Sydney scanned the crowd. The older and middle-aged among them were nodding their heads in agreement, as expected. But while the younger ones also showed agreement, she got the sense that while they supported her in principle, they may not yet support her in practice.

She had been out of politics for nearly 20 years. It would be foolish to neglect these younger voters, especially when she wanted to reach out to them during the campaign.

That would not do at all, to possibly lose to a write-in nobody or a Libertarian candidate.

“If you wish, I would like to take some questions from the younger members.”

She remained on stage, electing to answer their queries.

"Why you?" says a young woman in the back "What makes you the best standard-bearer for conservatism? What makes you unique?"

Jason Samara Campaign Stop #29
Springfield, Hampden County

Image

Samara’s ad was being well received though not generating quite as much buzz as he hoped. He had been hitting healthcare consistently on the campaign trail so far and it was still the primary issue of the campaign but he decided he needed to be a bit bolder, idealist and more progressive for a bit to avoid a challenge on his left. To that end he looked at his polling of what the state said were the most important issues.

Healthcare was already a centerpiece, as was the Economy. Homeland Security was a topic take he wanted to hit more but wasn’t sure that his position would be best for a leftward pivot… on Abortion he was already on the far left with his recent votes and could honestly say he would zealously defend a woman’s right to choose. That meant it was time to tackle guns.

He had been to Springfield for a rally previously but this time came with another purpose, going back to his roots of organizing a protest. Smith and Wesson’s Corporate HQ was located in Springfield and Samara had gotten a permit to organize a protest as close as possible to the HQ.

Samara’s focus on college campuses paid off here, as well as his connections with grassroots and advocacy organizations. He put mighty effort into getting as many people as possible to join the weekend rally, bringing countless homemade signs and boundless energy of youth. He allowed a few student speakers and advocates to tell personal stories about how gun violence had affected them. Samara was not the first speaker or the last speaker, but was there to support each and every one, personally thanking them for their time.

Before Samara spoke he made sure his directive to not bring Samara for Senate Campaign materials, signs, buttons etc. was followed to the letter and that anyone who might have brought them was not in view of the camera while he spoke.

Image

“I want to thank everyone for sharing their time… their passion, dedication and their stories, their personal struggles. Its because of people like you that our state has always been a leader on responsible gun control laws, its because of people like you that Massachusetts has one of the lowest rates of gun violence in the nation.”

“But the status quo isn’t good enough, even one gun-related death is too many, and we will move forward addressing the root causes of gun violence and keeping guns out of the hands of those who wish to use them for violence.”

“Let’s stop Gun Violence before it starts, addressing the root causes of violence by investing in education, housing, job training, health care especially mental health, and other programs that provide stability in people’s lives. We must support community policing efforts aimed at building strong neighborhood ties and engaging high-risk youth in education and violence prevention programs. We must partner with cities and towns to target gun violence hot spots, address abandoned and blighted properties, and revitalize high-crime neighborhoods to create positive development and community opportunity. And we must continue to invest in opioid and other drug addiction treatment to reduce the incidence of gun crimes committed to feed addictions and fuel illegal trafficking.”

“I also support the creation of extreme risk protective orders, allowing family or household members, health care providers, or law enforcement officers or district attorneys with appropriate jurisdiction to petition the courts for a temporary order to keep firearms out of the hands of people who are an extreme risk to themselves or others. Time and time again we hear the stories of people warning authorities of at risk individuals who go on to commit horrible acts, now the authorities have the means to act on this information and get these individuals the help they need before the worst occurs.”

“We need to reintroduce the Federal Assault Weapons ban, and ensure that devices like hellfire triggers and bump stocks that turn guns into automatic weapons. If anyone says our gun laws are too strict in this country remind them that Dianna Noble walks free today.”

“It makes complete sense… complete sense… to want to know if the person buying a deadly weapon might want to use it to murder another human being. It makes complete sense to want to know if the person buying a firearm has committed a felony or a violent crime, if they have a mental disorder or are on a terrorist watch list. This is not going to stop every crime but it will go a long way to fighting it. This should not be a political issue but organizations like the NRA politicize it.”

“The NRA is one of the most powerful forces in Congress, thats not just because of the money they can donate to political campaigns, its because they have influence over voters. Well let me say this, 80% of NRA members support background checks, 90% of the public. It is time for universal background checks.”

“Our federal gun laws are riddled with loopholes, particularly in the existing background check system for anonymous and undocumented private sales at gun shows. We need immediate reform, measures like Developing a risk-assessment instrument to identify denied gun purchasers who are most at risk for future violence, establishing an alert system for failed background checks, conducting background checks of gun-dealer employees, Expanding multiple-sale reporting, Penalizing states that fail to provide records to NICS, and making disarming domestic abusers a priority. Finally we need to better regulate gun dealers, forming a joint task for with the ATF and FBI to investigate internet gun sales.”

“This isn’t just a fight we see in places like Sandy Hook, this is a fight we see every day on the streets of our cities like Baltimore and Chicago. Its not just about assault weapons, 31,000 people will be killed with illegal handguns this year, 12,000 murdered, 19,000 will commit suicide. That’s unacceptable.”

“We need to get illegal guns of our streets, we need to support local efforts of cities that aggressively confiscate illegal guns and as we work on comprehensive immigration reform to get non-violent criminals out of prison to become productive members of society, we need to ensure repeat violent offenders suffer the harshest penalties. Gun Courts like those in New York will help tackle the scourge of illegal guns and get those profiting off death selling illegal guns off our streets.”

“No more thoughts… No more Prayers… Its time for action on gun violence.”

"Immigration reform is the key promise of the policy part of my platform. The AFSA is also core and then this coming bill for maternity leave and child care. Washington D.C.

It was a warm summers afternoon and Senator Kramer had decided to go for a walk to the Constitution Gardens and enjoy the scenery there. Whilst walking, Kramer decided to purchase a copy of the Washington Times for when he arrived there.

After a fairly long walk, Kramer arrived at the gardens, deciding to find a place to sit at, Kramer walked through the gardens intently, and upon finding a bench with a view of the Washington Monument behind, sat down quietly reading his paper.

Donald Johnson was taking a stroll through Constitution Gardens. It was nice out, so Donald went without a tie that day.

With a combination of the heat and the amount of walking Donald did, he decided he would take a break and rest his feet. He had spotted a lovely bench with a view of the Washington Monument and decided that was where he would rest. However, as he approached the bench he spotted an elderly man who looked like one Alois Kramer.

“Senator Kramer, only you could be so bold.” Donald stayed as he hovered beside the bench.

Kramer heard a rather familiar voice coming from his side, as he turned he saw that it was Representative Johnson.

"Ah, good afternoon Representative. Indeed, I must be bold to walk in this heat at my age." Kramer replied warmly.

“Very hot today, I hope you put on some sunscreen!” He warned.

Then Donald remembered the things that Alois Kramer was doing. He took a seat beside the older man on the bench.

“Shouldn’t you be campaigning for President? The election is only three years away! You don’t want to end up like that loser, Senator Eggman from Rhode Island. He lost the primaries to a total outsider!”

“Very good point my friend.”

Donald day in silence for a moment, taking in the rays of the sun. Washington D.C was a very nice place, minus the tourists.

“Mr. Kramer, do you support the STD act?”

The biggest piece of advice I'd have is that complaining hasn't ever gotten anyone anywhere, and learning that is the first step to getting somewhere yourself. Some things are still worse for women then men, it's not a perfect world, but that doesn't mean you get an excuse not to try to push through. Today especially, almost anything a woman is capable of in this country, she has the chance to do, if that's politics, if that's business, whatever it is. It may be a little harder sometimes, but a life where everything comes easy to you sounds like a boring life to me.

But there are some places where the barriers are just put there by biology, and you have to understand that there's nothing you can do about that. If she pushes herself hard enough, a woman can qualify for combat now, but I don't think we're ever going to have a female Green Beret. The strongest men are still a lot stronger then the strongest women, it's just muscles and hormones, and that's not a gap you can cross. (Maybe with drugs. Don't do drugs.) It's the same reason why I don't think there will ever be a woman in something like the NBA (even if now there's a man in the WNBA now, because people are going insane). Never let someone tell you that you can't do something, but know your own limits. Don't let tough going discourage you, but don't kill yourself on the impossible. Aim high, but make sure you're aiming well, and most of all, make sure you're aiming at the right thing. Find a target that's your target, but don't be content with just tapping something that's easy. Be industrious, take responsibility, but don't just do what you feel like you're being pushed into, find what matters, accept the challenges on the way, but don't fall into the trap of thinking that hills are walls. Climb it, and plant your flag.

Maybe that's just a bunch of mixed metaphors at this point. Psychology isn't my thing, and I'm sure there are a lot of young women with dreams there that can say what I just said a lot better than I did, it's not that high a bar to clear. Maybe I can just say it like this, if you want to make a difference in the world, take action. Too much time worrying about if you're doing it the right way, making the right choice, that's the stuff that snowballs into stalling at the starting line. If you end up going the wrong direction, you can always change course, but if you don't start moving, you're never going to get somewhere. Be proud to be a woman. It's who you are, it's how you were made, and it's up to you what you make of it.

I am glad that the First Lady has opened up like this to the American public. But her commentary that "People are going insane" to refer to the acceptance of a transgender player in the WNBA is disgusting. It is outdated slander that trans people across this country are mentally ill, which is flat out wrong and has been utterly rejected.

This administration and current Congress has already shown resolve in retracting progressive policies towards all members of the LGBTQ+ community and the First Lady's words only detract from this very real, human conversation. Trans rights should remain protected across this country and I hope others join me in recognizing the importance of defending the rights of ALL people.
