Capitalism: A Love Letter

In a 2016 New York Times column, economic historian Deirdre McCloskey explains

Hey - hey, have you heard of inflation? $1 in 1970 is $6.32 today. That's right. What was 'starvation level' poverty in 1970 isn't even regular poverty today. This is counter-intuitive and just a bad idea.

Billions have pulled themselves out poverty because of concepts like property rights, free trade, globalization, the rule of law and entrepreneurship. When you free people up to trade, expand markets, let people start businesses and then protect that with laws you get progress, economic expansion and the end of poverty.

See above. Also, the IMF fudges poverty rates. It used to be $4.70 (not adjusted for inflation. mind you) and now it's $1.25. It isn't the end of poverty, it's modern imperialism. You forget all those that die, all those that suffer, in the name of capitalism.

Poverty WAS more or less the natural state of humanity. For most of recorded history people lived on the modern day equivalent of 2-3 dollars a day. We can see that places like Hong Kong and Singapore have thrived directly due to their small government and free markets. Switzerland has excellent federalism and financial protections. Estonia has made MASSIVE strides since leaving the soviet union due to their flat tax and free market reforms. Recall the classic comparisons between East and West Germany before the Wall fell, or now, between North and South Korea.

I'm not sure about Estonia, but the FSU as a whole collapsed after the Soviet Union collapsed.

Capitalism doesn't unleash innovation, creativity and discovery. It alienates people from society, isolating them in cages. Jimmy Reid makes an amazing point on this topic:

To tack onto this, have you ever heard of patent trolls? They steal patents, and sue whomever uses 'their' idea. Patents prevent people from using life-saving technology and from building on previous tech. Copyright is another problem: many fields, particularly the arts, are restricted by copyright. People become rich through being charismatic, through exploiting economic waves and through fooling other people. Sometimes they also lobby, changing the law itself in their favour. Does it require skill? Yes. Is it noble? No.

The author makes another mistake, as they talk about what percent of millionaires are X or Y, but if you look the other way..



Most offspring only move one quintile up or down. Generational wealth is a powerful influencer of your future wealth. Capitalism did not threaten the old social order: it stood behind it, until the profit motive moved. Do you think that all these companies would have rainbows on their logos back in the 70s, 80s or even 90s? Do you think that they would promote blacks and women back in the 20th century? Of course not.

That is the general policy. Publicly releasing emails is viewed similarly as in real life, as a controversial breach of trust. One Republican candidate drew criticism for doing so.
