You're the Mayor of an American city, you shouldn't be so ignorant that you don't know the flag code, or witless enough that you didn't look it up before you pulled this stunt. This was a clear violation and a deliberate show of disrespect.

You don't even have to know the flag code to realize that taking down the American flag that had flown above the others to put it lower is deliberately dishonoring.

This political stunt by the Mayor of Trenton was one that was not properly reviewed or maybe not even given a second thought at all. Supporting a two-state solution is important but this was not the way to advocate. Pushing aside one's own patriotism is never the answer.

Joh Stansky’s blatant anti-semitism and disregard for the American Flag are deeply disturbing and worthy of intense scrutiny and shaming. Congressional Democrats should denounce Mayor Stansky’s worldview and make it clear to their constituents that they do not support his vile jew-hatred or his hatred for America, or welcome them in their party.

@ReverendMoore

Communist and Irreligious radicals always show their true colors sooner or later, despite pretending to represent American values. Joh Stansky willingly pulls down the American Flag and hoists up a terrorist banner instead! His ilk hate our beautiful country, and you need not look further than Trenton for concrete evidence. He should be removed from office.

May Stansky’s dangerous and borderline anti Semitic rhetoric is not gonna help anyone. It would give legitimacy to terrorist organizations like Hamas, alienate moderates in Israel, all in all making the peace process much harder. In turn making life harder for both Israelis and Palestinians. Please May Stansky think before you speak

@ColoradoGov

The Palestinian people are deserving of international recognition, and the government of Israel must right the wrongs it has perpetrated. A two-state solution must, can, and will be reached with the consent of both peoples. That being said, Mayor Stansky's actions are disrespectful, and he should have known better than to take the inflammatory action that he has. We as Americans must help foster a dialogue that leads to permanent peace, not further inflame division in our own country.

@ThePineTreeGov

The Democrats of New Jersey made a good decision when they rejected the Mayor of Trenton at the ballot box. A borderline communist and virulent anti-semite has no place in the Governor's Mansion, and after the shameful, disgusting display in Trenton, I hope the entire country can see why. Joh Stansky has done a good job of letting everyone see him for who he really is: a dangerous radical who cares nothing for the flag so many fought and died for.

"Comrade Stansky" (A COMMUNIST) is not a real Democrat, he is a PROGRESSIVE COMMUNIST like ELLEN WALTON and her gang. He should be ashamed, I know very nice people from Israel, and Tony Schlang is a nice person too, and he should not be spreading hate against people like them because they are Jewish. Palestine's flag is good too, but you must never respect the American Flag, that is just outrageous!

Anaheim Convention Center, Orange County (June 30th, 2017) (7:00 pm)

There was a large crowd gathered to hear the expected announcement. After the interview with Tom and Ben on KFI -one of the largest radio programs in Southern California, if not the country- Sydney had quietly started reaching out to old friends, and friends of old friends- putting out feelers to gauge the support for her own campaign.

Ambitions had grown over time, and with them so did the interest and offers of help. A mix of party officials and activists coalesced, forming the heart of an exploratory committee that conducting polling and other research to see if a statewide run was possible. All feedback said it would be feasible -depending on turnout, fundraising, and outreach.

The wheels had been put in motion: the California Federation of Republican Women and the Asian American Republican Council of California had sent out emails informing their members far in advance of the event, and a selection of theoretically friendly and far-reaching media had been invited, such as the Orange County Register and Tom and Ben from KFI.

The place was so packed that it became a standing-room only event, with the arena near its capacity of around 8,000 people. There were people from all over Orange County, along with many who came from suburbs in northern Los Angeles County like Palmdale, Lancaster, and Santa Clarita. Others still had come from farther away, from the other counties of Southern California: Riverside, San Bernadino, Ventura, and San Diego.

The audience was mostly elderly and middle-aged, and not too diverse: in the seas of faces, there were only two groups: whites and Asian-Americans. These were the same kind of voters who had helped get Proposition 212 on the ballot, and had volunteered on her campaigns. Some had walked precincts, made phone calls, and donated money to get her elected. Many held signs which read "CALIFORNIA CONSERVATIVE" and "RESTORE THE CALIFORNIA DREAM". All in all, this was the friendliest audience she had spoken to since leaving office nearly 20 years ago.

They had all come to hear one of the few prominent conservatives remaining in California, the woman who had stood up to all those who they despised: dangerous illegal immigrants, incompetent bureaucrats, spineless politicians, and godless radicals.

As she walked onto the stage, the crowd roared in excitement. Normally, Sydney would be nervous speaking to a crowd as large as this, but with a welcoming atmosphere in front of a friendly crowd, she spoke more forcefully than usual, in a clear, crisp voice.

She stepped up to the podium, quickly glancing at her notes before launching into her speech.

"I am very pleased to be with all of you- your presence here shows how much you care about the future of our great state. Many of you in the audience probably know me, but for those who do not: my name is Sydney Cao. I was a State Senator for the 34th District from 1994 to 1998, during which I served on the Little Hoover Commission. My start in public service came as an Orange Country Supervisor in the late 1970s, and most recently, I was a member of the Commission on Asian & Pacific Islander American Affairs under Swarzenaggar. I am speaking of my previous roles not for their own sake, but to show the experience I bring with me.”

She paused as she departed from her prepared speech and spoke of the cuff. “I have been preparing to run for Lieutenant Governor-”

The crowd refused to hear it. Shouts went out of one word, over and over again: “Governor!”

She allowed herself a brief smile- this was her moment, after all. “But I believe that those who want California to change for the better deserve the best possible person for our state’s highest office. That is why, as of this moment, I am entering the race for the governorship.”

There was loud applause, and cheers were heard throughout the arena for almost a full minute before there was silence.

Seizing the moment, she returned to her prepared remarks. She had prepared two versions of the speech: the initial one, in which she would introduce Cox to the crowd, let him make his speech, then announce a run for Lieutenant Governor, and the later one, in which she would announce a run for Governor herself. This was the latter of the two.

“I am a refugee from a family of refugees; fleeing South Vietnam, a country racked by civil unrest and besieged by a communist regime just across the border. I, along with my mother and brother, left for Hong Kong, while my father stayed on to continue in his military service. There, I saw a glimpse of what happens when a society keeps government within its natural limits- people are free to pursue their own ambitions, and build communities that they and their families can be proud of. But we were still not safe- communists had infiltrated the city, and there was a very real danger that we would be kidnapped and sent to the North. We were eventually allowed to settle in the United States, and made Santa Ana our home.

California was nothing like I had expected- it was so much better! I fell in love with its history, its culture, and above all its way of living. I'm sure those of you of a certain age can remember when higher education was a certain path to a better life, housing was both available and affordable, and the landscape was relatively untamed by the sprawl and congestion that was to come."

She paused for a moment, watching how her audience was reacting. Many in the crowd were nodding along in agreement. They too, could remember when California was truly the Golden State.

"The California Dream really seemed possible then- and I know because I have lived it: I was able to attend Santa Ana College before transferring to USC and making my way into public service. I know many of you have similar stories of how you made the California Dream a reality for yourselves and your families. But, unfortunately, what was true for us is not true for our children and grandchildren- the California of today is not the California of yesterday. There was an article released by CALmatters in February featuring a national study about this very issue -the likelihood of each generation being better off than the one that came before it. The results are striking: Californians born in 1980 have less than a 50% chance of earning more than their parents did. There's a lot that goes into that calculation, more than I can speak to here, but suffice to say that if we continue with business as usual, this bleak future is all but guaranteed. Our young people deserve the chance to improve their lives: remember that their struggles were once our struggles, too."

This part of the speech resonated with the audience: they knew so many who were stuck in the same dead-end jobs as their parents, could not find work despite going college, or struggled just to make ends meet.

"I want to speak plainly on some of the major challenges facing our state, the choices we face in dealing with those challenges, and what should guide us as we decide what our future should be.”

She took in a deep but not very audible breath as she went into the first policy section of the speech.

“Our first priority is balancing the budget. If the budget is well managed, our state can pay for necessary services and still have funds set aside in case of economic downturns or emergencies. Always, there is a call for ever more taxes to pay for ever more spending- but our tax burden is already far too high, at all income levels. I know that many will say Kansas went to the extreme in cutting taxes- but California has gone to the other extreme. The Legislative Analyst has repeatedly found that the state's revenue fluctuates wildly over time- in large part because of how much of it comes from the wealthy. Whenever the economy takes a turn for the worst, there is a budget shortfall of millions -sometimes even billions- of dollars, and our politicians turn to gimmicks and short-term measures out of desperation. When that inevitably fails, they turn to the rest of us to make up the difference. If we are going to balance the budget -and keep it balanced- we need comprehensive tax reform, and to take a hard look at which programs are working and which are not. Unless our fiscal house is put in order, we risk losing money for education, infrastructure, and the social safety net."

Mentioning spineless politicians? Check.
Supporting tax reform? Check.
Bringing up the social safety net? Check.

There was applause at this section of the speech, which she paused for.

"We have to get the economy back on track, but as we do so we must be mindful of who benefits- and how. We must build an inclusive economy -an economy for every part of our state- so that we can turn our California Dream into our California Reality. Yes, our state is one of the richest- yet it is also one of the poorest, having the highest poverty rate in the nation as recorded by the Census Bureau's Supplemental Poverty Measure. Factoring in cost of living, our state has become unaffordable to all but the well-to-do. As the Sacramento Bee noted in March, the working class is moving away, and those individuals and families who stay are barely getting by. The Mercury News reached a similar conclusion in April, except that it found that the middle class is also leaving. But there is hope! That very same story in the Bee made clear that for those Californians with at least an associate's degree, it is possible to find employment. The positions may not be suited for everyone, but steady jobs are available. We must reform, then expand, the California Earned Income Tax Credit and the Board of Governors Fee Waiver. By promoting work and education where they are needed most, people will have the experience and training to see themselves and their families through this recession. More importantly, when conditions improve, they will be able to make the most of what they have accomplished- whether or not they stay at their current job. With the right approach, we can make sure that everyone can realize their ambitions for a better life."

Mentioning the Cal EITC? Check.
Bringing up the Board of Governors Fee Waiver? Check.
Focusing on poverty? Check.

The applause started up just as before, and Sydney took another deep breath.

“Protecting our environment is our duty- both to ourselves and future generations. The well-being of our state, our country, and our planet depend on striking a balance between the man-made and the natural. As Californians, we take pride in our efforts to keep the air, land, and sea free from pollution, preserve vital habitat for native flora and fauna, and change the use of energy and water to build the sustainable society of tomorrow. We have set ambitious goals, and the most effective way to achieve these goals is not through heavy-handed mandates but through flexible standards that encourage innovation and recognize business as part of the solution rather than part of the problem. We must break with the thinking that government can replace what industry, academia, and non-profit organizations provide: advanced technology, timely data, and passionate people. We must move away from a static regulatory framework to a dynamic one. There is no clearer example of this than CEQA, which is being used to block more housing and renewable energy- both of which are needed to meet our environmental goals. The state must modernize this landmark piece of legislation: we need to stop frivolous and deceitful lawsuits, speed up a painfully slow review process, and have transparent requirements for all projects."

Yet again, there was applause, and another chance for Sydney to take a deep breath.

Mentioning the need to combat climate change? Check.
Talking about "business as part of the solution rather than part of the problem"? Check.

"Last but not least, we need to come together as a state. Ronald Reagan once said that a person could spend a lifetime seeing and getting to know California- and he was right. For as long as I have called this place home, I have been amazed by its diversity- in people, geography, and so much more. But I have also noticed a fundamental divide: between urban and rural, white and non-white, rich and poor- and most of all, between the elite and everyone else. Coming together starts with recognizing this divide for what it is- and knowing what to do about it. This divide is the creation of a self-serving political establishment that clings to power through half-truths and half-measures. The answer to this is clear: to bring an end to the divide, we must bring an end to what divides us."

This section of the speech was the most powerful- it brought many in the audience to their feet.

In the midst of all the applause, voices could be heard crying out: one yelled, "THAT'S RIGHT!" and another said, "GIVE 'EM HELL SYDNEY!" She took everything in: the response of the crowd, the slight hoarseness of her voice, and the distinct feeling that this path was the right one. This moment reminded her of why she had entered political life in the first place.

"It is no secret that the state has become ever more distant from those it is supposed to serve- figures of all parties recognize that. But this is not enough to bring meaningful change to Sacramento- we must be willing to take the fight to those who benefit from the status quo. Do not be misled by honeyed words: rhetoric ought to be compared to reality. We must draw a clear distinction between those who would continue with the politics of alienation and those who would revive the politics of unity. Only then can we ensure equal opportunity for all and secure our constitutional rights. Ramirez and his allies disregard the silent majority of Californians who want their government to reflect them: their communities, their needs and their values!"

This led to more applause, and after it died down, she went on.

“This upcoming election will be a battle of ideas- and I would like to make clear where my ideas come from. Limited government is not just a political mantra for me- it is a reflection of fundamental principles. I believe in the ability of people, through family, friends, faith, community, and their own God-given potential, to solve most of their problems without government. And I believe that when we really do need government, it should do its work effectively, without waste, fraud, and abuse. Principles such as the ones I have mentioned reflect values which all Californians share, in one way or another. All Californians, regardless of their background or political party, would agree that to truly have a high quality of life and a strong economy, we need a society that encourages perseverance, charity, decency, and hard work. These values are what I will hold to throughout the campaign, and, if I am privileged enough to be chosen as your Governor, will reflect my time in office. May God bless you and your loved ones, and may He continue to bless this great state of ours."

This time, there was no stopping the applause. She spent the rest of the evening greeting her supporters, while campaign staff circulated throughout, getting down names and contact information.

There was no turning back now. She had already promised that, in the event of a loss, she would make sure all of her staff found work in either the public or private sector. She had called in favors from almost everyone she had met during her political career -both high roller and lowly nobody- to build up the necessary organization and infrastructure in such a short amount of time.

Everyone was counting on her, whether she won or lost...... this was her one and only chance.

God willing, she would be at the State Capitol in 2 years, taking the oath of office to become a public servant once again.

That same evening...

@CaoforCalifornia

After taking some time for self-reflection, I have decided to enter the race for Governor. I am running so that all Californians can have a better life than those that came before them. Sacramento needs to be sent a message: the era of the elite is over, and the people are taking back their government!

Joh Stansky didn't just put up a Palestinian flag, he took the American flag down. He had it taken down from the roof, brought down and then put on the left of the Palestinian one. The American flag is always either above the others or to its right, and Stansky explicitly and deliberately brought it down to put it in a place of dishonor.

If you wanted camaraderie, then you would have flown it next to the Trenton flag. That's where you're the Mayor, that's where you get to make your gesture. Instead you deliberately pulled the American flag out of its flagpole to have it brought down. That's not camaraderie, that's disrespect.

Senator Zachary Fowler
@SenatorFowler

I am calling for the immediate resignation or removal of Mayor Stansky for his anti-semitic and anti American views.

"Those systems are not exactly the same and some are more unproven than solar." McGareth says.

"I think to avoid complexity or contradictions we could start with panels and then be prepared to expand the credit if a new market innovation develops something that is as proven and effective."

"Can we just use some sort of metric that rates the effectiveness of micro-generation? I am against designating specific industries for benefits in principle, I don't want the government picking winners and losers."

Mayor Stansky’s actions are greatly deplorable and a major embarrassment to the Democratic Party. The people of New Jersey should be thankful they voted for Tony Schlang over this political mishap. They deserve nothing of him.
