History: California had been at the heart of change in America - back when the nation was still unified into a singular United States although year by year, things were going badly for the middle and lower class of America. Cost of living was growing higher, as was debt for the public and private sectors. Money was more and more flowing upwards while those below were barely scraping by. Increasing wage gaps, job loss due to automation and off-sourcing, rising medical and student debts and a general-lack of understanding from both political parties slowly started to alienate people on both spectrum.

While the initial years saw the rise of both Far-Left and Far-Right - in California, this mostly concentrated into organizations like BLM, Third-Wave Feminism, Antifa and so on. Although, as the years went by - even these organization slowly decayed away due to their splintered nature and lack of control. What was more evident, was that many Millenials and also young Gen Z - were becoming more disgusted with the practices of both the Democrats and the Republicans. Seeing both as the same coin - corruption, greed and lack of representation.

This helped to rise the return of more Socialist ideals - that sought to replace the Capitalist System all-together with a more Communist idea. Although, these ideas eventually started to wither away like the others. Although one line of thinking did survive - namely an ideology known as New Syndicalism - that advocated for a more controlled-capitalist state, similar to those in Sweden or Germany. Compared to the other ideas - the New Syndicalist Movement had a stronger core and leadership in position - they were among the first also to condemn both the US and EU involvement in Europe. Calling one out for war-profiteering and the other of importing 'fascist-liberalism'. Alongside more socialist ideals - there were other radical ideals, namely the revival of the Technocracy Movement in Silicon Valley and also the formation of the National Unity Party, that advocated an America-First policy similar to the previous President Trump yet one that sought to include both arguments in the situation and put an end to American Imperialism and a returned focus to American citizens.

This divided nature, ensured that neither Republicans nor Democrats were able to achieve a majority in the west - helping to elect the first third-party candidate in years to the Presidency, Chris Shannon. Although following the blatant filibustering and open deviance from both major parties - this act set off demonstrations and resistance all across the Pacific. As more and more people became disillusioned with the American Political System itself - seeing it more and more a tool of big business and less for the people. Especially as the United States supplied more weapons and focused more attention on Europe and the various warzones across the world instead of it's own people.

In 2034 this would result in numerous protests and riots calling for the secession of California itself from the 'decaying remains of the Fat Cat Society'. In less than three years, the numerous activists managed to force through a plebiscite - California universally voted to leave the United States of America. While many feared crackdowns and had prepared for such an eventuality - the Federal Government being divided aided in California leaving the union. Following this, new elections were held - with the ruling Democrats being forced to accept the ideals of a proportional voting - as many had come to see the First-Pass-the-Post system as corrupt and divisive. Thus California held it's first elections under a proportional system - a situation that resulted in the New Syndicalist Party achieving victory yet not a majority. Followed by the Democratic Party, the Technocratic Party, the Republican Party and the National Unity Party.

The situation in California might have devolved into civil war, like in the rest of the United States - as the Democratic Party was eager to block and filibuster any ideas of the New Syndicalist Party to prevent it from turning California into a 'communist dictatorship'. Although the one to break the stalemate came from the Technocratic Party - whom behind the scenes managed to work out a deal between the New Syndicalist Party and the National Unity Party - the woman happened to be Jessica Fairbright.

The young Fairbright had been born at the inauguration of Donald Trump and over the years had grown up into an America that looked less and less as the promised 'American Dream' and more like the American Nightmare. Happening to be born to a White and Hispanic parents, studying in a community college more soaked in nationalist sentiment and also having grown up in a poor neighborhood. This resulted in Jessica Fairbright being the perfect woman to bridge the gap between the syndicalist, technocrats and nationalists. Setting up a political system completely different yet one that satisfied many - enacting an universal basic income and healthcare system, nationalizing many banks and natural resource deposits, breaking up several monopolies and promoting the inclusion of unions into many facets of life itself.

While this caused disturbance in many facets of society - they were easy to implement, as many people considered such reforms long overdue and in the wake of the collapse of the United States, a necessary step to creating a state for the people, by the people. California would later be joined by Washington and Oregon, alongside Nevada whom wished to avoid being consumed into the new Mormon state and also by Idaho who wanted to avoid conflicts with the Christian fundamentalists in Montana.

Thus the Pacific States of America was created - after four years of negotiations and having the democratic system replaced by the more multilist system instead. Hawaii would be accepted as a protectorate and later accepted part of the PSA - after which the Pacfic States would spend fourteen years restoring infrastructure and commerce. The Russian Empire was officially formed as a result on February 5th, 2044 in Saint Petersburg (until the capital was moved to Moscow in 2051) with the election of Mikhail Vladimirovich Romanov, a Russian State politician and son of Grand Prince Mikhail Vladimirovich Romanov (a grand-nephew of Tsar Nicholas II) as the head of the Russian Empire followed the absorbing of the Muscovy Republic which was was brief successor state to the disintegrating Russian Federation. Mikhail had been a popular politician of the people and his newly founded All Russia's party swiftly took the majority of seats in the first Imperial Duma elections of the same year.

The infantile Russian Empire was immediately beset by problems that Mikhail struggled to get around. While Russia had been relatively fine economically till the early 2040s when political and economic stagnation firmly took hold under the increasingly totalitarian Federation government. But two brief respites could be said to have saved the fledgling empire. Belarus by referendum voluntarily joined with the Empire after years of peaceful occupation by the Federation forces present. The same occurred in Eastern Ukraine by the People's Republics of Luganks and Donetsk. Allowing Mikhail to focus on his Southern and Eastern Fronts. The Federation military had fragmented by did not totally disintegrate. In 2045 much of the former Federation military was in European Russia and remained loyal to the Imperial cause. With popular Imperial movements spreading throughout the ethnically Russian dominant territories in Asia. Yet, the Empire never conducted a bloody war of immediate reconquest like foreign observers would have thought. No, instead Mikhail worked in preserving as much as the Russian economy as he could.
