While Archipelago's hypotheticals are a little silly, someone will need to write a tax code eventually to ensure that taxation can be administered and that fraud can be prosecuted.

Yes.

In that case, you are still not reducing your income by donating. You are reducing your income by being paid less. Where the difference goes is irrelevant.

In the end, I'm not particularly worried about the possibility that people might try to avoid taxes by making less money. It's self-defeating because there is no way to save more on income tax than you lose in reduced income.

(it's not even a great way to go about it, because that $5k would likely be taxed at a higher rate if the business kept it rather than paying it in salaries/wages)
