“I know this might seem like overkill, but we need more details in political headquarters and polls stations once an election comes up.”

Anne Lyksborg went to the milkshake bar just outside Parliament and placed an order for a salted caramel milkshake.

She had conceded victory to the SHAPC after wrapping up her campaign to be Commissioner for Fort Ulrika. While they hadn’t won, this was still a great result for them. Ten years ago they were a radical fringe party. Now they had almost won the mayoralty of the island’s largest town and capital city, and were almost certain to enter the shadow cabinet.

She was also uncertain as to the new government’s longevity. If it collapsed they would likely be launched into ministerial office as part of a new government.

Juliette Hopp had been hearing about the new milkshake place for a while, and finally found the time to check it out. She took a bus into the belly of the beast, surrounded by the archaic buildings of government. As she entered the milkshake bar she noticed Anne Lyksborg placing an order.

She approached excitedly, and said "Mrs. Lyksborg?" She quickly extended a hand. "You ran such a good campaign. I'm not sure if you remember, but you were actually a guest lecturer for a few of my political science courses."

Lyksborg looked up from her milkshake and at Hopp.

"Thank you. You ran a very good campaign too.

I think I do remember seeing you in some of my lectures - were you there in my European Politics module?"

“No, you didn’t miss a meeting,” assured James, stepping inside the room. “I just want to know what you’ve done regarding the attack on the Conservative headquarters,” he continued.

“I know this might seem like overkill, but we need more details in political headquarters and polls stations once an election comes up.”

"If you might give me a moment, sir."

Svensson dug through file folders, pulling out the revalent blue folder, and sifted through the paperwork.

"Regarding the identity of the person or persons responsible for the attack, that is yet uncertain. We had detained a suspect, but he had a clear, corroborated alibi, so we were forced to let him go. Fear not, sir, we are still on the lookout, though there seems to be little evidence tieing any one person to the attack.

"Now, regarding increased security. After my announcement, my office did indeed raise security around polling stations. In fact, we more than doubled security in areas near the attack, as well as other large polling places. Of course, if you feel that this amount of security was inadequate during election time, I am certainly more than willing to meet with yourself or your office to hash out a more suitable plan."

Svensson paused. "Is that all I can do for you, sir?"

“I think the security was great,” James answered. “There was little violence, and any violence that had arisen was suppressed in a timely manner. I’m going to meet with some members of parliament in a while week, or perhaps speak in front of the whole chamber,” James said, changing his tone since he was stressed. “I don’t care what it takes, in a week I want the attackers... or some of them. Or ANYONE affiliated with them for god’s sake!” James sighed, calming down. “I’m sorry, it’s just that I’ll look like an idiot if I tell the government and the public that we don’t even have a suspect. If we don’t catch him in a week, we’ve lost him for good. How is it possible that we have an entire capable police force, but no suspect detained?” James had fully calmed down, and spoke calmly since he was not the type of person to yell.

Svensson stiffened his back and narrowed his eyes. He thought of digging up another file, but then decided against it. He heeded every remark and drew his hands forward. Once the Commissioner had finished, Svensson allowed for a long pause, his hard, tired breaths punctuating the awkward silence.

"Mr. Commissioner, while I appreciate your enthusiam to catch the person or persons responsible, I simply cannot be constrained to a week-long time limit. It is an indelible fact that the arm of justice moves slowly, often unbearably so. I assure you that we are working around the clock to bring the attackers to justice and that my office shall keep yours appraised of many developments or arrests. In these times, this department would highly appreciate your patience."

“I’m sorry for yelling, I didn’t mean to yell. The only problem is that we’re both going to look like idiots when the government asks us what we have. We have a capable police force, yet we haven’t caught them. I’ll remove the limit, but justice doesn’t work slowly. Every day gives them time to erase evidence. If we take too long, consider them gone. After every mass attack, the attackers are always brought to justice in a week or two. I don’t see why it should be any different here. I don’t want to put pressure on you. You are a great police Chief, so I trust you with the case. Good luck.”
