CNN Breaking News: Secretary of State Bell Hospitalized

(CNN)- At approximately 2153 local time, Secretary of State Abelard Bell was reportedly found unconscious in his temporary quarters at Al Hurriya Air Base, Iraq, a staging point for United States military forces in the War on ISIS. The following consists of all currently known information relating to the incident and all further developments.

Bell had been meeting with troops preparing for their departure from Iraq at the airbase on Saturday, continuing a multi-week visit to the Middle Eastern nation, in which the Secretary has assisted in the process of withdrawing U.S. combat forces, following the President's declaration of an end to major combat operations. The Secretary has played an active role in negotiations with Iraqi officials and military commanders during the period, following after multiple visits during the war, Bell having thus far spent a plurality of his time outside of the United States since assuming the position in Iraq.

The seventy-eight year-old reportedly displayed no signs of physical illness or infirmity during the daytime, though temperatures at the base exceeded one hundred degrees Fahrenheit outdoors, and he was unsheltered for substantial portions of the day. The Secretary messed with departing troops, and retired for the night, Colonel Patrick Talban, ranking officer at the base, reported to CNN. Talban similarly claimed that there was no indication of any medical difficulties on the part of the Secretary.

The Secretary was found unconscious by a State Department aide, who reported that he heard a 'thump' in the Secretary's room shortly after Bell had entered. The aide knocked at the door to inquire after his health, and after not receiving a response, unlocked the door to find the unconscious Secretary.

Secretary Bell was given immediate treatment by the base's medical team, and was subsequently transferred to Azadi General Hospital in the adjoining city of Kirkûk for further assessment and treatment. He is reported to be in serious condition. Further details will be provided as they become available.

Abelard Bell, born in 1938, was a life-long member of the United States Navy before an entry into politics in 2005, following his retirement. A former Chief of Naval Operations, Bell stepped down from a second term as the Governor of Virginia to accept the nomination of President Calvin Reed for Secretary of State, and was confirmed to the position by the Senate. He has been married to Debra King since 1963, and has thirteen children, nine of whom are members of the U.S. Armed Forces.
