That was, however, until 1997, in which his father was found as a backer of several organised crime syndicates. He was arrested for conspiracy, and Carlos had soon found his father's entire company at his lap (after some significant payments to victims of the syndicates, of course), and so he began his operations. He streamlined the business and expanded it as fast as possible, pursuing a policy of swift growth. However, in 2002, he decided to leave his company to his son, ready to go into politics. He was first offered a job as a TV pundit, making frequent appearances as a 'centrist, common-sense businessman' on many news programmes. This was the beginning of his political career. In 2007, he was elected Mayor of Palm Beach. He gave large subsides for businesses to come in, increasing the economic growth of the city significantly, albeit at the cost of a major deficit, which led to a nosedive in his ratings unprecedented in the history of the city..well, until later anyway. He had also reduced alcoholism by working with local shops to further conceal alcohol. What began the fall of what was to be a lifelong career of serving Palm Beach was the Panama Papers: he was exposed as being accessory to tax evasion along with several other white-collar crimes such as money laundering. He fought it off in court, albeit many still believed he should've lost. His approval rating fell from the high 60s to the mid-20s within a heartbeat. Despite having the (albeit narrow) possibility of a 3rd term, he opted to resign and go for the House in 2016. He lost to the incumbent, as most people do when fighting an incumbent, and as such, he decided to go for the Senate election instead.
