Sarawak

Internal Affairs

With the Second World War over, the people of Sarawak had been fooled into a false sense of security. Before they had even finished rebuilding, Southeast Asia had erupted into anti-colonial revolution. The British had been wise enough to abandon most of their Asian colonies before they retook the home isles, but the other Europeans hadn’t caught on. The Dutch suffered a loss of their largest colony, while the French were fighting an anti-communist independence group in Indochina. Most of the public supported these independence movements, and while the government had remained neutral, that wasn’t an issue.

A week ago, a paramilitary group patrolling Bintulu’s coast noticed a large group of makeshift boats approaching the shore. After contacting the local authorities, they were given the go-ahead to investigate once they landed. Though initially thought to perhaps be fisherman, the forces noticed that the boats were loaded with people with hardly any equipment or other supplies. When asked what they were doing, the people replied in Vietnamese. Luckily, a few of the Vietnamese knew French, and a multilingual European administrator was able to communicate with them. They explained that they were refugees fleeing the violence in Indochina, and hearing this, the authorities provided them with food and water.

This quickly became a hot issue for Sarawakian politicians. Though only a hundred or so had landed so far, newspapers talked about a massive refugee crisis with “hundreds of thousands” of refugees flooding Sarawak. It was true that the destabilization of Southeast Asia was going to cause a migrant crisis, but many politicians were quick to place doubt on more outrageous numbers. Both sides had agreed to provide aid to the refugees, but differed on what to do about them. Conservatives wanted to return them back to Indochina, while liberals generally supported allowing them to stay in Sarawak. After much debate, they compromised and agreed to allow in a limited amount of people while having an assimilationist policy towards them.

Foreign Affairs

To the Governments of France and China,

Greetings! It is unfortunate that I should have to message you under such circumstances, but I must express disapproval for your conduct in Indochina. I do agree that the region should be split into one or more independent countries based on the principles of self-determination established by the UN, the only true equality an oppressed people can have is independence. With that in mind, I fear that China cares more about fighting communism than helping the people living under it. Sarawak supports China in its anti-colonialist endeavors, but hopes to find a solution with minimum bloodshed.

With this in mind, I would like to propose the creation of safe-zones in selected regions to minimize casualties and create a safe haven for internally displaced peoples. They would be monitored either by a UN task force or a third party or equally by both sides. This would not be a ceasefire across the entire front, but rather, several demilitarized pockets to be left untouched. I regret that you can not come to a peaceful agreement, and hope the best for France, China, and the people of Indochina.

With hope for the future, Prime Minister Abang Langkau

To the United Kingdom,

Your Majesty, it is good to speak with you. I am glad I was able to send this letter to London rather than your former capital in exile. All of that aside, while we have become independent of the Empire, we do not wish to fully abandon it. Our past is with the British, and so will our future be. With that in mind, we would like to propose several deals in regards to your territories of Hong Kong and Singapore. We would like to create mutual consulates in these cities, while allowing them to create consulates in our capital of Kuching. This would help us better communicate with the local governments, and likewise, them with ours.

On another note, we also like to propose a series of deals to build up on the economic relationship between these cities and Sarawak. We would like to negotiate for a free trade zone consisting of Sarawak, Hong Kong, and Singapore while also loosening restrictions on freedom of movement. Historically, trade and movement of peoples have been common, but bureaucracy has held us back a great deal. I don’t want to give you the impression that we are trying to shift these colonies away from you, or that we are trying to integrate ourselves back into the empire. Rather, I merely want to build up on historical relations in the context of a fully independent Sarawak to benefit all parties involved.

Wishing you good luck in rebuilding your homeland, Prime Minister Abang Langkau

American Pere Housh wrote:"The Soviets know the United States would retaliate with nuclear weapons if they attack us with nuke. All France has to do is grant Indochina its independence and all will be fine plus I don't think anybody is ready for a 3rd World War this soon or ever. "Perhaps next time we meet, I will bring Chinese tea." Chiang announces out loud.

"That would be splendid." Howe said of the tea. "But now, you must know that you cannot always rely on the idea of mutually assured destruction to deliver us from damnation. Just as we have our lines set that we will not allow the Reds to cross, they have their own. Mongolia, for example, has been in the Soviet sphere since the Russian Civil War, over twenty years. You don't just meddle with something like that without expecting retaliation. To reverse this would do no good now, of course, so I'm asking you take a more subdued approach to your anti-communist foreign policy for now. President Truman and myself are both of the mindset that the communist system is too weak, too inherently flawed to survive. All the forces of capitalism and order must do is starve them out. Sustained economic warfare shall be what wins the day, not bombs or rifles. Am I understood?"

Letter of His Majesty's Office

Dear friend, I have read your letter and thank you for your well wishes and your commitment to the future of the Empire. I believe that in the days and years to come Sarawak will soon have an important role to play in the affairs of both Britain and the world. I will see to it that your request for consulates in the territories of Hong Kong and Singapore is carried out and likewise for free trade zones. Integration of Sarawak into the empire is something that, contrary to what you seem to expect, would be preferred by myself and my subordinates, and I believe that greater economic freedom within the Empire's remaining Southeast Asian possessions is something that would facilitate greater cooperation .

I understand, from the reports I have received, that your country is facing a refugee crisis from the ongoing Indochinese conflict. I wish to offer support from the Colonial Office in the form of fifty million pounds sterling and a battalion of the Royal Engineers to aid in construction of camps and other infrastructure for refugees. If there are issues with assimilation of these refugees, something conservatives are concerned about, so I hear, then a program can be facilitated by which some are expatriated to Britain to assist in public works and reconstruction projects.

I also have a special offer for your government, attached below.

[After reading, please detach and securely dispose of the section of this letter below the marked line]

The Indochinese conflict has been of great interest to Imperial strategic planners, who have selected it as the ideal location for a test of a new method of counter-communist espionage. It is believed that out of the refugees bound for Sarawak, several will inevitably have been members or sympathizers of nationalist rebel groups such as the Viet Minh. Our intent is to arm and train a unit of these exiles to return to Indochina, and from there further impede the ability of the Communist Bloc to maintain control over the region. On July 2, 1950, confirmed Viet Minh leader Mr. Ho Chi Minh was extracted by a unit of the Royal Commandoes 3rd Brigade from Nha Trang in a level 2 classified operation. He is currently on board the CV HMS Sovereign in the South China Sea. With your agreement he would be transported to Sarawak to help oversee the training of this brigade of Indochinese exiles, codename Operation 39, along with advisers from RC 3rd Brigade and arms and munitions from Army stockpiles as is deemed sufficient. Ideal training time for the unit before deployment is 6 months. God Save the King.

Soviet Union

Stalin had a lot on his mind following the MGB's report of the Chinese coup in Mongolia. The relationship between the Chinese and Soviets had been rough, to say the least, but Stalin never expected a coup would take place. And immediately following the capitalist take over of Mongolia, India requested all communist nations sign a non-aggression pact. But seeing how events unfolded in Mongolia, Stalin felt a formal alliance between all communists should be signed in order to protect their sovereignty and deter Western interference, while also strengthening the relations each nation had. The Communist Congress would begin soon, and Stalin ordered Chairman Shvernik to attend the United Nations in New York.

Moscow has what is colloquially referred to as the "Seven Sisters", a group of seven skyscrapers that were under heavy construction in the post-war era. The Communist Congress is taking place in the Kudrinskaya Square Building. Stalin ordered the MGB (now in the process of being reconstructed into the Committee for State Security/KGB) to implement a strict curfew on Moscow Citizens and scan every single person entering or leaving the area. The bomb in Berlin put Stalin on edge with the Communist Congress meeting today. The MGB surrounded him as he left the Kremlin and entered the Kudrinskaya Square Building (or KSB). He saw the other leaders and greeted them. Stalin also saw Secretary Okubo from Japan and shook his hand. "Greetings Comrade. I thank you for coming here to Moscow today."

As Chairman Shvernik walked up the stairs of the jet that would take them to New York, he spoke to a deputy that accompanied him. Both entered the plane as the door closed behind them. Shvernik sat down and turned to the deputy. "The General Secretary has been even more paranoid than usual lately, hasn't he?"

The deputy, now free from the watchful eye of Stalin, felt safe to discuss their leader. "Yes he has. But can you blame him? With the bombing in Berlin and the coup in Mongolia, he now has ample reason to fear some sort of attack on his life."

The jet took off from the runway and was now flying towards New York City. While watching the jet ascend to cruising attitudes, the Chairman countered his deputy's hypothesis. "With the way he controls the government, there would be no way anyone would let an unidentified 'refugee' near him. Had that attack happened here in Moscow, you can bet we'd all be dead."

"Yes, that is true." The deputy replied with an uneasy laugh.

"Never mind that. We should focus on our statements we'll be making to the United Nations. You know they support those Nazis in Germany. Anything we have to say against them will be met with a veto. We'll have to take a careful approach to get results that appease the General Secretary."

"Right. I believe we should first begin with the border issues. We do have satellite states, but the Premier also seeks a buffer state between us. The Byelorussian, Ukranian, and Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republics apparently aren't enough. He wants to see how much we can press them, especially seeing how they act in Mongolia and Indochina. Czechoslovakia was annexed through some rather...nefarious means, and at least half of Poland should be ours. There is no reason to allow the Germans to maintain their territories as if the war never happened. We had to split Korea with the United States, so I don't know why this couldn't happen with Germany."

The plane continued flying for a few more hours as the two men discussed their plan. They landed in an airport in New York City and quickly exited. The Chairman and deputy arrived at the United Nations building, prepared to make a case for the Soviet Union.

To: Maurice Thorez of France
From: Primier Joseph Stalin

Greetings,

I am personally writing to you to inform you that the Soviet Union will support you and the other communist nations through political, military, or industrial aid. The growing conflict in Korea, the coup in Mongolia, the West's attempt to frame us for the bombing at the Reichstag, and now the rebellions in Indochina have not gone unnoticed. The Soviet Union will provide France with the research and scientists necessary to build a nuclear weapon to defend against the capitalists. However, as you are well aware of, attaining such weapons will take years of research. And with the damage caused by the Second World War in France, I fear it will take even longer. We will assist you in this endeavor, but please note that we follow a policy of deterrence and self-defense. Nuclear weapons will only be used as a last resort, but I know this won't be an issue for you, Comrade Thorez. And one last thing: We may have to reach a compromise with the west on Indochina, since the situations in Korea and Germany are now becoming tense.

Signed,
General Secretary and Premier Joseph Stalin of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.

Izvestia, Official USSR Newspaper

Issue 6543, 1950

The terrorist attack in the Reichstag was not ordered or supported by the Soviet Union. Although the USSR's relations with the Third Reich have not been amicable following the end of the Second World War, we have not sent a "scientist" to infiltrate the Reichstag and attempt an assassination on the German leader. The Soviet Union has requested a United Nations Security Council meeting to discuss the antagonism both our nations feel towards one another. Sending a suicide bomber would not do us any good besides further antagonizing the West. We condemn the attack, as unnecessary losses of human lives is something any nation can agree is tragic. The USSR will cooperate fully with any investigations the United Nations decides is imperative to bringing justice. May peace be upon us.

The USSR has received reports from reliable sources that the capitalist coup in Mongolia and the rebellions in Indochina have been supported by the Republic of China. It is now our intention of seeking a formal declaration from the United Nations condemning the coup, as we believe this violates Chapter VII of the United Nation's charter. In order to protect our fellow communist nations from capitalist attacks, we announce to the world that we will be forming a treaty that acts in the same way NATO does. We ask all communist nations to sign this agreement at the upcoming Communist Congress that is currently being held in Moscow, the capital city of the Soviet Union.

Maurice Thorez, Marseille, France.

Here's the compromise we shall accept :

- Territories in Vietnam above the Red River (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_River_(Asia)) will be annexed by the Republic Of China.
- Hanoi will be divided in Southern Hanoi (French) and Northern Hanoi (Chinese).
- Laos will become a neutral, independant state.
- Cambodge will become a communist, independant state.
- France keeps Southern Vietnam and Cochinchina (actual south of Vietnam).
- China will pay for reparations in the whole zone.
- China, France, Cambodge and Laos shall not go at war with each other in the next 5 years.
- China and France won't fund any revolt or coup in Laos and Cambodge.

If it's accepted, we will remove our troops from Chinese new land.
If it's refused, we will keep on fighting harder.

Warren Austin, the U.S ambassador to the U.N, walks into U.N and sits down, waiting for the other ambassadors to walk in, and to try and calm the situation in Korea and Germany. A man walks next to him, and whispers in his ear.

"Try not to make any mistakes here. The Reds can not deter our interference in Europe and Korea."

Warren nods with a look of anxiety on his face.

Qingdao Airbase, Republic of China

Image

A black Imperial Motors car screeches to a halt in the airbase parking lot and a man wearing the uniform of an RAF pilot jumps out. The British and Chinese flags both hang from a pole over his head, blowing in the wind. He hurries inside, saluting the guards, and rushes out to the tarmac, where a flight of Avro Britannia bombers was spinning up for taking off. The Avro Britannia was a licensed copy of the American B-36 Peacemaker, the largest combat aircraft ever designed, made with imperial parts, armaments, and specifications. 15 total were being readied to go, and the man ran to one of them. The crew was out by the side, awaiting clearance to start up, and they all turned their attention to him. "Well Christ, Gordon, we were about to call up a replacement for you. Where the bloody hell have you been?" One of them asked

"No time to explain that, sorry Locke." Gordon answered, his uniform reeking of cheap alcohol and Qingdao bars.

"The Major'll have your arse on a platter, don't let this happen again. You're in the co-pilot's seat for today. Now, headsets on everyone, let's get going." Locke ordered. Each man of the 15 strong crew donned a wireless headset from a cart next to the aircraft, both for communication and to cancel the noise of the engine.

The pilot, copilot, radar officer, and flight engineer set themselves down in their designated seats in the cockpit looking out at the tarmac, where the flight lead was already taxiing to the runway. "This is Captain Locke, radio check." Each of the crewmen called out check to confirm and Locke continued. "Right. Gordon, I'll let you run through the pre-flight with Smith over there. You were at the briefing last night so you already know what this is. We're not flying with any munitions today, this is just a show of force along the 38th parallel in Korea, a quick flyby to make the Reds think twice before they bugger with the South Koreans. We'll be joined 20 miles out from Korea by Royal Navy Sabres from the HMS Sovereign and King Edward. Now get to it."

Gordon turned around in his chair and went through the checklist with Smith, the flight engineer.

"Checklist completed, waiting on your go sir." Smith said in his thick Estuary accent.

"Roger. Go and report, captain." Gordon ordered Locke

"Ground, this is Arrow Seven. Requesting startup engines 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6." Locke got a response back from the ground crew and said "We're good to go."

Locke powered up the piston-jet engines. One by one, they spun to life and their roar drowned out any normal conversation. The plane taxied to the runways in formation with the others, taking off seventh, and the engines sped up to lift the aircraft off the runway into the morning sky. The flight across the Yellow Sea was uneventful, as there was little room for conversation so all Gordon could do was look down at the ocean below. Eventually they came by the Pacific fleet, a collection of ships which from 45,000 feet up looked like specks. The bombers dropped their altitude down to 40,000 to accommodate their escort: A wing of Canadair Sabre jet fighters, coming up from the fleet aircraft carriers. They entered the formation of bombers, going between them at the same speed. Eventually they came upon the Korean coast, and the miles of rural land below. "All callsigns, this is Arrow One. Reminder to not cross over the DMZ. I understand that the intent of this mission is to piss off the commies but we don't want to give them an actual reason to shoot us down. Roger?"

"Roger" aircraft pilots and captains called back in unison.

They were over the town of Yeoncheon, only a few miles away from the border, when radar officer Smith's screen began to light up. "Captain, be advised, I have multiple contacts on radar inbound from the North. Looks like Type 14 Fagots."

Captain Locke cursed under his breath and heard from the wing commander. "Attention all pilots, we have confirmed Korean People's Air Force interceptors inbound, we're contacting command on how to best deal with the situation. Stay in formation."

Gordon looked out the left side of the plane through the steadily vibrating glass. No communist jets in sight, but he knew they would be very soon. A minute later he and Captain Locke heard the engines of their fighter jets rev up as they shuffled out of formation, banking North, and he heard the commander's voice crackling through his headset.

"All callsigns, efforts to turn back North Korean bogeys have failed and they have crossed the 38th parallel. This is to be considered a combat situation from here on out. Guns are free and remain in formation. God save the King and us all."

"Contacts are two miles out and closing, looks like they've engaged our escort but most are still heading for us." Smith called out.

"Roger, Smith. All gunners, check." Each of the six who operated guns by remote answered Locke's call one by one and he said "Gunners ready, engage when in range."

"Shite. Captain, we've got another wing of Migs coming in, ten degrees east! I count 10."

Gordon could not see the first of the North Korean interceptors as they came up from behind them, but he could hear the banging away of the aircraft's 20mm guns, feel the great shaking of the fuselage as rounds from the MiGs' guns struck them, and then he saw them come into view from the cockpit as they flew up above the formation and two of them fell downwards with trails of smoke and fire. The forward gunners nabbed another few out of the air and one of their own Canadair Sabres flew up past them, chasing one of the interceptors. They had little time to react, for the other wing came up in front of them. 3 MiGs targeted them, streaking their fire from the wing up to the cockpit. Engines two and three caught fire and blew out. A lucky shot hit just the right spot on the cockpit's front window, breaking the pressurization and sending glass shrapnel into the chest of Captain Locke. He screamed out in pain and keeled over in his set, shoving the plane out of formation and plummeting into the ground as any loose small objects were thrown out of the plane by the sudden depressurization. Gordon thought fast and quickly took control of the plane but found that the controls of the left wing were busted. He jerked the yoke towards him several times in frustration as the plane refused to level out and the altimeter began to spin downwards. The flight engineer was busy activating the engine extinguishers for the fires and Radar Officer Smith panicked, shouting curses at the sight of the captain nearly dead. "Get ahold of yourself, man!" Gordon ordered him. "Flight lead this is Arrow 7, our captain is incapacitated and I'm losing altitude fast, I don't have control of the bird. Requesting permission to abort!"

To his relief, the voice of the flight commander came through "I copy, Arrow 7. Bogies have been repulsed across the 38th and we're returning to base. There are no friendly airbases within 50 kilometers of here, you'll have to set her down in a field and hope the South Koreans can send someone to get you."

"Roger that flight lead. God save the king, 7 out."

"God save him, lead out."

Gordon, thinking fast, ordered the flight engineer to drop their fuel to lower their weight, and used what remained of the bomber's control surfaces to level the aircraft out into a more stable dive. He then turned on everything that might give them a bit more drag: Flaps, airbrakes, even the landing gear. It still didn't work, and they were still coming in too fast for a landing. As he leveled out he looked over at Locke to see if he could still be given aid, but he was slumped back in his chair with a look in his eyes that told Gordon he was dead. In front of him was a large farmers' field - good for landing, but they were still going in too fast to make the landing. 200 miles per hour, steadily dropping. Gordon realized there would be no 'soft' landing, if they wanted to come to a stop before hitting the treeline. He had to keep mind of the left wing too, which was still nightmarishly difficult to control with only one half of the plane still working. If he let it strike the ground before the fuselage, they'd go into a roll and most likely end up same as the captain. He made one final announcement to the crew. "Brace for hard landing and say your prayers if you've got them, we've got about 20 seconds!" The field came closer and closer now, and he could see clearly the individual farmers on the ground pointing up at the massive plane in wonder. When the ground was only 80 feet below him, Gordon jerked the nose down hard, and the plane went into the dirt. It bounced up once as the engines sputtered out and skidded along the ground, still heading fast, and debris coming in through the front of the aircraft. He could barely make out the treeline up ahead from all the dust being thrown up and could see they were coming up on it fast. The plane gradually slowed and halted only a few feet away from the first tree. The other men in the cockpit were injured badly, and Gordon loosened his seatbelt to get up and aid them. He had a funny feeling in his ankle, like it wasn't attached to the foot right, and his legs gave out wobbling as he collapsed to the ground in time to see South Korean army vehicles driving to the plane outside. He wondered how he was still alive, and collapsed into unconsciousness.

The Chinese government condemns the DPKR's blatant attack on one of its allies. 750000 troops that are already on the North Korean border will get an additional 250000 troops bringing the total to a million troops. China also slaps economic sanctions on the DPRK for the attack. DPRK is warned that another attack on its allies or itself will constitute as an act of war.

"Yes,its about Korea and no, war hasn't broke out yet. Though I don't know how the British will respond to having one of their bombers shot down by North Korean Mig-15s. The bomber was in South Korean airspace with permission from the South Korean government. We have put sanctions on them and one warning that if they attack us or any of our allies, it will be considered an act of war by the Republic of China." Chiang says over the phone

Nehru had landed in Moscow. He was received by the Soviet officers. When Nehru reached the runway, the Soviet and Indian Anthems were sung. A convoy arrived to take the PM to Novo-Ogaryovo.

"If I know the Brits, war is likely. Innocent lives were lost, and I fear more will be." Truman said, awaiting his response.

"I guess I better get my country ready for war. I hope those idiot Russians and Indians don't get involved though the Indians will have a tough time getting through the Himalayas. Its good talking to you my friend. I wish it were under better circumstances Goodbye dear sir." Chiang hangs up the phone before rubbing his temples. He sends orders to his generals to raise the Chinese military's alert status from low to high. Chinese military units all across started preparing for war with North Korea.

Truman hangs up the phone and rubs his eyes. He calls in Eisenhower.

"Eisenhower, send 3,000 troops to Manchuria."

"May I ask why, sir?"

"War never stops... Not even for the weak."

The Soviet Union sends out an emergency message to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. In it, it urges the officials to be rational in their decisions.

Statement to North Korea: We have heard that the British flew a plane on the southern side of the 38th parallel, and North Korean fighter jets crossed the parallel into South Korea. We highly suggest that such missions now will be done with the company of Soviet jets. We will establish a direct hotline that will be available 24/7 to determine if the threat is high enough to justify an attack. If we cannot respond quick enough, please remember that the Japanese are always there.

Heinz's anger was clear as his face went red, the attackers identity was still in the air, the Gestapo and SS were combing the region for leads but it looked like they were getting nowhere. He was being escorted by tanks or soldiers everywhere he would go and it only infuriated him even more. Now the USSR was making claims in lands of his Reich and was conversing with the UN about it, he wondered whether it would have been easier to have just fought until the allies reached Berlin so they could have their slice of the cake. However this wasn't the Second World War and he couldn't allow his people to doubt him, so he made an announcement via radio.

"The greedy communists, although claiming they had not staged the attack on our glorious furher, are taking action on the rightful occupancy of Poland and chezchlovakia. They are coaxing the western 'powers' into stealing the land that we gained truthfully. We declare that if the communists try to remove us from our land that we will retaliate with military means. Thank you and rest easy as we will not lose a second time to such vile and uncultured people."

It was a big risk but Guderian was ready to take it for the sovereignty of his people and country.

Troops have been mobilised to the Reichs east border.

The Republic of China condemns the Soviet Union for trying to claim what is rightfully German land. Any vote in the Security Council that tries to take that will be vetoed by our Ambassador. German government has the backing of China in this matter.
