His boss, Robert House, was impressed with his work and sent him north to help show the employees in Michigan some of his techniques and give them tips while secretly claiming the invention as his own. While in the Detroit branch of RobCo, he built a pair of Securitrons for a demonstration, and showed the employees of his new cerebral interface which allowed him to control the robots with his brain. The RobCo employees were impressed, and Thomas earned a bonus. He used that bonus to build a bunker underground, a lab of sorts so that he could build and modify his inventions in peace.A hydroponics lab, a nuclear reactor with enough fuel to last a lifetime, a water purifier. It was almost self sufficient. When the bombs dropped in 2077, Polani was exposed to some radiation when in a poorly-constructed room that was insufficiently lead-lined. His body became frail, and even the most minor injuries left bruises. His Securitrons were modified with rad scanners, water collection, and storage containers to go outside for him, as he could no longer leave the bunker for fear of almost instant radiation death. He uses the Securitrons to venture outside and collect resources that he needs such as water to purify and scrap to fix the robots. He thanks his lucky stars every day that he was so much of a peace loving person that he made a bunker underground for quiet.Now, Polani sits in his bunker, surviving the Detroit wasteland in relative luxury compared to those outside.
