Rep. James Rhodes @James_RhodesMD In New York City's mayoral election, which is coming up very soon, there is one clear liberal and Democratic choice: Kate Braum! She's got the experience, serving as Director of City Planning and other positios in local government. She's as New York as they come! Full support and backing! RETWEETSFAVORITE 275431 |

Kate Braum is somebody who has served with distinction in all her previous roles. She would be an excellent mayor of New York.

Susan MayfieldThe attorney swung her club fiercely. There was no ball on the tee in front of her; just practice. A committee staff served as her caddy. She was an exceptional player of the sport, a surprise to all who didn't know her. It was competitive, yet laid back. She honed her skills with years of practice, where this same golf course would serve as her second conference room; all who really knew her played with Mayfield here. If you haven't; then oh well.
Today she waited for congressman Jared O'Leary; she might let him win. After all, she was trying to win his endorsement.

Showing up with a golf hat that would have looked in place among his Irish ancestors and a vest that fit a country club look for someone who had spent plenty of time in them as well as a caddy in a black suit and sunglasses despite the warm day Jared was in a casual mood going into a meeting that was technically a competition but that he didn't expect anything from. He had spent plenty of time on the golf courses and tennis courts of establishments where well heeled people had their recreation from teenagehood following his father to Yale to the legal career to politics and he didn't feel like he really needed to be competitive when he could cruise through casually playing scratch. He hadn't been to Bonnie Brook that he could remember but wasn't stressing over it and was thinking about what was going to happen with the lady he was meeting. Samara had randomly emailed him out of the blue about her which seemed strange and possibly vaguely suspicious if you were paranoid, but he ended up getting in touch with her about the same time. She had met with MacFarland he knew and the old man had even been soft on her. He read on her record and there could be worse Governors, but first he had to make sure that she knew how the game worked, and he wasn't talking about golf.

Susan MayfieldMayfield saw the approaching O'Leary, who's appearance was non-distinct in his golf course surroundings, but she pitied his poor suited-up caddy. She fixed up her blouse a bit, and walked towards the representative. Waving, she approached; "Mr O'Leary, it's a pleasure to meet you."

Jared felt a little miffed at first about Mayfield skipping out on his title, but his father had always taken "Mr. O'Leary" as an address of respect and maybe a little bit of the old man's very different demeanor had rubbed off on his youngest kid. "Good to meet you Ms. Mayfield. Not a bad day to walk the course don't you think?"

"Thank you!
I am really thankful for your presence here! Thank you! I must admit that this is… overwhelming, simply overwhelming. I hate to be repetitive, but really, thank you.
Tonight I would like to tell you why I’m here, but also what enabled me to be here. Having grown up here in Greenpoint I consider myself to be very lucky, because for the better or worse I was able to live a life my parents or grandparents couldn't have dreamt of. 28 years ago my parents, a newly wed couple from south-western Poland came to this country seeking a better future. They sold their apartment back in Poland and most of their belongings to be able to come to the United States and be ready for any potential hardships that came with being an immigrant. It wasn't easy. They risked everything for a better future for our family, for me. And like with many immigrant stories, the story of my parents is nothing like the things you would see in a movie.
Back in Poland, my father was a teacher, barely out of a university. Proud of his achievements and hopeful for the future. The 80s were not a good time to be in Poland. It was the time of political turmoil, of uncertainty… When June 4th, 1989 came around my father made a difficult decision, a very painful decision to leave the country as soon as that was possible. With a very limited knowledge of english he and my mother got very lucky, managed to get into the US. Entering a different country meant facing new challenges though. My father took on every job he could to sustain himself and his family, including his newborn child. It was tough. His idealistic view of the United States was challenged by the harsh reality of living here, especially as a migrant.
The shared experiences of my family are one of the main reasons why I’m here. The struggle, the anxiety, the necessity to improve our community, our country are why I’m speaking to you today.
Like many of you I don't come from a background of wealth and privillege. Perhaps it is that lack of privillege that let's me see one of our nation's biggest problems, issue the top 1% is willfully ignorant to - wealth and income inequality at an unthinkable level. Our district is a prime example of that problem, because not only do we live in the richest country in history of human kind, but we also live in one of, if not the, wealthiest districts of that country. Within it you'll be able to find two greatly different neighbourhoods - Williamsburg and Brooklyn Heights - one with a median income of 35 thousand dollars, the other - with nearly 120 thousand. This is a rather large disparity, one that is not foreign to other parts of our state and one that is certainly not foreign to other parts of our country. This disparity is not a matter of luxuries or lack thereof, it does not simply impact the place you go vacationing, but rather if you do at all. It’s a matter of access to basic commodities such as education, healthcare, housing, even clothing and food.
For our nation to survive, for it's people to thrive we must put an end to starvation wages, expensive housing and lack of healthcare.
I'm not saying this to alienate or demonize anyone, but to show a larger problem. In our country there are even cities without access to clean drinking water. Clean drinking water. This is not a third world country that I'm speaking of. Again, we’re talking about the wealthiest country in the history of mankind. There is clearly something wrong with the way things are. I believe that in a country such as ours healthcare should be treated as a right and not a privilege. I believe in a government that doesn’t stand idly by when every year over 40 thousand Americans die due to lack of health insurance. I believe in a government that takes action to prevent the financial ruin of families affected by sickness. Universal healthcare works and it’s time for the United States to join the rest of the industrialized world in providing healthcare to its citizens. If elected, I will proudly I support the United States National Health Care Act and fight for universal healthcare.
My campaign is about challenging the Status Quo. I believe it is up to us, ordinary, everyday Americans to bring forward the change we so desperately need. My campaign is about building a truly representative democracy with average, everyday Americans fighting for change in office or marching on the streets demanding action on climate change, on campaign finance reform, on minimum wage, on civil rights, bombarding inactive Congressmen and women with phone calls and messages saying 'We want change'. I personally work with a diverse group of ambitious people to bring that change to all of America, be it on the progressive West Coast and in New England, the Rust Belt as well as in the conservative South. There are conversations, such as this one, that need to be had. Conversations build every movement and you can be a part of this one. Now, I don't expect you to start campaigning for progressives on the West Coast overnight or topple confederate statues in the South. But you can help here, at home. My campaign is always looking for volunteers and, because I refuse to accept corporate donations, is always in need of money. Because our campaign is dedicated to it's values every step of the way.
We do not have any corporate donors to open campaign offices on the Fifth Avenue for us or a Super PAC to run ads in my name. Because I believe we need to take big money out of politics. We need to overturn Citizens United. This is the kind of change that would affect our entire political system as well as our economy. No longer would our country be run by oligarchs and progress stifled by lobbyists. I am dedicated to the issue of campaign finance, because it affects every aspect of governance such as aforementioned universal healthcare or effective countering of climate change. The influence of big corporations whose profits depend on the continuation of climate change must be limited. The federal government needs to make it's support of the scientific community clear and pursue a policy of transformation of our energy system. In order to protect our environment America needs to build a 100% renewable energy system. This, like many others, is a policy that will work for all Americans, leaving no one behind. The upcoming transformation will ensure that those working in the energy system, people such as miners, will not be left behind without a job or food to put on the table.
And maybe I am way in over my head running for Congress at 26, but that doesn’t change the fact that like many young people in this country I face the same challenges they do. Like many young Americans I too, am burdened with enormous debt - handling which is not easy while running for Congress, believe me. We have to stop the endless wars and destruction and in their place invest in good quality, tuition-free higher education. We must build an economy of peace, not war. We must ensure that the bright people of our country will receive adequate education regardless of their economic standing, race, gender or sexual orientation.
We must also defend the rights of every American. In order to do so we must use the power of Congress to implement policies that would combat discrimination, hatred and bigotry. If we want to live in a fairer society we must stand with the LGBTQ+ community in fighting for their rights. Unlike to some, it is clear to me that adequate legislation must be passed to do so effectively. Because unlike some I know what discrimination is, from first hand experience. Unlike some I truly believe in the unalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, because to me those are not simply slogans to use for my own benefit, political gain or fear mongering.
In times like these we have to be particularly vigilant when it comes to challenges and issues women face in their lives. We must do everything in our power to protect women’s rights - the right to choose, the right to adequate, good quality medical care and education. We must ensure equal pay for equal work and paid maternal leave. The United States as a nation needs to become a champion of women’s rights. We need to repeal the Women’s Alternative Choices Act. I am running in the Democratic primary, because I believe that the party needs to reflect on this chapter of it's history, turn away from Carollton's and Winston's Democratic Party and become the Democratic Party that puts the people of this country first. Some progress has been made. The defeat has been felt, now is the time to push further for change.
The election is far ahead of us and I know there are so many issues that are yet to be addressed. Over the course of this campaign I will try my best to address them all, but I need your support. Running a grassroots campaign requires a lot of manpower and a lot of money. I hope that you will support us in this undertaking. Even the smallest donations count. The volunteers that are here today weren’t bought. Some of them are my friends with who I grew up with here, some of them are people who I met just a couple of days ago, but all of them want to change this country for the better. As I end my speech today, I hope that you will join me in this endeavour, that you will support me in the upcoming primary, as well as the general election.
If you have any questions feel free to ask, I won't bite - at least this time. Thank you!”
