The Guyanese's own Black Revolutionary Brotherhood Phalanx of the Heavenly Crusade, known as simply the Black Phalanx by most, call their regimental/brigade equivalents Legions in reference to Solomon's own Black Legion which is the force that he led in the war for Independence. Minus their personnel numbers, with each unit numbering a little over 5000 men, there isn't much else similar between them and the Roman's equivalent. I just don't want you to be too concerned by that.

Since some parts of Brazil are free after the Nations App Reservation expired, would it be okay if the Portuguese Empire had what is left of Brazil?
Of course, I would need to edit my app but it would be good to see if my App's history is okay before I make edits to the territories and population

Although the king has many powers (including being able to dismiss judges, ministers, and other government appointees without the consent of the Sejm or his Chancellor) the Sejm holds most of the power in government.

The Sejm is responsible for passing national statues and laws, appropriating national funds, and approving/vetting the governments initiatives and ministers. As a bicameral body, it is divided into the upper and lower bodies. The upper body is primarily responsible for representing the aristocracy, however its power has largely diminished over time. Most of the legislative action comes from the lower body which is elected by the general population. The government abides strictly by the roles and regulations set out by the nations written constitution. It can be changed via a national referendum or a 2/3rds majority vote in both the upper and lower bodies of the Sejm.

History :

Formation of the Commonwealth and early years

Poland-Lithuania was formed by the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in 1569 by the treaty of Lublin, then known as the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Under the leadership of Sigismund II, Poland and Lithuania were unified into a single state, securing both realms under the Jagiellonian dynasty. This treaty, however, came at the expense of the monarch’s power- as a concession to the Polish nobility, the Sejm was made to represent the noble estate, and established strict checks on the monarch’s power. Sigismund II Augustus left an heir- Alexander II who continued the Jagiellonian dynasty in 1572. Alexander II like his father, came into conflict with the noble estate in the form of the Sejm, and early on had to adapt to the unusual political system that had been created a decade earlier. This conflict also compounded the threat of the protestant reformation- which at this time was in full swing. Additionally, even though the eastern church was in full communion with Rome- conflict between the eastern orthodox populations of Lithuania and the Catholic populations of the west created some unrest.

Alexander II attempted to alleviate the religious conflict- first and foremost by establishing the Compact of Podlesia which secured religious freedom for all religions within his domain. This measure, however, was somewhat weakened by provision X, a polemic addition to the text of the compact which secured Roman Catholicism as “Primus inter pares” or the “first among equals”. While this placated the Catholic dominated Sejm, it created outrage in the east. Of importance, the Cossack settlers of the east were particularly unhappy. Alexander II along with the members of the Chalcedonian church were, however, united in their opposition against Protestantism, which never managed to secure a significant foothold in either realm.

Alexander III and the Great Eastern War

Alexander II died on May 3rd, 1596 at the age of 55. He was succeeded by his son Alexander III Jagiellon who was 25 years old at the time. Alexander III unlike his father, had sway with the nobility. He managed to secure several victories over the Sejm, first and foremost including the dissolution of the rigid legal system which had attempted to stop the ability of outsiders to join the nobility. Indeed, it was not uncommon for freemen of low status and middle-class merchants to become members of the nobility. By reducing the nobility’s exclusivity, it helped to reduce the landed classes entrenched status. Additionally, the conversion of many nobles to Catholicism made it easier for the eastern nobility to become accepted in the Sejm, and in particular- the Ruthenian and Baltic populations began to endure a process of Polonization. Alexander III was a patron of the renaissance, much to the dismay of some of the more conservative elements of society.

Alexander III is mostly remembered as a great military king, earning him the moniker “Alexander the Rus-Slayer”. Unrest in the east created an opening for Poland, and he launched an invasion of Russia in 1605 (known as the Great Eastern War in Poland-Lithuania). Initially aiming for a personal union with Russia- he managed to secure several devastating defeats over the Russians and captured Moscow for three years, only to be driven out by a siege. Despite his failure to subdue Russia, he managed to secure some territorial concessions-expanding his domain all the way to Smolensk. By 1620, Poland-Lithuania entered a period of growth and prosperity, and the losses incurred by the war the union were quickly recovered by Russian concessions. Nonetheless Alexander III would die in 1621 of smallpox while triumphantly returning home through Minsk. Alexander III Jagiellon was succeeded by his firstborn son Wladyslaw IV. Wladyslaw IV Jagiellon died of smallpox as well and ruled for only one week until he died of the same illness. He was 26 years old.

Alexander III’s second son and brother of Wladyslaw IV became king at the tender age of just 16. Nicknamed the boy king, Casimir V was said to be kind but unfortunately naïve. The successes of his predecessors were reversed when the Sejm banned non-Catholic nobility from the Sejm and reasserted its old privileges in 1635. These two things would prove to become a disaster in the future. Nonetheless the realms of the commonwealth continued to prosper for the time being. Casimir V proved to be indecisive and incompetent at international affairs, allowing Russia’s time of troubles to end, and remaining passive as the Commonwealths enemies reneged on past agreements. Casimir V’s biggest failure, however, was his indecisiveness during the Cossack Rebellion of 1654. The Cossacks would come to ask for the aid of the Rus Commonwealth, beginning the first great northern war.

The First and Second Great Northern Wars

Casimir V, perhaps feeling that he could gain prestige by leading armies as his father and brother did- led his army to disastrous defeat at the battle of Smolensk in 1654. Casimir V, to his credit is said to have died valiantly in battle. This was of little comfort however, as Poland was left leaderless – with Casimir V’s son Wladyslaw V Jagiellon being left an orphan at the age of 10. The regency proved helpless, however it found salvation with the leadership of Stanislaus Piluski, who led a brilliant military campaign against the Russians in the east, checking Russia’s armies and recapturing Smolensk in March 1655. Despite this, Scandinavians joined the war and opened a new threat in the north-west. The northern invaders were left unchecked until they reached the gates of Vilnius, the capital of the Duchy of Lithuania. Piluski deatched a 20,000 strong force to lift the siege of Vilnius, under the command of “Deputy General” Arkady Bartosz. Bartosz proved competent, and the Scandinavian army was routed and eventually captured in Riga on May 7, 1656. The treaty of Riga formalized the peace between the two nations and the Swedish Baltic holdings were ceded to the Commonwealth. With Sweden knocked out, all polish forces concentrated east against Russia. Through the end of 1656, Piluski spent time in Ukraine fighting a brutal war against the Cossack rebels, managing to quell them only after a protracted six-month campaign in The Ukraine. The Campaign in the east resumed in April 1657 with a renewed offensive towards Smolensk by the Russians. This time however Piluski failed to relieve Smolensk and was checked once again at the First Battle of Mahilo, retreating west to Minsk. Finally, after a protracted 3-month cat and mouse campaign, the remnants of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth Army met for decisive battle against the Russian Army at Minsk in August 1657. Piluski, solidifying a legendary status- crafted a decisive defeat of the Russian army- defeating the Russian forces in detail there and at The Second Battle of Mahilo. Exhausted by the fighting, the Sejm ordered a truce, and after some negotiations- the Treaty of Minsk was signed, conceding territory in the Ukraine and Belorussia to Russia in exchange for a 25-year non-aggression pact. The treaty was ratified formally by the Sejm on March 10th, 1658 formally ending the First Northern War.

This war highlighted the resilience of the Commonwealth (and Stanislaus Piluskis genius) but also the problems plaguing the commonwealth. The noble estates overbearing influence, the Sejms poor leadership, and the inherent problems in managing two kingdoms under one government all came to light, and Wladyslaw V, upon ascending to the throne of the two kingdoms, immediately imitated a series of reforms intended to standardize the two kingdoms. The intensity of Polonization programs increased, outlawing the Baltic and Ruthenian (except Lithuanian) languages as well as ending the special privileges of the Ruthenian nobles in the east. This sparked outrage, and the Cossacks along with a sizable portion of the Lithuanian nobles rejected Wladyslaw V. This began the Great Eastern Rebellion of 1661 and precipitated the following Second Northern War in 1662.

Wladyslaw V, under the mentorship of Stanislaus Piluski led his newly recovered armies against the disloyal rebels in Belarus in July 1661. In the battle of Polock, the hasty rebel army was crushed, and the rebellion there soon ceased after the execution of much of the nobility there. However, upon turning the army south- the Cossack rebellion joined forces with the reinvigorated Russian army, which joined the war in favor of the rebellion in January 1662. This new Russian offensive led three separate armies to invade the Baltics, Central Belorussia, and Western Ukraine. Outraged, the Polish-Lithuanian army reached Ukraine and suppressed the Cossacks with an unusually malicious fervor. The Cossack Slaughter there proved to be enough to silence the rebellion, however the region was left depopulated and many Cossacks permanently pledged their allegiance to Russia after thereafter migrating east.

Wladyslaw V returned in order to address the Sejm in May 1662, leaving the armies of the Commonwealth to Stanislaus Piluski. Piluski headed north and met the southern force of the Russian army at Kiev. There Piluski annihilated the Russian army and proceeded to head north and link up with the Polish-Lithuanian armies in Belorussia. Piluski led the forces to victory at the battle of Borizov and captured the Russian army at the Third Battle of Mahilo in August 1662. In the north, the armies were recalled defending Russia, abandoning all the gains made there. Piluski pressed towards Smolensk and the remnants of Russia’s armies regained some strength in Smolensk. The decision of the army leadership to stay in Smolensk proved fateful- as the ensuing 6 month siege of Smolensk led to the complete surrender of the Russian army on March 15th, 1663. Key leaders managed to escape however, and resistance continued. Nonetheless, the road to Moscow lay open.

In the West, Wladyslaw V addressed the Sejm in August. News of the impressive victories in the east bolstered the young king’s legitimacy, and despite the odds much of the war had not reached the heart of Poland. This in the eyes of much of the population had left a strong impression of their king, and with this influence the King established a lower body of the Sejm- to represent the middle classes. While this is often viewed in retrospect as benevolence, in truth it weakened the Sejm, as the nobles influence there was diluted by the formal introduction of the non-aristocratic classes of society into the Sejm. Wladyslaw V returned east to tend to the war, and new elections began in his absence.

The Capture of Moscow and the formation of the Polish Lithuanian Kingdom

Piluski headed west and was finally met by the Russian Northern Army at Biala. Piluski met his match there and was checked and forced back west but managed to inflict heavy casualties on the Russians. Realizing that the window of opportunity for Moscow was closing, made a hasty turnaround to cripple the Russian Army. At the Battle of Drohobuz in April 1663, Piluski turned the tables on the Russians and once again headed east, hot on the heels of the Northern Russian Army. The Russians however, where very keen to stall the Commonwealth Forces when they could. By late April, Polish-Lithuanian forces reached the gates of Moscow. Despite his impressive victories, they had come at a cost. Many men and equipment had been lost on the way to Moscow. Knowing this, the Russian Northern Army attempted a trap. They abandoned Moscow and plundered the city for anything that could be of use to the Commonwealth forces. They then left the city, waiting to encircle and trap Poles. However, Piluski anticipated this trap and knew of reinforcements headed towards Moscow led by Wladyslaw V- and split his army in half. He also detached his legendary winged hussars, ready to spring his own counter trap. One half of his 30,000 strong army headed into the trap, while the rest of the army headed for a feint retreat west, to link up with Wladyslaws Army.

The Russians, as expected, trapped half of Piluskis army, and sent a small contingent of men west to chase the other half of the army which had detached from the main army in Moscow. Agents of the other half of the army, led by the loyal “Deputy-General” Arkady Bartosz met with Wladyslaws new reinforcements and he informed Wladyslaw of the plan. With this plan in motion, Bartosz’s army of 15,000 would meet with the 20,000 strong force of The Russians, while Wladslays reinforcement army of 20,000 men would maneuver behind the Russian army to encircle them. This plan worked well, and the Russian Army was slaughtered at the battle of Mozhaysk in May 1663. Wladyslaw and Bartosz’s armies then reached Moscow, and surprised the Russians who were sieging Piluskis army within Moscow. Surprised and threatened by reinforcements from the west, the Russian forces attempted retreat but were stalled by Piluskis attempt to break Russian siege forces in the east. As the Russian flanks folded, Piluski broke out and intercepted the hastily retreating Russian army. Here, most of the remaining Russian Army disintegrated or was captured. Although the government managed escape, the war was effectively over.

The Russians sued for peace in June, while Commonwealth occupied Moscow for the second time in its history. This time however, Wladyslaw V called for an emergency session of the Sejm. While the Sejm would convene in October in Moscow, Russian-Commonwealth negotiations followed. Russia would return the territories ceded in the first war- while paying tribute to the Commonwealth . On October 1, 1663 Russia and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth signed the Treaty of Moscow. On October 6th, the Sejm ratified the treaty and declared Wladyslaw V the title of “Augustus” – a title reminiscent of Sigismund II Augustus. Most importantly, that same day, the Sejm voted unanimously to vote for the unification of Poland and Lithuania into a single Kingdom- the Kingdom of Poland-Lithuania, thus uniting both realms into one single political entity. The next day, Wladyslaw V was crowned King Wladyslaw V Augustus on the altar of Saint Basils Cathedral in Moscow. Thus, the Commonwealth ended, and the Kingdom began.

The Kingdom of Poland-Lithuania instantly set itself as a powerful entity in the heart of Eastern Europe. Much of the war had affected only the fringes of the Kingdom- so much of the Kingdom remained intact. Bolstered by tributes from the east, the Kingdoms economy boomed, and the capital Warsaw was renovated to reflect the Kingdoms power and wealth. The golden age had begun, and much of the Kingdom prospered for the next 100 years. During this time- Poland Lithuania entrenched itself in the Baltics and the Ukraine and was involved in some minor conflicts on the edges of its realm. While its relevance in trade decreased with increasing European attention outside of Europe- Poland-Lithuania remained a powerful trading power in the Baltics and in Eastern Europe as a whole. Within the Kingdom, the citizenry became very conscious of their position as the crossroads of Eastern and Western Europe. The populace also grew plentiful, as the stability became a hallmark of Jagiellonian rule. In 1725, Russia refused tribute. This nearly caused war, however at the time, threats in the west were more pressing, and so instead the treaty of Riga (1726) was signed, releasing Russia formally from her obligation to pay tribute in exchange for a promise of non-aggression and a formalization borders in the east.

By the end of the 1750s, this increased wealth and prosperity of the middle classes led to a growth of Enlightenment thought- and Polish Physiocrats were instrumental in the drafting of a national written constitution. By this time, Wladyslaw XIII, descendant of Wladyslaw V Augustus, accepted the demands of the new liberal constitution. On May 21st, 1760, a Polish-Lithuanian national constitution was adopted turning Poland-Lithuania into a Constitutional Monarchy. The celebration would be brief however, as a series of disasters would plague the Kingdom by the end of the XVIII century.

Polish-Lithuanian Civil War and The Second Great Eastern War

Upon Wladyslaw VIII Jagiellon’s death, a dynastic succession dispute began. Wladyslaw IX had converted to Lutheranism, which presented a problem for the now mostly Chalcedonian Poland-Lithuania. Although there was no rule against this formally- it had always been the case since the formation of the Commonwealth that Monarchs could not be of non-chalcedonian faith. In response to this, Wladyslaw VIIIs younger son Michael I claimed the throne- arguing that Wladyslaw IX’s heresy precluded him from the throne. Michael I gained the favor of the lower body of the Sejm and the wealthy merchant classes. However, Michael was a liberal and a patron of Smithian thought. This gained him disfavor from a significant majority of the landed classes- and perhaps the most aggravating position of Prince Michael was his advocacy for the abolition of serfdom. The two groups quickly divided, with Wladyslaw’s supporters becoming known as the Legitimists and Michaels supporters becoming known as the Optimates. Realizing the threat to their power, the nobility gave a futile ultimatum known as the 43 demands on June 7th, 1772 to the lower Sejm, fully representing the interests of the Legitimists. The demands included Wladyslaw IX’s recognition of his right to become king and the constitutional protection of serfdom. The demands were unanimously rejected and on June 8th, 137 of the 150 seats in the upper body of the Sejm and 47 of the nearly 300 seats of the lower body were vacated. The next day Wladyslaw IX left towards Minsk, now the capital of the Legitimist faction.

In Warsaw Michael I was crowned king and fully recognized by the now mostly Optimate faction of the Sejm on June 15th, 1772. This triggered the Polish-Lithuanian civil war on June 17th, 1772 as the Legitimist faction began the siege of Riga. Most of Belorussia, eastern Ukraine. The vile Russians saw an opening for attack and on August 3rd, the Russian Empire declared its support for the Legitimists and mobilized its armies against Poland-Lithuania. To compound the threat, the heretical Bohemians declared war and marshalled its armies. Polish-Lithuanian armies mobilized and were split once again in four ways. Michael I personally led the battle against the Russians in Belorussia, General Matuesz Nowak led the battle against the Bohemians in Western Poland, Tomasz Lewandowski led the Baltic Armies to relieve Riga, and Aleksy Wiśniewski led an army against Polands foes in the Ukraine.

The initial summer campaign of 1772 proved to be a mixed bag for Poland. In the west, Bohemia was defeated handily at the battle of Krakow in August 1772. This defeat left much of the Bohemian army shattered and a retreat to Silesia was ordered. In the east, the battle of Western Steppes in August of the same year was a stalemate. In the Baltics, combined Russian and Rebel forces checked assaulting polish forces and the Winter of 1772-1773 proved to be a harsh one. In Smolensk, Russian armies proved elusive as much of the warfare devolved into a sitting game. Despite the less than optimal results, the spring of 1773 would prove to be even more difficult. In 1773, the Emperor of Mittleuropa intervened to stop Polish incursion into Bohemia. The Bohemians left with a white peace. In the east, Poland-Lithuania was defeated at the battle of Riga in April 1773, and in the south at the battle of Tokovela the same month. Faced with the possibility of being trapped, King Michael II retreated west and abandoned Smolensk. A Rus army attempted to engage Michael at the battle of Mohlyowska in June however Michael and his army managed to escape. In August 1774, General Nowak arrived in Ukraine to aid in the defense of Ukraine. However, By this time, Polish forces were forced across the Dnepr river. Despite this, the poles managed to stop the Rus at the battle of Kherson in the same month.

Two very important events would follow in the summer of 1774. In the Baltics, Lewandowski would win a stunning battle against the Russians and Legitimists at Riga, routing them east, and in Belorussia, Michael I would manage to capture several important members of the legitimist faction. With the new intelligence gathered from these prisoners of war, Michael created a trap at the battle of Neman substantially crippling an advancing Rus army. Michael I would fall gravely ill, however- nearly losing his life that winter. The war did not move very much, until the spring of 1775- when the Rus army regrouped and pushed once again on the Dnepr river. The Rus army tried to cross but were stopped every time. Michael I would somewhat recover from his illness the next summer, however its widely though that it crippled him. Whatever the case, Michael I would only lead the army nominally- being de-facto replaced by a man named Marcus Carcolla. Very little is known about Carcolla, but he managed to hold the Rus forces several times at Pripyat, Neman, and at Minsk throughout 1775.

The last significant battle of note took place in March 1776. An advancing Rus army this time was routed at the battle of Riga, prompting a ceasefire, which would last for 7 years. While hostilities were halted temporarily, much of the Kingdom was under the control of the Legitimists, who by this time had become puppets of the Rus. Tensions would re-ignite in 1783, when sensing weakness- Sweden declared war on the Kingdom of Poland-Lithuania. A Swedish army managed to take Gotland, defeating the Polish-Lithuanian garrison. They then launched a failed invasion of Estonia, and a protracted naval war commenced.

Russia broke the ceasefire, moving against Poland-Lithuania in 1784. Once again, the Rus and Polish-Lithuanian armies met several times in Belorussia, the Baltics, and in the Ukraine. In 1787, The Polish-Lithuanian army met with the Rus army at Minsk, destroying the legitimist army. There, Wladyslaw IX was killed by a knee injury which turned gangrenous and died on July 30th, 1787. Dying with no heirs- the legitimist faction collapsed with no one to rally around. However, the Rus would try two more years to continue the war. However, the Rus was militarily unsuccessful at the battlefield. Despite successes, Poland-Lithuania was in serious trouble. The blockade of the Baltics seriously disrupted the Polish-Lithuanian economy, causing economic troubles throughout the kingdom. Additionally, the war had devastated the easternmost provinces. By this time, the leading government in May 1789 resigned and Michael I was forced to ask for peace. The Rus and Sweden agreed, and that June delegates from the three nations met for peace talks. This would result in the treaty of Minsk, which ended the war officially. Poland-Lithuania would cede Eastern Ukraine, most of Belarus, and Gotland, as well as pay significant sums in “reparations”.

The Post-War and beyond

The end of the war saw Michael I as the only legitimate heir to the throne, and although the war was lost, he had a lot of popularity and was seen as a hero. Michael had newfound political capital, and he abolished serfdom on May 2, 1791. Michael I would not live for much longer, as he would die of pneumonia the next spring.

Throughout the end of the 18th and through the middle of the 19th century, Poland-Lithuania recovered, and its economy boomed. Starting in the 1820s, the process of industrialization started, and by the end of the 1870s a large burgeoning railway system was in place. Literacy and living standards improved, and for the first-time peasants began moving towards the cities in very large numbers. The army made several reforms, enforcing mandatory military service and enforcing higher standards for the officer corps. Entering the 20th century, Poland-Lithuania has a reputation as a powerful, modern country.

Of course, I would need to edit my app but it would be good to see if my App's history is okay before I make edits to the territories and population

Hmm, no, I doubt it. You already have colonial territories in Africa and taking up the entirety of Brazil would be a bit too much in my opinion, especially since we might still get a player there eventually. Let's wait a little and see what happens.

Not a very comprehensive review, more like just a few thoughts:
  • The population. In the OTL, I believe that your population would have been at around 58 million. An increase is acceptable due to the different circumstances, but I'd like you to at least vaguely mention it, a sentence or two describing why the population is as large as it is.
  • The military section. As an industrialized region, a regional power that is larger than the nearby Zentraleuropa and far more centralized and advanced than the Rus Commonwealth, you should try to describe your military much better than that. I don't expect people to write paragraphs as some players have, but you should write at least a few sentences for each field there.
  • The history is alright, but I wanted to check if you have discussed it with the Rus player. You are indeed mentioning the Rus several times in it, but the mentions of Russia and the Russian Empire (that you probably just didn't change), make me have to ask that, since a confederation of Rus principalities and the Golden Horde is clearly going to be different than the Russia of OTL. You occupying Moscow as an example probably won't have quite the same effect you seem to be going for, especially by having one of your monarchs crowned there, if it's just the capital of a small principality inside the Golden Commonwealth, especially since the last mention of the city in the Rus app that I remember is it being ravaged by the Mongolians for resisting. I'm also not sure how much of a unified response the Golden Commonwealth would have been able to offer in the wars against you, and I don't remember any mentions of the PLC in the Rus app.
If you've discussed it with the Rus player then it's certainly alright, but I have to check.

And I posted!

Small disclaimer though, my knowledge of Byzantine fashion is limited to a few minutes spent on Wikipedia and what I could remember from history books so what I described there might make no sense, oh well.

I mean this is the 20th century, no reason why medieval fashion would continue being trendy in Byzantium at this point.

Reminds me to make a post, eventually. I don't really have much to do though. Is anyone up for doing something with best girl Spain?

Oh yes, I can give you a very good reason - tradition.= Normal fashion would have certainly evolved, but when we speak of the imperial court and its strict rules and beliefs, I can guarantee that medieval fashion would continue to thrive there.

As for that, well, I still have characters that I can send abroad but I'll have to see how I can deal with my current interactions first.

Sounds good. I like the idea of Addis turning into the cloak-and-dagger frontline of our little Cold War, so feel free to have your reformers reach out to French agents as well.
For really, I think that the poorest he that is in England hath a life to live as the greatest he. And therefore truly, Sir, I think it's clear that every man that is to live under a Government ought first by his own consent to put himself under that Government. And I do think that the poorest man in England is not at all bound in a strict sense to that Government that he hath not had a voice to put himself under.

Full Nation Name: The Portuguese Empire
Majority/Official Culture: Portuguese (85.6%) is the official culture although many other tribes reside within the African Colonies such as the Ovimbundu, Mbundu and Bakongo in Angola. Some were recognised for their outstanding bravery in fighting and resisting Portuguese occupation and have military units of their own. While the cultures of the natives are slowly assimilated into the larger Portuguese family as they retain their ability to practice local customs and enjoy their local cuisine, they have to abide the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.
Official Languages: Portuguese (96.7%) and Latin
Territorial Core: Portugal and Azore Islands
Territorial Claim: Galicia (Spain) has been eyed by Portuguese Nationalist since time and memorial. Especially now with the revolutionary spirit burning among many Portuguese, some fear or wonder whether the dream of a Greater Portugal will ever be realised.
Capital City: Lisboa (658,930)
Population: 7.26 Million (Core) 2.1 Million (Colonies) 9.36 Million (Total)

Lisboa (658,930)
Porto (411,214)

Mozambique: 846,320
Angola: 758,291
South Tanzania: 321,872
Zambia and Zimbabwe: 299,310

Government Type: Absolute Hereditary Monarchy
Government Ideology/Policies: Imperialist, Conservative

Government Focus: King Dom Carlos I, Monarch of Portugal is focused and consolidating his power on the mainland. With the populace getting agitated and rowdier as the demand a Republic, Carlos I finds himself having no choice to slowly reform the system and grant more powers to the people which angers the people who support the Monarchy who mostly consist of the rich merchants. His advisors and ministers are fractured on whether they should remain loyal to the King or grab power for themselves by flowing along with the tides of revolutionary change. Only time will tell if a revolution can be averted. Economically, Portugal is also not as strong as it used to which is fueling even more anger among Portuguese Nationalist.

Head of State: King Dom Carlos I
Head of Government: Council of Advisors (Conselho de Assessores) - Teófilo Braga - Minister of Trade and Commerce, Alfonso Claudio - Defence, Miguel Brasil - Foreign Affairs. They assist and advise the King regarding decisions and affairs.
Government Description: Since time and memorial, Portugal has been ruled through a succession of Kings and their heirs. Carlos I's heir is Dom Manuel II. The Council of Advisors/Ministers is in charge of helping the King make decisions while the majority of the populace is given little say in the external and internal dealings of the Empire. The Church also plays a major role as they have the power of anointing and the coronation the new King. Should the disapprove, the Church has levied and in the past fought wars against Portugal itself. That is why the lineage of Carlos I was not always the royal family of Portugal. This court culture results in frequent corruptions, especially with the materialistic and mercantilist thinking of the people in power. The Conselho de Assessores consists of 12 advisors to the King and are experts in their own fields pertaining to different matters.

Majority/State Religion: Roman Catholicism (91.8%) [Under the Greater Chalcedonian Church]
Religious Description: The Church of Portugal is a powerful institution. The 3 provinces of Portugal are the Ecclesiastical Province of Lisboa, Braga and Evora. The highest of these is the Cardinal of the Latin Patriarchate of Lisboa, led by Cardinal José (III) Sebastião de Almeida Neto. Under him are the many individual Archdiocese and Archbishops of the many small churches in the 3 main Ecclesiastical Provinces. Education is also influenced by the church with there being more than 560 religious schools in Portugal and 20 abroad in the colonies. the Mission Church of Angola and Mozambique are led by the Jesuit Religious Order while the Redemptorist lead the Mission Church of Zimbabwe. Military religious orders such as the Knights of St John's also reside in Lisboa.

Economic Ideologies: Mercantilism, Protectionism of Trade (Gold Standard) and Capitalism
Major Production: Portugal (Core) - Textiles, Machine-Parts, Steel, Tungsten, Clothes, Footwear, Tomatoes, Pears, Oranges, Fish, Wine, Rum, Wine Corks, Cheese, Ships (Military and Commercial), Early Cars, Petroleum, Bolt-Action Rifles and Artillery (For Local Armed Forces)
Cotton, Sugar, Fish, Citrus, Timber, Coffee, Diamonds, Gold, Silver, Coal, Iron, Oil
Economic Description: Due to being a Mercantilist nation with our Portuguese Escudo (Currency) tied to the Gold Standard, Portugal continues to maintain protectionist policies to ensure wealth stays within the borders of the realm. Many raw and precious goods come from the colonies while Portugal has slowly been shifting to work in the factories and industrialising. In the colonies, slightly below half are farmers while the other half work in mines or excavation related jobs. In Portugal, 35% Work on agriculture while 10% are employed in crafts such as fine wines, cheese and corks. Shipbuilding is the mainstay of Portugal's industrialisation with the shipyards of Lisboa and Porto upgraded in 1871 to house and build Ironclads. Much of the industry being developed is in Ironworks and metallurgy. Machine Part factories in Lisboa churn out the products at rates faster than ever seen since the factories first opened in 1892. Steelworks are beginning to take off especially in Braga Province. Much of it (66%) of it is government owned by the Monarchy while the remaining is private but driven by 1% of the richest in Portugal.

Development: Modern (Mainland Portugal) Semi-Industrialised (Empire)
Development Description: Portugal had begun industrialisation in the 1880s when the railway was becoming popular. Furthermore, the Naval tradition of Portugal spurred further development due to many of the shipbuilding industries pertaining to industrial activity. Hence, while the literacy rates in Portugal were at 12% in 1830, by the 1870s, they had reached 42% and in 1906 today a stunning 85% (Which is partially why revolutionary sentiment of spreading). Large clothes and textile factories were present as early as 1890 and in the 1890s, Portugal began to make Machine Parts and Ships of tonnage excess of 14,000 tons. Railway in Portugal is dominated by a Private Company (Partially Govt. owned) called Caminhos de Ferro Portugueses - Portuguese Railways finished the constructing a Lisboa to Porto railway in 1883 allowing for goods to be shipped quickly between the 2 major cities. The mainland is extremely dense in railway infrastructure and telegraph lines crisscross the entirety of Mainland Portugal allowing for quick communication between major Portuguese cities by 1904. This quick development of the mainland was needed due to the massive population of our European Competitors like Spain and France. Therefore, many of the farms use early tractors which improved the efficiency of ploughing the land and reducing the workers needed giving the unemployment needed to open factories. The colonies have extensive railways to send resources towards ports like Luanda for shipment. However, mainly focused on the extraction of resources, few factories have been built in the colonies with the exception of certain private ventures. Iron from Angola keeps the Machine Parts and steelworks in Portugal running while gold, silver and diamond from Zimbabwe and Zambia allow for a constant flow of revenue to Portugal. Oil from Angola is also starting to fuel the refineries in Portugal for the cars it is beginning to produce at a slow pace.

Portuguese Army Flag

Army Description: Exército Português (The Portuguese Army) is responsible for the defence of mainland Portugal and her colonies. Comprising of 72,200 regular soldiers, the Portuguese Army is small in comparison to its European counterparts. The regular army is divided into 3 Corps (I, II, III) which consist of 6 Infantry Divisions, each consisting of 12,000 soldiers which are further split into 3 Brigades. These divisions are trained regularly and are based in the Brigade level at different locations in Portugal. At any time, these are the 4 divisions that will respond to an invasion. These 6 regular divisions are some of the best in Europe as the need to favour quality over quantity was amplified due to the small population of the Empire. Following France, Portugal went through massive Military reforms in the 1890s with the introduction of early machineguns. Portugal was eager to test these new weapons and develop strategies for their implementation of the battlefield. At a Platoon level, a few units were equipped with the machineguns and within a Company, there can be as many as 4. To maximise individual firepower, the bolt-action rifles of the Portuguese army is the Mauser–Vergueiro which with single shots can hit a target at great distances.

Furthermore, there is a Royal Guard of the Archers (Guarda Real dos Archeiros) Brigade of 3,000 soldiers who are rigorously vetted for their proficiency and skill before being admitted into the elite unit that is based in Lisboa Barracks, outside the King's residence. In essence, the Royal Guard of the Archers has been around since 1572 under King John II of Portugal and are known for their organisation and skill at fighting having fought in times where Portugal was threatened such as when Spain seized Lisboa in 1588.

Moreover, Portugal has a conscription system requiring men aged 18 to serve 3 years in the Armed Forces, this brings the number of conscripted men to 168,600 soldiers serving in 6 Corps (IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX) and into a further 12 Divisions. They are equipped with similar equipment to the regular divisions and are led by Regular Army Officers at the top and NCOs down to the Brigade level. An enlisted soldier who displays himself to command admirably is able to serve as an NCO at a Brigade level and must join the regular armed forces to go further. They are less well-trained and some critics will even state they are ineffective at combat and conscription should be banned in favour of their manpower for another usage.

Military tradition is deeply entrenched with the religious history of the nations and there are several religious orders that run their own military units. One such unit is the Most Reveranable Knights of the Order of St John's. Their Brigade of 4,000 men is run on their own funding and equipped with various different types of rifles and machineguns. They are decentralised from the main force but have proven effective when coordinating with Portuguese forces in previous conflicts such as the Animist Zealot Rebellion in Zimbabwe in 1866. Their unit dates back to the times of the early middle ages in 958 BC.

Meanwhile, there are 58,000 soldiers from the conscription in the colonies that form 3 Corps. The Moçambique Colonial Corp (1864), Companhia Colonial de Angola (1870) and the Sociedade colonial de Zâmbia (1874). These Corps consist of conscripts and regular soldiers. Furthermore, there are 2 Brigades of Native soldiers. The Brigada Mbundu of 5,000 elite natives and Brigada Bakongo of 6,000.

This brings the total size of the armed forces to 316,600 soldiers (Regular and Conscripted/ 3.5% of the population)
While this may seem high, it includes the private military orders and the conscripted men of all who reach the age of 18.

Army Weakness : One of the main weaknesses of the Exército Português (The Portuguese Army) is the Officer Corp. While there were periods of reforms in implementing the machinegun and reforming the doctrine of the Portuguese Army, it was met with fierce resistance from the Old Guard that supported the King. With some of the Old Guard still residing in their positions as generals and in the command staff, their doctrines may be severely outdated in this new kind of warfare. New, fresh minds are needed within the High Command but the new Staff Officers from Military schools in Lisboa are frequently ignored and their promotions stopped for the Old Guard to keep their own positions and precious titles creating an environment hostile to new ideas.

Portuguese Naval Ensign

Naval Description : The Marinha Portuguesa, also known as Marinha de Guerra Portuguesa or as Armada Portuguesa (Portuguese Navy) is the pride of Portugal. The Army was always something that was born out of necessity being on Mainland Europe but the joining Navy was the dream of every Portuguese. The Armada Portuguesa has had a long history and maritime tradition dating back to 1317 when it was founded by King Denis I Of Portugal. Winning in battles such as the Battle of Lisboa Coast in which the Navy fended up the Naval Blockade by Spain and it was said body after body of Spanish Sailors had washed ashore after the battle. It was also responsible for discovering trade routes to India in 1498 by Vasco Da Gama.

The Portuguese Navy comprises of 2 Fleets, the Armada de Casa (Homefleet) and Armada das Colônias (Colonial Fleet) and in total 76,250 professional sailors with 46,340 in reserve. The Homefleet is the pride of Portugal and the total fleet has 62 ships. Apart from these 2 fleets, the Portuguese Coast Guard (Guarda Portuguesa Costeira Real) is responsible for the coastal defence of the realm. The Portuguese Coast Guard has 23,300 active duty members and another 15,700 on reserve and has 38 ships, most of which are small Torpedo Boats that base of in major harbours such as Luanda, Lisboa and Porto.
Armada de Casa
- 4 Principe Class Battleships - (Rainha de Portugal, Infante Dom Pedro, Príncipe Real, São Sebastião)
13,150 tons, 4 - 12-inch guns (2 twin turrets), 18 Knots
- 14 Armoured/Protected Cruisers
6 Gabriel Armoured Cruiser Class
9,800 tons, 12 6-inch guns (2 twin turrets, 8 single guns), 2 18-inch torpedo tubes, 23 knots, belt 2-6 inches, turrets 6.5 inches, conning tower 10 inches
8 Rafael Protected Cruiser Class
9,150 tons, 2 9-inch guns (2 single turrets), 10 6-inch guns (10 single guns), 4 14-inch torpedo tubes, 20 knots, belt 3 inches, turrets 5 inches, conning tower 7 inches
- 16 Bernardo Class Destroyers
550 tons, 4 5-inch guns (4 single guns), 6 14-inch torpedo tubes, 25.5 knots, belt 1 inch, conning tower 3 inches

Armada das Colônias
- 2 Principe Class Battleships - (Santo Alberto, Lisboa)
- 6 Gabriel Class Armoured Cruisers
12 Colonias Class Destroyers
600 tons, 6 5-inch guns (6 single guns), 2 18-inch torpedo tubes, 26 knots, belt 1 inch, conning tower, 5 inches

The Portuguese Coast Guard also oversees the construction of Naval Defences. Harbours such as Porto and Lisboa all have major Naval Batteries that range from 6 inches to 12 inches in calibre. They were also recently put in place in 1901 after increased funding and a need to counter ships with better belt armour. The government frequently updates and expands the Navy and its long history has seen many victories. While many might think there would be complacency in the Navy, it is surprisingly the least corrupt institution in Portugal as too many respect the Navy tradition of honour. The Navy constantly updates its tactics and conducts simulated exercises and sea trials to test the abilities of its sailors. The navy is an all regular force. However, conscripts who serve well and show the characteristics of a good sailor are offered to take it up as a job and it is usually a great honour. Naval schools in Porto and Lisboa produce find graduates who immediately take of positions in the Navy. This promotion by merit and not affiliation ensures the Navy does not suffer the pitfalls the army does. There is even a limit to how long one can serve actively with the Old Guard upon reaching 60 having to step down for the younger generation of leaders. the Navy is one of the few jobs were pensions are provided for life after service and is hence a very attractive service.

Naval Weakness : Despite the Armada Portuguesa's long history, due to the small size and economy of Portugal, it can no longer sustain the hundreds of wooden ships it once could and had to opt for a smaller and more capability driven navy. This was to the dismay of many Navy hawks who reminisced the time when the Portuguese were hundreds of ships strong. Therefore, if faced with a larger conflict with France, no matter the strength of the navy, France would be able to outproduce Portugal in terms of number of ships and this numerical disadvantage has forced Portugal to not maintain its powerful place as the world's policeman but instead forge alliances and friendships to maintain its precarious situation. Hence, the Navy's job has become more diplomatic in nature than war.

National Goals: To keep the Nation's Naval Dominance in the region, maintain the borders of the realm, forge new alliances with European Powers to ensure Portugal's security in the region and if possible expand her colonial possessions elsewhere. However, Portugal is not in a position to have grand ideas of taking back Galicia or going to war with Spain so Portugal's aim is to remain peaceful unless the opportunity arises. Potential allies such as the Western Roman Empire must be secured for Portugal's safety. Diplomacy will be the national focus.

National Issues: To maintain the delicate balance and prevent a possible revolution. Internal turmoil is growing as the literate populace wants to establish a Republic and rid the monarchy. A slowdown in industrialisation is occurring and unemployment is rising, privatisation may be the answer and mercantilism may have to stop in favour of open free market trading. Portugal is at the crossroads on if it should reform it's old ways or continue down its Absolutist path. Either way, there is bound to be great uncertainty.

History : The start of Portugal for many was when its navy was founded in 1317. During those times, the Western Roman Empire was still powerful and Spain was a serious threat. King Denis the Great would fight a long war from 1305-1324 for the conquest of Evora (Southern Portugal) against neighbouring princes. He was successful at first but great power intervention forced King Denis to withdraw and nothing was gained from the conflict. It was during this time that the Navy was formed due to the fact Portugal found itself woefully unprepared against other powers of that time. In fact, Portugal, being the descendants of the Celtiberians and Lusitanians (Barbarians in the Roman eyes), they were frequently attacked by the Roman Empires of that time. It was missionaries in 1340 that started to convert the populace and the Pagan traditions of old started to die out rapidly.

By the year 1458, Portugal under a King Emmanuel II fought a brutal war for the claims on Evora once again. It was in 1460 that the battle of the coast of Lisboa took place. The Spanish armies marched into Lisboa where the Royal Guards of Archers defended valiantly, at the same time, the blockade of Lisboa was starving the men. On May 3rd, the Armada of 87 ships of Portugal and her allies set sail from Porto and met the Coalition fleet of 156 ships. The battle lasted 2 days but under the brilliant tactician 1st Rate Fleet Admiral Ramirez Diego. He valiantly crossed the "T" with his ships and sent the coalition fleet into disarray. The entire coalition armada was crushed and the attack on Lisboa was lifted. By 1472, Portugal claimed Evora and is the mainland Portugal we see today.

The occurring in the Western and Eastern Roman Empires greatly affected the state of religion in Portugal. Before, the Cardinals and Archbishops all were loyal to the traditional Roman Catholic Church of the Western Roman Empire. However, it was between in the late 1400s to lates 1500s did the church start to become more Chalcedonic in nature due to influence from Spain adopting it. This greatly decreased our standing with the Pope and several Cardinals were outraged by the proposal. Less because the new Church was being adopted but more because the state was influencing Church affairs (Ironic). Eventually, with government backdoor intervention, the Patriarchate of Lisboa and all the 3 Ecclesiastical Provinces adopted the Chalcedonic Church and abandoned the Pope, several people who help jobs closely related to matters dealing with the Pope rose their banners and took up arms. The Pope proceeded to excommunicate King Emmanuel II and a bloody war broke out. It was only when the Rebel stronghold of Catholic Zealots in Faro was crushed by a decisive siege battle led by the King himself did the war end. Slowly, the Pope moved out of the picture as the power came from the number of subjects that adhered to him. Catholic Zealots who saw the Pope as their leader would continue to spark chaos and rebellion up till the 1700s. For this, King Emmanuel II is also Saint Emmanuel, the Patron Saint of the Portuguese Chalcedonic Church.

In 1498, Vasco Da Gama discovered a trade route to India and thus began the Age of Discovery. Many other Portuguese sailors and navigators would try their luck and die in the deep depths of the Ocean they set sail to conquer. In 1532, the war was declared against Spain to claim Galicia. After a humiliating defeat at A Coruna, Portugal entered a period of peace and isolationism for the next 50 years under King Ferdinand De Souza the Coward. After a failed succession and the Portuguese Chalcedonic Church declaring war against the King, killing him and his family, the new King, Vittorio Vento I reopened the nation to trade.

After long periods of constant war with Spain to Portugal's modern borders, relations began to cool to 1906 levels a century after the failed invasion of Galicia. Trade between the Spanish and Portuguese naturally increased due to the close proximity and road connections between the 2 nations. It was to be a start of an era of prosperity for Portugal without having to worry over the defence of the mainland, funds could be directed toward state projects and it was from 1540-1567 that the Lisboa Chalcedonic Cathedral finished construction. It was truly a sight to behold and it still stands today, the home church of the Latin Patriarchate of Lisboa.

It was in 1582 did King Christiano Vento III founded the 1st colony in Angola. This created great exuberance and excitement within mainland Portugal. Imperialism was all the rage and respectively, the colonies of Mozambique, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Zambia were founded in 1598, 1636, 1768 and 1787. The inner parts of Africa were colonised later due to the impression that there was nothing of value there. Upon striking gold in Angola, there was a gold rush between the years of 1612-1678 and many European Portuguese settled there. The first of many Colonial conflicts occurred in 1658 when the Angolan tribes rose up to attack Portuguese settlements. In harsh retaliation, many natives were murdered and killed. At the same time, spreading the religion to Africa. However, in the 1825 colonial conflict, certain tribes impressed the Portuguese for fighting so valiantly and Army Corps was created comprising of these men and they were paid handsomely.

In the 1870s, as the rate of industrialisation increased rapidly, literacy rates went up along with it and several labour unions were formed to complain of the tough lives of the people and the undemocratic system of governance. Anti-Monarchy sentiment grew across the country and King Carlos I is in a precarious situation. That being said, the GDP and economy of Portugal boomed during the years of 1870-1904. Massive textile factories were built and products were being churned out at a rapid pace. Communication has never been faster without the telegram. However, things began to slow down and protest were common on the streets of Lisboa over the poor quality of living. Portugal has reached a tipping point.

I'm sorry that it's taken so long for someone to take a look at this; I thought that Oscal was dealing with it. I'm even more sorry to say that I'm afraid I have to reject your application. Your religious history doesn't make sense considering that the Roman Catholic Church is a part of the united Chalcedonian Church in our timeline, which you don't seem to have understood, and what's more you haven't really understood what it is we desire from you in terms of a roleplay sample. What you've provided tells us nothing about your writing ability. On top of all that, there's nothing terribly unique or interesting about your proposed alternate-history; I can see that you're setting up for a revolution in Portugal, but given that Portugal went through a revolution IRL a whopping four years after the RP's start date, that's not terribly original either.

Don't count yourself too done with the Romans yet! I've still got a senator to send over there.
