Samara Town Hall

After the microphone had been opened, an old man stood up. He was a nicely dressed, balding gentleman with the Southern, named Montgomery, classy appearance. He walked up with a cane and with the far-off, on-edge supervision of his children, who were middle-aged themselves. He tapped the mic with his finger and smiled when Samara turned to face him.

“G’afternoon, Senat-ur.” The man said, tipping his head politely. “Mah name is Charles Davidson, am a proud Bay Stater of ferty years, Georgian for thurty years befoh. I amma Republican of man’ decades, howevah am willin’ to switch mah vote for tha right candidate. Mah main quarrel with tha Democratic Party is naught that ya don’ support aborshion, guns fer all, or that ya do support gays, immigrashion, welfare. Wat I don’ like is how ya don’ show patience nor pay respect to those who do an’ don’. Ya have painted yaself as a New Democrat, sumone who’d redefine what a liberal is. Does that include endin’ this...reign o’ hatred an’ contempt put unto us Republicans by ya type of people? Because, if ya can promise me that mah children an’ their children an’ their children can walk tha streets, ‘spousin their views like ya ‘spouse yers without bein’ shunned, I might consider votin’ Democrat for tha first time in my life.”

He gave Samara a few moments to process his question, especially through his accent, and walked back to his seat with frail, quick steps so he could rest his old legs.

Walsh searched her eyes and let out a noise of agreement, straightening up a bit and nodding his head.

"Works for everyone involved, though, doesn't it?" he said, glancing down at the results again. "Gives certain women a certain advantage on the hill, with such ignorant men walking around." he said, the statement sounding like an established fact.

"Well ignorance is bliss" Stevenson answered. The joke was awkward rather than smooth and only partially made sense as she started feeling a little uncomfortable. She wasn't sure if she wanted to try to flirt anymore but felt pressured to continue. "Am I a certain kind of woman?" She asked in a slightly sultry tone.

Stevenson’s Office

Walsh looked her over overtly and shot her a smile.

“I certainly think so.”

Walsh kept eye contact for a few moments before slipping back over to her side of the desk, taking a leap of faith and placing one hand on the freshman member’s shoulder while the other grabbed a pen from the desk and wrote something down on a loose sheet of paper.

“I think we should talk some more Kristen, about your bill, maybe over something to take the edge off.” He hinted, his hand drifting lower down her back as his other hand finished writing, a slight of hand that would doubtlessly be noticed.

“New place in town, caters to people who’d prefer to keep things... out of unwanted ears.” He indicated, putting his number below the address. “How does 8 sound?”

"Well, aren't we all?" Cox said to Cao and seemed to continue walking away from Cao. "Let's see.." Cox said to himself.

Bob Stewart, having been warned in advance about Cox but unsure as to the exact circumstances which led his presence- or lack thereof, at the earlier speech, decided to investigate things for himself.

"Mayor Cox! I see you've decided to join us today. Sydney gave me the impression that you weren't coming."

Hart Senate Office Building, Washington D.C.

Image

After a brisk bid of cardio in the walk from his office to the elevators, and then the steps from departing the Capitol subway to the next elevator in the adjoining Hart building, Senator Amaras set down the two objects occupied in both hands to check the building map once again, and squint at the too-small handwriting on the slip of paper reminding him of the location. Gathering up the potted plant in one paw and the four-bottle pack in the other, he turned a pair of corners, looked around for a few moments to get his bearings, and then, reassured, stepped over to the door, set down the bottles, and gave a hard, echoing knock.

Thirty seconds later, he frowned and knocked a second time.

Another twenty later, he decided to try the door, which did not budge. A more forceful attempt at the handle shook the door slightly worryingly, but did not grant access.

Frowning, Amaras left the bottles on the ground to walk back to the map, then returned shortly after, confirming that this was, in fact, Roberts's office. He gave another knock, not expecting anything, then checked his watch and sighed, putting down the plant and leaning against the wall to wait.

"Congressman Samara thank you for taking my question. I appreciate the stand you have taken to not take money from Corporate PACs but dark money in our politics is a serious problem. Will you commit to not accepting any money or support from these dark money groups for your campaign?"

Ella listens carefully to what the older man says. "I guess I did not think about the Governor. I have been spending all my time in Washington in the Senate but I guess that as a Senator now I should talk to people like that. But I don't know if she would really listen to me since she doesn't have to. But maybe it's worth a try? I like the idea and I think I'll do that. Thank you!"

"Thank you for your question, its an important issue and why I co-sponsored legislation to shed light on these groups. I pledge today 100% transparency in donations from organizations, if private individuals donate small amounts and wish to remain anonymous thats fine by me. But I want everyone to know exactly who is helping fund my campaign."

"I will ask any PAC that supports me to disclose the source of any donations that are over $2,700 or I will not accept the donations. PACs aren't inherently evil, but they are currently used to hide where money comes from. Groups that fight for women's rights or labor rights use PACs to donate to candidates. If they want to support me I welcome that, but they need to disclose the details of where that money is coming from."

"Maybe I will, I've always wanted to travel the along the west coast and that'd be the perfect time to do it," Arlen spoke, finishing off his food. He lifted a napkin and began to dab the edges of his mouth.

"Bob Stewart! I see that the President of the Lincoln Club is here, as well! How's your day?" Cox said, shaking his hand. "I didn't have time to address my arrival here. Hope that you don't mind the suit, I need to show my own patriotism to this country seeing how we're nearing 4th of July. So how's the Lincoln Club? I heard that you been helping the Latino population and getting some charter schools made." Cox asked Bob.

“Hello, my day is going well, thank you for asking- and that’s a fine suit you’re wearing.... As to your last question... uh... we’ve been conducting outreach to Latino voters and supporting the expansion of charter schools, yes. The Lincoln Club is doing well. Getting ready for the midterms. I assume you want to address the members? The original event is winding down, but no one has left yet so you’d be speaking to a full house, as it were.”

Sydney watched in shock as Bob invited the Mayor to speak, but to him there was really no other way to resolve the impasse without bad press for the Club.

“Feel free to get one for yourself if you’d like.”

He walked up to the podium, getting everyone’s attention. “It seems there’s been a change in plans... Mayor Cox is in fact joining us today. Why don’t we give him a warm welcome?”

There was polite applause from the audience as Stewart stepped aside to allow Cox to speak.
