God Wills It!


INTRO:
The year is 1095, and trouble has reached the Kingdoms of Christ. The Empire of Greece (Byzantine) had been failing to the Saracens (Muslims) for years, and it appeared only a matter of time before Constantinople, the Capital of the Hellenes and an important City of Christendom, would fall to Saracen hands. The Pope, the highest spiritual authority of Western Christians, and the Roman (Byzantine) Emperor, the highest ruler of Eastern Christians, had convened several meetings and agreed that something had to be done, not just about the Saracens, but about the violence between the Christians. Soon, the Pope shall declare a Holy War against the Saracens with 2 main objectives; save the Greek Empire, and retake Jerusalem in the name of Christ.

Meanwhile, in the land of the Muslims, the word of Allah was appearing to fail; the Power of the Caliph had been greatly diminished by various powers, and dangerous Alzanadiqa (Heretics) have been gaining power in lands once held by the Righteous. The Muslims, feeling a sense that society is on a decline, have started turning to more Orthodox and Hard Line interpretations of the Qu'ran and the Hadiths, regardless of what the Caliph commands. As the Sultans and Emirs of Allah fight each other for land and power, they have no idea that soon the Latins (Christians) would be upon them.

The Dark Blue Caucus's and lower Steppes allow you to be any of these Religions in this Region. If there is a Religion that would fit in these Categories that aren't listed, please ask me, and I will see if they can be added.
• Non-Historical States are allowed, but they must be realistic. For instance, a Druze Jerusalem Emirate would be allowed, but a Norse Pagan State in Africa would not.
• Your nation can not be bigger then Modern day Iran, unless its based on a Historical state like the Seljuq Empire.
• You can declare that you are the Holy Roman Emperor, but your nation can not be the Holy Roman Empire due to how it's structured. You must have a Nation that would logically be in the HRE and be the ruler of that Nation as well in order to be the Emperor.
• History is written by those who sign up first; meaning that if Nation X establishes that Nation Y was broken apart by them, and a person wants to play Nation Y, their application would be rejected.
• Every new Page will be a new Month. Page 1 will November, 1095, and so Page 2 will be December, 1095, and so on and so on.
• Every page, certain nations, or even entire regions, will be affected by Random Events. This will affect your nation, and potentially cause domino effects that may lead to the decline or death of your nation without any sort of intervention.
• Every post should begin with the city and month/year (and an optional Day). For instance:

• You must ask to rally soldiers in your own nation. When you do, the OP will roll 3 20 sided Dice to see how many troops you rally. No Nations army can surpass 5,000 Troops.
  Combat between 2 nations, PC/PC or PC/NPC, will be controlled by the OP, who will roll two 20 sided Dice for 3-4 stages of Combat; the preparation phase, the actual fight, a retreat of the losing side and a potential 2nd fight if the retreating force rallies. Army Sizes and certain Events will add benefits and detriments in the rolling phases.
• Combat between NPC nations will be decided with 2 Simple Dice Rolls, 1 representing each army.
• Military Commanders must be established before, or with, the summoning of Armies, unless they come from an Event. Military Commanders have 2 Attributes, Stategim and Command, that are rolled for with 1 20-sided Die each. Both these Attributes increase your Armies chances of beating the opposing Army.

King Harold falls in the battle of Hastings, and the Normans and the Norwegians invade England from two directions. Both Harald and William claims the throne, and they eventually fight each other, until a peace is made a year later. They agree to share the throne, and seal the deal with a wedding between William's son Robert and Harald's daughter Ingegerd.

Now that Harald and William are dead, Robert is the king, and Ingegerd his queen. However, it's hardly easy for them. Robert's brothers scheme in the background to oust him, the English public is unsatisfied with a foreign dynasty ruling over them, and Robert's claims to the Duchy of Normandy and the kingdom of Norway, particularly the latter, are being challenged as well.

Culture:

Swedish culture is very Nordic and Germanic with most of the north being the toughest people. The north is the wilderness of Scandinavia and life there is hard. Therefore the people of the north are very different from the southern city dwellers. They live though lives often hunting massive elk the size of houses (exaggeration of course). The northerners are very isolated with many not even aware that they are part of a massive Scandinavian empire and some have never had human contact since the dark ages. They tell tales of folklore around the roaring fire in their distant forest cabins. Of beast that snatch up children if they misbehave and fairies that grant wishes to the purest of hearts. But in the most northern parts, Paganism is still practiced despite the past kings having attempted and failed to quell them. They are beginning to waver in number, however. The northerners, though seeing the southerners as weaklings, still consider them Nordic Brothers. To the south are the city dwellers who are the richest. They enjoy the wealth of the Empire and the Germanic influence of the south. Many of them are great inventors, sailors, and leaders. They are responsible for the running of the empire. They are soft yet are ready to answer the call of the King and fight for the Empire at all costs. To the west are the old dying viking tribes. They are now few in numbers as they are slowing being replaced by the southerners but still desptratly holding onto their traditions. They are still the great sailors but are no longer raiders of old but rather peaceful fishermen.

History:

The Heartland (MT Sweden) was unified in 999 under the leadership of Olof Skötkonung who declared a united Swedish empire with him as their King. For the next years, he would battle and subdue the dying Viking tribes of South Norway finally bringing under his control in 1022. Sadly upon hearing the news of victory he let himself fall to old age but not before his last words were uttered to his court and people, "My dream is complete, but our destiny is not. We must unite all of Scandinavia under the imperial banner and bring her to glories untold.". His successor, Anund Jakob, would swear upon Olaf's grave that he would complete their destiny. Anund spent much of his life attempting to civilize and conquer the last Viking tribes to the north. He would wage a long war of conquest against these savages but again and again he was thrown back. With rising anger against the war that was taxing them so heavily the lords of the south rebelled. Sweden was plunged into civil war until 1039 when the city of Linkoping surrendered and their loyalist population purged. Anund himself was last seen fleeing into the wastes of the north. His heir, supported by the lords of the south, was Gunnar Blomquist. But he was nothing more than a puppet for the lords. Despite this, peace was achieved during those years and trade flourished for the years 1050-1060. It is here that the expansion of Germanic culture into Southern Sweden could be seen clearly. Upon Gunnar Blomquist death from cancer, the Empire faced crisis once more as Gunnar Blomquist heir, Vilgot Blom, refused to submit to the puppetry of the southern lords. He survived an assassination attempt by the lords and ordered their arrest. The lords refused, raising armies of their own to dethrone this upstart king. The lords eventually drove Vilgot Blom out of Stockholm installing a puppet king, Edmund to the throne. But instead of being found and executed Vilgot fled to the north gathering what armies he could. Upon hearing news of another army, the lords gathered their own army outside Stockholm. The brutal battle that ensued left more than 130,000 dead on both sides but Vilgot was victorious. Edmund was exiled to the land of England where he still lives to this day though constantly ravaged by age and sickness. The lords were culled but in 1083, Vilgot died during a feast. The council scrambled as fast as they could to find an heir, as to avoid another civil war and found Vidar Bergman. The young king, seeking to prove himself, embarked to conquer the rich lands of Denmark in 1069. The conflict quickly spiraled out of control with Prussia and the nomadic Asian people of Finland joining on the Danish side or exploiting the distraction. The war devastated Denmark and much of Southern Sweden until Vidar Bergman, now old from the long war, was told of Swedish victory in the siege of Copenhagen in 1085 which forced all sides to a peace deal giving the empire the Danish province of Amager. In 1087, Vidar sought vengeance upon the nomadic Finnish people and set out on a war of extermination. He was largely successful at first but attrition began to wear his armies down. The war would be characterized by the nomads using hit and runs on his armies but the brute force of Sweden hit them hard. In 1091, Vidar died of old age but not before, in his last battle, at the banks of Lake Ladoga drove away the nomads from Finland. His heir is our current King. His name is Gustaf Adolf. He believes he was crowned by God, not by the bishops of the local churches, as his power is divine.

The majority of people in the Romuvian Union follow the many different beliefs of the baltics. However the baltic religions in the Romuvian Union is slowly being revitalised in the Romuvian Movement, a movement that seeks to turn the many beliefs of the baltic people into a single unified religion. The Movement involves transitioning from oral tales to a written scripture and a structured organisation of priesthood and spiritual leaders. The Romuvian Union also has a minority of Christian and Norse Pagan individuals within their borders.

Furious, the King of Poland sent forth a invasion against Prussia, to attempt to quash the “savages” that he claimed “threatened all of Christendom.” However, just a single year into his invasion he was slain in battle. While the Polish armies still outnumbered and were better equipped than the Prussian armies, they were pulled back and had to deal with a succession war against a pretender on the throne. This left the north-eastern lands of Poland vulnerable, and the Prussians quickly occupied the lands by 1002. In order not to further threaten the heartlands of Poland, or attacks from behind during their war against the pretender, a treaty was quickly drafted. The Prussians were to keep the lands that they had occupied. After this great victory, King Vilius I Greater Prussia was formed in 1005.

After the war with Poland, Greater Prussia eventually took more territory to the north and the east into Lithuania. With the death of Vilius I came the reign of Vilius II, a king who did not focus on conquests and war, but instead looked to securing the realm and its people. To do this he enforced the education and dominance of the Prussian language and customs on the people in an attempt to culturally unify the nation. He tried to find a solution to the Christianization efforts of the western nations and started the Romuvian movement. He believed if he created written scripture and established a organised priesthood his nation and people would be able to resist Christianity. With the Romuvian Movement he created the The Grand Union of Romuva, a new kingdom title which replaced Greater Prussia, and claimed that it is the divine right to unite all Lithuanian Pagans under one banner and rule. Under his long reign, he set up the Romuvian movement and created a system to enforce Prussian culture. Many resisted his rapid changes and fought back, but the rebellions were quickly crushed under military intervention. In 1092 Vilius II died in his bed, and left the kingdom in the hands of his eldest son, King Darvilas. Darvilas holds the throne and seek to claim the rest of Lithuania and the Baltic states as is the divine right of the Romuvian Union.

Yes, Battles will be decided by Dice; 3-4 phases of Battle between the 2 (or more) armies, with each Army getting individual rolls. However, the Army sizes and certain events (Say you've gained a Hermit the Preacher type Character who discovers a holy relic) will have impacts on all the Battle Phases, positive or negative (So an army of 5 can't beat 10,000 soldiers). I couldn't think of a better way to do Fights then this.

Very Interesting lore. I like this a lot. My only curiosity is why Shi'ite Islam is tolerated in mainly Sunni Spain? Was that because of the Islamic Republic foundation?

Well, had your app been accepted I would've argued that while I meant in my app that Harald Hardrada was king of Norway in 1066, I could've rolled with your contradiction of having his older half-brother, who was king of Norway in 1022 (unless you went alt-his here) having been ousted by the Swedes, no problem there. However, that would mean that king Robert, through his wife, the niece of the deposed king, had a claim to the Norwegian throne, as would his heirs. Then, if you were protestant, he could get papal support to retake it. But I see we'll need to work out something else (though if you keep Harald Hardrada until at least 1068 that'd be nice).

For the moment, I don't think I have problems with the moors or saracens (depends on Spain down here), but I agree that I have other problems, such as the other rulers of the British Isles, and the French ones too. The North is however also important and while I wouldn't have rushed to war with you, it would only have been a matter of time before we clashed.

However, there's another solution. Have one of Harald's sons inherit Norway and then... something I'm too sleepy to put in good words now... That would be less action-y though.
