The Ocean Planet of Veios is one of humanity's newest settlements in her new and slowly expanding galactic empire. Thanks to Alcubierre warp drives, FTL travel is possible. Though admittedly the generation and isolation of exotic matter has proven extremely difficult. Communication, however, is still bound by the laws of physics and must proceed AT light speed.
Why is this relevant?
Five years ago a communication from Veios was sent containing screams only describable as a mix of human and inhuman. Earth received this communication today. The Archon Six, the Heads of each major Earth department, universally agree that survivors are unlikely. But they are not willing to sacrifice the trillions of dollars that went into the infrastructure allowing Veios to be inhabitable and exploitable. So they're sending ExtraSolar Detachment Echo (ESDE, colloquially called Ez-Day) to deal with it. ESDE is equipped with military specialists, scientists and engineers who are trained to operate independently without contact with Earth. This is because once they reach Veios the communication window between it and Earth is 3 years.
Veios has very little surface landmass and the landmass it does have was unsuitable for development. All installations are therefore underwater at varying depths. Habitation installations are built closer to the surface to block radiation but allow enough stellar light in to enable the growth of food and the attachment of solar panels which partially power the installation above the water. Research installations are further down to study the biology and geology of the planet and its organisms. Research contains a fusion reactor which lost power a few hours after the last transmission was sent, getting it running will allow all Installations to be powered. The furthest down in the planet's equivalent of our abyssopelagic zone is the Mining installations. These installations are on the ocean floor and are built to resist the massive amounts of pressure bearing down on everything at such a depth. All resource extraction for use on Veios and for shipment elsewhere is done here.
All three installations lost contact with Earth at similar times so ESDE must systematically explore all three, beginning of course with Habitation. Once clear it can be retrofitted to support the team as they venture into the depths to explore Research and Mining. It should be noted that both the fusion reactor and facility manager AI are offline and located in Research, once both are back online the facility will regain most of its operational ability.
To get to Veios ESDE will be taking the Earthen vessel Athena. Athena is fitted with a state-of-the-art Alcubierre drive that cuts travel time down to only two months. Use this time to get to know the Detachment and familiarize yourself with the vessel because once you land you'll be on Veios for the foreseeable future, without outside contact.
One more thing, the Archon Six fully recognize that this is a difficult task to ask of you. Although the Athena possesses enough fuel to drift on a slower route back to Earth, they do not tolerate mutineers. If the logs are inconsistent and show the mission has not been completed, the remaining survivors will be tried for treason. But to motivate your team if the mission IS successful all survivors/deceased and their family's will be rewarded handsomely. Enough to live comfortably for life.
So for yours, Veios's, and Earth's sake... complete your damn mission.

To be designed
- Standard Forum Rules: Don't be an ass, no godmodding/metagaming, controlling NPCs like some sort of freakish hivemind etc. etc.
- I, the GM, have ultimate say on tough decisions like character deaths. I'm also the DC and thus the highest ranked member of the Detachment.
- Obey rank; listen to your commanders. You're not gonna mutiny stranded light years away from Earth. You know that your best chance to survive is to keep coordinated with your superiors and soldiers under you.
- Be realistic with your interactions. You were handpicked to be able to function well with your fellow men away from civilization in a stressful situation for at LEAST five years. In the same vein you DO have emotions such as fear, anger, sadness, etc.
- Strike and Support Team members, try and fill Alpha first, then Bravo, Charlie, etc. so we don't have a mishmash of people not able to interact with other player characters.
- No one-liners. At least a short paragraph, even for just dialogue.
- Try to remain active. I'll try to do the same to keep the map updated and give broad orders so that each team knows what to do.
- Given the number of NPCs they are SEMI-disposable. But PM me if you'd like to kill one off in your post, although 120 men is a lot, it IS limited.
At least a paragraph in the Personality, Biography and Reason for Induction sections. LEAVE UNIQUE ARMAMENTS BLANK UNTIL I MENTION OTHERWISE, STILL WRITING THEM ON MY END, HOPEFULLY WILL BE DONE BY MARCH 3RD!!

My Application
Character Name: Lucas "Jupiter" Danniston
Age: 38
Sex: Male
Nationality: Belgian (Lunar-born, but Belgian by nationality)
Team: Command
Squad: N/A
Role and Rank: Detachment Commander - Commanding Officer
Unique Armaments: N/A
Appearance: At 6' 2'' and 220 lbs Lucas is an imposing man to many. He has brown hair shaven to a military buzz cut and brilliant blue eyes. He sports a van Dyke-style beard of brown complexion though some gray has set it. He also possesses several scars on his cheek and forehead due to shrapnel wounds. His body is lean but muscular, standard for a member of of an Extrasolar Detachment. For 38, he looks aged to his late 40s. He is most often seen in his officer's kevlar which is navy blue and appears almost like a suit. If in combat he'll don similar gear to a Strike Team member.
Personality: Although he has received commendations for his strategic mind and excellent leadership skills where he shines most is interpersonally. Lucas is exceedingly compassionate and cares as much about preserving lives as he does completing the mission. Despite this he remains level-headed if lives are risk so that both these objectives can be accomplished. To ensure no preventable mistakes are made Lucas can be made furious in the face of incompetence and stupidity. This is to trim the fat from a very select cut of meat, one that must maintain the highest standards of operation. Lucas believes both punishment and reward can mold a soldier into a fine fighting machine and so he's also quick to allow for breaks after a well-fought battle. He's also been complemented on his sense of humour, which he implements to keep morale high.
Biography: Lucas was Lunar-born, and lived in Russel City with his parents for the first six years of his life before they could afford tickets to Earth. The transition to terrestrial gravity always puts a physical strain on those born on sub-g worlds and often leads to permanent disability or deformities as the body struggles to adapt. His father kept the family physically fit by doing rigorous training daily so that his family could live a pain-free life on Earth after saving for so long. This challenged him in school, leading to poor grades. This wasn't due to lack of effort but simply the lack of opportunity of having been born on the planet. His life was consumed with fitness. But he would say himself that it was well worth it. When he turned 18 his best option was military service - and so he chose it. Now while fitness was the chagrin of many he excelled, and now he had the time to focus on his education. Eventually he made officer school with excellent grades which he passed with ease. He served several tours on Mars leading Riot Platoons curbing Martian rebels before his offer from the Department of Military Operations came in describing an opportunity that to many was only a pipe dream. Military service on an Extrasolar Detachment which would set a family up comfortably for life.
Reason for Induction: Lucas served with Extrasolar Detachment Beta which was deployed to the terrestrial planet Edenia. Oxygen concentrations in the air are 7% higher than that on Earth, so the planet is choked with vegetation and alien life. The same life was dominated by eusocial species including one with a queen containing roughly human levels of intelligence. Through countless deaths of her children she was able, through trial and error, determine away in which to eliminate the colonists of Edenia who regularly claimed land for expansion. ESDB was sent after a transmission was received documenting indoor combat between members of the hive and armed colonists. The mission lasted eight years in which time 54% of ESDB personnel were lost. Lucas became ranking officer after the death of their DC, DE and Strike Team Lead, at the time he was Support Team Lead. ESDB was able to enter the hive and systematically work their way into the central area where the queen stayed. Lucas leaped on a grenade which a soldier had dropped - intending to throw it at the queen's nest. This soldier's incompetence lead to unnecessary casualties, even though the queen was eventually subdued. Although only one time service is mandatory, Lucas's sense of duty demanded he serve another tour. This lead him here, promoted to DC, ready to command Extrasolar Detachment Echo in their mission to identify what exactly happened on Veios.
Personal Effects (optional): A photo of himself, his wife Joanna, two kids (Ashton and Thomas) and his dog Rosa.
