"Our state has a deficit right now and cannot afford to spend more on Medi-Cal and Medicare as it is- and you want to create a whole new program? What in the heck does private single payer mean, anyway?"

Bob had heard from the LA County party that Cox had been tough on crime and prudent with infrastructure- a real straight shooter at City Hall. Now that he was hearing from the man himself, he was losing confidence in those reports.

"Ahem. Pardon me for the misunderstanding. I was actually referring to single-payer healthcare. And I simply want to is to make sure all of our hospitals and clinics in the state are operational for everyone to use. I'm not going to propose taxes to solve the problem. All I'm simply offering is a solution on how we can improve our healthcare, without directly resorting to taxes. As for the deficit, I'm wish to encourage economic growth as a solution to fix it."

Cox was a bit tense, when he said it. "Come on, you jackass. You better dodge the bullet with this one!" he thought in his mind.

Bob frowned at this answer. "Now hold on- we're going to finish up with healthcare first. A public option is different than single-payer healthcare. And both are terrible ideas. How would you pay for a public option or single-payer without raising taxes? The Democrats have been trying to get single-payer for years, and each time it's been insanely expensive and cost far more than what the state currently brings in."

Pulling numbers from who knows where isn't going to convince anyone if we don't have any reason to believe them when "common sense" says spending more money is more expensive and that if 70% of people support your plan that you should have gotten over 50% of the vote. If you want to convince me that your magic plan is actually real, then you're going to have to do better than numbers that take a whole lot of faith to believe.

If you want some free advice, if you want to spend a ton more money and need to raise taxes to do it, just admit it and try to convince people why you think it's a good idea. Playing fantasy games just makes you look like a joke.

If you're talking about the New Mexican Senator, what happened to her was disgusting. Every person who was a part of that should be rotting in jail, and everyone involved with running that complete disaster of an event should have to face the consequences for gross negligence, and worse if we find out they had a hand in what happened. At best it was a mob with speakers trying to rile up the worst of the crowd and not caring about the consequences, and at worst it was just an outright hit job. That march and what they did was a black mark on this country.

On the Rossi investigation, I've heard Senator Carter is in charge of that, and I heard he was basically closing it before actually digging out the truth. Not following that investigation through all the way would be a mistake, but I think an investigation of the "National March for Equality" and that real attack is more important.

I recommend you get together a FBI investigation with the help of your husband for what happened at the March. I don't really have any good theories on what happened. Could be an ANTIFA attack, but I checked into their affairs and I gotten no leads. Your best bet is that it's a radical group. But I feel like someone tipped those attackers off about Maria.

Sydney couldn’t help but smile back at Cox as he left.

He really knows how to read a room, doesn’t he?

In one day -one day!- he managed to botch his entire campaign just from one question.

But she also sensed the mood of the crowd shifting against him.

It would be a good time to remind them that she was still in the race, and she was willing to “lead them into battle”, as it were.

She decided to get back up on stage and say a few words- and this time, be more pointed about it.

“Ladies and gentlemen, what we just saw with the Mayor is a reminder of one unchanging fact in politics: you need to have the right person at the right time.

We just saw who the wrong person is, but we all know what the right one should be because we’ve seen it before. I am a Republican in that proud Southern California tradition- committed to limited government in the service of the people. Governor Reagan and Governor Deukmejian won two terms each by outlining a clear and optimistic vision- I want to have the same kind of clear and optimistic vision for our own time. You’ve heard a bit of what I want to accomplish already, and over the next few months I will be traveling up and down the state to lay out a comprehensive plan to steer us back in the right direction.

Sydney scanned the crowd. The older and middle-aged among them were nodding their heads in agreement, as expected. But while the younger ones also showed agreement, she got the sense that while they supported her in principle, they may not yet support her in practice.

She had been out of politics for nearly 20 years. It would be foolish to neglect these younger voters, especially when she wanted to reach out to them during the campaign.

That would not do at all, to possibly lose to a write-in nobody or a Libertarian candidate.

“If you wish, I would like to take some questions from the younger members.”

She remained on stage, electing to answer their queries.
