“Eventually, we will come to an impasse with another intelligent species (if we last long enough). Maybe AI, or something else. But either our existence or theirs must come to an end. What gives us the right to make that determination? Why should we be allowed to survive if doing so comes at the cost of the extinction of another species?”
-Alexander Grim

Introduction

I'm not very creatively motivated lately, so here we are.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH! GET HYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYPED! Lith is back from his hiatus for god knows how long!

Okay, not even sure how many of ya'll will even remember me, or this series. Which is totally okay. It's been forever since I've had much of a presence here. So if you are like, "Who the *bleep*ing *bleep* is this *bleep*er?", I'll understand. XD

But all of that aside, I am currently working towards creating a vidya game. Buuuut I've got this issue of wanting to game instead of write when I have time off. So the worldbuilding and story writing is moving much slower than I want.

So here's what I'mma gonna do. I'm going to finish the basics of the worldbuilding in this thread, and allow you all to enter what I have created. As your characters interact with the world, it will give me the "oomph" and opportunity to think it through, and continue fleshing it out. I won't steal your stories or characters when I make the game. Rather, think of this as a means of forcing me to get off my lazy butt, and really flesh out the world that I have in my head.

I'm tired, so I'm already rambling...

Anywho, before I completely lose you all, welcome to the world of Sempiternal!

And do remember this is a WIP, and an interest thread. Soooooooo, it's obviously VERY rough. Most of the worldbuilding is written down elsewhere, but it's rather haphazard. So what I'm mostly working on is rewriting what I have so it makes sense. I expect to have things ready for a proper IC thread in the next week or two.

Overview

It happened. Humanity has fallen. Winter encompasses our world.

It has been over eight hundred years since GRIMS tore through the skybox, opening our world to the freezing vacuum of space (note: will explain atmosphere, etc. later). Ice covers the globe, frozen wastes spread as far as the eye can see. Survival is all that matters now.

Within the Eternal Valley lies the bones of mankind’s former glory. Aeternum city within its midst, a desolate reminder of better times. Around it stretches the ruins of human towns, skyscrapers, homes. All was lost, and we may never gain it back.

Humanity has moved backwards in many ways. Technology has been lost, and most equipment is merely leftover from the Aeternum years. At this point, they are just making upkeep with the equipment they’ve got, and trying not to lose it.

The world has become more hostile. Radioactive blizzards abound, where even the thickest armor will succumb to it’s assault, frying circuits and destroying mechs. And during the nights, the most dangerous of the robotic lifeforms come out, attacking all in sight. As a result, humanity has dug underground, creating small cities and towns from where they may make forays onto the surface for much needed resources and tech.

There are some who claim there is hope for the remnant. Civilizations will emerge, cities rebuilt, a home reclaimed from the apocalypse. But how will they continue when their survival hangs on the edge of a knife?

Image

Radioactive Blizzards

WIP

Not only does the freezing cold kill, but the blizzards are worse. Because of the many melted Nuclear Plants that dotted the landscape, radioactivity hangs in the air, whipped up into a frenzy by the harsh winds. Unless you find a safe haven, it is only a matter of time before you will succumb to it's assault. As of yet, humanity has not found a way to fully shield their mechs from the storms, although certain hostile robots seem to have found a solution.

Image

Archangels

The greatest of the robotic lifeforms on Earth are the Archangels. They are massive, AI controlled mechs that sometimes can be seen roaming the wastes. They do not tend to outright attack human settlements, and seem to pay little attention to passersby. However, if they are provoked, they will quickly wipe out any opposing force. Perhaps it is best to leave them be.

Rumors abound that these AI were created by GRIMS herself, but little has been found to substantiate this.

Image

Mechs and their Operators

WIP

Personal mech suit: suit barely larger than the average human, giving them increased mobility, strength, and armor. The weakest, and most common mech.

The most valuable equipment man owns is the mech. Mechs are one of the few vehicles that are capable of traveling on the surface of the Earth and still able to adequately defend itself from the hostile robots that roam the wastes. And since the supply of mechs is limited, being an operator is quite an honor.

There are several types of mech operators. There are soldiers, adventurers, scientists, and scavengers.

Scavenging the abandoned cities and towns is the primary work of the mech scavengers. Their goal is to gather as much wealth and supplies from the abandoned cities and other factions, and give them to their faction, giving them the most money and supplies as possible.

Instead of trying to gain supplies and wealth for their faction, scientists scavenge for history, for old tech, for improvements that were lost.

Adventurers attempt to roam the entirety of the lost cities. Mapping out the whole is their primary goal, finding every nook, every cranny, every single cave and hole. Nothing is too dangerous to be reached, too far to be found out.

When a faction wants to expand, or to maintain the borders they currently hold, they send out their soldiers. Death and destruction is their sole goal, killing off any enemy of the state or religion they come from. No other operator has so much power to fight and kill as they do.

Note: Remember that "history is made by the victors", or in our case, "history is made by humans, and humans love propaganda". So any timelines you may infer from the information found here is not necessarily canon. As the story unfolds, you may learn more.

"What was lost, we will reclaim.
What has died, we will resurrect.
What will defy us, we will end."
-Prime Minister Jeremy Scold

Claiming to be the direct descendant of Aeternum (the dead mega-corporation that once ruled over the Eternal Valley and much of the world), the Eternal Republic strives to bring back the golden days of technology and progress that it's namesake represented. It’s gates are open to all humans and friendly robots, and all are represented in the Republic’s Parliament.

The government is meant to be a representational democracy, but just as the mega-corporations of old, it has been highly corrupted by the merchants and business factions within itself and is thus run as an oligarchy. There is a surprising amount of inequality between rich and poor, which is quite impressive since there isn't exactly a massive amount of resources to go around.

Within the Republic you can find just about anyone you can think of. Scientists to adventurers, Mercenaries to old helper bots, revolutionaries to...not so revolutionaries, they all flock to the Republic. And the one thing that holds this Republic together is hope. Hope that mankind will once again rule the world, hope that the winter will end, hope that what was lost will be regained. Either that or some other form of propaganda that the PR board has cooked up.
Image

"It was then that our Lord came down to us. Her hair flowed in the moonlight, stars across her breast. No beauty compared to her.
She spoke to the Earth, saying, 'Open your heart to me, let your lips drip with praises. Love me, for all blessings shall pour over you, making you whole again.'"
-The Book of Endings

Not so long after the destruction of the skybox, the remnant of humanity founded the Republic. For a short time, it seemed that the people of the Eternal Valley were united against the apocalypse that ensued. But there came a powerful religious sect lead by self-proclaimed Empress Morgana.

According to The Book of Endings (the accepted scriptures of the Empire), Morgana is the daughter of the Elder Goddess of Wisdom, Tyran. It is said that Tyran was the Divine Guardian, having been created by the Eldest gods with the sole purpose of protecting the first humans. For thousands of years, Tyran lead them in righteousness and with ever expanding knowledge. However, Tyran disobeyed the Eldest, rebelling against them and leading humanity to fall from their graces.

Worship of the Eldest disappeared from the Earth then, and mankind lost their way.

To atone for her sin, Tyran birthed Morgana when the time was ripe for humanity to return to the old ways. And long story made a little less lengthy, Morgana led those chosen by Tyran to found a new empire based upon the newly found teachings of the ancients.

"Unless you shits got some moonshine or a deer carcass, shut the hell up!"
-Some tribesman...Probably...

The Forgotten Tribe is made up of soldiers that deserted from the Republic and Imperial armies. They live as nomadic criminals, rejected by everyone they fought for, and now struggle to just scrounge up enough food to last through the day.

They operate as a tribe proper. They have a chieftain who acts as commander, a small council of elders, hell, they even have a shaman. Okay, they don't have a shaman, but the rest is true.

In order to survive, they tend to make raids on Imperial and Republic under-cities.

Welcome back Lith. Looking at the lore stuff, I take it this Sempiternal has nothing to do with the previous one, right?

In a sense it does. But it takes place after the events that would have transpired in it.

If you want some ideas for workdbuilding, give me a shout. It looks like an interesting setting.

Hmm very cool, I like this setting. Can I make a suggestion for the factions, because we might aswell start there. I don't want generic war faction, scientist faction, trade faction, etc. I think it may be more refreshing to have the factions be generally on the same page, putting their survival first, with different internal structures and leadership structures, but where the military prowess and scientific prowess and wealth and all that is purely dependent on what the mech pilots bring in to them and the resources at their disposal. Pretending this is a 4X game (altho I doubt that): the Gorganzolas may be a really good military power in one game and a nice sprawling self-sufficient faction in the next and a scientific utopia in the one after that, but they are always a dictatorship with a dictatorially determined king, it's just sometimes the most advanced pilot wins, sometimes the most skilled pilot wins, and most times it's something in between.

Or it may be interesting to have some sort of generally non-active local government and then dozens of overlapping factions, where a pilot could be a member of certain factions and the factions may work together or against (again as determined by the actions of the pilots and not anything predetermined) eachother. Some factions may be actively at war, e.g. the Murumboee hate the Protecc and can have small skirmishes in safe zones like cities, but out on the surface, a member of Protecc may actively backstab a Murumboee even if they are both questing for the generally neutral Microcoft Gaurd.

Those are some ideas, I'm not sure you asked for them, so go crazy.

I honestly had a similar idea for a plot. Where the heroes were a sparsely populated colony that was trying to survive despite armies of titan-sized mechs. One idea was that the humans couldn't be in one space, because the titans will gladly track down any heat signature that a large colony could produce. So they might keep track of where the titans were, but they couldn't stay in one underground place before the heat they produced would lead to the titans finding them.

The other being there would be rumor of an ancient satellite weapon, maybe from a former human civilization, that might be able to kill titans and restart human life. The problem was, nobody knew how to access it. There was rumor of a beacon that could make uplink, but... it was deep in titan territory. To get it, they might risk their lives trying to fight the titans all at once, people would likely die, for a signal that might not even exist. (the uplink might show up on the radio, but it needs to be activated manually).

So a beacon shows up. It might be able to reach outer space. With it, you could uplink this supposed satellite weapon (maybe a laser or something). So strap in your mechs, go through archangel space and prepare for a high-flying high-risk adventure through the arctic.

Sortof a "well, we can either risk our lives for this laser (which may not exist), or try and live our lives in hiding until we are killed by archangels."

this has been a worldbuilding idea.
