Government Explaination: The Confederacy, in spite of what its name and constitution imply, is a highly centralized and autocratic state. Most de facto power is in the hands of the Executive Branch, through the office of the President. While the President is officially appointed by the legislature for a five-year term, the presence of the Black Legion and the ever-present threat of excommunication means that only total loyalty is permitted. The Legislative Branch, the strongest branch on paper, is effectively a rubber stamp, approving the vision of the President on a day-to-day basis. The Black Legion, the President's private security force and death squad, wields significant power of its own, emulating the Praetorian Guard or the SS.

History: The collapse that had struck the United States of America wasn't a boon for any state, but the Inland Northwest took the fall especially hard.
While states such as Texas and California had the economic strength and population to push forth strong calls for secession, the Inland Northwest had a much smaller population in a weaker economy, and as such their plea for help was not heard as loudly by the federal government. The growing resentment against the federals paved the way for far-right radicals that glorified the Confederate States of America to gain a strong foothold in the region, promising local autonomy and the removal of the "parasites that brought forth this great pox upon our land". Naturally, not everyone bought into their ideals at first, but with incompetence at the federal level and their demands for change ignored by the state governments, enough support was gathered in time that a coherent political organization rose in the Inland Northwest; the White League.
In 2041, the cookie of opportunity was greedily snatched by the White League, who saw their opportunity to proclaim their Confederacy. One not based in the Southeast, but in the Northwest. However, a divide had sprung in the midst of their March on Spokane, as more moderate members sought for a direct democracy in the young Confederacy, while hardliners called for the institution of a segregated democracy. Both of these factions were silenced, however, as Army veteran and radical James Warren "Big Jim" Wilson broke up the infighting by having his unit of former policemen and soldiers execute the leaders of both sides and having the less notable members of the League swear loyalty to him as President. While quiet voices admit that the Confederacy may have been able to coax the coastal region in if not for Wilson's seizure of power, no one dared to say it openly as President Wilson used his hit squad, now known as the Black Legion, to clean up any resistance to his rule as the White League convened to approve a constitution. While the President was willing to go so far as to permit an ostensibly democratic constitution, his omnipresent secret police ensure that his reign continues.
Now, however, the Northern Confederacy is starting to fracture. With the economy starting to fail, questionable loyalties to the state church, and the Black Legion's less scrupulous members plotting to seize power, President Wilson struggles to balance the needs of the people with the desires of an increasingly audacious legislature. The writing is on the wall for Wilson's system, and whether the Northern Confederacy will radicalize, moderate, or cease to exist hangs in the balance of Big Jim's final months in office.
