But it was Ali Arslan Khan which lead to the massive expansion of the Khanate and what lead it to its current boarders and it was his death which would set of what was called the Kurluk war. This happened immediately after the death of Ali Arslan Khan when his son Ahmad Arslan Qara Khan succeeds him as Khan but wanting to keep the rest of the family away from power they are posted to far positions of the Khanate one of those being his brother Ziya Aziz Alp who was placed in charge of the recently conquered Sogdian people. While there Ziya adopted the Manichaeist faith as his own in exactly 1000 A.D, this was after he supposedly saw a vision of Mani and Jesus telling him that the Khanate would be the sword of light if it rejected the dark Prophet Muhammad. Seeing this as a excellent way to get rid of one of his brothers Ahmad sought to arrest Ziya and execute him for being an apostate, Ziya would march against using the Native Sogdians and converts from his Tribe he went to war with his brother. The war would not last long after one battle Ziya killed Ahmad in combat with his own hands and completely destroyed his army, it was at that moment that he declared himself a warrior of Mani and in a ceremony it was said that the rest of Ahmad's army converted to Manichaeism and they were declared the warriors of Light. The remaining Muslim vassals of the Khanate remained silent as Ziya declared himself Khan. Ziya first order of business was to convert the Khanate to Manichaeism and as such introduce many policies such as revoking titles from Muslim rulers and giving them to more loyal Manichaeist rulers, another stratagy Ziya used was to promote the minor religions in his Khanate to gather them to his side. After just five years of rule Ziya had converted most of the rulers of the Khanate to Manichaeism mostly through his shrewd thinking and tactics. By 1010 nearly all of the population of the Khanate has converted and the Khahate had conquered Bukhara and the rest of the Turan. He took part in his fathers conquests and became a fierce warrior in the whole of the Khanate but after his fathers death he was lost. His only saving grace was that he sent to rule over the newly conquered Sogdia Mountains. This area had a large Manichaeian population the Muslims had not fully converted the people over to Islam. As he spent more time with them he converted to Manichaeism in 1000 and began to process of creating an independent Manichaeian state, but that was cut short when his brother declared war on him. During the battle of the Iron gate a force of around 2000 Manichaeian soldiers fought against a 13,000 force lead by his brother Ahmad. The battle of the Iron gate resulted in almost 9000 captured men and 3000 losses including Ahmad himself for his army while Ziya only lost around 300 men in the fighting. This victory proclaimed that he was holy warrior of Mani and that his victory showed the that god was on his side, as such he gave the prisoners a simple offer, become Manichaeists or be burned alive for defying the holy will of God. After the 9000 men converted he marched through the Khanate putting down any other loads that wanted him dead.
