US Pres. Election 1912 RP (Closed, 1916 if enough interest)

Presidential Election 1912
After Teddy Roosevelt pledged to the American people that he would not seek a third term as President in 1908, his hand-picked successor and the incumbent President William Howard Taft, took over to continue Republican control of the White House. Taft now seeks a second term and will do so on his own merits, having steered his own course rather than simply continuing all of Roosevelt's policies. Roosevelt, angered by what he sees as Taft's abandonment of his legacy and believing he is the only man for the job, plans to challenge Taft for the Republican nomination. The split between the progressive and conservative wings of the GOP looms large. The Democrats, meanwhile, seek their own candidate to challenge Taft. The field is wide open, since William Jennings Bryan will not run again, as he has done three times before. The questions of the day are progressive reforms, from eugenics to workers' compensation to antitrust.

But that's the stage in real life. It's up to you to re-enact history, or to change it. Will Roosevelt challenge Taft, and form a third party if he loses? Will Taft even seek a second term? Will the Democrats go with a fresh face, or will The Great Commoner ride again? And what about third parties? The Socialist and Prohibition Parties could play an important role.

How to play:
-You may pick any politician/political figure from the period who is constitutionally eligible to run for President. From national figures to little known representatives. However, well-known figures would obviously have a greater advantage.
-Candidates should make campaign stops (please name the town/city and state of each campaign stop) and make public statements. There are no radio or TV ads. You may use paper posters or ads.
-Once a candidate wins their party's primary, they must choose a running mate. They can be one of their former opponents in the primary or someone new. If they choose someone new they can RP as them as well. Players who have been defeated in the primary may campaign on behalf of their party's nominee. In SOME cases, they may break off and form a third party candidacy with OP's approval. I will lay out those rules.
-OP will post polls at random times.
-OP will also post national political events and candidates can respond to these events in ways that will help (or unintentionally harm) their campaign. These events may be both actual events that happened or events made up by OP.

Rules:
-OP is god.
-OP makes random events at will and controls what non-player figures do.
-You may post as often as you want, but you may only have three consecutive posts.
-No satire candidates.
-Candidates must have the same ideology as they did IRL. So please quickly skim a Wikipedia article on your candidate to see their positions at the time (1912).
-History has been the way it was IRL up until this point.

Hints:
-1912 presidential election actual results
-Remember, the maps are not modern day maps. The South is mostly Democratic, not Republican. Not all states are in play (no Alaska, Hawaii, or DC).
-Making statements on issues may help you in some places, but hurt you in others.
-When choosing a running mate, you may want to pick someone who will help in areas that you're weak in. A northern liberal may need a more conservative southerner to help balance the ticket.
-Everything you say will probably be used against you in every possible way.

Third Party Rules

There are no restrictions on Socialist or Prohibition candidates. There may or may not be people who choose to run under those party banners, but if somebody wants to run, they will exist, unlike other third parties. A Progressive Party may only be formed if we have a Teddy Roosevelt, he loses the Republican primary, and wants to run third party. If there is no Roosevelt, if he wins the Republican nomination, or if he chooses not to run, there will be no Progressive Party. No "Fighting Bob" or Hiram Johnson Progressive run, they are just not big enough names.

Winning the Nomination

Each state will have delegates equal to their electoral vote. We will have several states choose their delegates through primaries. These states are, for both Republicans and Democrats, North Dakota, South Dakota, New York, New Jersey, California, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Nebraska, Oregon, Maryland, and Ohio. The others will be up for grabs at the convention. I will update maps with winners of primaries and those candidates who seem to have a lock on one or another state's delegates. Some states will remain uncommitted until the convention. Candidates from a state without a primary will have an automatic lock on those delegates. You are encouraged to wheel and deal with other candidates to gain support or block another candidate, and you may tailor your policies to appeal to one state or another. It will require a majority of delegates to be elected for the sake of simplicity (sorry, no two-thirds rule for the Democrats).

One other Republican-specific note: Taft is the leader of the party and controls the patronage. Since the Republican Party in the South is mostly members who have federal jobs and other such things, Taft will start with those states committed to him.

Winning the Election

You must win a majority of the electoral vote to be elected. If nobody reaches a majority, it will go to the House of Representatives, controlled by Democrats, and the Democrat will likely be elected President.

You are not limited to the big names and you may choose any political figure from the time period who was eligible to be President. But here is a list of high profile potential candidates at the time. Bigger names will get more support than little known people.

Democrats
Champ Clark: Speaker of the House from Missouri, seen as the early leader and with a lot of institutional support, but not necessarily a progressive, which will unite some corners of the party against him.
Woodrow Wilson: Reform governor of New Jersey, former president of Princeton. Seen as a progressive and a corruption fighter.
Judson Harmon: Moderate progressive who is the governor of Ohio. Mostly a "favorite son" candidacy, but he is the governor of a large swing state, which could give him some appeal if the convention deadlocks.
Oscar Underwood: House Majority Leader from Alabama. Draws on some of the same institutional support as Clark and could be a compromise candidate or a play to Democrats' southern base. Regarded as somewhat of a progressive as well.
Thomas Marshall: Governor of Indiana. Progressive reformer who tried to push through constitutional change in Indiana to achieve progressive goals. Won election in a key swing state and could be a compromise candidate or potential VP.
William Jennings Bryan: He may be a three-time loser, but he is still a vigorous campaigner and has a lot of sway in the progressive wing. Could emerge as a consensus candidate if the Democrats really can't get anywhere with their nomination.

Republicans
William Howard Taft: Incumbent President. Has the support of the GOP's conservative wing, considered a relative moderate. Skilled governor, but can't compete with Roosevelt's wattage on the campaign trail. Nevertheless, starts with major advantages.
Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt: Former Governor of New York, Vice President, and President. Enormous personality, undoubted progressive, imperialist on foreign issues. Will need to win over non-progressives to be GOP nominee. Lots of star power, lacks structural advantages.
Robert "Fightin' Bob" LaFollette: Former US Representative and Governor from Wisconsin, current Wisconsin senator. Also a progressive, and intends to challenge Taft, though if Roosevelt runs, they will split the progressive vote and hand the nomination to Taft.

Socialists
Eugene Debs: Candidate for president in 1900, 1904, and 1908. Seen as the only man who can keep the conservative and radical wings of the party together.
Bill Haywood: Leader of the radicals. Affiliated with the IWW or "Wobblies", favors general strikes and use of labor unions and agitation to disrupt capitalist system.

Prohibition
Eugene Chafin: Lawyer and 1908 nominee of the Prohibition Party.

This will be a tough uphill battle, but I feel like Taft is the right choice for me.

Name: William Howard Taft
Party: Republican
Current or former office held: President of the United States. Most notably, he has served as Secretary of War and Civilian Governor of the Phillippines and is a prominent lawyer and former judge.

I feel like that’s already covered by the rules. OP controls all NPCs and no candidate would assassinate another. I will clarify that saying your candidate either was assassinated or survivors an assassination attempt is out of bounds.

Welcome, Robo-Nixon! The stage is set for a bruising and thrilling Republican primary.

Putting a cap on his New York Campaign Theodore Roosevelt stopped in Rochester, New York to give a speech and hold a rally, this time he was introduced by Senator Elihu Root of New York, his personal friend and former Secretary of State and War in his administration. He was someone Roosevelt would have considered for a position as Vice President but the Constitution forbid the President and the Vice President being from the same state. Perhaps most importantly he was the talk of the state and the nation as he was expected to win the Nobel Peace Prize as Theodore Roosevelt had years before.
(Image)

Additionally he met with outgoing (but still influential) Senator Chauncey Depew who had actually nominated Roosevelt for Governor in 1898 and was a longtime ally. He was also rich and would help fund the Roosevelt campaign and outreach in the Northeast, which was vital considering Roosevelts rejection of party bosses.

(Image)

Roosevelt was confident that his home state of New York was safe in his column, with 3 massive rallyies and several key allies in place that would control the delegates and influence the population, Teddy moved South towards Pennsylvania.

Dentali, I'd like you to remove the reference to Elihu Root here. IRL, Root was a major Taft supporter in 1912, and with Taft OOC in and therefore ICly at least considering running again, I think Root would have been neutral. It's fine to have Chauncey Depew, but Root is neutral until Taft does or does not declare.

I will put up another poll once people start campaigning outside their home states and I'd like to start the convention no later than Thursday the 14th, one week from today.

I changed it so Roosevelt just spoke with Root, instead of being introduced by him

Bump/our Taft has withdrawn and we desperately need another one. Or if you'd like to play as someone other than Taft in the Republican primary or a new Democrat to enter the race, that's good too!

New poll for the Republican primary will be up soon, nothing new for Democratic primary, since no activity has taken place. Conventions will happen this week, so get those final RPs in!

Valtrona, this is my mistake. I didn't realize Victor Berger was born outside the US and therefore constitutionally ineligible to be President. Eugene Debs and Bill Haywood are still eligible, or you're free to RP as a Democrat or Republican!
