Makes me wonder if there should be a universal level of royalty rank.

Cause High King and King can be confusing if they were treated as the same rank.

Historically speaking, it would be something like this:

Emperor
King, High King, Grand or High Duke and Grand Prince
Duke, Prince and High Chief
Count, Earl and Chief. (Prince could fit here as well)
Baron and similar
Minor Nobles

The different names for the titles of the same rank would be mostly because of cultural differences.

(A prince would be the ruler of a principality)

In Atheo, there is a massive miles deep prison called "The Pit" that has held the most notorious criminals in the undersea worlds for thousands of years, back before the empire even. No one really knows when the pit was started. But it had a warden who didnt age while in there, and when there where no more living prisoners he left. But, theres a monster who guards the pit and makes sure no one escapes. All I'm saying is it might be important to the plot later because it could be weaponized ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
