The problem is that the credits do not reach people with low incomes. They do not buy many new cars but used instead which are gasoline. A credit that only makes the middle class choose electric a little more will not work. Low end electric cars must be affordable on the bottom bracket. I have found that $30,000 is the best number. It is much cheaper than it sounds. For average buyers with the total number of electric cars sold it is less than one billion dollars a year. We want to see more of these cars sold and lower incomes buying so we want it to go up but it is small but effective in the tax budget." McGareth says.
