Character Information Sheet

NS Nation Name: The Archipelago Territory
Character Name: Austin Miller
Character Gender: M
Character Age: 53 (b. June 5 1964)
Character Height: 6 feet 4 inches
Character Weight: 180
Character Position/Role/Job: Deputy Attorney General
Appearance:(Image)
Character State of Origin: FL
Character State of Residence: Washington, DC
Character Party Affiliation: Republican
Main Strengths: Responsible, dedicated/determined, experienced, has argued Supreme Court cases, great debater.
Main Weaknesses: Stubborn, temper, partisan, not very good at public speaking (he is okay at it).
Biography:
Early Life-
Austin Miller was born in Washington D.C. in 1964, and he was interested in politics from a young age as a result. His grandparents immigrated to the U.S. and worked low-paying jobs, but his dad graduated from NYU and became a corporate lawyer, and Miller followed his footsteps by graduating Harvard Law School in 1989. He got married to his wife Sofia in 1996.
Legal Career-
In 1990, a year after working for his dad, Miller became a General Attorney at the FBI and held the position for two years, before he became bored. When asked why he quit the FBI in a town hall style campaign rally, he said “they wanted me to provide counsel and maintain the legality of federal investigations. When I became a lawyer, I wanted to fight battles in a courtroom, not advise an agency.” Shortly after, with a recommendation from the Deputy Director of the FBI, Miller was hired by the Solicitor General to serve as a lawyer in the Office of the Solicitor General in December 1992. He helped prepare arguments for the Solicitor General in several Supreme Court cases in 1993, before the Solicitor General resigned.
Political Career-
When the Solicitor General retired in 1993, he recommended to the Attorney General that Miller take his place. After being asked to take the job by the President, Miller accepted. While many people in the DOJ were confused as to how he got the job, it was most likely because he wrote several key legal arguments for crucial Supreme Court cases.

However, while Miller won several Supreme Court cases for the U.S. government. In the 2001 case Shrub v. Blood, he wrote an amicus curiae brief which stated that Shrub, the Republican President, should win the case because it violated the 14th amendment. This led to a large amount of backlash because the media accused him of political bias, since he was a known conservative. He resigned before Shrub took office.

In 2002, he was elected as the Florida Attorney General, mainly because of an endorsement from Governor Shrub as the Florida Attorney General, and used his powers to root out corruption and expose lobbyists who bribed state politicians. His firing in 2003 raised many red flags, with local media outlets alleging that corruption may have been afoot in Tallahassee.

Miller won a State Senate Republican primary in 2004 for the 1st district of Florida, and won the campaign with almost no effort, because due to gerrymandering, he was the only candidate on the ballot. He did not run again in 2008, and stayed out of politics until 2015 when he was appointed Solicitor General by President Winston. While many journalists were confused as to why Winston would appoint a Republican, Winston stated that Miller was “a centrist and more of a libertarian than a Republican.” When Gene Eric took the Presidency in late 2016, Miller resigned.
Serving as the Deputy A.G.-
After President Reed took office, he appointed a Democrat as the Attorney General, even though the party was falling apart due to the recent formation of the Progressive Party. However, since the courts were becoming increasingly partisan, President Reed appointed Miller as a the Deputy Attorney General shortly after taking office in order to “have a moderating effect on the DOJ.” Although he is a constitutional originalist, he gets along well with the Attorney General, and doesn’t bring politics into most conversations. Miller oversees the FBI, the Office of the Solicitor General, and the U.S. Attorney’s office.

I have read and accept the rules of the roleplay: The Archipelago Territory

This is looking way better!

However, it is a bit strange that he was nominated by two Democratic Presidents to be their Solicitor General.

Maybe we can have our two characters have a meeting or something, though I don't know what it would be about - maybe just old friends?

I have read and accept the rules of the roleplay: The Archipelago Territory

This is looking way better!

However, it is a bit strange that he was nominated by two Democratic Presidents to be their Solicitor General.

For his first term:
It’s possible. Although the position of the Solicitor General isn’t in the civil service system, the position isn’t really partisan either. While the majority of office-holders have been partisan, it seems that some people such as Elana Kagan have held the office, although have not disclosed their party. In fact, Obama liked Kagan (who was nonpartisan) so much he nominated her to the Supreme Court. It wasn’t really common knowedge at the time what Miller’s party was, and it’s possible he was very good at arguing during Supreme Court proceedings. It has happened that one person in the office of the principal deputy Solicitor General once prepared a strong legal argument and argued it before the court, which led to an 8-1 decision. He was awarded the highest honor the department can give soon after. For the sake of this argument let’s say that since I wrote that Miller “wrote several key arguments” he was a good pick for the office. Tons of oral arguments/questioning periods go on in the span of four months.
For his second term:
I already explained why Winston nominated him. He was in the second-to last year of his term, and Miller was a moderate/centrist, not a hardcore conservative. He’s actually a libertarian, but would rather run with the Republican Party than the Democrats, due to his economic conservatism, which he values more than his progressive social values.

Thanks for the help though!

All righty, lets run it through

Solicitor General at 29 is kinda crazy. He's been in the office for less than a year, that's still practically intern level, not really the kind of thing that gets him immediately bumped up to one of the top legal positions in the country some months in

Florida AG is an elected office, he can't get fired from it. His career is also going straight down, US SG to state AG to state Sen is basically a backwards career path

Getting picked by Winston seems really random, but if one of his weaknesses is that he's partisan, it makes even less sense. The Shrub/Blood thing would probably be enough already, but an hardcore partisan doesn't really jive with the reasons there

Alright, I’ll do my research and start from scratch.

Sorry for being offline for a while. What's happened?

By the way, will any NY politicians plan on visiting Manhattan on Patriot Day (September 11)? I'm planning on having Torenov make a speech at the Memorial that day and I'm curious if anyone wants to attend.
