Children of a Forgotten Age

Introduction
It has been 20 years since that day. The day that ended human civilization. It would define not only the 21st century, but human history forever. This is not only about the present chaos that still persists, but also the past, and all that our generation took for granted.

The Forgotten Age
The forgotten age, or as it was known, the 2010s, was an unparalleled age of prosperity for many. People lived longer, and indulged themselves in many forms of entertainment. Although many suffered in third world countries due to lack of food, water, etc; humanity was thriving. People only cared about little things such as social media drama, memes, and video games. No one would be prepared for what happened next. The date was February 17th, 2020. It was the end of the forgotten age, and the beginning of a new, chaotic age.

February 17th, 2020
On this date, everybody that was 18 or older had suddenly vanished from the face of the earth. Many people were shocked as their family and some of their friends had suddenly disappeared. Within the first 7 hours of the vanishing, power goes out around the world as there is no one to manage and operate power plants. Around 1/2 of the nuclear power plants successfully enter safe mode within 48 hours, although some continue to run. Wind and solar power eventually stop working within 7 days. Hydroelectric power continues to work in areas such as the Hoover dam in America or the Three Gorges Dam in China.

One week since the vanishing
A mass migration of surviving children and teenagers into rural areas and areas with hydroelectric or working nuclear power occurs around the world as millions flee from cities that are running low on resources such as food, water, and electricity. Areas powered by major dams are now refugee camps for the millions who have fled the now almost empty cities. There is no order that can stop the migrations. All nations and economies have just ceased to exist. Many groups of survivors have managed to get their hands on weapons stolen from military bases and people's homes, resulting in major incidents of armed violence between refugees and the people who were being overrun. Most major subway stations have been flooded as there is no one to operate the pumps that keep water out. Most pets and livestock are either in a roofless fight for survival in the open world or they have died of starvation and or dehydration. Many people in third world countries have also starved to death due to the lack of foreign aid. Things were already bad. But then, things got worse.

Four weeks since the vanishing
Surviving teenagers and children who could farm and raise were put to work. Supermarket shelves in developed countries are either empty or filled with rotting food. Disaster strikes as the cooling water in nuclear power plants has evaporated by now, resulting in massive nuclear meltdowns across the planet. Heavy amounts of radiation are released into areas such as the US, EU, China, and India. Millions die of radiation poisoning within the coming weeks. Those who survive the radiation poisoning are either heavily weakened, barely affected, or (worse) mutated. Survivors now have to fight off the mutant species that were created from this event. Groups start banding together into small factions and tribes in order to defend themselves from the mutants. Animals have escaped from zoos and are now roaming the almost abandoned cities, which are inhabited by only a few plucky survivors that now live a hunter gatherer lifestyle.

One year since the vanishing
The human population has been reduced to around 1.5 billion people. Radiation has subsided In most areas. In some rural areas, survivors have formed settlements and small villages. The largest settlements only have around 800-1,000 people. Some intelligent survivors have managed to get working solar panels in their settlements. Without major industries; air, water, and land become cleaner than they were in the forgotten age. Wildlife is now thriving in many of the former cities of the world. Populations of many endangered species start to increase without human intervention. Major cities have been abandoned by humanity as nature returns to these areas. Mutants are still a major threat to life and property for the survivors. Roads are starting to be overrun with vegetation in many areas. Packs of feral dogs and cats now roam many parts of North America. Barter economies become common in the new settlements. Settlements would often trade with each other for goods and services. Storms have caused wildfires to burn without anyone to stop them. Even cities like San Francisco, Rome, and Kyoto suffer damage from major fires. Many of the more religious survivors believe that they were kept on earth to do holy work for their god. Humanity has entered into a new dark ages already.

Ten years since the vanishing
Settlements have expanded significantly for the past 9 years. Settlements have expanded and merged into larger towns and small city states. The skyscrapers of the former cities still stand, although most cities are overrun by vegetation. Some areas now have real economies and even some forms of currency. The largest city states can now have as many as 100,000 people. However, it is not completely peaceful. There are now actual wars between city states over resources and old technology. Most city states are autocratic regimes, while some are more democratic. Many city states have working electricity, water, and internet. There are now markets, fire departments, police forces, organized military forces, governments, health services, education, restaurants, and even some cable TV providers. Food becomes more available in more areas. However, mutants and nomadic hordes are still causing problems for less developed areas. But that does not matter. Society exists, but is unstable.

Twenty years since the vanishing
it is now 2040. By now, city states have expanded to form nations. These new nations begin to conquer land and bring order and peace into new territories. Expeditions into the former cities reveal that plant and animal life have flourished since the vanishing. Large numbers of mutants still roam in areas around the nuclear meltdown sites across the world. Wars between nations start up as competition for resources still creates problems for humanity. Nomads are still a problem as they continue to ransack small towns and villages. Satellites from the forgotten age are now starting to deorbit and crash into rural areas. Various ideologies now rule the new nations. From Dictatorships to Republics, and Communism to Fascism. The world population has rebounded back to around 1.7 billion people. Even the former third world is recovering from the vanishing. However, there are some issues. Including the fact that some nations and individuals are on the verge of rediscovering the world's nuclear arsenals. Some areas are still in a constant state of anarchy as some areas have still not recovered from the vanishing. Various diseases such as the flu have become a major cause of death.

New Paris Times

The New French Republic has announced their launch of 'Project Zephyr', an attempt to cross the infamous line of Radiation known as the 'Geiger Line' forming the Southwestern border of New France. The Project is headed by agents of The Guard of The Republic, with naval transports bringing the agents into the formerly radiated zone, which has now been deemed as 'Acceptible' for humans to survive in. More details when they come.
