Dune: The War for

Image

"A beginning is a very delicate time. Know then that it is the year 10,191. The Known Universe is ruled by the Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV, my father. In this time, the most precious substance in the universe is the spice Melange. The spice extends life. The spice expands consciousness. The spice is vital to space travel. The Spacing Guild and its navigators, who the spice has mutated over 4,000 years, use the orange spice gas, which gives them the ability to fold space. That is, travel to any part of the universe without moving.
Oh, yes. I forgot to tell you — the spice exists on only one planet in the entire universe. A desolate, dry planet with vast deserts. Hidden away within the rocks of these deserts are a people known as the Fremen, who have long held a prophecy that a man would come, a messiah who would lead them to true freedom. The planet is Arrakis, also known as Dune."

--Manual of Muad'Dib by the Princess Irulan

In the year 10,191 A.C the Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV issued a challenge to the Great Houses of the Landsraad: whoever can control Arrakis in an all-out war will have a permanent fief on the planet. And so, began a war the likes never before seen.

--A History of the Arrakeen War

Premise

Welcome to Dune: The War for Arrakis, an RP based on the classic science fiction media franchise Dune. In this RP, you will play as a servant to one of the Great Houses who, at the behest of the Emperor, will fight for supremacy over the desert planet and the source of the spice Melange. Which of the Houses will prevail, does the Emperor have a deeper purpose for this little game, and what of the Fremen who make Dune their home, and search for a prophet? Only time will tell in Dune: The War for Arrakis

The Planet Arrakis
Image

The planet Arrakis is one of the most desolate places in the known universe: a desert planet that consists almost exclusively of sand, scattered mountains, and weathered rocky outcrops. Little native life can exist on Arrakis, save for some small vegetation in the form of bushes and shrubs, and some small animals like the kit fox. kangaroo mice, the desert hare, the sand terrapin as well as some predators such as the desert hawk, dwarf owl, eagle, and desert owl. Among the arthropods that are able to live in the harsh environment are the scorpion, centipede, trapdoor spider, biting wasp, and the wormfly

The most famous of Arrakis' natural lifeforms is, of course, the sandworm. Sandworms can grow to massive sizes and have been known to eat vehicles whole.

Arrakis is also home to the "native" humans called Fremen, a nomadic desert people who live among the rocky outcrops and have little contact with outsiders, but who have created a rich and complex society among the dunes.

Despite the harsh environment, Arrakis is perhaps the single most important planet in the galaxy for one simple reason: the spice Melange. Melange is the single most expensive commodity in the universe and can only be found on Arrakis, and is indispensable to civilisation. For this reason, "whoever controls Dune controls the spice, and whoever controls the spice controls the galaxy."

Rules

The OP's word is law. That isn't to say that my mind can't be changed, of course. I'm human and am fallible on occasion

Co-OPs are my eyes and ears when I am unavailable. Respect them as you would me.

Absolutely no one-liners. One-liners are the death of RPs, and if you can't write AT LEAST three lines, wait until you can do so.

No godmodding, metagaming, et cetera. These battles are massive and complicated; multitudes of men will die in a single battle. No one is omniscient or omnipotent, so expect to take losses. If you can’t decide who wins, I’ll make a call.

Have fun!

Two questions:

1.) Are we using only the lore of the Original Dune Books? Because in the Original Dune Books, the thinking machines were destroyed because they were replacing humans in crucial jobs (metaphorical enslavement), with no indication that they were even hostile or fighting back.

2.) Can I be a radical Ixian who wants to reverse the Butlerian Jihad and restore the Thinking Machines?

I prefer the canon from the Original Dune

That would be possible. The Emperor's proposition is for any house, but in this case, it would be the Ixian Confederacy to have representatives "in the game"

1.) Me as well.

2.) Perfect. Another potential choice for me would be Atreides; how powerful would they be in this alternate universe?

They would be as powerful as they are at the start on Dune. So, powerful enough for Shaddam to fear them.

Name: Duchess Aurora Aterides

Age: 60 but looks 20 due to the effects of the Spice Melange, and still fertile due to the latter.

Gender: Female.

House Allegiance: House Aterides

Appearance:

Bio: Aurora Aterides was the firstborn daugther of Ajax Aterides, a forward-thinking Duke who had strengthened the House military to the quality of the Emperor's Sardaukar. Due to the machinations of the Bene Gesserit, Ajax had no other children, thus pushing him to recognize Aurora as his heir. Born as strong as a male, Aurora showed a keen intelligence matched by a stubborn desire to have things her way. And of course, great beauty, such that the current Heir of House Harkonnen had the audacity to propose marriage to her to heal the rift between their houses. The Bene Gesserit showed up again, trying to persuade her to accept said proposal.

She refused, and her father, who despised the Harkonnens and had an inkling that the Bene Gesserit were behind his infertility, stood beside her. But knowing that the Bene Gesserit and the Harkonnens were immensely powerful, they sought out allies in order to shore up their position as they could not stand against such pressure forever. They found said allies among the Ixians, machine-users who avoided the worst excesses of the Butlerian Jihad, and House Ordos, a 'heretical' Great House who were only one level above the Harkonnens in depravity, but whose main advantage was that they were not seeking to marry of anyone of their family to Aurora.

But even this wasn't enough when the Imperial Throne came calling; Shaddam IV himself commanded Aurora to marry the Harkonnens' heir, paid off by huge bribes from the latter's House. And Ajax and Aurora had to bow.

The marriage occured in Caladan itself, an insult to its people and House Aterides itself. Almost immediately, the Harkonnen Heir and Aurora began arguing, and soon said arguments began to escalate into physical violence on both sides, followed by reluctant... Marital Relations that Aurora consented to only to have a child to continue the line; after that, she planned to kill the Harkonnen Heir and then claim House Harkonnen itself in the name of her child.

But alas, when she finally gave birth to a daugther, the Harkonnen Heir siezed the hour of her labor to kill Ajax Aterides, her father, and attempt a coup to take over Caladan.

But even after childbirth, Aurora had enough strength to stand her ground, having asked her father's Loyal Battle-Mentat and Swordmaster to prepare loyal forces to counterattack the Harkonnens before they can sieze all of the cities. And so as battle raged in the streets of Caladan's planetary capital, Aurora directed her armies even as she nursed her child. Because of this, the Harkonnen forces were driven off the planet within two weeks, and Aurora was not only reigning supreme, but also declaring her intention to claim House Harkonnen's domains for herself.

Then Shaddam opened Arrakis for open warfare between the Houses.

Postition: Head of House Aterides.

Skills: Personal Combat, Military Tactics, Politics and Economics.

Personality: Aurora Aterides is a determined woman whose experiences under the Padishah Empire's system have soured her on how the Galaxy worked, and whose natural compassion, though buried under her grief and rage and ambition, still burns buried deeply. Influenced by the Ixians and House Ordos, she has become cynical towards the religion and ideology of the Padishah Empire after the Butlerian Jihad, and part of her believes that the institutionalized slavery and objectification of human beings that had taken place after the fall of the thinking machines was a worse fate to Humanity than the metaphorical enslavement by said Thinking Machines...

She is also bisexual, attracted to women as well as men.

Strengths and Weaknesses:

Ixian Alliance - Aurora has developed increasinly strong ties with Ix and its machines, and has promoted preachers and priests less hostile to Ixian technology within her domain.

Claim to House Harkonnen - Through her daugther, the child of the now-dead former Heir to House Harkonnen, Aurora claims rule of Geidi Prime, House Harkonnen's homeworld, as well as her own domains.

Weak House Ordos Ties - Aurora has contacts in House Ordos, and has done favors from them in the past.

Military Forces - Aurora has one of the best-trained and best-drilled military forces in the Galaxy, with some members even being better than the Emperor's Sardaukar, along with Sonic Tanks.

Likes/dislikes:

Likes: Melange Candy, Combat, Gardens.

Dislikes: House Harkonnen, the Tleilaxu, and the Bene Gesserit.
