House Targaryen

Aerys Targaryen the Second of his Name,
King of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, and Protector of the Realm

Born in 244AC, within the walls of the Red Keep
Rules from the Iron Throne in the Red Keep, at the heart of Kingslanding

Aerys was born to Jaehaerys and Shaera Targaryen, themselves the children of Aegon the Fifth of his Name. From a young age he never proved himself to be a great man, possessing neither the mind nor the skill to excel as a prince of the royal family. And yet he was gifted with charm, enough to make him a great number of friends on whom his later successes would depend. One such friend was the young Tywin Lannister, the heir to House Lannister of Casterly Rock. The Lion of the West, after the War of the Ninepenny Kings saw the last of the Blackfyre Pretenders slain on the field of battle, was chosen to knight his friend who had earned his spurs at only sixteen. Two years later, this friendship would prove to be a blessing for the once failing Lannisters. Aerys, now dubbed King Aerys II with the death of his father, named Tywin his hand. Together, the two would bring the realm a dozen years of peace and prosperity.

As a teenager, under the watchful gaze of his weak father, the future king was wedded to his younger sister. Even at such an age the two were far from lovers, the marriage made purely out of a child's duty to an ailing father. As the years dragged on, this marriage continued to forebear a great tragedy. After Rhaegar, no more children blessed their house, driving Aerys into paranoia as he laid the blame on his enemies at court.

However it was not just dead children which tore at the sanity of the King. His friend and Hand, Lord Tywin Lannister, proved himself to be an exceedingly competent administrator, governing the realm without fault year after year. And year after year Aerys found himself having his own accomplishments overshadowed by that of the Lion. Slowly, the king began to act on his envy, acting against the wishes of his friend as he tried to grasp at prestige and glory that was being denied him. It was not long until the court learned that their own advancement lay in doing the same, giving Aerys the attention and praise that he had long wished for.

And yet there was a chance of recovery for the king's mind, and that chance was when Jaehaerys was born. A second son to strengthen the name and history of Aerys. And by a uncaring god the babe died. Aerys blamed his wife, her midwife, his mistress, his lover's entire family. Yet it was not enough, not for the King. In a fit of despair he took a walk of repentance, pledging himself to only lay with his wife. And while a son would come, healthy and strong, the damage of Jaehaerys' death could not be repaired.

Aerys, his envy of Tywin driving him to greater feats of humiliation against his former friend, once again refused his Hand's advise when Lord Darklyn refused to pay his taxes. Choosing to deal with the rebel himself, Aerys was captured by Darklyn and held prisoner for six months. Upon his rescue by Ser Barristan Selmy, Aerys had truly broken.

Once he was a handsome and charismatic man, generous and resolute. Now his paranoia led him to see treachery in every act, his envy to consider Tywin and his own son Rhaegar a threat. He refused to leave the Red Keep for four years, letting his hair and nails grow unkempt for fear of a blade. Only the Tourney of Harrenhal, in the Year of the False Spring, roused him from his seat. There, the realm at large was allowed to see the state of their king. Naming Jaime Lannister to his kingsguard at the behest of the youth's twin sister, Aerys deprived his Hand of his heir and saw to it that Tywin gave up his position. Considering himself finally victor over his rival, Aerys returned to the capital, believing the realm to once again be behind him as it was when he was still young.

Alas, with the threat of Lord Tywin neutered, Aerys found himself remembering the danger of his estranged son. Rhaegar, though known across the realm as the heir presumptive, was also a traitor. He was conspiring with disloyal vassals, with men and women lusting after his birthright. So, in a single stroke he stopped the daggers from striking. The king who had once promising to make Dorne blossom instructed his loyal retainers to execute his daughter in law and her Dornish offspring. With the city safe from his foes, the king made the final step - urged on by his most loyal council - and declared his eldest son a traitor.

EXISTING HOUSE APPLICATION

House Sigil:
Image

House Words: As High As Honor
Allegiance Paid to: The Iron Throne
Approx Number of military at command: 45,000 - mounted to unmounted ratio 1/3.
History of the House (At least two well written paragraphs please):
The Arryns are considered to come from the oldest and purest line of Andal nobility, which they say reaches back to Andalos and possibly Hugor of the Hill. When King Robar II Royce began to unite the First Men and defeat some of the petty Andal kings during the Andal invasion, the Andals of the Vale united behind Ser Artys Arryn, the Falcon Knight, a native Valeman esteemed amongst his peers as the finest warrior of his day. Robar was slain in the Battle of the Seven Stars, possibly by Artys, and the First Men houses who remained bent the knee and swore fealty to Artys Arryn, the First of His Name, new-crowned King of Mountain and Vale. From that day, the Vale became known as the Vale of Arryn.

In Aegon's Conquest, Visenya was charged with subduing the Vale. Sharra Arryn, Queen Regent of the Vale, ruling in the name of her son, the boy-king Ronnel Arryn, amassed the Vale's army at the Bloody Gate. Visenya, however, flew on Vhagar to the courtyard of the Eyrie to obtain the surrender of the Vale of Arryn. When Sharra returned to the Eyrie she found her son sitting on Visenya's lap asking if he could ride the dragon with her. Once Sharra yielded and bent the knee, Ronnel twice flew with Visenya and Vhagar. The Arryns have since remained Defenders of the Vale and Wardens of the East for the Iron Throne.

Following the rule of Lord Jasper Arryn, his eldest son Jon inherited the Eyrie. Having been the Keeper of the Gates of the Moon as a young man before his father's death, Jon fought for King Jaehaerys II Targaryen in 260 AC during the War of the Ninepenny Kings. As a result of alliances made during this war, Jon eventually fostered Eddard Stark from Winterfell and Robert Baratheon from Storm's End.

While Lord Jasper, upon his death, left three children, his descendants experienced a variety of calamities that left the house with fewer heirs. Jasper's successor and eldest son, Lord Jon, married several times. His first wife, Lady Jeyne Royce, died in childbirth, their daughter stillborn. His second wife, Lady Rowena Arryn, a cousin, died childless of a winter chill. Jon's younger brother Ronnel married a woman from House Belmore. She became pregnant, but around the same time as she gave birth to their son, Elbert, Ronnel died of a bad belly. As Jon did not have any sons, his nephew Elbert became his heir. Jon and Ronnel's sister, Alys, was married to Ser Elys Waynwood, with whom she had eight daughters and one son. Alys died soon after her last childbirth, however, and her son, Jasper, died at a young age. Their eldest daughter was married to Ser Denys Arryn, a distant cousin, and their children became the Arryn heirs following Elbert. Of the remaining seven daughters, two died, one became a septa, another a silent sister, one proved barren following her marriage, and the sixth was kidnapped by the Burned Men on her way to her marriage in the riverlands. The youngest of them married a man from House Hardyng, with whom she had a son, Harrold. Despite not having sons of his own, Jon Arryn thus had several heirs through whom his house could continue.

Dont worry, IRL concerns should always take precedence.

Most likely this, unless you want to have the Boltons declare for the King.

Question on the Kingsguard

Did any of them accompany Rheagar to dragonstone? If so, how did they react?

And how did the other Kingsguard react to the royal murders in Kingslanding?

None of the Kingsguard went with Rhaegar. They are probably mortified by what happened bit their Oaths preclude them from taking action, even Lewyn Martell.

Dayne was Rhaegar's closest friend, but I doubt he would put Rhaegar above his Oath to the Throne. He may be a decisive ally later however.

They most likely either fled to their respective lands when Rhaegar left or did so when the Mad King executed Elia and the Children.

They most likely either fled to their respective lands when Rhaegar left or did so when the Mad King executed Elia and the Children.

So, Rhaegar's response to the Dornish and their offer to hire the Golden Company?

Unless the Golden Company is an empty promise it would be best not to promise that. The Golden Company fought for Maelys Blackfire against Jaeharys II just over 20 years before. Not only did they attempt to oust Rhaegar's grandfather in quite recent history but they are also massively associated with the Blackfyres. Then you have the fact that the GC is made up mostly of Westerosi exiles (exiled by the Targs) and the not-confirmed-but-quite-probably-correct theory that the Golden Company's secret aim remains to put a descendant of House Blackfyre upon the throne so it's a question of why they would ever help Rhaegar. Also incredibly expensive and I doubt the Martells can reasonably afford them.

I pre-discussed this with Balerion before the IC was posted, and he said the Martells have the money.

But yes, I did consider that.

Balerion, what are your thoughts?

Personally I believe that the GC's aim remains and they would never help the Targaryens in this fashion. The Golden Company are the most expensive sellsword company there is, so unless the Martells plan to bankrupt themselves it seems (to me) unrealistic for most Westerosi houses to be able to afford them unless you are the throne, the Lannisters, the Tyrells, or maybe the Hightowers. I think it would be for the best if we kept them out.

That's my POV though and we shall see what OP decides upon.

I would not be surprised if the Martell's could theoretically afford it, provided, as Yaana claims, they do not mind draining their treasury. A loan or two from the Iron Bank might be in possible if need be.

As for if they would, that is a more difficult question. In the books, they support Aegon VI under the assumption he is a trueborn Targaryen. Similarly, the original plan was for the Golden Company was to travel with Aegon back to Meereen to join with Daenerys. Tyrion states that their main motivation now could be just to return home.

It is hard to know what they would do, I think it will depend on if the Martell's representative can be alluring enough to tempt the Company into working for Dorne.

It is also possible it is in contract with someone else already.

I will think more about it later today.
