man to do so. As he took a stagger and composed himself, after being shoved out of the party’s cabin, he chuckled along with the people who were laughing at him. “...Ahhh...I haven’t had this sort of fun in a while...Fun of a bloodless sort...” He stretched, and walked away from the guards, deciding to go stand on deck. The ocean was a glorious sight, as was the bright evening sky.

As he stood alone, he pulled his pipe from his pocket and blew bubbles into it. Zara’s immaculate visage had slipped, and he had seen the demon under the mask. The fire she hid from the world. Gregor smiled to himself, treasuring the hidden knowledge he had garnered. Sure, he had only plucked a tiny shard of her true self, but he would put the pieces together, and discover what her true intentions were with a person like Yeiji. After all, now that he had been thrown-out, he had no reason to feign altruism toward the Magistrate. He just needed to kill as much of the Bull’s army as possible, and let his power taunt the bureaucrat.

“...Hmmm...I enjoy the view, but...it is kind of lonely up here...” Changing his tone for a moment, he sighed and smiled as he stared toward the setting sun. Having no partner did not usually bother him, but he liked the idea of sharing an experience with someone worthy. Nobody had proven to be worthy of his affections, thus far, but he wondered. Winning the war would bring him all sorts of attention, but he did not know how much he would enjoy it. He only needed one person, and was infamously picky. His mind made him laugh by suggesting Zara, but then his mind drifted, and he stood blowing his pipe and smirking toward the ocean.

Yeiji listened carefully what Zara had to said. He was relieved that his words had not displeased her and was already planning in his mind the steps he would take to finance the 26th legion. "I am honored by your trust," he said. "I will ensure proper financing and logistical support for the 26th Legion and the auxiliaries. I am also more than happy to accept any aid your house might wish to lend; I thank you for your generous support to the Realm."

'I will have to combine the aid from House Vai with my own proposed ideas,' the magistrate thought, 'in order to finance that legion. This will also give me the chance to try out some new ideas I've got; both with regards to financial management and with moving the supplies. This campaign shall be exemplary for its excellent logistics! If I manage to be efficient enough, I might even manage to both accomplish the task and have leftover money to pocket. That money could then be funneled towards building up a clientelistic base in th-' Yeiji's thoughts were cut short when he heard Zara talking to a woman named Lady Chuntao. Before Yeiji could understand what they were talking about and who this woman was, it was suddenly revealed that it wasn't a woman; it was a man dressed in woman's clothing. And worse, for Yeiji, it was this annoying old man he had met before. "Gregor..." At least Gregor this time praised his wine, stating that it was quite good. 'That's something...'

Yeiji knew better than to try and interfere with the situation. He simply stood by silently and waited for Zara and Gregor to sort things out. He had no wish whatsoever to get himself involved with disputes, at least in such a manner.

Luminesa wrote:"And anyway, why would I leave, if I'm a commander of my House? I was invited by Mr. Yeiji, who has turned-out to be such a wonderful and generous host. And in fact..." Yeiji listened to Gregor praising him but remained silent all the time. 'Generous donation... that sounds interesting but considering that Zara seems to be... less than pleased with this man, it may not be in my best interests to be friendly to him.' For a few seconds, that seemed like centuries to him, the magistrate thought of whether he would praise back the man in hopes of getting the cash he supposedly would donate or whether he would remain silent to avoid offending either Zara or any other of the guests in the party.

As Yeiji was about to say something, a man barked at Gregor. Yeiji almost had a heart attack. 'Well... I guess I should just continue standing silently and let Gregor deal with the mess he caused.' The man was Kerada Ragara, who expressed quite clearly and loudly his distaste for Gregor's actions, before apologizing to Yeiji and leaving the dining room. Ryamis Cathak too apologized to Yeiji before leave the party. 'So much for the party....' The magistrate couldn't help but sigh in disappointment. To his relief, some of the other guests remained in the dining room. 'At least it wasn't a complete disaster...'

With Gregor thrown out of the dining room, Zara suggested that Yeiji join her in the dinner table. Yeiji smiled - with Gregor gone, he had no reason to be nervous anymore - and graciously accepted her offer. "It is my great honor to be able to dine with you," Yeiji replied as he bowed slightly. "I will accept your generous invitation."

Three more people were seated in the table. He recognized Captain Niigata among them. He also recognized Yang as the man who had held that fire wand during the... incident with Gregor. He had heard about Xenna before but wasn't all that familiar with her. Yeiji bowed slightly before the three people, showing his respects and greeting them with proper etiquette. "I am honored to be joining you. I hope that the party has been enjoyable so far. As the host, it is my duty to ensure that."

Yeiji clearly hoped to seat next to Zara in the dinner table - he really wanted to continue their conversation - but he wasn't one to complain if he was offered a seat next to someone else. Being on the dinner table with Zara and Niigata was a great victory for him already. He knew more than a few bureaucrats who would be fuming with jealously.

Yeiji was always quick to ingrain himself with important people; it was the reason he managed to rise through the ranks so quickly. It was an advice that had been passed on in his family and which had served his father, grandfather and great-grandfather quite well, allowing them to build the Wang-Di bureaucratic dynasty. Yeiji knew that the founder of his House was lowborn man with humble background, yet his silver tongue allowed him to get a position in the bureaucracy. From then on, it was simply a matter of building a network of friends and clients, continuously expanding as generations passed.

His grandfather had actually written a treatise on this; 'The Art of Bureaucracy'. It was reserved for members of the Wang-Di House only and offered the accumulated wisdom of the House. Yeiji had studied it more than once in his youth and had memorized parts of it. Whenever he needed advice, this was were he would turn to.

Eugeni - Mingling Is Less Socializing and More Trauma Congo

“...W-Wait!” Eugeni finally spoke as he saw the Wardens moving toward Gregor, but he could not do anything as they surrounded him and grabbed his arms. Well, he could, but he could not start a fight with a group of Sky Wardens. Having bad blood with troops and other House Dynasts going into battle was a good way to ensure that unity would not be had, and everyone would have to work together to bring down the Bull. And yet Gregor smirked at him, like he knew something that the young Noble did not. The smirk was confident and reassuring, as if to say, Don’t worry about me, have fun! I’m having fun too. Thus as he left-or got thrown from the party-Eugeni sank into a chair next to Xenna, his stomach uneasy.

The laughter he heard from other Dynasts did not make him feel better. He wondered if Gregor’s goal had been to make people laugh at him. He had not seemed bothered by the stares and jeers of the crowd, and had even joked about being the ‘whore’ Commander Ragara said he was. He drank some of his wine, and munched on some appetizers. Tiny dumplings, some fruit, and cheese. He did not speak much as he watched the room settle, but his eyes spoke for him when he saw Zara and Yeiji coming to his table.

Just be calm, just be normal, don’t talk about any ridiculous things around her...or around him... Yeiji already seemed to have been rather rude, having cut his conversation with Eugeni short to go flatter Zara. Eugeni felt a twinge of resentment at the man, but he said nothing, and gave a gentle smile as both the Noble and the Magistrate came to sit. The joy his parents would have if he managed to win Lady Zara’s favor. House Vai and House Ledaal united in marriage...but he shook his head. He felt nothing for her, and she had insulted someone close to him. He had attended classes with her as well, and even then he had never socialized with her. All he could do was talk to her, smile, and hopefully get through the night. Maybe Xenna’s presence would make him less anxious. “...Greetings, Lady Zara...and...Magistrate...” he greeted, giving a short bow as he sat.

Alexandros of the House Daveas
King of Elladanos

"Your Grace, the City Masters and Lords of our fair nation are autonomous of your central rule, this is an accepted fact, a fact that every Monarch before you, even your father, has accepted. So we implore you to cease you activities in the Furiana region and to allow the city to be recolonized by loyal citizens of the realm!" It would be a mere cost of 4,000 Gold Talents to reconstruct the ruins, which can be fronted by those wishing to be the first to colonize the city." Aeros Ventari, the Speaker of the Elladanos senate said.

"Speaker Ventari, I grow tired of the Senate and its suggestions. You state that the City Masters and Lords are autonomous of me, this is false in almost every regard, and you know it. The Cities and Lords are autonomous in one aspect and one aspect only, that is militarily, and even that autonomy is suspended during war or a crisis. Royal proclamations can not, and will not be ignored, in war or peace." The Young man wearing the black Iron crown said from where he sat upon his high backed throne.

"King Alexandros, what you say is true, but we are not in a crisis or a war, which is why we demand that the Royal army be stood down from whe--" Ventari managed to sputter out before being interrupted.

"Enough Speaker Ventari!" Alex said, his voice rising as he stood from his throne, anger beginning to transform his normally handsome facial features.

"You moan to me of your rights and privileges and then demand this of me? How dare you? The Royal army is mine by rights, and mine alone. I have broken no laws in my destruction of the Basil insurrection, the auxiliaries that accompanied me have been dismissed and sent home. The Royal army stands guard over Furiana so that the former denizens of the city may reclaim it under royal protection. You will not claim another city for your own family Ventari, now leave my sight or I shall have you arrested!" Alex said as he stared the old man down. The authority that entered his voice when he said it, and the way the Royal guards tensed from where they stood at their posts made Ventari thank the gods that he was allowed to leave.

Alexandros took his seat once more as the Speaker of the Senate fled. It was then that he finally allowed the tension to escape from his body with a sigh. He hated the senate, not the concept of it, but the reality. It was filled with corrupt lickspittles who only wished to further themselves, it was a wonder that he had finally gotten a law that he himself had drafted, pushed through. The law allowed for the immediate arrest and removal from office of any senatorial member who were under suspicion of corruption or some other crime. Already this law had cleared out dozens of members and had allowed the King to replace them with loyal and most likely incorruptible men. "It was a shame that Ventari was most likely just an idiot and not a traitor", Alex thought to himself.

"The Queen Mother Ariana to see you, Your Grace." Argos, the new captain of the Royal Guard called from where he stood by the doors.

A smile appeared on Alexandros face as he heard Argos and he stood from his throne.

"Of course, allow her in Argos!" the King called out.

"Alex, it's so good to see you again darling!" His mother said to him as they embraced. She was entering her forties now and had grey streaks that flew through her dark brown hair. her features were sharp like Alexs and her eyes blue.

"To long mother, to long." Alex said as he squeezed her tight to him.

"I passed Ventari on my way in here, have you finally gotten rid of him?" she asked, hope filling her eyes. Ventari was not just a plague to the King, but had been a thorn in the families side since the days of his grandfather King Hurreos.

"Sadly not yet, still no evidence against him. I am beginning to believe that the man is not actually corrupt, just as stupid as they can get." the King said as he lead his mother to a couch that sat at the edge of the throne room.

"That may be so, but it matters not, I have not come to discuss Ventari, but to discuss you. You need heirs Alex, and exalted heirs at that, you are the first exalted in the family for three generations with Dragon blood, and it must be passed on, have you made any strides towards marriage?" She asked.

"No, I have been to busy dealing with the senate and the rebellion mother.." Alex said, somewhat quietly as the real truth was that he was too nervous to court anyone.

"Well it matters not, I have made strides in that direction for you." she said matter of factly

"What?" Alex almost yelped

"Yes, the bachelorette head of the Vai family, strong, beautiful, and exalted. A perfect match for you, I wrote to her, in your hand of course, requesting the opening of relations between the two of you. I put some more stuff in the letter to make you a more attractive suitor but without making you look obsessed. The rest will be up to you, meeting her and corresponding with her if you cant meet."

"Thanks mother.." Alex said, embarrassed that he couldn't take the first step as his cheeks reddened.

Zara Azairya Vai

"Greetings, and you are?" said Zara to Eugeni with a polite tone. Her face once more the mask of a master dissimilar. Around them the party was more or less returned to normal. Some played cards at nearby tables. Others drank and reveled while eating food that they'll miss once subject to campaign rations. Zara looked at Yang, Niigata, and Xenna as she listened to their conversations. Herself rather quiet. Not surprising to Niigata, she had always been a girl of few words, and the Sky Captain instead looked at the Magistrate.

"Ever been on campaign before?" A plate of food was laid out for Zara and others. She ate gracefully and delicately. Her angular features and sharp defined bone structure giving her beauty even when doing the mundane and potentially ungainly task of consuming food. Zara sipped a fresh goblet of wine. All under the watchful gaze of her Wardens. The bodyguards eyes obscured by their masks. Casting their eyes in shadow. This served a good purpose, as one would be unsure at whom or where they were looking, and thus no one sure of the Wardens visually inspecting.

Zara turned to Yang, "Have you ever been to the North before, Uncle?"

A servant at the entrance to the party was blocked by crossed spears. Zara flicked her head before returning her eyes to Yang. The servant moved over and knelt on one knee. Offering a small letter in a protective leather envelope. "We received parcels before boarding. This was addressed to you and delivered by the Imperial Riding Service." The Imperial Riding Service, IRS, was the state owned postal service. Known for their dedication and speed, for a rider in optimal conditions could ride over one hundred and fifty leagues (300 miles) in a day. Exchanging horses frequently and even riders. This worked in conjunction with Sorcerers sending telepathic messages and the Imperial Heliography Officer as forms of long distance communication. The Riding service however was more private. For the telepathy of sorcerers could be eavesdropped upon by those with enough talent and skill while knowing where to look so to speak. Then Heliography of course required relay stations every 168 miles at optimal pacing and the focused burst of light rays could be intercepted by other Heliographic dishes in a 50 mile radius of the intended receiver or sender if aimed properly.

Zara took the leather case, flipped open the lid, and pulled out the letter. Written in an eloquent hand of High Realm speech. No doubt a highly educated person wrote this. Zara cocked her head slightly. Turning to the messenger she stood, "Excuse me, everyone." Zara abruptly left with the messenger in tow.

Arriving shortly at the bridge. The Sky Navy crew bowed.

"Prepare Heliographic transmission, relay orders to the King of Elledanos, their capital, via Imperial City," she said flatly. The crew nodded and began angling one of the brass dishes. Consulting measuring devices and calculating the parallax of the rising moon for a proper and accurate beam dispersal.

"Standard Naval Cipher code. Read. Transmit and destroy directive." This would instruct the Imperial City heliographers to destroy transcriptions once it was passed along. The Sky Navy crew rotated brass cylinders and adjusted printing type. "Ready for transcription Mi'Lady."

"Start." One of the naval crew readied over a display of brass and bronze glyphs. Zara began her dictation promptly.

To Most Elegant King of Elledanos,
I am in receipt of your letter requesting to meet. I must make it known that I am on campaign in the North. Destination: Port Ilya. To bring Imperial retribution to the Anathema known as the Bull of the North. As such I inform that any meeting will have to be on your own initiative to reach me. For I am unsure of when I will be able to fulfill your request. However, I will intermittently be able for correspondence. I have read your letter and must find your attributes most becoming of a proper monarch. May your rule continue long and just.

Sincerity,
Zara Azairya Vai

"Stop. Transmit."

The crewman stopped typing on the glyph board. Reaching up he opened a focusing lens and a Blue Jade stone that focused the moon light into a tight ray. Opening a further end the naval man began turning a crank which caused a rapid transmission of the message order. The recipient's ray of moonlight once it arrived would strike their receiving dishes in such a sequence as to activate a pneumatic transcribing machine to begin processing the message in Ciphered code.

"Message sent Your Grace."

"Thank you. Burn our copy." replied Zara as she turned away. Making her way back to the party as the smell of burning paper was behind her.

Arriving back at the party she sat down and readied her utensil. "My apologies again. Uncle, my question if you will?"

Eugeni - Fake It Til You Make It (Hurt)

Zara had a polite but grounded tone, the voice of someone who knew exactly how to act in social circles. She could mingle with anyone. Her face was a blank palate, waiting to be covered once again with an expression of interest or mild amusement. Eugeni ate some of his food, and sipped a little wine, before he turned to face her again. With a nod, he answered, "I am Eugeni Ledaal, of House Ledaal. It is...nice to meet you." He nodded his head to her, as he could not quite bow while sitting. Yet part of him said that he should try being rebellious, and should not bow to her at all. No, no...I should be respectful...At the very least, we can avoid an all-out war in the ballroom... He gave a pleasant smile, gentle and friendly, hoping that she would not see how nervous he was.

When asked if he had ever been on a campaign, Eugeni shook his head. "My parents were quite happy for me to stop studying and to go travel on a military mission. I probably would not have gone if not for their heeding...and not without my little cousin saying he would also be coming. I wish to always be able to protect him, but...he is a young man, now, and I must show my family that I can uphold the honor of House Ledaal as well..." He gave a wistful smile, as he did not know how useful he would be at the front of the combat. He would have to stay near the back, or support the troops, as most of his abilities were aimed at healing or defense. Before he could ask her a question, however, he was once again interrupted. Someone brought her a letter, and she stepped out of the room. He sighed, and stared at his food.

He had never quite felt this alone and awkward at a party. Shi had not come, or if he did he had gone to speak to someone else. Gregor was gone, and few of the other Nobles seemed to take him seriously. Though Mr. Yeiji...must know now that I am a Noble...Maybe he'll consider how he was rude to just stop talking to me?... He did not ponder out of self-pride, but more because he was concerned about social protocol. He was being told to talk to people, but others did not want to talk to him. He wanted to hand his head, but instead he sat upright and quietly ate his food. When Zara returned, he looked at her face for any signs of distress. If she was nervous about anything at all, she was good at hiding her feelings. Too good. "...Is everything alright?...You seemed quite concerned receiving the letter...Was it anyone important?"

Alexandros of the House Daveas
King of Elladanos

A servant walked into the war room, head bowed low as he showed respect to the men and women gathered there. In the hand of the servant was a parcel which had just arrived and had been rushed to the king. All conversation stopped and the eyes locked onto the servant as he took a knee beside the King and held the parcel up to him. Alexandros slipped the letter from the parcel and quickly read the short and simple letter.

“Well this settles it, The head of house Vai is on campaign in the north and has invited me north.” The king said as he handed the letter to his cousin Cleo. She was a distant cousin, but due to her being a fellow exalted, they had grown close and she was one of his most trusted military commanders and advisors.

“Is that wise Your Grace? Leaving so soon after establishing order within the senate might signal to those still corrupt individuals that they can get away with coming back to power, you would need a strong regent.” Cleo said, making a valid point. Several of the other people in the room grumbled or made some other form of agreement for the younger blonde girls words.

“Valid point cousin, but the senate wouldn’t dare rising up again, my mother would not stand for it.” Alex said with a relaxed and amused smile.

“Ah yes, I wouldn’t risk it either, not with the Queen Mother.” Argos, the commander of the royal guard, said to a round of soft laughter.

“But the other question must be raised Your Grace. How many men do you intend to take with you? And do you intend to fight this war? It is not ours after all.” Argos added on, drawing more sounds of agreement from the others.

“The 200 men of the Royal guard plus a Cohort of 1,000 men from the Royal army should be sufficient for my plans, because I do not intend to fight, but to merely observe how the imperials go about war and to show my qualities off to the Lady Zara.” Alex said.

“Make ready then Royal fleet, stock provisions for the trip to Port Ilya, I want to leave before weeks end.” Alex added, standing from his throne to show that he was finished with the conversation and that his councilors were dismissed.

“Yes your grace.” Cleo said as she and the others bowed at the waist before turning and marching from the room, all except Argos who merely donned his helm and stopped at the door to guard his king.

Later that day, Alex had a reply sent back to Lady Zara.

To the Illustrious Head of House Vai

Your message has been received and understood. I strive to meet you at the soonest possible moment and have readied my fleet to join your campaign. As this war is not mine I must sadly inform you that I will not fight unless provoked but shall merely observe. Any provisions used by my men will be payed for by my treasury so as to not make a burden of ourselves. I look forward to our meeting.

Sincerely
King Alexandros Daveas the First
King of Elladanos

—5 days later—

The wind of the inland sea caught the sails of the Royal Fleet of Elladanos. Five dragon ships glided through the Sea at normally impossible speeds. They were surrounded and escorted by 20 Tiremes and 25 sloops of war.

These vessels carried the twelve hundred men that would accompany the king to the north.

The journey would take a month and a half according to the best estimates, and Alexandros used this time accordingly, training himself and his men for combat aboard a ship where the land below you was constantly moving.

He also improved his knowledge of naval warfare, his weakest link in his military knowledge and something that he knew needed to be fixed. The young man in him was nervously excited to meet the head of house Vai, as stories had reached him of her prowess and other aspects of her. But the King in Him was cautious, he had his reputation to uphold, and chasing after the Lady Zara like a horny teenager would only serve to embarrass him and his nation.

Xenna Artaxias,
Captain's dining hall.

Imperialisium wrote:Captain Niigata.

Standing idle besides the captain of the vessel, Xenna gave no attention to the game that was unfolding at the table and instead was surveying the room still. When Captain Niigata regaled her with his opinion of Zara, Xenna simply shrugged her shoulders lightly in an understanding manner and proceeded to step back while a new hand was being dealt. Pondering the probability of competency still, Xenna slowly looked to her side when her peripherals struck out to her and she rewound back to the other only to see wardens initiating an ordered approach to one of the female dynasts. Xenna began to strut in that direction, finding herself near Eugeni and Jiang but well away from the snatching guards and their culprit. The abrupt transformation inspired a wincing eyebrow raise from the sky marine captain as her mouth expressed slightly sideways in perturbed confusion.

It was a man...? she thought. The... Audacity! Using deception and trickery to parlay with your peers! How could one muddy themselves with such dishonour?!

The verbal exchange continued between Zara and the well dressed Gregor who identified himself as her past instructor. Xenna couldn't help but be baffled at the discussion and assumed perhaps Gregor held some type of repertoire with the lady Vai. The unease of all sky marines present was universal, even with their captain. Apparently Zara was having none of it, furthermore Gregor spoke inferred words of challenge! Just as thought halfway presented itself to Xenna over the ramifications of even considering a duel with one charged to lead the expeditionary forces Eugeni had diffracted from the situation and interrupted Xenna's thoughts. Bowing politely, Xenna was taken aback from the berating chastisement herself when Eugeni spoke of his Ledaal lineage. A brief enough pause occurring when Gregor made reach to Yeiji.

Looking down at the Dynast before her, Xenna met his bow with her own at an equal preset. Her duty in the Sky marines heralded her the luxury of not needing to bend further but had she been met outside of her service, Eugeni was in fact her superior. Artaxias currently negotiating it's borders with both Ledaal and V'neef as a vassal and by house reputation. If Eugeni was with wit, he would notice the armored valkyrie almost stutter and lurch in her momentary uncertainty at the depth of her returned bow.

"Eugeni of Ledaal, my name is Xenna of House Artaxias. It.. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance! Forgive me if my gaze offended- My position as captain of the 1st wing demands that my duty and attentiveness be given in full to the security of those in attendance. It was not my intention to..." Xenna glanced over to hear the shouting of the Ragara officer and other dynasts move to take their leave. Xenna motioned for the sky marines at the door to step aside from their path to ensure wreck less shoulder checks would not instigate the situation further. "It was not my attent-" seeing Gregor now being remanded and lifted, Xenna looked to see Zara's scalding glare towards her former teacher and then to Captain Niigata. The captain simply bent his lips and shrugged before motioning Xenna over in an indirect manner.

"Please Excuse me, Lord Eugeni." Xenna requested before stepping backwards and dropping her head in courtesy to the Ledaal dynast. In a 180 turn, her thick matted cloak of black feathers bellowed behind her slightly as other guests stepped back to give way. Finding herself a seat, Xenna placed herself down besides Captain Niigata and shortly after heard the Ledaal dynast repeal Gregors judgement. Xenna observed the silent assurance gregor passed to Eugeni and took note of Eugeni's dropping shoulders in not defeat but uneasiness. Eugeni then turned around and provided himself a seat next to Xenna. On one hand, Xenna had never heard of this Eugeni despite her mediocre knowledge of dynastic lineages, Oh how it had been so long since she went back to study the many names. Eugeni's unintentional confidence however assured Xenna that perhaps he was agent on behalf of Ledaal her on the Dawnlight. A few moments passed, and Yang and Yeiji soon followed at Zara's behest.

"Greetings Lady Zara... And magistrate..." Eugeni spoke. Unknowingly enlightening Xenna to Yeiji's position. Xenna however had no intention to speak and instead listen, Captain Niigata was representative of her own interests and she felt no reason to add a second voice. Zara had then passed a question to her... Lieutenant Yang? Before being interrupted by a parcel and then excusing herself. Xenna paid It no mind as it was typical behavior in the upper echelons of command and assumed it was relative to the expedition. Taking away her consistent gaze at the magistrate however, Eugeni was so very peculiar in his introductions. He tend to pause often as if unsure of himself and was portraying a rather intimidated poise. Not having noticed it the first time she heard his introduction impart of her own anxiousness, Xenna had now calmed and settled and was more than capable of picking up on the cues. Even his explanation and answer to Zara's regarding his campaign experience began to shed light. In truth, it was the reason she stared so intently at eugeni earlier. He hadn't looked seasoned nor confident in the prospect of the expedition and his aura was bleeding onto the environment among other officers who were so much more accustomed to the ordeal of war.

Xenna eye'd the food and assortments of delicacies and drink, she began to think to herself... These commodities, were they presented as gestures from the magistrates own pockets? Or perhaps they were 'procured' from the imperial stores. considering the ease of access this Yeiji benefited from.

"Magistrate Yeiji". Xenna abruptly broke her silence. "Will you be supervising the field of battle directly? Or.... Will you be nearby?" Xenna asked almost casually while reaching to the table to play with a fork and morsel. Pushing it side to side on its platter.

Eugeni - Just A Little Respect Would Be Nice

Being buzzed on expensive wine was not something Eugeni was told would be part of a Nobleman's social life, but he could not deny the lightheaded sensation bubbling through his head and chest. A glass of wine was gone, and he decided to skip on a second glass, letting himself experience the mildly dizzying feeling. He looked at Xenna and noticed that despite her tall and stately appearance, she was quiet and observant. She did not try to speak much to others, and instead listened to the conversations swarming around the table. She had only spoken a handful of sentences as Zara had come to sit at the table, and she had not spoken at all as Gregor's drama had unfolded. His family was on more professional terms with her own family, but Xenna made Eugeni curious. To him, she seemed to act more like a Noble than the feisty, brutal Zara.

He did wish she would talk, however. Zara and Yeiji both seemed unimpressed with him, and he wished to at least have someone look at him with a hint of regard. He was here of his own volition, he felt that in itself was honorable enough to warrant being an equal to his fellow Exalted. Eugeni gave Xenna a hopeful smile, and he watched her eye the food. She had an uncertain look in her eye, and he wished he could read minds. Maybe he would know how to talk to this serene, statuesque woman. Of course, the alcohol did do its best to help him. "...The food tastes interesting, don't you think?" he inquired. "The cook is quite skilled, whoever they are...but the host chose a rather light selection of appetizers...Odd for a military expedition...You would think most of the people here would...have to eat a little more...But the wine is actually very sweet..."

Forgetting for a moment that Yeiji was sitting right across from him, he gave the Magistrate a cheery smile, and then turned toward Xenna again. "Artaxias is your family name? Well, I do hope that...we can be friends. I don't have many friends, and I think I would enjoy being your friend..." Enjoy? He wondered if he had used the right word. A friend was to be loved, not enjoyed like a glass of wine. But one could enjoy a friend in the sense of enjoying their company...Eugeni blinked. Too much to think about. "...Do you know anymore about the Bull of the North than we do?...Given your military expertise, perhaps you know more of...how we should attack..." Despite the serious change in conversation, maybe Xenna would be able to talk to him, if the discussion was about something she cared to discuss.

Zara

Zara listened to the conversations around her, idly stirring her wine by rotating the goblet in a slow circular fashion, eyes idly rolling from person to person as they engaged in their idle conversations. They where going to war, she was going to war again, her eyes lowered to the wine. How many nights had she spent staring at a freshly emptied flagon of drink after she had got home from her previous campaign. She straightened her back and pushed the thoughts, the memories, to the back of her consciousness. To anyone watching there would be nothing but the most subtle fluctuation of her lower lip on one side. Just a small deviation to a low turned frown before springing back to her impression of social amicability.

The Next Day
(TIme Skip to Progress Towards)

Zara awoke in her private chambers. Alone. She rose, the warm soft blanket provided by her servants falling, she felt the warm air of the heated ship on her exposed breasts. She stood and looked in the mirror and frowned. She had slept well, better than she had hoped, and felt well rested. Zara moved quickly with practiced precision in dressing herself. Re-armoring herself. Fixing her hair into a military style top knot. Emerging from her small cramped chamber amid the rising warriors of House Vai. A pair of Wardens fell in behind her as she moved from the Vai compartments to the deck of the ship. Hands clasped behind her back as she made her way to the prow of the ship. The mighty vessel was continuing at an appreciable pace to the North by North-East heading it had been on since leaving the Imperial City.

She let out a long breadth of relaxation as she gripped the railing rising to chest height. The railing itself just above metal guard plates that rose to mid-chest level as a means to prevent crew from accidentally falling over the side. She turned around and felt the Sun on her face. The air was cool, cold even, and she felt it whisping between the strands of her bangs. She brushed them behind her ears and opened her eyes. A glint of something in her peripheral vision. Why was the Sun glinting?

Her eyes widened as a metal object fell from the Sun. Its position in front of the Sun preventing her from seeing it. She pointed and shouted a warning...

Gregor - Strange Bedfellows Make Excellent Sparring Partners

Having stood smoking his pipe for about an hour on the Skyship, Gregor eventually decided to retire for the night. He had no reason to remain awake, except to discuss strategic matters with his fellow soldiers. They were mostly in bed as well. Without much ceremony, he went to his room and changed into his bed-clothes. Not before, however, he looked in his fireplace and murmured some words into it. Only the fire knew what he had spoken, and it flickered in understanding toward his bed. Gregor laid in a silk night robe, and as he fell asleep, his mind was focused on matters downstairs...

The next morning came far too quickly, but he was used to having to rise early. Gregor’s eyelids flitted open, and he grumbled as he moved out of the bed. “...Ahhhh, I’m not hungover?...Heh. Didn’t have quite enough wine for that, I suppose...How disappointing...” He tied his robes more tightly, when he heard a shout from downstairs. “...Ahhhh, the action has come to us? Or is something dying of rotten food from that party?...Hopefully Yeiji choked on several olives...” Just in case, he grabbed a longsword, tucked it under his robes, and hurried to the deck.

Zara was already on deck, much to his displeasure, and he deducted that she had been the one to scream. He drew his sword, only to look upward and to see something falling toward the ship. With a sigh, he summoned his Fire Aspect. Golden flames began to tickle his feet, and rose around him to seek the challenge. As they rose, they met the metallic object, and turned into a huge, golden dragon, curling and holding the object upright. “...Well then...are we being bombarded already?...I’m rather flattered...”

Alexandros of the House Daveas
King of Elladanos

The tall and smiling man strode into the throne room, his attendants followed behind him, their heads bowed respectfully. Like normal, Alexandros sat upon his high backed throne, the recent days had been busy for him as he and his party prepared to go north. Alex looked up from where he sat towards the smiling man. He had a long black beard and several broken teeth.

"Ah Lord Chin Li, I am glad you have finally arrived," Alex said with a tired smile.

"I am no lord your highness, please call me Li," Li said with a broken smile.

"Any man with you skill deserves to be called a lord, but as you wish Li, you understand why you are hear then, and you have already received the blueprints sent to your room?" Alex asked.

"Yes your highness I have. I can make your strider how you want it, it will be costly though, I ask for forty thousand Gilden, or dentari is I believe how your people term them?" He said

"A reasonable price, I will be leaving within the week for a long trip, you first payment will come immediatly in the form of half the requested price, the rest shall come when you are finished and I have returned.." Alex said, making sure this was not an argument.

"That..is reasonable your highness and I agree," Li said

Xenna Artaxias,
Table conversations (prior to the skip)

Luminesa wrote:Eugeni - Just A Little Respect Would Be Nice

Xenna's question to Yeiji was followed by the briefest of pauses when Eugeni readdressed the marine captain, the swirling conversations typically went through such chaotic patterns and by no means was it rude or misplaced on Eugeni's part. Eugeni sitting to Xenna's left side meant that her injured eye and covering faced the young lord of Ledaal. Her hearing had no issue though and she turned to give her full attention to the scion, looking him directly in the eyes.

"Well, if I'm correct Lord Eugeni, it was our magistrate here who takes credit for the preparation and recipe. I must say... Taking up hobbies such as cooking must be amicable and readily available to the administrative tiers of the empire." It was more a less a blunt joke and stab at the freetime and laxed responsibility of imperial magistrates. Xenna couldn't imagine having the time to pursue such a hobby as a commissioned officer.

"Interesting is certainly a well enough way to describe it. I can't say that I've experienced something as exquisite since my days before joining the sky navy." Xenna gave the scion a light smirk as she assumed Eugeni was catching her drift in regards to the original joke. Luxuries such as this were far and few and Xenna rewound to her previous thoughts of making it up to the staff of sky marines who were consigned to watch the nobles and dynasts take in their fill.

"I haven't had the pleasure of tasting the wine, Lord Eugeni." Xenna retracted from her calmer tone slightly and seemingly became a tad more taciturn. "If I were to indulge in drink here and now, protocol demands that I take 10 lashes for my infraction against my duties and watch." Xenna looked above Eugeni momentarily and pointed out her fellow sky marines with simple eye contact before continuing. "Consumption of alcohol is prohibited when on watch for all Sky navy personnel, being an officer does not absolve me of this- it would be a disservice to my peers to flagrantly flaunt any privileges afforded by rank or station. Regardless of company or invitation." Xenna spoke proudly however reaching her conclusion. Just before Eugeni's second question came, the timing could not have been better placed. Xenna slipped in her own remark, "save me a glass for when my watch end-"

Only slightly interrupted by Eugeni's suggestion, "Artaxias is your family name? Well, I do hope that...we can be friends. I don't have many friends, and I think I would enjoy being your friend..."

Xenna's face eyebrow raised at the awkward delivery of the comment. Eugeni didn't carry himself with the same pomposity and arrogance of most dynasts and was rather forthright with his... Shortcomings? The pause was only momentary before Xenna caught Eugeni's fumble on his behalf and assuredly resounded, "Yes, House Artaxias. *clearing her throat* In fact, our Manse is just on the borders of the great house Ledaal. My father, Lord Erato Artaxias, is more acquainted with and frequently in contact with Ledaal dynastic constituents. Maybe his name would ring a bell?" Xenna reminded herself of the turbulent political geography and how Ledaal or V'neef would have their eyes set on garnering assurances and oaths of vassal fealty of Artaxias sooner than later and hoped dearly Eugeni would not navigate near the subject. House Artaxias had done well playing the fence and using the imperial sky navy as a deterrent to avoid throwing in their lot with either houses. Friend...?
The reciprocal remarks gave Xenna time to process Eugeni's use of the word "friend". Honor was a pillar in Xenna's psyche, mutual respect and transparency were rare and beautiful in the realm. If Eugeni spoke in such a way and meant it, only time would tell.

"Lord Eugeni, it would be an honor." Xenna stated strongly giving him a nod. "If you find yourself in need of a friend among your peers, you may look to me. And I will do the same". It would be rude to deny Eugeni however deep in her mind she prayed that Eugeni had no vestiges of mental instability or off putting quirks that would return to haunt her for simply saying yes. After all, she was a soldier and not a caretaker; the list of spoiled and unstable dynasts were infinite but duty and honor demanded she not turn down his request.

"I can only say that I've possibly shared a battlefield with the bull but I've never seen him. He's anathema, thus consigned to death by law of the hunt. That doesn't take away his competency and will to survive and thrive." again Xenna looked above Eugeni as she recounted the experience of having her eye gouged out in battle while coming to aid the Tepet retreat. "His prowess and ambition are deserving of their rightful respects but nothing more..." Xenna had no wishes to unfurl her ire for her lost eye at the Ledaal Scion however, assuming he would put 2 and 2 together on his own and quickly continued. "Were fortunate to have a diverse battleforce, utilising those advantages will serve us well. In truth, Lord Eugeni, I am but a simple tool- I serve as the Sky navy's hammer and scalpel. Crashing forward at the vanguard or surgically removing those that which to hide. While I am a graduate of the bells, my job is to serve my intended purpose and supplement discussions pertaining to my role as drop assault only." Xenna became sort of passionate about her 'purpose'. The thrill of crashing from heaven upon her foes as a calamity sent from the Gods was exalted in its very essence of execution.

Sensing she was drolling a little bit, Xenna became curious to Eugeni's feeling of purpose. "And yourself? Where does the Lord Eugeni find his calling on the battlefield? What will your purpose be...?" Xenna studied the appearance and previous posture of the Ledaal Scion, perhaps he would surprise her...
