This is because the Xanthians were masters of guerrilla warfare and struck from the thick forests of their native homeland when attacking the legionnaires. In the end, the Emperor would annex Xanthos by having his daughter married to the ruler of the land. Thus all Xanthian lieges earned the title of Prince as symbol of their voluntary status within the realm.

After claiming a peasants bride to fornicate with the peasants had had enough and soon revolted. In the town of Xanthos, the uprising was born, and Marcus Scipio was sent to lead his soldiers to quell the rebellion. He arrived but he soon felt the plight of the peasants their misery, at the hands of a maniacal nobleman for he himself was a simple farmer. Marcus Scipio lead his retinue to the manor where Galinus resided and killed Prince Galnius for his crimes. A moot was soon called, and the nobles soon arrived to vote for a new Prince to lead the province. After seven days and nights the lords voted for Marcus to lead the province for his heroics.Marcus was shocked but he accepted the role with a sense of pride and duty to his people. There might be some leftover rules in the rulebook that need clearing out. Let me know if you find anything that does not make sense.

Name: Earl Raewald 'The Winter Duke' Eadweald
Appearance:
Image

Gender: Male
Age: 36
House: House Eadweald
Colors: Red, white and black
Faith: The cross
Province: The Earldom of Anglthorn(XXIV ) - Anglthorn has long been one of the more unusual provinces of the Empire, it was subjugated early in Imperial history and has in it's time as a subjugated province received more than a fair share of Imperial colonists whom were more than willing to find a use for the vast tracks of fertile empty farmland not exploited by the sparse population of Anglthorn. As a result a curious blend of pseudo-imperial/Native culture developed within the province, it could be seen from the grandiose way the people of Anglthorn construct their towns and monuments to the odd religious customs of the province blending the faith of the cross with the native pagan faith. Most assume that this province would be easier to control however the people of Anglthorn have always had a belief that their undeveloped and poor rural province should have a greater say in Imperial politics leading to a number of failed rebellions and harsh retributions.
Family: Earl Abrecan Eadweald| Farther (deceased), Lady Cate Eadweald| Mother (deceased), Baron Geraint 'the black hand' Eadweald| brother (35), Lady Aedre | Wife (30), Ryce Eadweald| Son (8)
Royal: No
Trait: Merchant
Biography: House Eadweald despite it's lacklustre treasury, disgruntled populace and unpleasant province is certainly one of the most arrogant and proud in the entire empire, they get this pride from the fact that they can trace their ancestry back to one of the most famed generals of the early empire: Otto Eadweald, a man who so famously brought a fair bit of the empire's border provinces under Imperial domination. Of course the Eadweald family always manage to forget to mention that Otto and his entire family had been exiled Anglthorn for attempting to take the throne by force.

Until recent years the province of Anglthorn had been ruled by Earl Abrecan Eadweald who governed in the traditional Eadweald way: with an iron fist, rebellion and discontent was not tolerated however while this did keep the province at bay it fails to turn the province into any kind of profitable venture. Earl Abrecan's two sons had always been fairly disgruntled at the monetary weakness of their family and by the time both were of legal age they had left the earldom and had headed to seek wealth and fortune: Raewald the eldest headed for the southern merchant cities to try his hand at trading, Geraint the younger of the two headed North to the pagan provinces to fight alongside the holy orders up there against the heathens. Upon Earl Abrecan's death the two brothers raced home. As the eldest Raewald became Earl and began to implement his own ideas on how money should be generated, he called his new regime: inventive economics, the masses called his economics robbery. His brother was awarded with a small barony and began implementing his peculiar ideas of militarising the population. And so the age of the tyrant ended in Anglthorn and so began the age of the kleptocrat and fanatic.

Name: Arkadios Kosmas
Appearance:
Image

Gender: Male
Age: 27
House: House Kosmas
Colors: Orange and Blue
Faith: The Serpent (think a heresy of some sorts of The Cross, if The Cross is mainstream Christianity then The Serpent is some variant of Gnosticism, feel free to use a pagan faith tree for it as it's probably synthesized with those faiths to some degree)
Province: VIII, The Triple Rivers (colloquially known as the Triangle due to how the rivers kinda form a triangle)
Family: Father Neophytos Kosmos (dead due to disease), Mother Helena Kosmos (Dead due to disease), Sister Sophia Kosmos (Alive, 24)
Royal: No
Trait: Priest
Biography: Ever since the collapse of the empire, many dissident religious sects have existed and flourished out where the main Church of The Cross was weak, The Serpent is one of them. Having a heretical take on The Cross ever since the councils, they escaped to the edge of the known empire, towards the protective rivers of the Triple Rivers. They hid quietly for much time, existing among the local peasantry quietly, biding their time for an opportunity to take power. In 895 AD an opportunity surfaced, the peasants were angry at an incursion by the local lord, increased taxes on grain and what not, the usual incursion. However this time, The Serpent had prepared. The new, young head of the sect, Arkadios Kosmas, desired more than just a hidden existence, and had previously integrated agents of The Serpent into the castle. Speaking as the local priest of the peasants, Kosmas had riled them up into a rebellious nature, armed them with basic arms, and set off towards the castle. Normally a weak rebellion such as this would've been crushed, but preparations had been made. Poison slipped into the castle water supplies, equipment damaged, and the gates opened, presumed by peasants to be servants who sympathized with the peasant cause. The peasants marched into the castle, killed any remaining resistance, and slaughtered their lord. Taking advantage of the situation, Kosmas used his leadership position as priest to establish himself as the new lord of the province. Upon establishing power, he set upon consolidating his power in the province for a few years. In 900 AD, after his power was consolidated, Kosmos began to look outside the Triple Rivers and onto the nearby lands.

Name: Grand Captain Athanaric One-Eye
Appearance: An old, wizened veteran mercenary, one eye clouded over after a wound leaving the left side of old Athanaric's face mangled.
Gender: Male
Age: 37
House: The Sons of Black Thoric.
Colors: Red and Black
Faith: The men of the Grafmarch are as tightly bound to the faith of the cross.
Province: VII - The Mountains of Grafmarch - A land of fertile mountain valleys surrounded by thickly forested and foreboding grey alps. The land is hard, though the valleys see prosperous agricultural villages and the forests yield fine timber, and its men and women are harder still, dwelling in wide ranging, self-governing villages lead by councils and by elected Burgrafs. The men of the mountains fight to defend their homes, or serve abroad as mercenaries when they can afford to, and it is a despicable pauper indeed who has not taken a life in war by the time of his wedding.
Family: Athanaric is Grand-Captain by virtue of election by the villages, but he rules as Margrave of the Grafmarch by election by his own kin as tanists.
Royal: The men of the Grafmarch will not suffer kings in their mountains, even if they bow before them abroad. If any son of Black Thoric's blood has ever had truly imperial blood, he would rather it be drained by leeches than that it ever see a crown upon his head.
Trait: Military Planner
Biography: The Grafmarch mountains were scarcely controlled by the empire, even in the old days. The narrow defiles, thick woods and goat paths of the mountains made it all but impossible to bring the stalwart, grey-eyed natives to heel. The full force of imperial might was brought to bear on the mountains more than once, though, and ultimately the men of the Grafmarch broke before they bowed, only being spared for their usefulness as auxiliaries and as a source of hardy manpower. The men of the Grafmarch said, as they drank their ale in the empire's military camps, that they had surrendered only when none had left any sons but their firstborn, when the rest had fought their last. When the empire fell away, then, it is hardly surprising that they were eager to return to their freedom. The men of the mountain villages, though, had plenty of fighting to do to win it. Lords and foreign kings alike have tried to impose themselves on the Grafmarch for centuries in these dark ages, and the mountain passes are washed with blood.

The stories told by wandering skalds describe Black Thoric as the man who finally cast out the last prince from the mountains, slaying him with his bare hands and crushing his bones into the rocks before chasing his lackeys out and wedding his daughter, claiming the dead prince's title of Margrave for himself and declaring that henceforth the mountains would be ruled by their own, unless the foe wished to add more skulls to the cairns of Greymark Pass. Generations later, Athanaric was born to the broadly spread line of Black Thoric. Winning renown as a mercenary fighting abroad in an age of warfare, he returned to his homeland a hero at 30, and lead the defense of the realm against more would-be tyrants, barbarians and brigands, ultimately claiming the dormant Margraviate left by Thoric, and being acclaimed Grand Captain by his soldiers. The wizened, one-eyed old soldier stands now to defend forever the freedom of the Grafmarch. Though he might bow beyond the march, never does a proud Grafin man touch his knees to his own dirt, even before God.

I'm certain I'm just being a pillock, but just to ask, how do resources work? I'm aware they're preconditions for certain buildings, but how does one go about getting wood for construction from the lumber resource on the map?

Once the IC is up, there will be a "regional market" where you can convert resources to money or the other way around. Food, wood and stone will go for 2 - 3 coins each, Iron at 5, Wine at 7, but the prices will fluctuate based on supply and demand!
