Legend of the Galactic Heroes: A New Chapter

A Helpful link

Premise

This is an RP based on one of my favourite Anime, the classic Legend of the Galactic Heroes. This scenario will take place nearly a century after the original series, so one doesn’t need to know much if anything about the series to play or enjoy. In it, you take the role of a commander in one of the two opposing militaries who battle for galactic supremacy.

For In every time, in every place, the deeds of men remain the same...

History of the Galaxy

In AD 2801 humanity, who spread throughout the Milky Way and terraformed countless worlds over the past eight centuries, settled their conflicts and formed the Galactic Federation. The Golden Age of Humanity began and this event known as Year 1 of the Galactic Age. Three centuries later, a former admiral and aspiring politician named Rudolf von Goldenbaum became President of the Federation and soon declared himself Emperor Rudolf I of the Galactic Empire. He began a policy of intense persecution of dissidents and soon transformed the state into an absolute monarchy based on the ideals of the Kingdom of Prussia and the German Empire.

In Galactic Age 473/ AD 3273 a group of peasants and dissidents escaped the Goldenbaum Empire and reached the Sagittarius Arm. They found a habitable planet that they named Heinessen after their leader Ahle Heinessen and in GA 527 formed the democratic Free Planets Alliance. In GA 640 the Alliance and the Empire made their first contact; the Empire quickly declared the Alliance a rebel faction and the Alliance-Imperial War began. The conflict soon became the bloodiest in human history and was characterised by countless skirmishes: neither side could gain an advantage and the was became a brutal stalemate.

GA 796, after 150 years of war, Emperor Friedrich IV promoted Reinhard von Lohengramm to Imperial Admiral. He was barely 20 years old and is quickly recognised for his genius. Later that year, he effectively took full control over the Empire when the emperor died and left his five-year-old grandson Erwin Josef II as Emperor. Imperial hardliner rebel but are defeated by Lohengramm and his allies.

Lohengramm restructured the Empire and in GA 799 launched an invasion into the Free Planets Alliance. He successfully defeated and occupied the Alliance, who were suffering the effects of a failed coup earlier that year. The Free Planets become a mere puppet state, ending centuries of democratic rule. Lohengramm's soldiers soon declare him Emperor and with the support of the people and his Admirals, he formed the New Galactic Empire. Emperor Reinhard continued his liberalisation of the Galaxy.

In December of the same year, the planet El Facil declared its independence from the Free Planets Alliance. The Free Planets briefly rebelled but the Second Alliance-Imperial War ended with the complete destruction of the Alliance. The Fortress of Iserlohn, under the control of Admiral Yang Wen-li, declared independence as the Republic of Iserlohn.

In GA 801 the Republic of Iserlohn and the New Galactic Empire signed an agreement: in return for the Fortress of Iserlohn, the Emperor made Heissensen an autonomous zone within the Empire. Soon afterwards, Emperor Reinhard died of a rare congenital disease and left his wife Hildegard as regent for their infant son Alexander Siegfried.

Here is where we leave the realm of history and enter the RP...

Hildegard continued liberalising the Empire and formed a constitutional government with a Diet. GA 818, Alexander Siegfried took full power and continued ruling justly. All seemed well in the galaxy as a new Golden Age flourished. However, an uprising by Admiral Felix Mittermeyer von Reuenthal in 864 shattered the unity of the Empire. The brutal conflict left billions dead and Reuenthal seized the former Free Planets territory for himself. Initially, he promised a return to democracy but soon established a military dictatorship. Billions perish under his purges and he used the strong iron arm of the military to maintain power. In 870 the Empire signed the Treaty of Phezzan and recognised the newly (re)created Free Planets Alliance.

GA 896, President Reuenthal died but soon replaced by one of his subordinates. The Empire, now under the leadership of Emperor Reinhard II, saw an opportunity to seize their lost territory and launched an invasion, violating the Treaty of Phezzan. The war began as a series of border skirmishes but now, ten years on, the stage is set for more destructive conflict. The galaxy, once again at war and in need of new heroes...

The State of the Galaxy

Galactic Map

The major factions are the New Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance. The Domain of Phezzan, once independent, became the seat of the Empire when Emperor Reinhard I moved there in 801. As one of the only corridors between the two states, it is heavily guarded. The Iserlohn Corridor, meanwhile, once again under Alliance hands remains the only other corridor and the formidable Iserlohn Fortress stands in the way of any possible invasions.

The Empire boasts a strong military tradition and thanks to the reforms of its previous two leaders a robust economy and loyal citizenry.

The Free Planets, on the other hand, boasts a far larger population. As a dictatorship, it is also highly militarised, far more than its predecessor was, and anti-Imperial sentiments remain strong. The stage is set for a war with the potential to be far deadlier than any other.

Technology

Despite being a Space Opera, LOGH takes a “hard science fiction” approach. Real physics apply and with the exception of FTL technology is little different than that of today (or the 1980s when it was written).

Warp is the only FTL method known to humans and using high energy reactors, vessels can jump a finite distance crossing dozens or even hundreds of light-years in mere moments. Ships, however, can only warp between navigation corridors (see the map) safely. Vessels can only warp while a certain distance away from intense gravitational wells; this means a fleet cannot warp-out directly on top of a planet or other large body and requires individual ships in a fleet be spaced a certain distance away from each other while executing warp. As such warping within the same star system is near impossible. Space travel therefore still takes time, and it could take many months to traverse the entire inhabited galaxy.

Communication jamming and hacking are commonplace, meaning that written orders are as common as they are now. Often small craft are used to pass orders along.

A Note on Fleets and Ranks

The Navies used by the two opposing factions are vast organisations filled with millions of soldiers and thousands of ships; each force has around 150,000 warships. Below is a list of command ranks:

Captain: In command of an individual warship.

Commodore: The smallest separate command, commodores could command a small squadron of 500 ships as part of a larger Vice Admiral's fleet. They could also serve in staff positions.

Rear Admiral: Rear Admirals command a fleet of 2,000 vessels, or also serve on the Staffs of higher ranked officers. Rear Admirals are the backbone of both the Imperial and Free Planet navies.

Vice Admiral: Command a fleet of 10,000 vessels. In the Empire, fleets commanded by Vice Admirals are identified by the admiral's last name, while in the Free Planets Alliance fleets commanded by Vice Admirals are designated with numbers. Vice Admirals also might serve as Staff Officers.

High Admiral (Empire)/Admiral (Alliance): The highest independent commands, (High) Admirals command fleets of around 30,000 vessels. In the Empire High Admirals command fleets designed by their last names, while in the Alliance they command several numbered fleets. In both cases, they are expected to be the overall theatre or front commanders. They might also act as department heads or as a Chief of Staff.

Fleet Admiral: Largely a ceremonial or bureaucratic role, Fleet Admirals are the highest attainable rank in both navies, usually as the supreme commander of an entire campaign or as a department head.

Rules

  • The OP's word is law. That isn't to say that my mind can't be changed, of course. I'm human and am fallible on occasion
  • Co-OPs are my eyes and ears when I am unavailable. Respect them as you would me.
  • Absolutely no one-liners. One-liners are the death of RPs, and if you can't write AT LEAST three lines, wait until you can do so.
  • No godmodding, metagaming, et cetera. These battles are massive and complicated; millions of men will die in a single battle. No one is omniscient or omnipotent, so expect to take losses. If you can’t decide who wins, I’ll make a call.
  • Have fun!

Name: Reichsgräfin Amelie von Eisenfaust

Age: 28

Gender: Female

Allegiance: The Empire

Appearance:

Bio:

The only daughter to Count Rudolf von Eisenfaust, Amelie spent most of her childhood growing up impoverished. The reforms of Emperors Reinhard I and Alexander Siegfried abolished the privileges the traditional nobility had, and the once prod Eisenfaust family suffered. Matters were made worse when Amelie's father was killed during a Free Planet raid. Swearing vengeance upon the enemy of the Empire, Amelia vowed to become a soldier despite the stigma of female soldiers in the Imperial Navy. Despite, or perhaps because of the persecution she faced, Amelia worked her through the Imperial War College and assigned to the Fischer Fleet, under Vice Admiral Adolf Fischer. She served as Warrant Officer to the Jörmungandr and saw several battles. Her moment to shine came when her commanding officer was wounded in battle and she, as the highest ranking officer left stranding took command of the ship and performed a rear action guard that allowed the rest of the squadron to retreat. She was promoted to Captain and commanded the Angrboda at the age of 23.

Two years later Amelie took part in the 7th Battle of Tiamat and saved the battle by performing a risky wide flanking manoeuvre, crippling the enemy command ship before the Imperial Fleet could be enveloped. In gratitude, the Emperor himself personally commended her and Amelie was promoted to Rear Admiral, the only female officer in the history of the Empire to attain such a rank. However, the prejudices of her colleagues meant she spent the next three years away from the front lines and served as a staff officer.

With the war heating up, however, she has her chance to prove herself once and for all.

Rank: Rear Admiral in the Imperial Navy; Flagship Hel

Skills: Amelie is a brave and component tactician. Her success comes largely from taking bold offensives and exploiting gaps in the enemy line and in conducting flanking manoeuvres. Her bitterness towards her male colleagues and her hatred towards the Alliance has made her resilient and this can be considered a skill.

Personality: Charming, funny, and courteous are some ways people have described Amelie von Eisenfaust Those who have faced her in battle, however, know a different side to her. Von Eisenfaust is vindictive, sadistic, merciless, and above all else, cruel towards her opponents. Her iron will and desire to see the Alliance defeated are a hallmark of her personality, and despite blaming the liberal reforms of the Empire for her poverty, she is a staunch Imperialist, if perhaps nostalgic for the days of old.
Strengths and Weaknesses: Her determination and resilience in the face of battle are Amelie's best strengths, as is her ability to make snap decisions. However, she has a short temper and often acts rashly. Her hatred of the Alliance can also be a hindrance, not to mention the fact that she is a woman playing in a man's world. Her youthful appearance is something that she is frequently criticised for, giving her a small chip on the shoulder.

Likes/dislikes: As a noblewoman, Amelie has a love for the finer things in life, from classical music to high literature and expensive wines. As for dislikes, she cannot abide the failure of her subordinates and her hatred towards her enemies is enduring.

Also, general question, but should I set up a Discord server?

Oooh, glad to see that its back. WIP, will try to finish tonight:

Name: Nidal Bagdash
Age: 32
Gender: Male
Allegiance: Free Planets Alliance
Appearance: Looks suspiciously like his grandfather...
Bio:

Though never an important or wealthy family, the Bagdashs have left their mark on Alliance history in their own way. A Bagdash, Nidal's grandfather, was one of Yang Wen-Li's associates. His father was one of the captains that supported Admiral Felix Reuenthal's insurrection, which re-created the FPA. With these two his heroes as a kid, it was clear that he had big shoes to fill, and the Defence Force was the natural if not only choice for his future. So, out of a mix of patriotism, familial pride, and the excitement of being in the military, he applied to the FPA Officer Academy.

After graduating from the Academy, he was assigned to the military installation on Econia. Among others, this planet now hosted a secretive, unique unit, the Combat Studies Group. Part think-tank, part training ground, and part combat unit, the CSG was devoted to developing unusual tactics and doctrine in the fight against the Empire, and Nidal's high marks and recce specialty had caught the attention of its staff. Despite having been established a year before the Treaty of Baalat, the group was very small and limited to a largely experimental role, the peace of the Treaty making its expansion a low priority. Nevertheless, for the next several years, the Group rotated its small force between Econia and the corridors, providing valuable ISR and deep recce support to the fleets keeping an eye on the Empire. These were "silent" missions, with no glory or fame to them, but they were vital, and many soldiers were richly honored for their actions. Officers (secretly) received ranks and awards like candy, and so Nidal quickly jumped to commander of a recce cruiser, then squadron leader.

When President Reuenthal died, so did the Treaty. The Group was rapidly expanded, and its small core staff found themselves promoted just as quickly. Now with the war ramping up, Nidal found himself a freshly-minted commodore in charge of a full-sized CSG detachment, and about to embark on a truly unique operation. Nobody knows what fate holds in store for either side...but maybe this time, the unsung heroes of the Combat Studies Group could swing the war in their favor.

Rank: Commodore, CO 4th Operational Detachment, Iserlohn Operations Command, CSG. Flagship Myrsky.
Skills: Nidal is skilled in strategy, and in making use of the supporting ("non-kinetic") factors of war - such as logistics and morale. He also has a keen grasp on the technological ability of the forces under his command and making use of it.
Personality: A friendly trickster at heart, Nidal's personality matches his role and the eccentric commanders of the CSG. However, his work has been his life and his life is his work, so he's had a hard time disassociating himself from work and learning to relax.
Strengths and Weaknesses: Nidal's strength lies in strategy and logistics, but as a tactician in a pitched battle he's been mediocre, and has no experience in coordinating large fleets. He's a courageous officer and commander, but with the subconscious desire to be recognized it can turn into recklessness.
Likes/dislikes: Likes: Playing all different types of games, improving his knowledge - in particular in technology, daydreaming, music (specifically classical), and the military.
Dislikes: Imperialism and kingship, flashy heroics, and inelegance.
Frustrated with: Unimaginative officers.

Glad to hear!

You know, I'm not sure, his characterization is something I've been wrestling with a lot. Comparing the two role models of his childhood, Yang is definitely an anarchic idealist, but Captain Baghdash - who I made Nidal's grandfather - seems to me to be the opposite, a pragmatic realist, and for supporting Reuenthal I'd assume his father is the same way. I'm leaning more towards Capt. Baghdash because I'm not really interested in playing a Yang expy, and I think the Captain's (and his father's) mentality would've rubbed off on him way more than century-old tales of a democratic Alliance.

Overall, I think his response to a question would be along the lines of "Not the best, but still better than the alternative." Justification is something I need to think about more though.

Fair enough. One of the best things about LotGH is that the line is often grey, so him being more pragmatic even if disagrees sometimes with his government would make sense

Agreed, LotGH is excellent in that regard, its like watching a historical documentary. Also, the app is now complete - how is it?

I've also updated the map, as the link seemed to have stopped working and updated the cast.

Name: Count Otto von Isenburg
Age: 34
Gender: Male
Allegiance: Empire
Appearance: Weedy looking with a brown hair and a moderate height.
Bio: The powerful Isenburg family has always been one the linchpins of the Empire’s military-industrial machine. From their seat in Altener, the Isenburg’s shipyards have supplied much of the Empire’s capital and support ships in its millennia of war against the Alliance. Although they were one of the primary supporters of the Lippstadt League, the Isenburg family saw which way the wind was blowing and managed to defect early enough to see most of their fortune intact.

Otto is a great admirer of High Admiral Mittermeier who he sees as one of the greatest military geniuses of the age. However, it was not the wars but the disastrous peace that followed the ascension of Kaiser Alexander that hit Isenburgs hard. For as the war ended did so the lucrative government contracts for ships that were the bases of the Isenburg’s wealth.

That was why the Isenburgs secretly bankrolled Admiral Felix and egged him on to revolt against the Kaiser. During the bush wars that followed the stalemate, Otto rose quickly up the ranks from a mix of political nepotism as well as the ability to produce results where few others could. He was promoted to the rank of commodore during the second battle of Dagon where he commanded the Empire’s van and heavily mulled his rebel counterpart’s fleet.

Otto and the rest of his family are a part of the True Bloods faction at Court, a conservative faction opposed to the reforms introduced by the late Dowager Empress. They believe that they are the true inheritors of the High Noble’s legacy and are much stronger than their processors now that the chaff has been weeded out during the Lippstadt war.
Rank: Vice Admiral
Skills: Favors fast decisive fleet engagements and well understands both the strengths of his units and how to utilize them to their greatest effect
Personality: Enjoys wine, women and his privilege as one of the ruling elites of the Empire. During the midst of battle, he gains a crazed look and his eyes become bloodshot to the point where they look more red than white. Coupled with his brutal tactics during the Second Reuenthal Revolt, he was given the moniker the Vampire of Dagon

Strengths and Weaknesses: Strong on the offense and able to exploit an enemy weakness for maximum damage. However, his tactics are highly destructive not only against the enemy but also to his own fleet.
Likes/dislikes: Hates “liberals and upstarts” especially women in high positions in the military who he views as incompetent and only gained their position through the favor of the liberals.

It's fine xD The important thing to note is that Reunthal's Rebellion is almost 40 years in the past and all the original characters are long dead.

Will the OP dictate macro events or will we have a free hand in our posts? All of the characters are vice or rear admirals and they won't be the ones conducting policy decisions.

For now, I'll handle some of the more important macro events, such as who is assigned to which fleets and the general policies of the FPA and the Empire, although as time goes on and (I hope) we get more players and characters become more important my plan is to back off and let the characters dictate more.
