The Sea-Blessed

Banks of the Skybright River
Year of Sundered Sky
In the lush green opening of the great tree, in the outskirts of the Sea-Blessed village. A den of both man and wolf laid in the open. It was no natural den either, but one of sticks and cloth. Often throughout the day, it was left abandoned as the resident hunted for prey and work, but not this morning.

That was because the dwelling, usually relatively abandoned, now saw more than its usual amount of inhabitants. Well, not inhabitants exactly - visitors. Emilia, the worker that Lucius had labored alongside in the past year, was back to talk to the outlander. She had appeared to take a shine to the young man, feeling part of his disconnect from the tribe due to her own origin beyond the ranks of the Sea-Blessed. She had been the one who patiently talked him through the vagaries of the complicated melodic speech of the tribe, not terribly different than his own, but more concerned with tonal vagaries than that of his former people.

“It is strange how you don’t talk about your family, Master Crafter.” spoke the young blonde lass, a twinkle in her eye. Master Crafter. A fair approximation of his skills, compared to those of the Sea-Blessed, but said in jest nonetheless. The Sea-Blessed were not a taciturn folk, happy to meander from cradle to grave without a joke or folly.

Her own story was not so strange. Emilia had wandered alone for nearly three years before being found by a chance expedition from the coast, after her father who had raised her alone had succumbed to breakbone fever. Perhaps her story would have ended in tragedy, if she had had to contend with a solitary existence for much longer. But her own lack of history made her very curious after the story of the young crafter.

The question caused Lucius to wince. Seldom did he enjoy talking about his family, but he figured to share in his story nonetheless. "I was the second son of my clan- er, tribe. Me and my brother never had gotten along, but nonetheless we got through life just fine enough with each other. It was until he became the chieftain that when things truly changed. He had assigned me to make new tools to replace the old ones that he inherited for his title. After pouring sleepless nights ensuring perfection I gifted them to the leader, only to find out days later that they had broken. For my-" he paused hesitating.

Emilia tutted. “Well, that sounds terrible. Strange how you and your brother had such a hierarchy. We choose our leader by a show of hands, the one who we believe the Father has best ordained to lead the tribe into the future. I would never have to craft anything on Jarn’s orders - I just do as I feel best, with some consultation with the others.”

"Our tribe isn't one that relies on local spirits. It's laws and tradition was made by the Ancestor Father," said Lucius explaining the inner workings of his former tribes.

The crafter merely nodded noncommittally. “All men know the Father, in their hearts. He guides us most closely as his favored children, but he is Father to all of us. As Maker and Shaper of the world, there are none who do not walk in his sight, your clan included.”

Lucius wondered carefully but with curiosity, "I have never heard of a spirit that power as of yet."

Emilia laughed slightly. “Nor shall you hear of another. The Father watches over all - the trees, the rivers, the ocean, his people. There is no one greater - the Father, he is the master.”

She then shook her head. “Anyway, I’m not just here to chat, though I do enjoy our talks. Vittoria told me at dinner yesterday that there is a small stash of copper she has, beaten and ready for shaping. She and Jarn are curious what you can do with it, if you feel like forging and smithing.”

Perhaps this being was a ruler among spirits, Lucius had mused, before shifting his thoughts to Emilia's offer. "I think I'd like to give it a try," he said contemplatively, "I've been looking forward to start crafting again."

Year of Foreign Tongues

The gleaming copper pickaxe was tough and weighty in Emilia’s hand, heavy and sturdy. It glistened with a strange silvery patina, something that the Sea-Blessed had been noticing in their tools recently, and which the new addition to the tribe - named Donn - had extolled as particularly beneficial. His old tribe, lost many years ago, had forged copper tools too, but they had never been as fine or strong as those of the sunset-metal which the Father had given to his chosen.

“This is a fine weapon, a finer tool.” marveled Emilia. Even Jarn or Vittoria, the most skilled artisans of the tribe, would have made a cruder implement than that which Lucius had managed in a mere winter of crafting. “You should make other weapons, we have much need of better aids for the labors of sweat and brow.”

“If that is what the tribe wants me to do, then it will be done,” said Lucius simply but then he added briefly, “To receive praise from my work is great, I have not experienced that in a long time, a very long time.”

He becomes pauses, worried he said to much. Back in his clan, such informal talk in relation to work was frowned upon. Perhaps it was ok, to say such things. The Sea-Blessed certainly were less formal and demanding then his clan, but it still made him uncomfortable. So used was he to the demanding life of the Arkon’s. To change the conversation, he glances at the foreigner who he had never seen before.

“I don’t think I’ve seen that person before,” he said perhaps he was an outsider somewhat like him.

The other worker nodded. “I don’t know exactly who they are. They came wandering down the river just two nights passed, you must have missed them.” Emilia’s eyes were somewhat hooded as she spoke - perhaps she didn’t approve of something about the outsider, or was just concerned about what their presence meant.

“Jarn and Maria have spent most of the last two evenings shut up with them inside a bivouac within the camp’s walls, trying to make heads or tails of whatever their speech is. It is actually pretty funny. I spoke quite normally when I joined the tribe, Donn was pretty close too, and you didn’t even sound that silly. But this outlander, their speech strikes me as akin to the lowing of bugling deer and the glug-glug of fish than words of a man.” She shook her head.

“Anyway, hopefully they come from a long way away and won’t bother us much. It is a wide world. There is plenty of space the Father made to share.”

A smile touched her lips as the brunette leaned forward, holding out the pickaxe as her mood changed.

“Don’t think I’m making something out of nothing when I say this tool is good, Lucius. Vittoria has been working with sunset-stone for almost a dozen winters, and she does not have your skill with its shaping. You have a gift from the Father, and it does not honor him to be ashamed of your talents. They were given to you to be used, not hidden.”

With a wide wink Emilia stood. “You’ve delayed me long enough! I’m headed over the Whitehills to the shores of the Endless; you know how the stews have been uncommonly good lately? That’s salt that is in the meat, delicious. You might not have seen how we harvest it, but I’m going to use your pickaxe to build a pond to catch the sea-water, lined with stones to trap the highest tides. Then I won’t have to manually harvest the salt, merely visit every few weeks to glean the trapped mineral from the pool. Look forward to tastier meals to come!”

Away the laborer went whistling an air that Lucius did not recognize, obviously content with her lot in life.

Eliphas Clan

The sheep had been tamed, much to both the clan's and especially Jabe's delight. A small herd, a few head large, following an especially friendly horned male had taken to staying near the camp and did not flee like the others did when they were approached by Jabe. After a few attempts at feeding them succeeded, the sheep took to Jabe well enough that they came into the camp. They were skittish initially of the campfire at the center of camp, but after a few months they were a common sight around the camp, and didn't stay too far from camp. Hillin, after a few years of hunting turkeys, jumped at the opportunity to guide and look after the small herd. Jass would take to hunting the undomesticated herds that still roamed the woodlands, with the assistance of Eli.

Jabe and his mother diverged in interests after the Sheep breakthrough. Jabe was more interested in the mundane, resuming his research into making the green stones around the woodlands into something useful. Mabe would return to her prayer and search for the mystic. Though the earlier attempts had failed, now seemed a prudent time to resume research with the clan's command of nature growing.

Etha would spend the year training little Mari in the ways of craftsmanship. The daughter who had caused so much drama earlier now wished to take after he mother, but her mother was dedicated to the berry garden at then time. Thus, Etha, despite her initial misgivings, would be the one to guide the girl into womanhood.

The previous year, strangers arrived from the Northwest and spoke a language similar enough to their own that the Silver River Tribe understood they called themselves the Sea-Blessed. Understanding of the flow and current of the Silver River suggested to them that these people were likely living further down the Silver River itself, making them kin of sorts. While no one would journey out to this new tribe this year, plans were being made to travel that way with warm clothing to trade for whatever goods they had available in the future. For that purpose, more Llamas would be needed and a way to carry goods on the Llamas would need to be made. With these innovations, the people of the Silver River Tribe would be more able to trade with their two closest neighbors.

The Mara River

Chief Jaswant was awakened by the sound of crying babes. He walked toward the sound of the children as Vaidhei and Alia held and fed giving them the love and attention that a youngling needed to survive the brutal harshness of this world. Kavuri was weeping over the loss of her son tears flowing down her rosy red cheeks as her child had departed this world to join the Great Khai's in Other World. When her baby died she held him to her breast in a feeble and sad attempt to feed and nurture him.

"Why, why, why?" She said for all hours of all days of the week. The other women comforted her and said that the Great Khai would grant another child and that she would be blessed with many children in the future. The wound left by the death of her unnamed child would be with her for all time but the care and empathy of her fellow tribesmen would help her recover.

Chief Jaswant felt her pain and sorrow, but such was the way of this world. As Chief, he was tasked by the Great Khai who sang in the heavens to lead and protect the Arameri. To attend to the song, to lead his people in prayer every day and every night. His forefathers had lived by the Mara River for countless generations, worshipping the Great Song and cherishing the music of the world. The song of birds in flight, the howl of the wolves, and peaceful flow of the great river.

Now that four children had survived their first winter it was time for the great naming ceremony under the Chorus of the Stars. A ritual that dated back countless centuries in the Arameri homeland where the tribesmen would sing the name of the youth and add it to the stars. The sole surviving boy would forever be known as Ravi, he had a fire in his eyes and Chief Jaswant sang that he would be a warrior as he was and his father and his father before him dating back to the Age of Song. Ravi's sister would be a wise woman known as Kumari as her mother was and her mother's mother and son on till the time of the Chorus itself. Alia blessed by the Khais that her two daughters survived would sing their names.

Aasami and Arya. They would be tenders of the earth blessed was the role. So was the Chorus of the Stars a wonderous celebration where new life would be recognized and accepted by the tribe.

The Ciaráin

Last year proved to be a successful one despite some shortcomings. Dyfri with some help from Colm has managed to find a way to grow the mushrooms that grow here. Creating a garden for mushrooms and Dyfri was happy that his project had finally borne fruit. Colm even more so since it was his first project and is eager to help Dyfri again with another project. Since Eirnín has been preoccupied with learning more about the magic that he has been blessed with. Dyfri had taken up Eirnín's desire to tame the Guar that lives in the north. The new huts are still being built by Ruari and is confident that they will be done within the year. Meibhín and Dyfri having been trying to have a child of their own but, their attempts so far have been in failure. They will still try to have a child regardless and are hopeful for the future. Eirnín failure to discover a way to heal with elemental magic has not deterred him and seeks to find a way to heal with his new magic. The rest continue with their duties from last year and hopes are high for the future.

Another tribe, this one more familiar to the people of the Sea-Blessed. They spoke the Father's tongue almost flawlessly, and seemed almost as numerous as the people of the eastern coasts, though of a rather different persuasion when it came to their priorities. Unlike the primitive pelts that the dwellers in the temperate shores, they wore woven clothing of some strange provenance, and still used tools of flint and stone. It seemed the world was full of more men and women closer than the Sea-Blessed had initially thought, and there was much to be done still if they wished to be prepared for any dangers which might assail the camp.

The Pentakuk, Year 17

"Kallik!" Called the young woman, trudging back to their home with a bundle of sticks in hand. "Have you done what I had asked?" She seemed impatient, exhausted. As her sister spent the majority of her days nursing her sweet Koda- Uki had to take up her chores - leaving her temper short, and her brow wet with beads of sweat, despite the chilling air of a winter's day. "Ah! My sister-love! You are home at last." The young man replied, smirking. He sat outside the tent with a bone needle in-hand, sewing his infant son a new swaddle to keep warm at night. Uki only shook her head, and rolled her eyes- before pushing past the deerskin curtain of their hut, and into the warm must inside. "Ah, sister! Welcome back." The young mother called, breastfeeding her young cub in the light of the embers. "And how strong you are- to bring so much in one trip! Almost enough for the whole day, perhaps?" Uki smiled, and dropped the pile of dry sticks beside the hearth in the center, splitting one the size of her forearm and placing it upon the scortching stones, catching ablaze within seconds. "... The ashes have not been collected in a while. I will have to do that before nightfall." Nuniq chided her, and shook her head, frowning. "All you do is work all day, sister, why not rest? You are covered in sweat and mud, and your bones must be sore from labors." "Easy for you to say, Immuq-Aana, you do not know the depths of labor needed when one of your shelter-kin is occupied." "Oh stop that!" Called Nuniq, setting her now sleeping child down in the bedding beside her. "You have done enough - even if there is more to be done. Now sit with me- I missed you." She reached up with both hands, and pulled Uki down into the nest of nettle and fur, curling up against her. "You know I have not slept one night since Koda was born! Do not give me such talk of not knowing what labor must be done!" Uki sighed, and removed her hide coat, before using it as a blanket, curled up with her sister as they had done since childhood. "I suppose I am just jealous, how come you have had our Ugi give you a child, and I none? It is not fair..." She pouted, and turned to face her sister. "Give it time, all will be well. Perhaps tonight we will have him lay, hm? Now rest - I know exactly what to do to make him ready to give you a child." She gave her sister a little smirk, and pushed herself up - before leaving the cave-like tent they called home, leaving Uki to drift off to sleep after a long and hard day.
