The Story

An age of warring states, the great Empire of Ying as decayed into civil war. Terrible famine sweeps the southern provinces, a peasant warlord Song Zhi as assumed power and taken control of the province of Beifeng under the rebel group known as the Red Turban Army. From his home province, he as conquered other southern provinces and formed a new dynasty to challenge the Emperor. In the northern provinces, a drunken guardsman allowed the Grand Wall to be breached by nomadic barbarians. Raided by horsemen and aid from a distant Emperor not coming Prefect Zhao Zan of the northern prefecture seized power and raised his own armies to halt the barbarian march.

In the great halls of Zhai Cheng, the mad Emperor Sun Bao sits on the Dragon Throne, hiding behind the thick walls of the Impenetrable City. How long can the Emperor survive before the walls come crumbling down and his enemies end his dynasty?

Even worse, as the empire fights amongst each other, the Horde gathers in the far north. Long have the barbarians waited for this moment, with the empire weak and divided, charismatic chiefs gather their warriors, and pillage and rape the northern provinces growing fat from the easy pickings to be had.

Ying is at a crossroads and civil war that will decide the fate of the empire. Who will claim the Mandate of Heaven and restore order? Northern and southern states vie for supremacy to reunify the lands. It is up to you to help determine the destiny of Ying. To support one of these petty warlords would offer great rewards, as well as to profit from the break down of law, or to claim your own dynasty. To forge a new dynasty is not an easy task, one needs men of arms, as well as silver to seize the Dragon Throne, and become the new Emperor.

But the rewards are great, and to claim the Dragon Throne, would allow one to create a dynasty to stand the test of time. Will you succeed in your quest for wealth and power? Or will you fall like so many before you dying in famine, and endless wars, a pawn of warlords. The choice is yours!

Mechanics

Really simple mechanics, you post ONE action per turn, I roll dice to determine if you succeeded or not. Depending on your starting items, you'll either have a great shot of success or failure. For example, if your a warlord wanting to expand and you send 100 soldiers to seize a neighboring province you'll either succeed or fail depending on how well armed that province is and the resolve of your men. Many actions can be made to improve your odds of success. Depending on how well you write your ideas, you'll have better chances to succeed and the more creative and unusual the better.

The Sun Dynasty

Image

The Sun Dynasty was founded in the Age 400 after the Jia Dynasty before it. General Sun Tao led his soldiers from the northern provinces and conquered all of Ying except for Zhai Cheng the Indomitable City. The Jia Emperor at that time was a cruel and vindictive man who oppressed the peasants, while Sun Tao was unable to breach the walls, the peasants within the city revolted, and killed the emperor, opening the gates so that Sun Tao could enter. With the Jia Dynasty disbanded Emperor Tao set in motion a golden age for the Ying Empire. Yet in the last hundred years, the Sun Dynasty has been ruled by a string of weak and ineffective emperors culminating in the rule of Emperor Sun Bao, a man who seldom leaves his quarters in the Forbidden Palace leading rule to scheming eunuchs, who plot more than rule...

Image

The seat of the Dragon Throne where the Emperor rules with fear in his heart. Many dynasties have ruled all of the Great Ying Empire from this city. It is by far the largest city in the entire world, home to over a million people. Though situated in an arid zone it sits above a bountiful underground lake network feeding the numerous farms within its heartland, and a complex network of aqudects provides the city proper with water from the mountains. The Great Walls that surround this city are thick, and sturdy few invaders have breached it. Any character who claims the Impenetrable City instantly wins the game. Due to the sheer size of this city, unlike other towns, it is divided into numerous districts.

Market District

Thronged with trade goods, Zhai Cheng even in times of war, is a nexus of trade, and commerce. As such many goods may be brought here, though scarcity as reigned as Warlord Song Zhi, has launched numerous assaults on the caravans feeding the city.+1 Trade when merchants barter here.
Temple District

Home to the Dao Temple, monks, gathered here may find their power and spirituality increased.+1 Spirit here. Non-monks may cultivate the Dao here by meditating to gain enlightenment but it is a hard and near impossible task, but fulfilling in the end.

Middle Ring District

Home to the Zhai Cheng's middle class. Many upscale houses and restaurants line the streets of this prosperous and wealthy district. It is also home to the empires banking system. Here banks and money lenders loan out paper cash mainly to government officials to construct public works. Lower-ranking officials can be recruited from here.

Upper Ring District

The inner walls of the Impenetrable city. The wealthy noble lords and scholars of the empire reside here. Recruiting talent from here could be a boon if one holds the coin for such endeavors.

Lower Ring District

Home to the peasants who make up an overwhelming majority of the city. Here numerous criminal orders and syndicates thrive the Lower Ring District is the beating heart of the Ying criminal underworld. Drug dealers, assassins, vagabonds, will find themselves at home here.

Foreigner District

Being such a large and important city there's no surprise that Zhai Cheng as a sizeable foreigner populace. Made up of merchants and travelers many unique items can be brought here from the lands far west and south of Ying.

Farm Capiticty
[10/10]

A land of northern steppes and snow, here the Grand Wall protects Ying from the barbarian hordes. That is until the Walls where breached, and the ravenous nomadic horsemen stormed the north thus Zhao Zan is more concerned with dealing with the hordes then claiming the Throne at least for now. Right now the North and Hordes are equal in strength, but anything could tip the scales in favor of one side or the other.

Cities

Capitol of Feng

Hai Cheng (Port)

City of Hulan

Farm Capitcity
[5/5] Farms

The temperate and subtropical lands of the south.A disease that swept the rice pappy fields crippled this land leading to mass starvation, and chaos. Warlord Song Zhi led a group of peasant rebels, against the officials of the land, seizing control of Beifeng and restoring the order. He claims that Emperor Sun Bao is illegitimate and as lost the Mandate of Heaven. Great general Song Zhi leads his armies, fights the Imperial forces, leading to much death and destruction. Many fear he can breach the walls of Zhai Cheng, with his numerous rebel soldiers, and terrible siege weapons.

One thing is certain this constant fighting weakens both sides, and if the North should fall to the Hordes, then both sides will surely be defeated, thus Song Zhi hopes for a quick victory or else.

Cities

Port City of Qinzhou

City of Gaoyu

Army/Company Maintance

Characters may come with either a COMPANY or ARMY.Depending on what type of group is being led different mechanics apply.

Merchants and Foreingers manage a Company a group of traders and explorers. For every five people under a merchants/foreigners command, one silver must be paid in wages per week. So by the first seven turns, 5 Silver is to be paid initially.

Horde Chiefs and Warlords command an Army. For Warlords who rule a rural province, their armies are maintained by the wealth and food generated by that province. For Horde Chiefs, they must either pillage or forage the land every seven turns or dire consequences are to be had.

Archtype

The archetype paints who you are as a person in this rich and varied world. Ying is an ancient land and traditional, and the type of person you create will have profound effects on how the Ying people react to you. For example, foreigners will have a harder time gaining the trust of the native Ying. Women will also have a harder time leading, this game is set in pre-modern times, but while male characters will have an easier time initially, women may find themselves capable of gaining influence and fame easier as a woman who takes up arms is more likely to gain more attention which can be beneficial down the road.

Ying Citizen- The standard citizen of the Middle Nation. You are a native of Ying, you've lived here your entire life, maybe you were a peasant farmer, an artisan, bureaucrat, criminal but now you've lost everything and are forced to start from scratch. Telegram me first and we can hatch out a suitable start for you. War grips the land, famine, and disease sweep the land, and the dead bodies of the fallen are everywhere. It is up to you to survive and succeed in this chaotic period of warring states. Depending on how you described your character you'll get appropriate items. RPG game start.

The Warlord--You are a feudal lord, either you have kept your loyalty to Emperor Sun Bao, or broken ties and sworn allegiance to Song Zhi or Zhao Zan. You may have even capitalized on the disharmony and formed your dynasty! Do be warned this is the most dangerous choice as the other warlords and the Emperor will seek to crush you once they have the chance. Either case you start with 250 silver, a small rural province, and 2,000 peasant soldiers at your command! There will be a limited amount of warlords.

Dao Monk--Through years of meditation, you have achieved balance and enlightenment. You have cultivated the dao and thus achieved an ability that many men lack. All Dao Monks are as light as a feather able to run at speeds far greater than man, walk on water, and jump great distances. Telegram me and we'll work out a unique Dao ability for your character. Dao Monks start with monk robes and a dao or changdao sword as a symbol of their membership of the Order. Monks may serve under feudal lords but cannot gain titles or land or marry. Start anywhere in the world.+1 Spirit Skill.

Merchant- You are a wealthy enterpriser wishing to profit in these disharmonious times. As such start either with a horse-drawn carriage, or sailing ship that allows one to carry trade goods.Whatever part of the world you land in you gain a unique resource that can be traded for profit in other parts of the world. Start with merchant garb 250 Silver and a company of 25 men. Start in any port city or Market District of Zhai Cheng.+1 Trade Skill.

Foreginer- Stranger in these lands through whatever means you have found yourself in the Far East. Perhaps you are a trader, wishing to acquire silk, and rare spices or a priest wishing to convert the easterners in whatever faith your homeland in the west preaches. Start with Foreign garb,200 Silver, and 25 Recruits. Ying rulers and officials view foreigners with suspicion. Start in any port city or Zhai Cheng Foreign District.+1 Foreigner Trait.

Horde War Chief- You are a nomadic chief, here to rape and pillage Ying for all she's worth! Ying is a wealthy land, and much riches can be had by pillaging the settlements of the south. Start with 3,500 Horde Horsemen armed and armored. Gain the ability to pillage settlements for a chance to gain wealth. +1 Horde Trait,+1 Foreigner Trait. There will be a limited amount of Horde Chiefs.

TRAVEL

Ying is a massive empire, with sweeping plains, snow-capped mountains, forested hills, and tropical jungles. As such traveling is an arduous task, and even the most skilled travelers will face challenges when traveling across the world. Characters by default can move one tile north, south, east or west when traveling per turn. Characters on ships may move two tiles per turn. Characters on a horse may travel two tiles, characters on roads may travel two tiles as well, while horse units on road tiles can travel three tiles.

EXPLORATION

Characters may explore the tiles that they reside on. All the major cities on listed on the map but there are still many more places of interest yet to be discovered. Exploration allows one to discover any bandit lairs, villages, towns, forts etc that may be of interest for conquest, exploitation, adventuring. There may also be ancient ruins as well. Adventurers can explore these ruins to find lost treasures or legendary items. Its best to be supplied and well armed as you never know what you may find.
RECRUITING

Recruiting is how one gains men. For Warlords, they may recruit from the provinces that they rule over but do be warned that the people may resist such efforts except for the young men who may be looking for adventure and opportunity. Still one doesn't want to deprive their agrarian provinces of manpower, as this can lead to famine if there aren't enough hands tending the fields. For Warlords talent is everything, and the most talented recruits are those of the educated classes. Arms, and soldiers are good and well but in order to rule Ying one must be advanced economically.

Scholar and Bureaucrat units are important in giving one an economic and technological edge. Scholars allow the construction of advanced weapons and may research new technologies of greater utility. Bureaucrats are important to increase tax efficiency and may help pass laws, that boost the productivity of the land. In this age of warring states educated units are prone to wandering the lands searching for lords who will treat them good. Those who offer the greatest amount of coin and benefits are liable to getting these special units but will find themselves competing with other lords.

For other players, they may gain recruits from cities and villages. Coin must be paid in exchange for men no one is foolhardy enough to risk their lives without it. Hordes can recruit from settlements they have brought to heel or may convince other nomads to join them.

I'm thinking about creating a Christian missionary. Does it exist in this universe or do I have to make one up?

Well, this is a fantasy world so I'd rather not have real religions such as Christianity, Islam etc.

You could certainly make up something similar! ^_^

Name: Monsignor Philippe Beauchamp

Appearance
Image

Gender: Male

Biography: Philippe Beauchamp was born in the village of Bocars-Tille in the hinterlands of the western continent to Guerinet and Reina Beauchamp. The Beauchamps were devout triumvirates ever faithful to their religion. At a young age, Philippe excelled in his academics, eventually taking up theology in the Pastoral College. The campus he was in was located near a volcano which soon erupted after several years. This incident left a mark in Philippe's faith- making it even more stronger than ever. After graduating, he was ordained as a Priest of the Triumvirate and served in many parishes of the Church.

His first year as priest he devoted his time to help the poor. He began to engage in charity work and delivered food and water to far-flung places. He eventually rose up rank becoming a Priest of Seniority then became a Bishop until he was offered the position of Monsignor by the Arch-Priest; the representative of the Triumvirate on Earth. Philippe Beauchamp first headed the Charity works ministry of the Church then was transferred to the Missionary ministry eventually becoming its Missionary-General.

After successful conversions in the south, Beauchamp heard of a land in the far east, a land of many people ripe for salvation. He was granted permission by the Arch-Priest to lead some 25 faithful to establish a mission to spread the good news of the Triumvirate God.

Archetype: Foreigner | Ecclesiastical Missionary-General of the Triumvirate

Starting Items: 10 crossbows, a copy of the Holy Writ and some apples.

It's scripture is called the holy writ- a 1000 page book containing the stories of the prophets, the people of the Triumvirate and the prophecies to come. The organization claiming to represent the Triumvirate is the Ecclesiarchy or the Church of the Triumvirate.

Name: Cai Zhen

Gender: Male

Biography: Cai Zhen was born into a family of the lower gentry in the southern province of Yueshan. As the last of three sons, Cai Zhen never had any expectation of the family inheritance. His father, Cai Li, being a feudal lord of very minor standing, provided the most overlooked of his male progeny with no more than a cursory education in calligraphy, philosophy, and the histories. Lacking, therefore, the academic grounding required of a scholar-bureaucrat, a seventeen year-old Cai Zhen had no recourse but to enlist in the Imperial Army.

Zhen at least had money enough for a horse, and so was afforded a place in the cavalry. Not long after enlisting, his regiment deployed north of the Grand Wall and operated in support of (nominally) allied barbarians against openly hostile ones. It was in the north that he learned to use a bow, and after several years of experience on the frontier, his skill was such that he was considered a master archer. He fought in a number of battles, mostly skirmishes rather than large engagements, but distinguished himself and rose to the rank of junhou, or Captain, commanding a company's worth of troopers.

Eventually his regiment cycled back to the south. Zhen was discharged and married his childhood sweetheart Wei Lin, a young woman of similar social standing. They retired to a small, quiet estate in the countryside of Yueshan, and Wei Lin bore a daughter.

Their peace was not to last, however. Barely three years into the marriage, famine swept the south. The peasant warlord Song Zhi took advantage of the chaos to rebel. Zhen was recalled to the imperial cavalry and led a company in the name of the Emperor. However, the imperial troops did not really have their heart in the fight, and, outnumbered by Song Zhi's Red Turban's, they were simply overwhelmed. The southern imperial army disintegrated at the Battle of Panzou, giving the rebel general full run of the south. Not long after, Red Turbans poured into Yueshan and burnt Zhen's home to the ground, killing his young family before he even returned to his home province.

Motivated more by vengeance and a hatred of the Red Turbans than by any loyalty to the useless Sun Bao, Zhen organized a band of army veterans and militant peasants to fight the Red Turbans running roughshod over their land. Although his force is small, numbering no more than thirty men at present, Zhen and his men have continually evaded capture over the past year and a half. But, seeing as how Song Zhi is triumphant in the south, they may soon make their way north to join themselves to a cause with some hope.

Right so I changed the numbers because this game being based on the Three Kingdoms Era larger armies, in my opinion, are justified in fact compared to more powerful warlords such as Song Zhi warlords and horde pcs will find themselves on the smaller side...

I have an idea but I want to hear your thoughts about it OP. A white western warlord with access to western technology? I assume this is set in the 1600s so gunpowder weapons would have been invented. If you want to know more just tell me OP.

Hmm, the technology level is early High Middle Ages, so gunpowder weapons no later than 1300s
