Brooklyn District Office

"Well, bye sir."

She left out the doors of her office, waving back to John and her secretary. Taking off in a rather mild hustle, she took off to catch the Subway to uptown Manhattan. She had scheduled some batting practice to supplement her recent jogging to prepare herself for the Congressional Baseball game. She did not want to embarrass herself, preferring to at least touch up on some skills and learn some new ones.

"Millions of participles, both elementary and dark, exist there."

She took some gum out of her purse, almost unwrapping it before deciding against it. Best to not chew when talking...kind of rude actually

"Nothing more exciting than particles," Appleby commented, stepping aside to let Stafford onto the escalator before him.

She smirked, taking his comment as sarcasm. Accepting his offer to let her onboard first, she stepped onto the escalator and moved downwards.

"What is your favorite part of science?"

Carter was alone in DC. Kara had stayed home to spend time with family, so it was Carter alone unloading his SUV and carrying boxes of office supplies and documents in. He not yet had a secretary, nor any staff to speak of.

With the door to his office wide open, hoping to meet anyone who may be his neighbor, he organized the few things he had brought.

Deciding to go for a stroll and get some fresh air Senator Kramer exited the Dirksen Senate Office Building and walk into the Hart Senate Office Building. As he walked by he saw that the door to one of the offices was open and after backtracking recognised that it was the soon to be office of Senator-Elect Roberts and promptly knocked gently upon the door.

“Come in,” said Roberts, not looking up from the box of campaign finance documents he was sorting through, and therefore not knowing who was actually at the door.

Hearing the calm, elderly Southern voice from the doorway area, Carter looked up.

He almost got angry. But he didn’t hate Senator Kramer. He definitely resented him, doubted his innocence in Dillon, and questioned his motives. But he didn’t hate him. It was hard for Carter to hate anyone, a trait that he carried to a fault. Harboring hate could only create enemies. And Carter wasn’t here to make enemies, so he chose the route of cordiality.

"It was simple really. All I done was when I first campaigned focused on predominantly two groups that were and still are common in the area which were blue collar Americans and farmers. I then placed particular emphasis on my social policy as well as myself being a political outsider at the time. After getting elected I routinely held town halls and other such events to get a concencus on particular issues."

Lincoln Club of Orange County (July 1st, 2017) (4:00 pm)

Image

The Lincoln Club of Orange County had produced Presidents, Senators, Representatives, Governors, and state legislators. At least two generations of California Republicans had formed their political careers with the help of the Club. When the Lincoln Club spoke, Republicans at the local, state, and federal levels listened.

Being invited here represented just how far she had come.

Originally, it had been a cold relationship -at best disinterested and at worst hostile- because of her support for civil rights and public transit. Walter Knott, one of the Club's founders, had backed her opponent in the race for Supervisor, and it only warmed to her during her time as State Senator, long after Walter had died. Their first collaboration was regarding Proposition 187, where she served as the link between the Club and the California Coalition for Immigration Reform. This cooperation only expanded with the campaign for Proposition 212, in which she took the leading role and became the public face of the measure.

Working with its members on the propositions went a long way towards repairing relations, and more recently, her support for Proposition 8 -and her public break with then-Governor Swarzenaggar over it and other issues- had further endeared her to them.

Giving this speech was her way of reminding the most powerful conservative group on the West Coast that she was their only realistic choice. Party unity would be essential for her to make it through the jungle primary, and the backing of the Lincoln Club of Orange County would do a great deal to keep California Republicans united behind her, and win over those hesitant few who did not support her already.

Bob Stewart, the President of the Club, introduced her to loud applause.

“Ladies and gentlemen, please join me in welcoming the next Governor of the state of California, Sydney Cao!”

She approached the podium and looked out to the audience.

"I am delighted to be here Bob, and I would like to thank you and the rest of the Board for inviting me to speak today."

She looked over her prepared remarks -which was very different from its initial version, where she would have spoken after Cox- and began her speech.

"The Republican Party is at its strongest since the Reagan Revolution, holding the presidency and majorities in both houses of Congress. This is no accident, but the result of having a clear vision for the country. There is decisive leadership in Washington- which makes the lack thereof in Sacramento all the more frustrating. While the federal government has been diligent in carrying out the business of the people, I am sorry to say that our state government has not. Instead of tackling the budget deficit, the economic slump, the housing shortage, or any number of urgent problems, Ray Ramirez and his allies in the legislature have chosen to focus on pleasing the special interests and radical activists which keep them in office."

There was not much for the audience to disagree with there, and there was much applause.

"If we are to have a real chance of victory in 2018, we must be willing to break with conventional wisdom. The conventional wisdom says that the candidate of limited government cannot win, and that our only hope is to put forward someone who will stake a claim to the middle ground. The conventional wisdom would have us We have seen what the conventional wisdom has brought us: a California Republican Party that is dying a slow and painful death. Meg Whitman lost in 2010 and Neel Kashkari lost in 2014 not for lack of effort, but because they could not provide a substantively different agenda from their opponents. Voters are -and continue to be- clear on what they expect. They want a balanced budget, a low burden of taxation, and efficiency in government programs. They want socioeconomic mobility and a reasonable cost of living. They want a healthy environment and a sustainable society. Most importantly, they want liberty- along with the freedom that is necessary for themselves, their families, and their communities to flourish.”

There was applause at the clear-eyed, full-throated call for the party to distinguish itself from the Democrats and Progressives. Many felt that party was slowly but surely drifting away from its roots.

"We must remember that we are in the midst of a battle of ideas: on one side are those who would defend limited government, and on the other side are those who would accept unlimited government. The other side can always promise more: more spending, more intervention, more control- more of the same failed policies. But we must be bolder in our ideas and our actions, for the promise of limited government is the promise of a society in which each person is able to develop and pursue their own ambitions- anything less is totally inadequate. This is how you must evaluate every Republican, and I trust your judgement to know who meets this standard and who does not. If the people of this state see that there is a viable alternative to the status quo- they will support it. We must join together to create this alternative, and I am confident that we are up to the task.”

There was applause as she finished what she had to say. This speech was heavy on rhetoric for a reason- she wanted to make clear that she was the only candidate that could unite the state party around a clear and consistent policy agenda.

Speaking of the other, after the speech and while the event was winding down she spoke with members of the Club, re-emphasizing her point about those who would defend limited government vs. those who would “accept” unlimited government- with the implication that Cox was the latter.

They already had doubts about his record as Mayor. She was just confirming what they already suspected was true- that he was not a real Republican.

There could only be one person who could carry the banner come July, and she intended it would be her.

Young Business Complex, Downtown SF
5:35 PM

The dying light of the sun shown it’s last string of rays beyond the eggshell white blinds of Allen’s office. He loved the view, as dusk crept he knew that his day was concluding and the feeling was satisfying. He was wrapping up calls; his nerves were worked up as some incompetent foremen had built a foundation out of aluminum alloy beams instead of steel.

“What the f**k were you thinking John?! Aluminum beams! That won’t support the structure at all!! No...no I don’t care how reinforced they are, I told you I wanted steel beams not these cheap pieces of sh*t....”, he sighed, “ Tear it down, we’ll be setback a week. Gawdammit John, the investors won’t be too pleased but I’ll work on em. Promise me you won’t cut corners,.... no I don’t care what the cost is I wanted to use steel beams on this damn thing. Alright... alright promise you’ll get it done. You’re lucky I like you kid, alright... alright say hi to the wife for me. Alright take care now. I’ll check back with you tomorrow.” He hung up.

He got up from his leathery chair, the crisp sound of the leathery crinkles swelled his ears as he departed his throne. He walked over to his window and slowly unwound the blinds to get a clear view of the drowning sun. It’s descent continued to calm him from his debacle with his foreman. He drew a deep breath and proceeded to close his eyes, even imagining the imagery before him. It was a beautiful sight, like a canvas straight out of a Bob Ross episode, a perfect blend of the city skyline meshed with the blood-red horizon. Allen soaked it in.

The clock struck 6, he officially called it a day. He had a few more calls lined up but he buzzed his secretary to clear the rest of his schedule. He had a big event he was hosting outside on the veranda, a Green Gala... you know one of those events where people could rub shoulders while acting like they’re saving the planet. A ‘pat on the back’ event so to speak. Nonetheless, he was hosting the event here at the Young Complex, his aim was not only to network but to also showcase his new tower which was only a year old. Indeed the Young Business Complex was the crown jewel of his many realty adventures, never mind the fact that the tower was half empty.

He looked at his Rolex once more.

7:05 pm

Allen hastily stuffed some documents back into his briefcase. He never cared for being organized, which defied the expectations of a businessman. Before he departed his office he walked over to a watercolor painting of Pier 39. He jabbed his elbow on the side of the painting and the image had jolted open. Behind was an array of bourgeois booze; he scanned the shelves carefully, preening and canvassing the area, trying to locate his favorite drink.

Ahhh..., he thought to himself.

Amongst the selection of ‘64 Glenlivet bourbon to the ‘55 Chateau Blanc he went straight for the bottle of Jack Daniels, by no means an upscale drink.

Time passed and a few drinks later, Allen decided he should get ready for the Gala. He checked his watch once more.

8:15 pm

He took the elevator up to his penthouse on the 76th floor. Grasping the keys in his pocket, his buzzed clumsy demeanor managed to fumble the keys onto the floor. He carefully picked them up, like a claw trying to pick up a prize in an arcade machine. He slowly turned the key and entered his brightly lit suite.

Damn kid..., he thought to himself, How many times do I have to tell him turn off these Godforsaken lights if he’s not using them?

His neatly polished dress shoes heavily tapped on the fine wood floor, the sound trailing through the kitchen, down the living room steps and leading into the hallway. He noticed his sons door open, it was dark with only the flickering light of the television glimmering and a mash-up of explosions and gunfire emitting from the room.

“F*ck!”, his son shouted.

“Hey what did I tell you about cussing?”

“Sup dad”

“Don’t sup me. And don’t be cussing cause you hear me doing it.”

“Do I sense a double standard?”, his son retorted.

“Oh now you wanna get smart and be technical. Christ, I’ll never understand you. You’re too much me like... me. Anyways, how was school?”

“Same old same old, you know the usual.”

“Does the usual mean that damn C in math?”, he sarcastically questioned.

“Uhh it’s a C+ now. I don’t know why you’re worried about that grade, you were never good at math anyway.”, his son responded with an attitude.

“If I sucked at math do you think I’d own this business son? I told you if you don’t get that up to at least a B were not going to Universal Studios and I got Lightning passes, we’ll be first ones to ride everything.”, Allen said eagerly.

“Dad you wanna go as much as I do.”

“Shut up”

His son snickered.

“I need you to get ready for the Gala, I want you to meet some friends of mine.”

“I’m not going to the party, it’s only gonna be your friends there.”

“Nonsense, you’ll have fun.”

“I don’t think watching you or your friends get drunk is what I’d call ‘fun’.”

“It’ll be fun for me.”, he snickered.

“You’re stupid.”, his son laughed.

“Alright then, what’s the plan of attack? You just gonna coupe yourself up in your room?”, Allen asked.

“That’s the plan.”, his son replied.

“Alrighty, you know best sarge. I’ll order a pizza for you and have it delivered up. Don’t stay up too late we’re going out for brunch tomorrow. Perfect hangover food.”, he joked.

“Dad”

“Oops did I say that”, Allen laughed. “I love you, kiddo.”

“ I love you too dad.”

Allen closed the door behind him and proceeded to his room. He showered up, got suited in crispest, slickest tux and then headed on down to the veranda. He entered the elevator and upon entering his phone lit up with notifications from Twitter. He reviewed the tweets with callous indifference; Allen was never one to use social media partly due to his age and his apathy for social media platforms. Nevertheless he decided to fire off a few tweets of his own before descending down into the bowels of the Gala.

Allen Young
@Forever_Young
Holding a Green Gala here at the Young Tower. Excited to see
so many people attending the event and who truly care
about the environment. It’s high-time we get the discussion
rolling about climate change and it’s negative impact on the planet!
#SaveourHome #HelpMotherEarth #LeadingtheGreenCrusade

Allen Young
@Forever_Young
“Gather around people wherever you roam.
And admit that the waters around you have grown,
And soon you’ll be drenched to the bone. If your
time to you is worth savin’, then you better learn how to
swim or you’ll sink like a stone for the times
They are a changin’” - Bob Dylan

The elevator came to a slow stop as the silver metallic doors gently slid open. Allen hid his phone in the breast pocket of his dinner jacket and proceeded to head down the hallway to the event. He could hear the murmurs and mumbles of the crowd outside the dimly tinted double doors; before exiting through the threshold he paused for a minute, drawing a deep breath he thought “Showtime”. He flung both doors open in an erratic manner narrowly missing a patron.

“ Oops, my apologies ma’m.”

He calmly walked over to the bar and ordered a spiced rum on the rocks mixed with a dash of
Cola. He pulled out his phone from his breast pocket and quickly sent out a text to his organizer. 5 minutes later his party organizer gave a short spiel thanking everyone for attending the event and giving a brief introduction for Allen. Allen slammed his drink amidst the applause and proceeded to head towards to the stage. He smiled and waved, smiled and waved giving a thumbs up to few familiar faces and thanked his organizer for the intro.

“Thanks Tom. How’s everyone doing this evening? Hope your enjoying the party. First order of business I wanna thank everyone for attending this event, it’s an important issue that I hold very dearly. Protecting the environment should be amongst some of the top priorities our government should have. But it’s an issue that has been put on the back burner, an issue that doesn’t get the attention it deserves. Now I know an event like this won’t change things overnight however at least we can get the discussion going.”

“Bringing awareness to such a critical issue is the first step to making change. Now I’m sure many of you have been watching the news, keeping up with current events. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize what’s going on. These freak superstorms are becoming the norm, and they are costing us billions. I wanna make myself clear here and now; global warming is real! Climate change is real. It boggles me to think that some people deny what is happening to our planet. Our home is rapidly deteriorating and we are doing nothing about. It’s... it’s ridiculous. Plain and simple. Our leaders in DC have repeatedly ignored scientific reports, environmental analysts the whole nine yards, people who say that we are nearing the point of no return. We’re in the home stretch folks. I implore you to make a change, I mean let’s be real we have the money to make an impact.” He chuckles.

“Green energy. Now I’ve been thinking a lot about this term. Green energy. Green energy leads to green jobs and I know that’s in short supply nowadays. Green clean energy is the future; we have legislation in place such as the Emergency Stabilization Act and the ITC and performance based incentives, but I know these don’t go far enough. Solar, wind, hybrid vehicles we need to promote these alternative methods and make it the norm. So in an effort to promote this trend and hopefully get more of you fat cats on board I’ve decided to construct solar panels on half my properties and I’m committed to outfitting any new buildings with solar panels to wean my renters off the natural gas teat. Now this will be an expensive renovation but I know that it will pay dividends in the long run. I’m expecting this transition to fully come to fruition by 2022. This change is small but it creates a bigger picture that if everyone started doing this we will not only reduce our carbon footprint but also create jobs. Green jobs are underrated and I know folks in the rust belt can benefit off this new industry for sure.”

“Our environment is precious, it’s what created life and it’s what sustains us. Our leaders in Washington are not doing nearly enough to improve and protect our environment. Like i said before this issue has been put on the back burner, they are too busy bashing each other trying to out wit the next guy while we suffer from pollution and poverty. And so I challenge our legislators to join the Green Crusade and come up with some comprehensive Green legislation. It’s not too late to do our part and protect Mother Nature. It saddens me to think that no one has done so yet. I wanna make this a national agenda, this Crusade will take the nation by storm and it will start with us. That’s why I’m unveiling my new initiative the Green Crusade initiative. This initiative aims at bringing awareness to climate change and global warming while also promoting alternative energy methods and consumer products. Now normally this is usually the time I ask you to bring out your checkbooks and make a donation to my initiative but I want you all to go a step further and tweet about it, let’s get the discussion rolling.”

“I wanna take this moment to acknowledge a truly amazing innovation, Tesla. Folks Tesla is revolutionizing our auto industry creating an efficient automotive that not only looks beautiful but reduces our carbon footprint. They are a large employer here in the Bay Area and in the surrounding counties. If we can take their business model and implement it nationwide just imagine how many folks we could put back to work; not too mention the impact we’d have on our environment if we transition all of America to this great, wonderfully amazing car. We can tackle affordability another time.” He snickers. “Tesla has my support and a whole hearted endorsement and is a great instance of green jobs. If only I could get them to sponsor the Green Crusade Initiative.” Allen joked.

“Once again I wanna thank each and everyone of you for attending this event, it restores a little faith in humanity that we can come together as like-minded individuals and begin the process of saving our home. So... I feel like I’ve been blabbering on for awhile I’ll put this mic down and we’ll get the music going. Enjoy the rest of evening folks.”

Allen exited to a moderate applause, he handed the microphone back to his event organizer and shook his hand. He managed to spot a few old friends near the bar and decided to catch up with them.

The night was still young and full of booze.

“Oh wow, that must have been challenging,” replied Roberts, intrigued. “How’d you pull that one off?”

He makes it sound easy... thought Carter.

“Man, that’s a good idea. The town halls. Keeping in touch with your state’s issues. I should do that,” remarked Carter, jotting down the idea on a sticky note.

Kramer might be crazy, but that’s not half bad... he contemplated internally.

“Actually, I’m glad you came by when you did Senator, I was intending to contact you,” he continued with a new level of seriousness.

A smartly dressed chap sat at the edge of the bar, contemplating his latest triumph of the marketplace.

The latest trip to India had gone swimmingly: a major brokerage firm operating within the Calcutta Stock Exchange had agreed to purchase $4.3 million worth of Midas financial analysis software. Things for CALCOT were looking up- but he knew the company had to diversify its products, serving firms outside the financial industry which he knew so well.

Thus his attendance at this prestigious event hosted by this magnificent fellow.

It was quite a proper speech, jolly to hear and pleasing to the brain. He wanted to thank the man in person.

Jason had been organizing the gun protest outside Smith and Wesson for short while now and it was going fairly well. For the most part he had been making calls and emails but Jared O'Leary had requested to speak about it with him in person. Despite his dislike for Jared personally he was a major advocate for gun control and a visible figure, so Jason didn't want to piss him off or dismiss him.

He arrived outside the office in time for the meeting and addressed the receptionist, "Hello I have an appointment."

The well dressed and serious looking young man looked up. "Ah yes, Jason Samara. The Representative will see you now. Right this way." He guided Samara into Jared's personal office space. Shelves filled with books lined the walls with a number of portraits of various people including one of Jared and a few pictures of Chicago locations put up with a massive skyline photo on the wall directly behind him.

A handful of drinks in and a few shared laughs here and there, Allen was enjoying himself. Amidst the crowd of familiars and unfamiliars, a head stood out to him. At the edge of the densely packed bar was a distinct-looking man, a striking fellow who captured Allens gaze.

“ I’ll catch up with you guys later.” He said to his pals as he slammed his inelegant drink. A jack Daniels on the rocks.

He walked over to this man and attempted to break the ice.

“ Excuse me, you’re that business savvy fellow that brokered the Midas merger? I’ve read about you in the papers. Allen Young, CEO of the Young Group. It’s a pleasure.” He said as he extended his hand for a handshake.

He shook Young’s hand, then introduced himself in that Boston brouge: “You would be correct, oh Young one. The Midas merger was most beneficial for both organizations. I am the ever-humble President of California Commercial Technologies, Stanbridge Reginald Mallory -the 4th- at your service.”
