Brief Description of your Economy: Industrialization is underway in major cities like Athens, Thessalonika and Constatninople; and commerce is dominated by Russian, Austrian, French and British merchants and entrepreneurs. The countryside is still very agrarian, and dominated by large landowners, but the people are not serfs. The Imperial Capital at Constantinople is still under heavy reconstruction, and the Imperial Army is occupying and attempting to subdue the nationalist rebels in Bulgaria.
Goals: WIP
History: The Greek War of Independence is helped along by a certain British Admiral, Sir Arthur Grey; a well-known Philhellene. After helping the Greeks push the Turks out as far as Thrace, he was crowned King Artorios I of the Hellenes, in 1825 AD. He invited in merchants and bankers from England to invest in his new capital poor kingdom. He used the money to build up the Royal Army and Navy of Greece, and proceeded to conquer into Thrace, Makedonia and even Bulgaria. He established his Royal Court at Thessaloniki (because he was a Classicist and was obsessed with Alexander the Great); it was a rather extravagant building, built in a Classical Style; and was so elaborate and expensive, journalists came to call it the "Versailles of the East". In 1829, he invited the British to place a garrison of 3,000 troops, in Thessaloniki to help guard his capital. In the 1830s and early 1840s, the King boasted in his Military Successes and grandiose Neo-Classical construction projects - to make Greece like it was in ancient times. However, King Artorios cared nothing for the nation's Orthodox Christian Religion; in fact, he ordered the closure of dozens and churches and monasteries. This along with his high taxes and constant military adventuring began to pique his Greek subjects. While the King and his foreign cronies gorged themselves on dainties and expensive champagne; and lounged indolently on divans, frittering their time away in debauchery and drunkenness; the majority of the Greek People languished in poverty and watched their King squeeze them like an orange.

In 1848, King Artorios brought Greece along in the great war against the decrepit Ottoman Empire. This war won the King some popularity. However, in that same year, the 23rd of his reign, King Artorios would push his subjects over the edge, by attempting to close the venerable and ancient monasteries of Mount Athos; who had been criticizing the King's secularist policies, and the debauchery of his Royal Court. Instead of following the Royal Decree and taking the Monks into custody, the Soldiers turned around and, took over Thessaloniki. Aiding the rioting mob to neutralize the British garrison; and seize the weapons in the Armory ("the Greek Vespers"). Then, together, marched on the "Versailles of the East", along with a large mob of enraged peasants and workers. On the very same day that Constantinople fell to the Greek and allied forces; the Royal Court was sacked, and the (by this time) morbidly obese King Artorios was torn to pieces by the angry mob. When news of the King's Overthrow percolated throughout Greece, General Kostantinos Kantakouzenos, the Greek Commander in charge of the Greek forces in Constantinople; proclaimed himself Emperor of the Neo-Byzantine Empire; and was crowned as such by the Patriarch of Constantinople. He was crowned, Kostantinos XII, Emperor of the Greeks and Romans. When the People heard this, they rejoiced, and the unrest quieted down. The Bulgarians, however, wished to use this opportunity to stress their own Independence and National Identity, and so they continued to revolt against the Greek Government. Emperor Kostantinos was quick to investigate the events in Thessaloniki; he returned the surviving British troops (kept prisoner in the White Tower) to Britain, and wrote a long, apologetic letter to the British because of their slain troops.

After concluding an armistice with the Ottomans in 1850, the newly crowned Emperor marched North and successfully reoccupied Bulgaria; forcing the rebels to flee into the Mountains and wage guerrilla warfare. Because of this, the Emperor continued to reign as an Absolute Monarch; and a Secret Police force was established. In 1852, Emperor Kostantinos moved the capital to Constantinople. The new Imperial Capital was greatly damaged and depopulated during the 1848 assault; so the Emperor rebuilt the City in a Byzantine style and repopulated the City with Greeks, as most of the Turkish and Muslim inhabitants fled East. This project is largely ongoing to this day, and employs thousands.

The Emperor continued to reign with an iron fist; nonetheless beloved by his Greek subjects and hated by his Bulgarian and Albanian ones; who languished still under Greek Military Occupation. In 1853 AD, Emperor Kostantinos XII arranged a marriage between one of his sons, Crown-Prince Ioannis (John) and a Romanov Princess. In 1854 AD, he married his daughter, Princess Irene to a Bonaparte to cement good relations with the French; and he married his younger son, Prince Vassilis (Basil) to a Hapsburg Princess. In doing so, he won the recognition of Austria, Russia, France and Britain (begrudgingly).

In 1855 AD, the 70 year old Emperor named John as his Co-Emperor; thus confirming his Succession, and he decreed that upon his death, Prince Vassilis was to be named Co-Emperor with John, so that fratricide between the two brothers might be avoided.

Some of the big ones are the Balkanization of China after the Yuan Dynasty, and the separate states going on their own colonial paths as a sort of mirror to Europe, the defeat of the Ottomans at Varna, which lead to a much diminished Ottoman presence in the area, with Hungary and the Commonwealth rising as ascendant powers in their respective regions, and finally the defeat of Spain in the Atlantic War (Otl Spanish Armada) by joint Anglo-French intervention.

In particular for Hellas though, you got most of your lands following the Great Powers collectively oofing the Ottomans to the shadow realm in 1848, you also at one point were lead by a certain British Admiral turned King, who greatly aided in the identity of the Southern Balkans being "Hellenic" rather than disparate ethnic groupings.

Could this British Admiral-turned-King have been overthrown? When did he reign?

Overthrown is less likely. The idea was that he was a pretty popular figure, he had a decent chunk of war heroics he would have undertaken in a number of theatres. He was also the main thing giving a pan hellenic identity to the lands of Hellas. One thing you could do is have him die without an heir, as that could lead to some succession chaos. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Co ... _Dundonald This is the guy btw

On history, I would be concerned with the overthrow notion, as I rather speculate that Britain would have tried to secure all the straights in the event of the Hellenes suddenly becoming hostile.

Ah...I had him degrade into an obese, kleptocratic tyrant; who is overthrown in 1848. I wrote a whole detailed history. I guess I'll have to change his name from Artorios to Thomas, ah well.

Fine. But maybe the King dies while the People are rioting; from something benign, like a heart attack.

From some previous history that you can choose to embrace or ignore, Cochrane was a pretty popular figure, and was what held the bulgarians and greeks together in common cause against the ottomans. Else you prolly looking at some sort of major revolt by the Bulgarians to get their own state, as he was what glued them together in the early days.

That is exactly what happened, and the Emperor is fighting a guerrilla war against Bulgarian nationalists (who are the guerrillas).

I updated the History; especially that of the "Greek Vespers"...Just curious, what would be Britain's reaction to all the events in Greece? If War is the answer, then perhaps what follows is a Civil War between Andreas Metaxas, and his Republicans; based in Athens vs Emperor Kostantinos XII and his Neo-Byzantine Empire; based in the newly liberated Constantinople and Thrace? Perhaps the British would back the Emperor?

With the might of Britain, and most of the Greek Army, behind Emperor Kostantinos, I doubt the Civil War would be long. A year or two at the most.

I should probably note that no Greeks used the term "Byzantine" to refer to the Eastern Roman Empire, and they simply called it the Roman Empire or "Rhomania." They identified mostly as Romans back then, but this identity changed to more more Greek/Hellene due to the Ottomans claiming to be the successors of Rome and "soiling" the term. The term Byzantine was used by Catholic historians after the empire's fall, and wasn't taken too kindly to by Greeks. "Neo-Byzantine Empire" seems kinda like an odd name to me, as New/Neo has never really been used by the continuation of historical states (Second Republic of Poland, not New Republic of Poland) and Byzantine isn't a Greek term.

I would either just call it the Hellenic Empire, Kingdom of Greece, or call use Rhomania once again. It's up to you, of course, Kian has said he's fine with it so it's not me saying it's against the rules. Just a matter of historical flavor.

It's a nitpick of mine, but again, not a big deal. In the grand scheme of things, the name shouldn't matter that much.

With that said, you could have an Iran/Persia situation, which might be fitting considering the situation between the Eastern Romans/Byzantines and Catholic Europe historically. Perhaps to many foreigners they're called the New/Second/Neo Byzantine Empire, but most citizens refer to it by another name?

With that said, you could have an Iran/Persia situation, which might be fitting considering the situation between the Eastern Romans/Byzantines and Catholic Europe historically. Perhaps to many foreigners they're called the New/Second/Neo Byzantine Empire, but most citizens refer to it by another name?

Could be interesting possibility too.

Brief Explanation of Government: The country is a democracy in which representatives are appointed to run the government within the constraints of the constitution and Catholic Bible. However, the vote is limited to white, Portuguese-speaking Catholics. There is a strong president, who is not limited with a term limit.
Ideology: Christian Democracy

Relations

Iberian Union: Portugal is the “motherland” of the primarily Portuguese settlers in Avisia, and both the Avisian government and people attempt to keep cultural relations tight with the region. However, there is significant discontent with the Iberian Union due to them being viewed as eroding Portuguese culture and language, and more importantly, with them being viewed as traitors for letting the Cape fall to the British. Other than relations between Avisia and some Portuguese cultural, intellectual, and missionary groups in Portugal, the two nations do not have much in the way of relations due to geographic isolation.

The British Empire: The British are the bane of Avisia’s existence, first stealing the Cape away from their motherland and then leading to their expulsion. Most Avisians view the British with great hostility, and most military plans relate to a defensive war against them. However, most politicians are well aware of the unfortunate truth that the British are their lifeline to the outside world. Most capitalists within the nation are supportive of greater trade ties, though they don’t hold much sway in the government as of yet. Avisian policy towards the British is one of pragmatism, in which they accept their situation, but remain overall unfriendly.

African kingdoms, tribes, etc: Avisian policy towards the various entities in Africa is officially one of “civilizing”, with the goal of eradicating tribalism and “uplifting” the natives of the continent. Avisia actively supports Christian missionary work in southern Africa, even going as far to assist the Hansa in Namibia. However, Avisia is friendly towards Christian tribes, even those beyond its borders, and will protect them when possible. Avisia currently has ambitions to enforce treaties onto its African neighbors allowing for more missionary work, along with some desires to expand into Zulu, but is cautious about the latter.

Population Info
Brief Description of your people: The Avisian people are diverse, but the backbone of the nation would certainly be the “true Avisians”, the Europeans. Mostly of Portuguese descent, with a large minority having Iberian and Italian heritage, they cling closely to the Portuguese language and view themselves as a last bastion of the language and culture. While they do view themselves as “superior” to Africans, they are surprisingly well accepting of those who have adopted the Catholic faith and Portuguese tongue. Most coloured, or mixed-race, Avisians fall into this category, and while they can not vote yet, are generally thought of as being “civilized.” Assimilados, assimilated Africans, are granted many rights, but can not vote, and while the government does not officially discriminate or segregate, private groups are allowed to do so. Tribalists are viewed harshly, and do not enjoy many rights to begin with.

Religion: 77% Catholic, 20% Tribal religions, 3% Other
Ethnicity: 36% European, 9% Coloured, 55% Native African (7% Assimilados, 48% Tribal)
Main/Accepted Culture(s): Avisian (Primary), Assimilados (Accepted)

Military Info
Army: 2,000 professional duty soldiers serve on active duty, but the nation can mobilize up to 30,000 in reserves to fight. Most white and coloured men in Avisia carry guns for self-defense, while assimilados may register for a permit to own a gun. Most guns are outdated, but the standing army tries not to lag too far behind.
Navy: N/A

Other Info
Brief Description of your Economy: Avisia is quite poor and rural, having very little industry and no large cities. The economy is primarily based around agriculture and the grazing of cattle, though there is limited mining and the more developed settlements see more non-agriculture commerce.
Goals: Survive as an independent nation, Slowly introduce reforms in regards to immigration and coloured rights, Spread Catholicism across southern Africa, Improve the economy and build more infrastructure to connect the country
History:

Avisian history can be traced back to the Portuguese colonization of the Cape, in order to secure a way to the East Indies. Due to its strategic location and Mediterranean climate, it would attract thousands of European migrants, mostly Portuguese with large amounts of other Iberians and some Italians. Though slavery and oppression of the natives was rampant, a religious and cultural movement spread among the white population. The reform-minded movement focused around the belief that the Portuguese were in Africa to bring civilization to the native populations and “uplift” them. Though slavery would continue for some time, large amounts of missionary work began in the colony, and the quality of life would improve for freedmen.

This continued on for a good while, and many more people would move into the cape as missionaries worked to reduce the amount of enslaved men. However, unfortunate times would fall upon the Portuguese section of the Iberian Union. The British Empire would end up annexing the Cape, and with it, the Portuguese population of the colony. The population was bitter towards the Iberians for failing to protect them, but had fought a few skirmishes to keep the British out. British restrictions placed on their life style and hostility between the Portuguese and British settlers flared tensions, and eventually lead to the Great Trek of the 1830s.

The Great Trek saw thousands of Portuguese settlers, coloured, and even some converted blacks move from the Cape to the interior of southern Africa. The trekkers fought several conflicts to settle in the area north of the Avisian River (irl Orange River), being in a state of messy warfare for years. They would initially be in a struggle for survival, but the development of tactics such as wagon fortifications lead to Portuguese gaining the upper hand. As a united front, the Portuguese pushed their opponents out of their claimed lands, and eventually, they realized they could better coordinate their efforts as a single nation. The Treaty of the Macaco River in 1850 established the Avisian Republic, and the spot of its signing became a settlement and the nation’s capital, Lusitania.

The crippling defeat of the Zulu, and the signing of an official treaty recognizing the Avisian’s gains, helped to solidify the national spirit of the nation. To establish rule of law and bring unity to Avisia, a republican constitution was drafted and approved in 1852. It made Avisia a Christian presidential republic, and allowed for elections every four years to determine the president. The first president was the popular war hero and influential general Adao Leto, who would run the nation for four years. His rule would see a consolidation of the status of Avisia as a Christian state based on preserving and spreading the Portuguese culture and faith, while ensuring that coloureds were granted limited rights. Due to bad health he would not run for reelection, and instead, the liberal Miguel Santos would successfully run for office.

Miguel Santos was a liberal-minded reformist, though conservative by some European standards, he sought to introduce large scale reforms to secure rights for Avisia’s non-whites and ensure the country’s prosperity. His first term in office saw minor reforms and focused on solidifying Avisia’s stability while ensuring his security in office. After winning a second term, however, he has sworn to introduce several reforms, while also stressing his promise to make Avisia a respected, modernized nation. This has proved controversial, but his populist rhetoric, along with his devotion to Catholicism and the mission to civilize, may help to keep him afloat as the country chooses between conservatism and liberalism.

The Empire has established strong trade relations with the Commonwealth, and has even a Mutual Defense Pact with the Commonwealth (pending approval from the Commonwealth player, of course)

British Empire: Following the "Greek Vespers" of 1848, and the overthrow of King Thomas, an ex-Admiral of the British Navy; relations with Britain have been strained.
Goals: WIP
History: The Greek War of Independence is helped along by a certain British Admiral, Thomas Cochrane; a well-known Philhellene. After helping the Greeks push the Turks out as far as Thrace, he was crowned King Thomas I of the Hellenes, in 1825 AD. He invited in merchants and bankers from England to invest in his new capital poor kingdom. He used the money to build up the Royal Army and Navy of Greece, and proceeded to conquer into Thrace, Makedonia and even Bulgaria. This made him incredibly popular, for a time. However, King Thomas cared nothing for the nation's Orthodox Christian Religion; in fact, he ordered the closure of dozens and churches and monasteries.

In 1848, King Thomas brought Greece along in the great war against the decrepit Ottoman Empire. This war won the King some popularity. However, in that same year, the 23rd of his reign, King Thomas would push his subjects over the edge, by attempting to close the venerable and ancient monasteries of Mount Athos, and arrest the Monks there; who had been criticizing the King's secularist policies, and the debauchery of his Royal Court. On the very same day that Constantinople fell to the Greek and allied forces; the Royal Court was sacked. By this point, King Thomas and his Family had already fled South with the Royal Retinue and Treasure; attempting to board a ship at Piraeus, to flee the country. However, when the King and his servants were attacked at the port, by a large mob, the King abandoned his baggage train and guards and lackeys, and fled just himself and his family. Years of gluttony, drunkenness and lack of exercise took its toll on the 73 year old British Admiral-turned King; and due to sudden stresses that befell him, Thomas Cochrane succumbed to a heart attack, as British troops and sailors dragged his corpulent body onto the ship; whilst holding the mob back.

Also, A Hellenic Republic was proclaimed in Athens; led by Andreas Metaxas. Emperor Kostantinos was quick to investigate the events in Thessaloniki; he returned the surviving British troops (kept prisoner in the White Tower) to Britain, and wrote a long, apologetic letter to the British because of their slain troops.

After concluding an armistice with the Ottomans in 1849, the newly crowned Emperor marched North and successfully reoccupied Bulgaria; forcing the rebels to flee into the Mountains and wage guerrilla warfare. In 1850, Emperor Kostantinos besieged Athens; and the Republican forces set up barricades to attempt to deter Imperial troops. But by September, the Battle was over, and Athens was in the Emperor's hands. Metaxas and other Republican leaders fled abroad, to London, as Imperial troops closed in. The Emperor continued to reign as an Absolute Monarch; and a Secret Police force was established;as resistance to Imperial rule has continued in both Bulgaria (with Bulgarian Nationalist Guerrillas) and in Attica and Peloponnese (with Republican Guerillas; called "Metaxists", after the Republican leader, Andreas Metaxas).

Well, Austria doesn't particularly have a lot of interests or a lot of power and influence in the Balkans. Historically, Hungary was the state that dominated the region, and while Hungary is in a pretty weird position right now, so it's influenced has been weakened, Hungary has always stood as a wall between Austria and the Balkans, even if Austria probably sent troops to help Hungary to fight against the Ottomans in past centuries. Right now though, Austria played no sort of role in the collapse and division of the Ottoman Empire other than to express its displeasure at the partition, a partition which weakened the balance of power in the Concert of Europe. But Metternich fell around the time the Ottomans did, so Austria might have acknowledged the new borders of Greece.

I would be more than alright with the idea of Prince Vassilis marrying a Habsburg Princess, but you should know that Austria and France have pretty cold and tense situations, so the marriage might be questionable if Greece tries to get close to France. And what's important for you to know is that Austria has no means of intervening in the Balkans, so friendly relations won't necessarily help you.

Oh, and a small thing - I think that you should read the Commonwealth app first. There is no Russian Commonwealth, it's the Commonwealth of Poland, Lithuania, Kiev, and Muscovy, and the Romanov led Muscovy is just a part of it.

It's more than just an issue of convenience though. Considering that the Commonwealth is on the verge of a civil war, the fact that you'd have someone married to a Romanov would tie you to Muscovy, which is something that you should keep in mind.
