I can't imagine this is a very big thing anymore. There are easier targets on the European coast.

Also, what do you mean the "captive slaves" in Scandinavia? All permanent residents have the same privileges of citizenship as any other permanent resident in Scandinavia, which is a lot more than anyone in our autocratic neighbours! :p

De jure the Commonwealth has no slavery or any system of indentured servitude, and the more years go by the more factually true this is as well.

I know i've only mentioned them in IC like once before, but that isn't their schtick. I've actually put in an appearance for one of the cults in me and G's current collab post. The virtue cult's don't preach genocide. Genocide is strictly a policy of the Icedonian army, as a means of strategic control.

The virtue cults have nothing to do with genocide, or even the Service for that matter. Issac didn't make the cults, he's never even acknowledged them. They were the resulting fusion between the native's affinity for shamanistic ancestor worship, and the Service's virtue ethics. The only purpose of the virtue cults is to venerate/idolize/deify the person's who came before you in what ever it is you're endeavoring towards. In the Army, soldiers have the Cult of Fifteen: the fifteen Ablan soldiers who died in the war of the west, that wound up creating the Serivce. Soldiers ask them for favor and stuff, so that they can be better soldiers. Accant's have their own cult, were they ask remarkable accants of the past for favor so that they might be as impressive as they had been. Eventually, these cults are going to spread to workplaces, farms, and even family significant clans. It's just really advanced ancestor worship, it has nothing to do with the actual apparatus of the Service itself, and is not unique to the Icedonians ( a few admirers in Hibernia as I recall ).

All I'm seeing is a lot of propaganda. The Commonwealth is actively abducting people and tossing them into villages with no means of leaving. Icedonia's virtue cult is literally developing around state institutions. Back it up :P

Just for now - but eventually it will start branching out to non-service institutions. I'm cool with it just being this world's version of shinto

You are correct about the mythology. That does not appear until around 800 b.c. I replaced it with the idea that they are not acting like a sea god, a help to the sailor and a blessing to the ship.

Barrel bombs you say? Something like this perhaps? Could throw in some glass shards for shrapnel.

Something like participating in drowning people then make your recruits do the same. Classic conditioning to create loyal soldiers who can go nowhere else.

As far as sulfur, there is a lot of it in Greece. There are many volcanic islands with sulfur deposits. Melos is in the Cyclades-- it has sulfur, alum, and obsidian as well as a variety of minerals.

Nitre can be made from piss or excrement. It would take some time to get it up to industrial quantities though. I could see a few barrel bombs being there.

The Greek Mythology might not, but the attacking a deity would be considered sacrilege.

Yes but is that sulfur easily accessible?

That's already how I gather saltpeter for the record. And no, it is not efficient at all. It takes several months, and setting up the beds is not nearly as simple as you make it sound. Getting a barrels worth without infrastructure is incredibly difficult/time consuming.

Do you use the French method for making saltpeter? I'm going to collect bat guano instead, it takes only a day of filtering and harvesting. Sure, you only got a hundred pounds of the stuff out of twelve barrels, but you could make a lot of fire arrows from that, or a couple of fire lances.

I just read your first post. A few things come to mind.

1. There is no way that your guy would know this place is either Naxos or the cyclades. The first being, Naxos is the anglicized word for " Zeus's cave ". A god who doesn't exist yet, in a language that doesn't yet exist yet either. You're character should have no idea where he is.

2. You don't have supernatural regeneration. No super endurance, or quick healing. When we say you regenerate over time, that means like, if you get a limp, it will heal after a couple of years. You have a very normal physique otherwise.

3. You washing ashore and waking up after a near drowning isn't impossible, in fact it's quite common, and would definitely be known to a people who make a living off of fishing.

4. There is no way you could know that either you or Victor Spear are immortals. You don't even know if you've traveled back in time.

5. These people are ignorant, not stupid. They would not just declare you a god unless something extremely out of the ordinary were to have happened. You washing onto a beach and starting to preach about unknown gods wouldn't sway anyone, it would just convince them that you'd swallowed too much sea water. Lunatics are pretty common place in this world, and no one is going to humor a sea-drunk hobo.

6. You went from just your average 18 year old, to a murderous cult leader for fun in less than 10 minutes. That's... a radical turn. I could see it if you some how took brain damage from your near drowning, but that would drastically change how you think and interact with the world.

I'm going to read your second post here in a second.

1. Atlas reader here, what words should I use rather than the usual? Should I do "He said something unfamiliar". And would maps of the island look strange and unfamiliar?
2. Ah, should've drowned then.
3. Even without CPR and a severe case?
4. Didn't say anything about immortals, only knew that Victor Spear isn't a name that belongs in this time and so I used it to bullshit my way into another explanation. And uhh, how would that be, I wonder?
5. See point number 2, and as this is Deios before the Greek Gods became popular, I'm pretty sure there are only a few people living there and the probability of people knowing CPR on the island must be small as a result.
6. And yeah it's definitely the drowning, not much of a cultist back then, only reading about Lovecraft's works and noting bits and pieces in them. This drowning definitely pushed said things to the forefront in a poor way.

Alas, folks, this is it. This is the end of the cultist man. Although, I am willing to erase everything for a fresh slate if need be.

Make up a name preferably. Yes, people have been known to naturally cough up sea water on their own before. You don't have to erase everything, just think of a better more realistic explanation.

Also, if you could, try and write how your character's perception of the world has changed - on account of his brain damage.

I'm glad that we've come to this favorable conclusion. And uhh, I intend on doing something subtle with the character.

Don't expect much sympathy, probably gonna fuck off to the Philippines or somewhere warm and island after his cult stunt, if he ever finds it in his wandering that is.

Alas, I can’t say the same. My own school term has been going to hell in a handbasket real quick, which is one of the reasons why I’ve been so cranky these past few weeks.

So if the squid cult people have gunpowder knowledge, how much would it cost for that said knowledge to be in the hands of Sumer?

I'm going to put some heavy doubt on you extracting that secret from the madcap scion of the Cyclades... but yknow, a secret mission to ally with them against Oak would be pretty funny.

Ehh, if I can do that then Oak learns gunpowder and then Sumer gets gunpowder. So all is right in the world. :p

I still very much doubt the squid cult can make gunpowder in any significant capacity. Seizing a few islands means nothing without years of industrialization and development. I doubt anyone would even realize they have gunpowder once they get it, as it'd really just be a novelty.

Eh. Functionally, between the sulfur mining, charcoal burning, and the niter extraction process, I’m guessing that it will be easier for the Imperium just to go around most obstacles in that regard, rather than investing the labor cost involved in blasting routes through inhospitable terrain. Mainly, that’s because of switching costs - producing more treated wood and mild steel for rail isn’t hard at all, whereas scaling up the existing research-level industries for sulfur and niter will take much more effort.

I’m taking a different route for explosives, one more commensurate with the Imperium’s existing expertise, resources, and industries.
